Passage 3
Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
Is it OK to regift present?
People in the UK spend a total of £700 million each year on Christmas presents that aren’t wanted.
Regifting means giving an unwanted present to someone else at a later date.Regifting could also mean giving the present to charity.
No-receive presents with gratitude. Giving gifts is a tradition that brings families and friends together. The right response to a present is to be thankful, whether you want the thing or not. To pass a present on is ungrateful and rude. What happens in six months if the giver asks to see the thing they considerately (4S) chose and gave you, or asks if you’re enjoying it? You might hurt the giver’s feelings. Besides, a thing is only a waste if a person doesn’t use it. So be imaginative, work out how to enjoy the gift and be thankful.
Giving presents is a thoughtful act of generosity (慷慨) that should be met with thanks — regifting could be seen as rude and ungrateful by the giver.
Regifting may mean the person receiving the present has to lie later on and pretend that they still have the present and are using it.
Instead of regifting, be imaginative and think about how to make use of the present and enjoy it.
Yes — an unwanted thing becomes treasure. When it comes to presents, some say it’s the thought that counts. Others think it’s the thing, and when the thing is unwanted, the present is just a waste. There’s a lot of waste in the world, and it’s damaging the environment. Instead of adding to the problem, give the gift to someone who will love it. Books and toys can be given to a friend on their birthday or to a children’s charity, and clothes to a homeless shelter. In any case, it is often much better to give than to receive.
Regifting is an excellent way to make use of something that would otherwise
(否则) be a waste. There is far too much
waste and it’s terrible for the environment.
You can give the gift to a friend on a birthday, or to charitable (善) cause, and make someone else happy with the thing you didn’t want.
Regifting turns disappointment into joy. One person’s waste is another’s ________.
1.How much money do people in the UK spend each year on Christmas presents they are unwanted?
2.It isn’t OK to regift because people receive presents with gratitude, is it?
3.What does the underlined sentence “It is the thought that counts.” mean?
4.According to the passage, which is much better, giving or receiving a gift?
5.After reading the passage, try to complete the last sentence with the proper word: One person’s waste is another’s .
6.Are you for or against regifting present? Give a reason which is Not mentioned in the passage?

Mr Chen makes dough toys of different sizes. Only a small piece of dough and some simple tools are required to make a dough toy. Mr Chen uses his hands to turn the dough into different characters, for example the Monkey King. Dough of different colours is used to make the toys more interesting.

Shadow puppets are made of hard leather. The leather is cut out in the shape of a person, an animal or an object. Each puppet is painted In bright colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have movable arms and legs.
A Chinese knot is usually made of a thin rope. It can be in the shape of a an animal, a flower or a Chinese character with a special meaning. Red ropes are usually used because red is a lucky colour for Chinese people.

Passage 3
Mark Twain is one of the most quoted authors ever. There are hundreds of his quotations(语录) in books on posters and on websites. Here is an example:
“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”---Mark Twain.
Quotations like this one give us guidance. It reminds us that telling a lie is much more difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests that you shouldn’t lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another example.
“Always obey your parents when they are present.”---Mark Twain
Again, the quotation give good advice---to always obey your parents, but the humourous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents when they are there with you ---because they can see what you are doing.
Albert Einstein’s quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are inspirational(鼓舞人心的.). This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be. Here is an example:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”---Albert Einstein
This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the quotation serious. This quotation give us hope that that we can learn from any mistake we made yesterday. It reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and ask the right questions to help us achieve our best.
1.Where are Mark Twain’s quotations always used?
2.Telling a lie is easier than telling the truth, isn’t it?
3.According to Mark Twain, why should we always obey our parents when they are present?
4.What does “Learn from yesterday.” in Albert Einstein’s quotation really mean?
5.What’s the purpose of not to stop questioning?
6.Among the three quotations above, which one impresses(印象)you most? Why?

Passage 3
Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress. This feeling is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are several stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually known as the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”. However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and prefect certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.
1.The writer doesn’t think “culture shock” is difficult to overcome, does he?
2.What problems may people face when they experience “culture shock”?
3.How many stages of “culture shock” are mentioned in the article?
4.Why do people feel excited when they first move to a foreign country?
5.What is the “home” stage?
6.Describe two ways to deal with “cultural shock”.
Passage 4
The Beauty of Chinese Traditional Handicrafts
Chinese traditional handicrafts are precious treasures of Chinese culture, carrying thousands of years of history and wisdom. Among them, blue and white porcelain (青花瓷) is one of the most famous. It first appeared during the Tang Dynasty and became popular in the Yuan Dynasty. Today, it is still loved by people all over the world.
Blue and white porcelain
Making blue and white porcelain is a long and complex process. First, craftsmen need to choose high-quality clay (黏土) and make it into a rough shape called a “blank”. Then, they draw beautiful patterns on the blank with special blue pigment (颜料). These patterns usually include flowers, birds, dragons, and phoenixes—each with a special meaning. ____2____, lotus flowers stand for purity, while dragons symbolize power and good luck. After drawing, the blank is covered with a layer of transparent glaze (釉料) and fired (烧制) in a kiln (窑) at a high temperature. Only after several careful steps can a perfect blue and white porcelain piece be made.
Paper-cutting
Besides blue and white porcelain, there are many other wonderful traditional handicrafts in China. Paper-cutting is a simple but creative one. People use scissors to cut paper into different shapes, such as red lanterns and fish, for festivals like the Spring Festival. Embroidery (刺绣) is another art form. Craftsmen sew colorful threads on cloth to make beautiful pictures. Some embroidery works are so detailed that they look like real paintings.
____4____
However, many traditional handicrafts are facing the risk of disappearing. Young people are less interested in learning these skills because the learning process is long and hard, and it’s not easy to make money from them. Luckily, more and more people have realized the importance of protecting these crafts. Some old craftsmen are teaching young people for free, and schools are adding handicraft courses to help students learn about traditional culture.

Kirsten: Talking about Finns and Finland, what do you guys think about living here 1 ?
Edwina: I must tell you guys that I was quite pleasantly surprised at the weather when I first arrived here in the middle of winter. The temperature was minus 15. I thought I was going to die! But I don’t freeze 2 in Finland, because all the buildings are so well heated. I freeze more in Scotland than I do here.
Vishal: True. And the summertime is lovely, though. Another thing I really like about living in Finland is that it’s really 3 , at least compared to Mumbai! One day, when I was walking home, I dropped my wallet. When I noticed this, I thought it would be stolen for sure. But I found that someone had put my wallet on top of a bench so that I would find it more easily. The most surprising thing was that nothing had been taken from it!
Kirsten: That’s pretty 4 . It always makes me smile to see all the lost things.
Edwina: People here 5 a lot. For example, almost no one crosses the road when the light is red, even if there are no cars coming.
Kirsten: You’re right! I remember I once crossed the road when the light was red. People waiting on the other side looked at me in a very annoyed way. That made me decide never to do it again!
Vishal: That’s funny! In India, people don’t do that!
Joseph: Well, another thing that can be funny is Finnish food. One day, soon after getting to Finland, I felt like having something sweet. I went into the corner shop and I saw that there were freshly baked doughnuts on the bread counter. “Excellent!” I thought, and I chose a big doughnut to sink my teeth into. But imagine my horror when I discovered that it was filled with meat!
Edwina: Oh yes. I think the meat filling is actually quite nice but not when you are 6 jam!
