When I tried out for the football team during the summer before 9th grade, I never imagined how important this sport would become in my life. Football is a ___1___ sport, at times almost painful, and practices really test a team’s physical and mental limits. Without trust in my own ability and a strong sense of commitment, I would never have managed to continue after years of hard work — as a player, and with countless ___2___.
In the first year, I played on the defensive line. This was an amazing ___3___ that gave me a great sense of achievement. But in the last game of the season, I was seriously injured. I was prohibited from any physical activities for six months. After ___4___ a series of physical treatments, I returned to the field as a team captain. I practiced harder than ever to make up for my lost time.
In September, during my junior year, my name was mentioned in the local newspaper as the key defensive lineman (前锋) on the team. After playing a fantastic season, I was given the ___5___ of the Most Valuable Player.
___6___, my skills in football do not magically extend to other sports. During the winter break, I went on a snowboarding trip and seriously injured my right shoulder. I had to have four ___7___. Since I could not use my right arm for two months, I had to learn how to write and eat using my left hand.
___8___ life must go on. I knew that my own present efforts would decide my future, so I completed the strict training program to build up strength and improve flexibility in my ___9___. After an eight-month recovery, I was back to the field playing football, the sport I love.
In this sense, the world of football has taught me an important life lesson: _____10_____ and commitment make what seems impossible possible. This lesson from football is the one that can be applied to every part of life.

The Party of Their Lives
In Los Angeles’s infamous Skid Row, there are hundreds of children living on the streets or in shelters. It’s a place where dreams go to die. But one couple is determined to use their own experience with loss to foster a sense of hope.
In 2013, Mary Davis and her husband lost their first unborn kid. Refusing to let the heartbreak break them, they became volunteers in a Skid Row homeless shelter. They found that many of the kids there had never had a single birthday party before, so they decided to throw a birthday party for those homeless kids. They took over a room in the Union Rescue Mission and filled it with streamers, gifts and a cake. The kids were so excited that they made their own music — singing and clapping and, of course, laughing.
Since then, the couple have thrown a party each and every month. They routinely attract 250 kids and their parents. An hour before each party, volunteers arrive to set up the decorations and activities: face painting, balloon artists, a DJ, cake, and pizza. There are small presents for the kids celebrating their birthdays, but the Davis make sure there are more than enough to go around.
“I remember a mom came with her kid” Mary says. “It was their first night at the shelter, and her child had a birthday. We had an extra gift for her — pink headphones. The little girl was so excited. And her mom… she was crying. ‘I never imagined we would ever need to be in a shelter. I didn’t know what to expect. But I really didn’t expect a birthday party for my child.’ she cried with happiness.”
Doing her best to normalize these kids’ lives is both heartwarming and bittersweet, Mary says. “If you look outside, you see homeless person after homeless person on the street, and it reminds you that these kids don’t get to leave this area after the party.”
It may be why, after throwing 88 parties, she still cries after each one. She credits the kids in the shelter with helping her hold on to hope. “We didn’t realize how much joy they were going to bring us,” she told CBS News. “And it was so healing for both kids and us.”
14. How did the couple help the kids?
A. They raised much money. B. They rented many houses.

The facts of climate change are widely reported. It is noted that with a 2℃ increase in global temperatures, as compared with a 1.5℃ increase, about 61 million more people living in urban areas around the world will be exposed to severe drought(干旱). The problem with communicating these numbers, however, is that math anxiety — the experience of tension, fear or worry when facing mathematical problems — and the inability to understand and employ numerical concepts — are both quite common.
Despite high rates of innumeracy (数学盲), there are reasons to think that people may not ignore the information when they receive numbers. First, multiple past studies show that people often prefer getting numerical details over unclear description or purely verbal communication People also trust messages provided by medical professionals or journalists more when that communication includes numbers than when it does not. The use of specific numbers signals professionalism to readers.
But trade-offs exist. Given people’s anxiety about math and level of mathematical ability, there is an upper limit when communicating these kinds of details. In past research, it was found that people find numbers helpful, so long as there aren’t too many of them. No hard-and-fast rule suggests how many is too many — it depends on the complexity of the topic, people’s familiarity with the subject and their overall numeracy. Communicators therefore need to know and attend to their audience: if a speaker sees someone looking bored, for example, it’s a sign to back off on the numbers.
In addition to the possibility of being overloaded by numbers, their persuasive power could have consequences that communicators need to consider. Based on the most recent findings, more negative feelings about the posts containing numeric consequences of climate change are reported. To be clear, this doesn’t reflect math anxiety. Instead, these posts resulted in negative emotions because the numerically precise messages were stronger in conveying the disastrous consequences of climate change. If you can suggest actions that people feel they can carry through, that could ease the negative feelings that arise when they consider climate change’s consequences.
So whether you’re an environmentalist seeking to communicate more effectively over social media or looking for strategies to persuade family over the dinner table, there are a few lessons here. Find the key numerical data and share that. Think strategically about data presentation. When talking about climate change, include some proposed action. Given that past work suggests that sharing numbers builds trust, your readers or listeners may be more likely to follow your recommendations. When used wisely, numbers can help transform anxiety into action, which could help turn the tide in our fight against climate change.
17 What role do numbers play when introduced into professional communication?
A. They can arouse people’s anxiety about math.
B. They leave the audience even more confused.
C. They help make the message more reliable.
D. They don’t really change how people feel.
18. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The use of numbers in communication calls for caution.
B. The more numbers used, the more persuasive the message.
C. Numerically precise messages bring negative outcomes.
D. The audience’s response to numbers should be prioritized.
19. According to the passage, which of the following is an effective climate message?
A. Sea level rise: a ticking time bomb for coastal cities!
B. Cycle 5 miles daily, save 50% on carbon footprint!
C. 50% of species lost: a warning from climate change!
D. Plant more trees today enjoy fresher air tomorrow!
20. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Numbers: Origin of tension about climate change.
B. Numbers: Reason for high levels of math anxiety.
C. Numbers: Cause of boredom in public speaking.
D. Numbers: Aid in fighting environmental issues.

One evening, at home. You’re sitting comfortably on the sofa, watching your favorite Tv show. An ad comes up, showing a burger in its full glory and one person enjoying it. You think to yourself that your diet is about to take a bit. But we beg to differ.
In a series of studies, we found advertisements showing people eating junk food prompted people on a diet to eat less. While this may seem counterintuitive (反直觉的), these findings are in line with previous research on mental imagery.
Recent studies show merely imagining ourselves carrying out actions or experiencing emotions activates similar neural networks(神经网络)to those linked with their actual performance or experience.
The images we are exposed to throughout our lives hold the power to shape our experiences to a remarkable degree. According to neuroimage studies, the mere sight of someone being hit by a hammer will fire up the neural networks in our brain that are associated with pain. As a result, these images will trigger (引发) emotions and behavior consistent with feelings of pain.
Such effects also extend to food consumption. The field of consumption imagery refers to rich images of food consumption — for example, an ad showing the close-up of a pizza and someone eating it. Some studies have even indicated consumption imagery could cause people to wrongly recall having eaten the food on display. This is important because simply thinking that we have eaten something can make us feel full.
We invited 132 dieting students at our lab to watch an ad. Half of them saw an M&M’s advertisement full of consumption imagery: sweets, colors, and a person eating them. The other half of the students saw an ad with two animated (动画的) M&M’s at a supermarket cash register, with no consumption imagery.
We then gave each student a 70g cup of M&M’s and asked them to eat to their heart’s content. Among the students, those who saw the M&M’s advertisement containing consumption imagery ate fewer sweets than those who saw the ad without.
In the next study, we tested whether we could use these findings to promote healthy eating. We designed four ads and each participant was randomly selected to view one of the four ads.
People who viewed the ad requiring them to imagine themselves wolfing down the French fries indicated a desire to eat fewer chips than those who were exposed to the French fries ad without consumption imagery.
Those who had imagined themselves eating an apple were more likely to succumb to the potato chips than those who had visualized themselves eating the French fries.
These results go against the grain of current public practices that aim to promote healthy eating by relying on images of nutritious foods. However, our research indicates that healthy eating campaigns should include the consumption of unhealthy food.
21. Thinking that we have eaten something can make us feel full because ___________.
A. the images hold the power to increase the sharpness of our senses
B. it activates neural networks similar to those linked with actual eating
C. the consumption imagery makes us recall having eaten the food on display
D. it is in line with the previous research into how imagery affects eating habits
22. What conclusion can we draw from the experiment with M&M chocolates?
A. Animated images in the advertisement may discourage consumption.
B. The more inviting the food in the ad is, the more the viewers will eat.
C. Advertisements with consumption imagery prompt viewers to eat less.
D. Where we see the advertisement is more important than what we see in it.
23. The phrase “succumb to”(in paragraph 10)is closest in meaning to ___________.
A. give way to B. be addicted to
C. face up to D. be resistant to
24. Which of the following practices contributes to developing healthy eating habits?
A. Wolfing down junk food. B. Imagining eating an apple a day.
C. Saying no to grain. D. Watching others eating junk food.

You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place.“They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering.“They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around.Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail.Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart.Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others--and even themselves---to feel like victims, too.Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but al1around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime.Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
25. What does the word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. People and things around you. B. Opportunities and problems.
C Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings.
26. According to Paragraph 2, creators__________.
A. seem willing to experience failures in life B. possess the ability to predict future life
C. handle ups and downs of life wisely D. have potential to create something new
27. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To define victims and creators.
B. To evaluate victims against creators.
C. To explain the relationship between victims and creators.
D. To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.
28. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that_________.
A. strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims.
B. people need family support to deal with challengers in life.
C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains.
D. one's experiences determine his attitude toward life.
三、阅读与表达(共3小题;每小题2分,共6分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Throughout my childhood, I have learned the importance of strong relationships and gained knowledge, and wisdom from my elders, parents, and peers. I have done this through my experiences playing high school sports. And among all the sports that I played, football was the most crucial one in my development as an individual.
The conflict-solving and problem-solving skills I acquired from the team have influenced my development the most and inspired me to become a more courageous, truthful, and respectful person.
During my senior year of high school, my coach appointed me a captain of my football team. This put me into a position where my younger teammates would look up to me, and carefully watch my every move. The coach would always tell me that I was laying the foundation so that my younger teammates could benefit from it when they grew up. The constant pressure of my peers and those younger than me looking up to me made me cautious of my every action, and that is what I found ironic. I asked myself: ‘What makes us act different when people are watching, and why can’t I act like people are watching the decisions I make all the time’. This point in my life strengthened the character traits in me such as respect, leadership, etc.
Every sports team experiences disagreements and conflicts. As the season went on and things didn’t go as planned, I learned it isn’t as easy to be the person that everyone looks up to. However, as my coach used to say, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” I realized that how I carried myself could affect how everyone else on my team did, and that if they saw me sulking through the locker room, they would do the same. When the team was in a state of confusion and disappointment, I shall never give it up, but be more determined to step up and solve the problems head-on.
Playing football brought me many challenges, but also invaluable lessons that I will never forget and hope to pass on to my children one day.

【66题答案】
【答案】例文
Dear Jim,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling stressed and having trouble adjusting to your new high school life. Please know that you’re not alone — many students experience similar challenges during this transition.
First, I suggest you break your tasks into smaller, manageable parts. This can make your study load feel less overwhelming. Also, try to set aside some time each day for activities you enjoy, like listening to music or taking a walk. This can help clear your mind and reduce stress.
To adapt to the new environment, why not join a school club or take part in sports? It’s a great way to meet like-minded friends and feel more connected. Don’t hesitate to talk to your teachers or classmates if you need help — most people are happy to offer support.
Remember, it takes time to adjust. Be patient with yourself and take things one step at a time. I believe you’ll soon find your rhythm and start enjoying high school.
Yours,
Li Hua
