A 100-year-old shoe store in Iowa, America, is proving that there is a way to run a business in a small town even if you don’t use the Internet.
Weaver’s Leather Store has been open since 1925 and is still going strong. Their secret is just doing a good job for their customers. They always take time to listen to each customer’s needs and make sure they leave with the perfect fit. “We have shoes in every state,” Tim Weaver said. He is the third generation of Weavers who have made the shoe store their life’s dream.
“We never had a website—just word of mouth and people coming in,” said Tim. The way the store runs has changed little from how Tim’s father, LeRoy Weaver, ran it since he took over the business from his own father, which sets it apart from other stores. The machines the family uses are from many years ago. One of them was probably built in the 1930s.
Another thing that has given them an advantage is the stacked storage (堆叠式存储) of shoes. They probably have about 13,000 pairs of shoes. A salesman once told Tim, “You can never sell an empty shelf.” Therefore, they always make sure to keep the shelves full.
The future of the store looks bright as the next generation prepares to step in. Colin Weaver, 26, and his brother Tanner, 29, plan to someday take over the store. Colin shared his journey, saying that while he was considering his choices during college, he finally realized, “Nothing else could bring me the same joy and purpose that the store does.”
The family knows just how lucky they have been. In an age where technology and the Internet can make or break a company, this small shop has left a big footprint with not so much as an online ad. “Not too many people can say that. It’s an honor,” Tim said. “That’s what we’re here for—to keep the business going through generations.”
4. What is the key to Weaver’s Leather Store’s success?
A. Good online marketing. B. Excellent customer service.
C. A well-known salesman. D. A high-tech production line.
5. What is special about the store?
A. It depends on different machines.
B. It often changes its website design.
C. It offers skill development programs.
D. It sticks to a time-tested business model.
6. What does Colin’s realization during college mainly show?
A. His respect for shoemakers. B. His enjoyment of college life.
C. His love for the family business. D. His pressure from family expectations.
7. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. The Next Generation Take over Family Business
B. Century-old Shoe Shop Survive in Digital Age
C. The Future of An Old-Fashioned Shoe Shop
D. Technology Matters to Business Success
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. B

C
First impressions can be powerful. In less than a second, we make judgments about someone’s trustworthiness, attractiveness, and personality.
“The appearance of individuals generally leads to certain common assumptions (假定). We also know that these assumptions can influence real-life behaviors. Physically attractive people generally receive more positive treatment than less attractive individuals,” Marine Rougier, a researcher in Belgium, said. In scientific circles, this is known as the “halo effect”, and it shows that people rate attractive individuals more favorably for personality and characteristics.
But in today’s digital age, first impressions are often formed online, where photos can be changed using digital tools like filters (滤镜). So, can we still trust our first impressions when images can be so easily changed?
In a recent study, Rougier and her colleague, Jan De Houwer, showed participants photos of people with different levels of attractiveness. Participants formed first impressions, but then were told that the photos might have been edited to make the people look more or less attractive. Surprisingly, even after learning this, many participants stuck to their first impressions. But in a follow-up experiment, when participants were shown how easy it is to manage photos, they were much more likely to change their minds.
This “halo-update effect” shows that first impressions are malleable. For example, if someone is at first seen as confident and social due to their attractiveness, they may be reconsidered as less confident once it comes to light that their photo was edited.
What does this mean for us? It suggests that we can challenge first impressions with new information. So, if you’ve ever worried about leaving a bad first impression, don’t stress too much—people’s opinions can change. Just be careful with editing your photos too much, as it could lead others to form an overly positive view of your personal or professional image.
This research is a reminder that looks aren’t everything, and people’s understanding of us can keep changing over time. Whether online or in person, the chance to change someone’s first impression is always there.
8. What does the “halo effect” feature?
A. Judging easily by appearances.
B. Benefiting from favorable comments.
C. Seeking opinions from attractive people.
D. Applying common beliefs to individuals.
9. Which was key to the viewers’ change in the judgement in the study?
A. Extra advice on photography.
B. A wide selection of digital tools.
C. The use of popular social media sites.
D. The clear example of image improvement.
10. What does the underlined word “malleable” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Foolish. B. Reliable. C. Changeable. D. Meaningful.
11. What advice on online image management does the author offer?
A. Avoid unrealistic processing.
B. Show more professional photos.
C. Take traditional views on beauty.
D. Add detailed comments on images.

In the early 1970s American women gave birth, on average, to 2.12 children each. By 2018 that number had fallen to 1.73. Jordan Nickerson and David Solomon, professors at MIT, think they have found an interesting factor which helps explain this change: America’s increasingly protective child car-seat laws.
Their study examines the effect that car-seat policies may have had on American birth rates. During the 1980s, only the children aged under three had to be secured in child-safety seats. But since then, the requirements have been slowly increased. Today, most places in America make children sit in safety seats until their eighth birthdays. That concern for youngsters’ safety has had the unexpected consequence of fewer three-child families.
In drawing this conclusion they have connected population data with changes in state laws on safety seats. They discovered that stricter laws had no noticeable effects on the rates of births of first and second children, but with a drop, on average, of 0.73 percentage points in the number of women giving birth to a third while the first two were young enough to need safety seats.
The professors also made two other related observations. The reduction they saw was limited to families that did actually have access to a car. And space in the vehicle is the important factor. In pre-safety-seat days, putting three young children into the back of a family car was perfectly practical advice. Most such cars, though, can comfortably accommodate only two safety seats. So, as the child car-seat laws change, a family must wait longer time for a third child to fit in the car. Sometimes, that wait will mean no third child is ever born.
Unless, of course, the family concerned buys a bigger car. But average families have the obvious reasons not to do so — big cars cost more, and are more costly to run. Interestingly, Dr Nickerson and Dr Solomon found that the third-child deterrent (遏制作用) appears even stronger among wealthier families. As they observe, “large cars may reflect their real status and taste, which may make people unwilling to switch even when they can afford to.”
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Changes in American car-seat laws.
B. Ways to ensure children’s safety in cars.
C. Influence of car-seat laws on American birthrate.
D. The connection between cars and American birthrate.
13. What contributes to fewer three-child families according to Paragraph 4?
A. The space of the family car.
B. The family’s economic status.
C. The quality of child safety seats.
D. The desire to have a third child.
14. What can be inferred about big cars from the last paragraph?
A. They are helpful to increasing birthrates.
B. They are affordable to most families.
C. They are more popular among richer families.
D. They are unable to solve child birth rates problem.
15. How did the two professors reach the conclusion of their study?
A. By comparing data. B. By making surveys. C. By doing experiments. D. By holding interviews.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. A

D
