Looking at her empty paper, Marties thought, “A picture of oneself is the hardest.” But to her surprise, everyone else seemed to be working already. 1 rose in Marties’ heart. She was afraid that she could not make it at all.
“Class, you may show some of your favourite things. I can’t wait to see what you are going to share.” Ms. Carter said cheerfully. She walked around, amazed at students’ works. Marties felt a knot in her stomach as Ms. Carter stopped and 2 her shoulder. All that Ms. Carter could see was her empty piece of paper.
“I…I just can’t do it. It’s just too hard.” Marties felt frustrated.
“It’s OK, Marties. A picture of oneself is difficult for a lot of people,” Ms. Carter said. “Tell me, Marties, what 3 so hard for you?”
“I can’t think of one thing that symbolizes me. I don’t even have a favourite food!” Marties explained. “When I’m sick, my favourite food is chicken soup. At picnics, mangoes. And on my birthday, apple pie. It is impossible for me to pick one favourite.”
“There’s 4 wrong with not having one favourite thing, Marties,” said Ms. Carter, “The fact that you have different ‘favourites’ is really amazing,” Ms. Carter went on. “What if you use this project to share many parts of yourself — what you’re interested in, how you feel, even what foods you like to eat at different times?”
5 by Ms. Carter’s words, Marties gathered up different colored pencils, picking a bright orange that looked like a mango. Then, she decided upon a brown one to make a bowl of warm chicken soup… Finally, she filled her paper with different sized and colored circles to be her faces.

Passage 3
A near miss
Justin had been counting down the days until he was allowed to learn to drive. In the UK, teenagers may apply for a provisional licence (临时驾照) when they are fifteen and nine months old, so on the morning he reached that age, Justin filled in the online form before breakfast. On his way to school, he was already imagining himself behind the wheel.
Justin’s parents had mixed feelings. They were tired of driving him to football training and parties, but the thought of their sometimes careless son driving a real car made them nervous.
“I’m not teaching him to drive,” Justin’s mum, Tina, said firmly to her husband, Greg. “Do you remember how he crashed his bicycle into the neighbour’s gate last month? He isn’t very sensible.” Greg did not agree. “He needs to learn to be more careful and responsible,” he replied. “If we never let him try, he’ll never grow up. Don’t worry, I’ll teach him. Everything will be fine.”
Justin’s first driving lesson was on Saturday. All week, he told his friends that it would be easy. “I’ve read the Highway Code, and I’ve watched Mum and Dad drive for years,” he said confidently. “How hard can it be?”
At last Saturday arrived. Justin hurried to the car, excitement rushing through him. Tina stood at the front door and watched anxiously as he started the engine, checked the mirrors and slowly moved away from the house. “Well, that’s a good start,” she thought.
However, the real test came at the end of the street. Justin wanted to turn right, so he simply turned the steering wheel and drove out into the road. He did not slow down and he did not notice the car coming towards him. The other driver braked sharply and stopped just in time. Justin’s face turned pale as he realized how close he had been to causing an accident.
“Out you get,” Greg said in a tight voice. “Driving is not a game, Justin. Until you learn to respect the rules and other people on the road, you are not ready to drive.”
1.Why had Justin been counting down the days before his birthday?
2.Why did Justin’s mother mention his bicycle accident?
3.What was Greg’s opinion about Justin learning to drive?
4.What shows that Justin was overconfident before his first lesson?
5.What does the title “A Near Miss” mean in this story?
6.What important lesson do you think Justin learnt from this experience? Give one reason.
【答案】1.Because he was eager to learn to drive. 2.To show Justin was careless. 3.He thought Justin needed to learn to be careful and responsible. 4.He said driving would be easy because he had read the Highway Code and watched his parents drive. 5.It means Justin nearly caused an accident while driving. 6.He learnt to respect the rules and other road users. / He learnt that driving requires serious attention and responsibility.
【导语】本文讲述了贾斯汀迫不及待地学开车,但因过于自信和粗心在第一次驾驶课上差点引发事故,从而认识到驾驶需要尊重规则和他人安全的故事。
1.根据第一段“Justin had been counting down the days until he was allowed to learn to drive.”可知,他倒计时是因为渴望学开车。故填Because he was eager to learn to drive.

3.根据第三段父亲的话“He needs to learn to be more careful and responsible... If we never let him try, he’ll never grow up.”可知,父亲认为贾斯汀需要通过学开车来学会谨慎和负责。故填He thought Justin needed to learn to be careful and responsible.
4.根据第四段贾斯汀对朋友说的话“I’ve read the Highway Code, and I’ve watched Mum and Dad drive for years... How hard can it be?”可知,他过度自信地认为开车很简单。故填He said driving would be easy because he had read the Highway Code and watched his parents drive.
5.根据第六段描述贾斯汀转弯时未减速、未注意来车,对方急刹才避免事故,以及“how close he had been to causing an accident”可知,标题“A Near Miss”意为“险些发生的事故”。故填It means Justin nearly caused an accident while driving.
6.本题为开放性问题,可从文中父亲最后的教导“Driving is not a game... Until you learn to respect the rules and other people on the road...”推导出贾斯汀学到的教训。故填He learnt to respect the rules and other road users. / He learnt that driving requires serious attention and responsibility.

Passage 1
Two years ago, I went on holiday to Rome with my family. It was a four-hour train journey from our home, and we all helped to plan the trip. We were looking forward to seeing the famous sights. Everything went really well and we had a great time visiting the amazing tourist attractions. I was in charge of taking all the photos with my brand new phone, which had an excellent camera. We stayed in Rome for two weeks, and it was really amazing.
On the train journey back home, I decided to open my backpack, but I couldn’t find it. All my memories of Rome were in that backpack. I was very upset because I’d packed my phone in that backpack, along with my travel diary. I knew I would never see my new phone again. Weeks passed, and then months. At first, I contacted the train company every week, but after some time, it was clear that my backpack was never going to be found. After a while, I forgot all about it.

Passage 3
根据短文内容回答下列问题。
The day had been good, but school was tiring. I was lying on my sofa, mindlessly scrolling (滚屏) through social media, obsessed (痴迷) with someone else’s fancy life. Without even knowing it, I was comparing myself to others.
In fact, I’m not alone! Comparing is something we struggle with every day. Studies show that anytime a thought comes to our minds, there’s a 1-in-10 chance that we’re comparing ourselves to others. Social comparison theory states that people would judge their own social and personal worth by comparing themselves to others around them.
Comparison had been the thief of my joy for long until one day I realized that it is pointless (无意义的) to compare ourselves with others-we are comparing our weaknesses to someone’s strengths. I still remember several moments when I thought the worst of myself because I thought the best of someone else. For example, every time I saw Kayla performing well at her schoolwork, the first thing that popped into my mind was a wish that I could be as smart as her. I kept asking myself, “Why couldn’t I just be like her?” I practically praised Kayla while hating myself at the same time.
I decided to change. I started to focus on improving myself instead of comparing with others. I took up reading one book every month. I started new hobbies. This helped me to discover a new self.
I learned to appreciate (欣赏) what I had. Every day, I wrote down things I was happy about and chose to be around people who made me feel good. This made me value my life and see how special it is.
And I changed how I used social media. Instead of aimlessly scrolling, I customized (定制) my social media feeds (信息流) to include more educational and inspirational information. I felt happier and was less likely to compare myself to others.
In our lives, it’s important to ask ourselves a key question: are we tending (照料) to our own garden or are we only visitors, admiring the beautiful gardens of others while failing to care for our own? Try not to get lost in comparing yourself to others since everyone is different. Discover your gifts and let them shine!
1.Was the writer obsessed with others’ fancy life on social media?
2.How do people judge their social and personal worth according to social comparison theory?
3.Why does the writer think it is pointless to compare ourselves to others?
4.How many changes has the writer made?
5.What are the examples of focusing on improving yourself?
6.What do you think of the ways the writer took to avoid pointless comparison? Why? (Please give two reasons)
【答案】1.Yes. 2.By comparing themselves to others around them. 3.Because we often compare our weaknesses to someone else’s strengths. 4.The writer has made three changes. 5.The writer took up reading one book every month and started new hobbies to discover a new self. 6.I think the writer’s view is quite correct. Because comparing yourself to others makes you feel bad. Besides, it can mask your own talent.
【导语】本文主要讲述了作者通过自身经历,意识到与他人比较会带来无意义的痛苦,并分享了如何通过专注于自我提升、感恩和调整社交媒体使用习惯来克服这种心理,最终实现个人成长的过程。
1.根据“I was lying on my sofa, mindlessly scrolling (滚屏) through social media, obsessed (痴迷) with someone else’s fancy life.”可知,作者躺在沙发上,无意识地浏览社交媒体,痴迷于别人的美好生活。故填Yes.

3.根据“it is pointless (无意义的) to compare ourselves with others-we are comparing our weaknesses to someone’s strengths.”可知,自己和别人比较是没有意义的因为我们是在把自己的弱点和别人的长处进行比较。故填Because we often compare our weaknesses to someone else’s strengths.
4.根据“I started to focus on improving myself instead of comparing with others.”“I learned to appreciate (欣赏) what I had.”及“And I changed how I used social media.”可知,作者做出了三点改变。故填The writer has made three changes.

Passage 1
It happens to all of us. It is the end of the semester and your teacher gives you your report card. You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what do you do now?
A disappointing report card is something that almost all students will experience at least once in their lives. Grades are how most schools evaluate students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next.
The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades were calculated. Was the problem a bad test, lack of participation in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behaviour! However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some extra help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Then, make a detailed plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That’s a good way to make your parents less angry.
While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that not every report card will be perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, and you should too!
1.What is the problem with the grades?
A.Most schools evaluate students by using grades.
B.We don’t always get good grades we want.
C.Grades are sometimes incorrect.
D.It’s important to get good grades.

Passage 2
Stagehand Superstar
Every kid wanted to play the Big Bad Wolf, but not Stella. Sure, the Wolf got to yell, “I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in!” But Stella knew who really brought the house down—the stagehand!
Stella was wearing all black. She quickly, but quietly, put the houses and trees onto the dark stage. She stayed behind the cardboard tree between the straw house and the stick house. The stage lights 1 .
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in!” Brad, the wolf, shouted. He pretended to knock on the straw house. 2 the house was really just painted cloth, Stella knocked loudly on the floor.
After Brad’s biggest puff, Stella made the cardboard tree fall down, followed by the straw house. Audience cheered. The wolf—but really Stella—easily made the stick house fall down, too.
But no amount of huffing and puffing would make that brick house 3 . “I’ll sneak down the chimney and get those piggies!” Brad growled in a stage whisper loud enough for the whole audience to hear. Brad climbed up a ladder behind the set. From the front, it looked like he was on the chimney.
Paige, the pig, cried out, “Let’s build a fire to scare away that mean old wolf!” Real fire would be way too dangerous. That’s 4 they needed Stella. Paige knelt beside the fireplace. Stella turned on a red light and a fan. Glowing tissue paper strips rose up from the cardboard logs. Someone in the audience gasped (倒吸气). The fake fire looked very real indeed.
“My tail!” Brad howled. He climbed down the ladder and ran away. The pigs high-fived. The victorious music played. The actors lined up and bowed. The crowd burst into applause and jumped to their feet.
Stella stayed 5 , but she knew the applause was for her, too. Stella had played her part so perfectly that the audience 6 knew she was there. They just enjoyed the magic of the theater. But Stella, the stagehand, was the one making that magic.

Passage 3
Life is full of the unknown. Some people may bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have realized. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of twenty. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are sure to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.” At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again as long as I insisted on (坚持) practicing walking. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again. Over the years, I had various levels of business success. But the real turning point happened on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we met a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed.
Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979, my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

Passage 3

Passage 1 Two years ago, I went on holiday to Rome with my family.
Last month, I took the train to Florence on a school trip. Unbelievably, my backpack went missing again. I searched and searched, but it was nowhere to be seen. After Rome, I always kept my phone and other important items in my pockets.
Two weeks after the Florence trip, I received a phone call from the train company. They told me they had my backpack, and they would send it to the station in my city. I assumed it was my backpack from the school trip. But, this time, there were no precious memories inside. Someone from the train company had found the backpack from Rome in a dusty old cupboard. Passage 2
In one’s life, one spends the most time being with oneself. But one has the least understanding of oneself. When you are successful, you may be very proud. When you 1 , you may lose heart. If you don’t get a thorough understanding of yourself, you may miss many chances in life.
To get a thorough understanding of yourself is to know well about yourself. You may realize your strong points and weak ones. You may hope for a wonderful future, but be sure not to 2 too much because you may not realize all of your dreams. You may be confident enough to meet challenges, but first you should know 3 to do.
To get a thorough understanding of yourself needs self-appreciation (自我欣赏). Maybe you think you are a tall tree or just small grass, but you can always have your own way of being there. 4 you get full confidence in yourself, you are sure to face any trouble.
To get a thorough understanding of yourself also means to 5 yourself. When you are angry, find a quiet place so that you won’t be hurt. When you are sad, tell your friends about it to change the mood (心情) into a good one. When you are tired, get a good sleep. If you don’t know when and how you should look after yourself, you won’t be able to stay away from 6 .
No one can tell what will happen in the future. Get a thorough understanding of yourself, and you will get a full control of yourself and find your life full of color.

Passage 1 It happens to all of us.
