There must be few occasions when it would be really rude to refuse an invitation to hit someone you’ve just met with your fist! But I’m in one of those right now. I’m in a rehearsal room in a theatre with a group of actors, facing up to stage fighting director Kate Waters. She wants me to hit her with my fist. But fear not, this is all strictly pretend! Kate, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is giving a lesson on how actors fight each other without getting hurt.
Already a passionate martial arts expert from childhood, Kate did drama at university, and one of her courses introduced her to stage fighting. When she made inquiries about the possibility of teaching it as a career, she was told about the register of stage fight directors and the qualifications she’d need to be accepted into it. It was no small order: as well as a certificate in advanced stage fighting, she would need a black belt in karate (空手道) and skill in fencing, a sport she’d never tried before. But she rose to the challenge and finally successfully became one of only two women on the official register.
Of course, a stage fight is just smoke and mirrors. In our lesson, Kate shows me how an actor will stand with his or her back to the audience ahead of a planned slap (拍). When the slap comes it makes contact not with the skin but with the air: the actor hits his chest or leg to make the sound of the slap.
In the rehearsal room, I can’t resist asking Kate how she thinks she would do in a real fight. Would she give her attacker a hard time? She laughs, “Oh, I’d be awful,” she says. “I only know how to pretend.” I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble.
41. Why does Kate ask the author to hit her?
A. To show actors stage fighting skills. B. To teach actors to defend themselves.
C. To help actors rehearse an action scene. D. To attract actors’ interest in martial arts.
42. What was a challenge Kate faced in becoming a stage fight director?
A. She could not find a female teacher. B. She had no prior experience in drama.
C. She had to master an unfamiliar sport. D. She had trouble obtaining a certificate.
43. What do the underlined words “smoke and mirrors” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A difficult technique. B. A dangerous situation.
C. A well-planned lesson. D. A misleading performance.
44. What does the author imply about Kate’s real fighting ability?
A. She relies a lot on tricks. B. She may lack confidence in herself.
C. She might be better than she admits. D. She excels more at performing than fighting.
45. What does the text focus on?
A. How stage fighting can be dangerous if not done properly.
B. The life and career of a successful female stage fight director.
C. A comparison between real fighting and stage fighting.
D. The history of martial arts in the theatre industry.

Azechhi Foods, a popcorn (爆米花) maker and specialty food wholesaler in Japan’s Kochi City, has become famous for using and selling popcorn not just as a snack but as a cushioning (缓冲) material.
The company’s manager, Shihoko Wada, had been struggling to promote popcorn on Azechhi Foods’ online store where people mainly bought specialty food. She was inspired after attending a meeting in which an attendee used a packet of popcorn as a cushion. While it caused laughter from the audience, for Wada it was an eye-opener. Not only could the popcorn be used as a snack, but it was also an incredible opportunity to attract attention.
Soon Azechhi Foods launched a cushioning material called “Taberareru Kanshouzai”, using popcorn to fill packaging space. “Although popcorn is more expensive than conventional-cushioning materials like cardboard, it comes with a few definite advantages: Once it’s finished serving its purpose, it can be eaten, so it doesn’t become useless garbage. Above all, I thought that the customers who received it would be happy with the surprise. They would get a sense of value, and it would also help improve the company’s image,” Wada said.
Wada’s idea was to package the popcorn in a bag that had “not edible (可食用的)” printed on it, only with the “not” crossed out, and then use the bags as a cushioning material in the packages they sent all over the country. People loved the idea and before long, photos of the bags started going viral on Japanese social media.
Azechhi Foods soon started receiving orders from all sorts of businesses, like a company that sells used video games, a greengrocer, a wine seller, etc. As photos of its unique cushioning material went viral online, the number of orders increased.
Azechhi Foods currently offers two package sizes — 40g and 13g — but Azechhi Foods hopes to start offering it in other sizes, as well as other styles of packaging to keep customers entertained.
46. What gave Wada the idea of launching Taberareru Kanshouzai?
A. A meeting about promoting popcorn.
B. A suggestion from her fellow worker.
C. A customer’s complaint about packaging.
D. A funny and unexpected use of popcorn.
47. What is an advantage of Taberareru Kanshouzai?
A. It is low-cost. B. It is eco-friendly. C. It is really durable. D. It is visually pleasing.
48. What does Wada’s idea turn out to be?
A. A success story. B. A worldwide trend.
C. A win-win decision. D. A high-risk strategy.
49. What might Azechhi Foods plan to do next?
A. Stop making popcorn cushions.
B. Offer more sizes and packaging styles.
C. Raise prices for popcorn cushions.
D. Switch to cardboard packaging.
50. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Popcorn: A Popular Food In Japan
B. Stuff Packages With Popcorn And Eat It
C. Wrap Your Popcorn Up And Snack On It
D. Azechhi Foods: The Leading Popcorn Maker
D
Being stuck in miles of stopped traffic is not a relaxing way to start or finish a holiday. And as we move slowly along the road, many of us will fantasize a future free of traffic jams.
As a mathematician and motorist I view traffic as a complex system, consisting of many interacting agents, including cars, trucks, cyclists and walkers. Sometimes these agents interact in a free-flowing way and at other times they simply come to a stop. All situations can be examined — and hopefully improved — using mathematical modeling. For instance, mathematical models tell us that if drivers kept within the variable speed limits on a motorway, traffic would flow consistently at, say, 50 mph.
However, we tend to drive more aggressively (激进地), speeding up as soon as the opportunity arises — and being forced to slow down moments later. The result is greater fuel consumption and a longer overall journey time. Cooperative driving seems to go against human nature when we get behind the wheel. But could this change if our roads were taken over by driverless cars?
In theory, driverless cars will typically drive within the speed limits, have faster reaction times allowing them to drive closer together and will behave less randomly than humans. Choosing the best route, accounting for barriers and traffic volume, driverless cars will behave in a more rational (理性的) way, as they can communicate with other cars and quickly change their route or driving behavior.
Of course, even integrating driverless cars into the best modeling, we could still get to the point where there are simply too many cars on the road, and traffic jams can occur. Yet there is still potential for self-driving cars to help. Some car makers expect that eventually we will stop viewing cars as possessions and instead simply treat them as a transport service. Again, by applying mathematical modeling, we could make this shared autonomous vehicle service operate most efficiently, reducing the overall number of cars on the road.
So a combination of driverless cars and mathematics might help navigate (导航) a smoother journey ahead.
51. What does the author think of traffic flow?
A. It is unpredictable and uncontrollable.
B. It depends heavily on drivers’ skills.
C. It is affected by many factors.
D. It follows strict patterns.
52. What is the major reason behind traffic problems?
A. Poor traffic planning. B. Wild driving behavior.
C. Terrible road conditions. D. Unreasonable speed limits.
53. How do you understand “cooperative driving” in paragraph 3?
A. Driving with passengers.
B. Driving that follows traffic rules.
C. Driving that adjusts to others.
D. Driving in large groups.
54. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about driverless cars?
A. How they may ensure road safety. B. How they reduce fuel use.
C. How they would improve traffic. D. How they could avoid barriers.
55. What might future transportation be like?
A. Fewer private cars.
B. Smarter navigation.
C. More urban motorways.
D. More efficient traffic rules.
第Ⅱ卷 (非选择题共35分)
第三部分:写作 (共两节;满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
When sports journalist Shireen Ahmed thinks about covering the 2024 Olympics, one moment stands out: a video she shot on her phone of her and her workmates at CBC taken just as the Canadian men’s team won the 4×100m relay.
That wasn’t the only viral moment from last year’s Games. In fact, Ahmed says she and her workmates used social media to cover the Olympics like never before. Some of the Games’ most viral moments took off owing to media companies or individual journalists’ posts, including photos of Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish shooter who went viral for his shooting stance (姿势), Likewise American gymnast Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowing to Brazilian Rebecca Andrade after she took gold in the women’s floor final, and Australia’s Rachael Gunn, whose awkward breakdancing drew the internet’s attention. These moments had a huge impact on how fans consumed the events.
However, one-off viral moments aren’t the only way social media has changed sports reporting, Ahmed says. The dissemination of information and the ways that happened have changed greatly, which enable people to have access to athletes and watch their own commentary about personal and social issues.
And media companies are increasingly relying on podcasting, a medium that has become hugely popular among audiences. According to a 2024 report from SiriusXM, there has been a 39 per cent rise in demand for sports podcasts since 2019. In 2022 alone, there was a 32 per cent increase in the number of sports podcasts being produced. At the same time, there was a 119 per cent growth in downloads, indicating podcast consumption grew more and faster.
To Ahmed, videos might be an even bigger game-changer, especially on TikTok. That social media app has become extremely popular with sports journalists, who often use the platform to share a quick hit of analysis or opinion, or to deliver a short but informative explainer video, which breaks down a particular aspect of sport in 60 seconds or so. These are an important part of the overall editorial strategy for many sports departments, she says, because these concise, interesting and sometimes unexpected videos are both fascinating to audiences and effective at keeping them watching.
56. How did social media influence the way people experienced the 2024 Olympics? (no more than 10 words)

57. What does the underlined word “dissemination” in paragraph 2 mean? (1 word)

【答案】Dear Chris,
Happy to hear from you. I’m delighted to explain the term “a living Lei Feng” to you. Lei Feng was a remarkable figure in Chinese history. He was a soldier who dedicated his life to helping others. “A living Lei Feng” refers to someone who embodies Lei Feng’s spirit, always being ready to offer a helping hand selflessly.
Let me share an example from my daily life. There is a volunteer at our local library, Mr. Wang. He’s retired but spends most of his free time at the library. He helps young kids find the right books for their reading levels, patiently answers their questions about the stories, and even organizes reading-sharing activities. His efforts have made the library a more vibrant place for everyone. We all consider him “a living Lei Feng”.
Chinese is a language rich in such vivid expressions that carry profound cultural values. Keep learning Chinese, and you’ll uncover a world of fascinating stories and ideas. Your curiosity and enthusiasm will surely pay off, making your exploration of this beautiful language even more rewarding.
