Are you looking for some club suitable for you in the senior high school? Here are some introductions of popular clubs.
Speech Club
Do you enjoy talking? Do you think you can be a future lawyer? Try out for the school’s speech team. Not only will you meet people and make new friends, you’ll also get to practice public speaking, a valuable, important tool that you will use at every stage of your life. By researching, talking about, and debating hot-button political, social, cultural, and environment topics, you will also become more aware and up-to-date on current events.
Band Club
Are you in a band in junior high? If so, you probably remember always hanging around with your musical partners. If you haven’t joined one of these three high school clubs yet, you should! Most high school bands give performances, and even go on trips to Disneyland. Not sure? Did I mention that studies show that students with music education tend to receive higher grades? You read it right.
Red Cross Club
If you are interested in the medical field or planning to take a combined M.D. program, perhaps you should consider joining your school’s American Red Cross Club. As part of the high school club working with the local Red Cross chapter, you can become a lifeguard, learn how to perform CPR, or become a trained instructor who teaches others.
Language Clubs
Are you a native Spanish, French, or German speaker? Or maybe you just really like the foreign language class! Either way, you should consider joining your school’s language clubs and learn a new language during your past time. Spanish, French and German clubs put on several charity and cultural events throughout the academic year. You could be helping others in need, and making new friends all at the same time!

I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time. It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day.
About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off during practice and broke my left leg. All I could do was to wait for the injuries to heal. The worry was that the doctors suggested bed rest for at least two months. A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet, I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race.
It was very difficult for me to just stop like this. My father felt bad too. He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest. My parents gave me nutritious (有营养的) food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship.
Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation. Gradually, I was walking comfortably and exercising too. I practised as much as I could.
Finally, the big day came. I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the race track, the fear had gone. The race began. I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium was cheering me on. It was just amazing.
34. What was the friend’s attitude to the author’s participation in the race?
A. He doubted it. B. He was against it.
C. He was hopeful about it. D. He paid little attention to it.
35. What did the author’s parents do during the two months?
A. They taught him how to take chances.
B. They helped him prepare for next year’s race.
C. They made it possible for him to enter the race.
D. They let him realise the importance of healthy diets.
36. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Honest. B. Creative. C. Warm-hearted. D. Strong-minded.
37. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My Most Special Day. B. My Unfortunate Experience.
C. A Long Bed Rest After an Injury. D. An Exciting Bicycle Race in My School.

On December 26, 2004, hundreds of tourists relaxed on Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park’s beaches. But at mid-morning the park’s elephants began crying wildly and running away from the ocean and up a nearby hill. The puzzled keepers could tell the animals were worried about something but what?
What the keepers did not know was that a 30-foot wall of water was headed straight toward them. This tsunami(海啸) had been caused by an earthquake more than 1, 000 miles away in the Indian Ocean. When the huge wave hit the coast, it caused severe damage. Many people died. The elephants, however, were not swept away by the water. They stood safely on the hill.
Scientists have long suspected that animals sense natural disasters before humans do. People have told stories of dogs refusing to go outside and sharks swimming to deeper waters before a hurricane. After the 2004 tsunami, people said they saw tigers, monkeys, and water buffalo escaping to higher ground before the waters rushed in. Even in the hardest-hit areas of southern Asia, there were few animal deaths.
It’s unlikely that an animal’s so-called sixth sense comes from some magical power to see into the future. Experts believe that animals may be more sensitive (敏感的) than humans to changes in temperature and other environmental conditions that take place before a natural disaster. The elephants in Sri Lanka, for example, may have picked up vibrations from within the Earth, a sign that earthquake was coming. Because vibrations in the ground travel much faster than an ocean wave, the elephants may have felt the earthquake that caused the tsunami well before the tsunami itself came to the coast.
A few scientists are calling for a system to track reports of strange behavior in people’s pets, hoping that these reports can serve as a warning system that a natural disaster is about to happen. But Marina Haynes, an animal behavior scientist at the Philadelphia Zoo, says, “It would be an unreliable way to predict disasters. It can be difficult to know what an animal is doing. Is the animal nervous because an earthquake is about to happen or is it frightened because there is an enemy nearby?”
38. What happened to the elephants in Yala National Park on December 26, 2004?
A. They died in the natural disaster.
B. They were disturbed by the tourists.
C. They moved from the hill to the seaside.
D. They behaved strangely before the tsunami.
39. The author supports his point of view in paragraph 3 mainly by _______.
A. giving examples B. making comparisons
C. telling interesting stories D. showing research findings
40. The underlined word vibrations in paragraph 4 means _______.
A. changes in temperature B. a kind of chemical power
C. continuous shaking movement D. serious environmental pollution
41. What may be Marina Haynes’ attitude towards the warning system in the last paragraph?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Supportive.

If there’s one cliché (陈词滥调) that really annoys Danah Boyd, a specialist researcher who has made a career from studying the way teenagers use the web, it’s that of the digital native. “Today the world has computer-mediated communications. Thus, in order to learn about their social world around them, teenagers are learning about those things too. And they’re using that to work out the stuff that kids have always worked out: peer (同龄人) sociality, status, etc.” she says.
It’s no surprise Boyd takes exception, really. As one of the first digital anthropologists to dig into the way teenagers use social networking sites, she gained insights into the social web by taking a closer look at what was going on.
Lately, her work has been about explaining new ways of interpreting (理解) the behavior we see online. She outlined some examples at a recent conference in San Francisco, including the case of a young man from one of the poorest districts of Los Angeles who was applying for a top American college. The applicant said he wanted to escape the influence of violence, but the admissions officer was shocked when he discovered that the boy’s MySpace page was covered with precisely the violent language he claimed to hate. “Why was he” lying about his motivations?” asked the university. “He wasn’t,” said Boyd. “In his world, showing the right images online was a key part of surviving daily life.”
Understanding what’s happening online is especially important, for today’s teenagers have a vastly different approach to privacy from their parents. She says, “Adults think of the home as a very private space. That’s often not the case for teenagers because they have little or no control over who has access to it, or under what conditions. As a result, the online world can feel more private because it feels like there’s more control.”
The concept of control is central to Boyd’s work, and it applies to pointing out the true facts about teenage behavior. Boyd suggests control remains in the same places as it always did.
“Technologists all go for the idea of techno-utopia, the web as great democratizer (民主化)”, she says. “But we’re not actually democratizing the whole system; we’re just shifting the way in which we discriminate.”
It’s a call to arms that most academic researchers would tend to sidestep, but then Boyd admits to treading a fine line (处于困境) between academics and activists. “The questions I continue to want to ask are the things that are challenging to me; having to sit down and be forced to think about uncomfortable social stuff, and it’s really hard to get my head around it, which means it’s exactly what I should dive in and deal with,” she says.
42. What does Danah Boyd think of “computer-mediated communications”?
A. They teach teenagers about social interaction.
B. They replace other sorts of social interaction for teenagers.
C. They are necessary for teenagers to have social interaction.
D. They are barriers to wider social interaction among teenagers.
43. Why does Danah Boyd cite the example of the Los Angeles college applicant?
A. To show how easy it is to investigate somebody’s online activity.
B. To explain how easy it is to misinterpret an individual online activity.
C. To prove how important it is to check the content of someone’s online activity.
D. To express how necessary it is to judge someone’s sincerity from his online activity.
44. Danah Boyd argues in Paragraph 4 that ______.
A. parents tend not to respect teenagers’ need for online privacy
B. teenagers are less concerned about privacy than their parents
C. teenagers feel more private in the online world than in the home
D. parents value the idea of privacy less in a domestic environment
45. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Danah Boyd ______.
A. is willing to take on research challenges others would avoid
B. regards herself as being more of an activist than a researcher
C. is aware that she is lacking in ability to deal with the challenges
D. feels like abandoning the research into uncomfortable social stuff

As online learning becomes more common and more resources are changed to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and everyone should be given a tablet (平板电脑).
Supporters of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they can simply click on what they want to read wherever they are.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. Digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs. book reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, remember 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read, compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause health problems, including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes and headaches, at much higher instances than reading print does. We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at screens.
It is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have a lot of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to talk to their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering questions, and keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted community events such as play times for kids and parents, job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces for senior citizens, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community. Therefore, people see libraries as a way to connect with others and get their questions answered, which are benefits that tablets can’t offer as well or as easily.
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the many issues surrounding them. It would also end access to many library benefits that people have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.

第二节:听下面3段对话, 每段对话后有两道小题,从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。每段对话你将听两遍。
听下面一段对话,回答第5至第6小题。
M: Have you finished the video project about student life?
W: Yes, I’ve already emailed it to our professor.
M: Good for you! I haven’t done it yet. It’s so hard…
W: Actually, I’ve enjoyed this project very much.
M: Why do you like it?
W: Well, it is a great chance to get to know other students in our college.
M: I like that, too. We don’t usually have much time to do that.
W: In fact, I’ve already made a few friends through this project.
M: Wow, that’s great!
听下面一段对话,回答第7至第8小题。
M: Mary, about our speech on reading, what’s your idea?
W: Maybe we can talk about digital reading, audio books and online reading courses.
M: Well, since it’s a short speech, we’d better focus on one thing.
W: Right. Do you think digital reading is a good topic?
M: I know lots of books have been digitalized and people can read them on their computers or phones at any time, but …
W: You don’t like that?
M: Personally, I still prefer reading real books, you know, the ones I can actually hold in my hands.
W: Totally agree! I find it hard to concentrate when reading on a screen.
M: And it always takes longer to read on a screen, too.
W: I think we have our topic.
M: The problems with digital reading!
W: Yes! Let’s go with that!
听下面一段对话,回答第9至第10小题。
W: Hi, can I help you?
M: Is this the Student Service Center? I’d like to learn about the course on Programming.
W: You certainly have come to the right place! I’m Jessica, the teaching secretary.
M: Nice to meet you. I’m Anderson Redden.
W: So, Anderson, have you seen our course introduction yet?
M: Yes. In fact, I thought the course introduction was really useful, but I still can’t decide which course to choose: full-time or part-time.
W: Well, I think each type has its advantages and disadvantages, so it really depends. Are you busy now?
M: Yes. I’m working part-time.
W: Are you planning to finish the course as soon as possible?
M: I’m in no rush.
W: Alright. Usually, students like you have two choices: either take the part-time course, which lasts over two years and you don’t have to take any time off work--or the full-time course, which means you might have to quit your job.
M: But I need this job to support myself.
W: In that case, you can take the part-time course. You can join an evening class and attend lectures twice a week.
M: This sounds acceptable.
第三节: 听下面一段独白,根据题目要求在相应的横线上写下第11题至第15题的关键信息。每小题仅填写一个词。这段独白你将听两遍。
Welcome to Ecolife Agricultural Park. We have many wonderful indoor and outdoor areas open to visitors throughout the year.
Our park aims to give educational opportunities to the public, to awaken interest in plant life and to provide visitors enjoyment. As you can see on our map, we are now at the north gate. On our left is the Green Ranch, which we will visit first. This is the largest area of the park, and we raise different animals like horses, sheep and cattle there. Next, as we leave the Green Ranch, we can spend some time walking around the lake—that’s the Fish Farm, where all kinds of fish can be seen. Many of the fish are for sale, so you’re also welcome to buy the ones you like. Farther into the south corner is the Angel Garden, where a wide variety of flowers are grown. It’s one of the most popular areas in our park because it is an all-season garden—it always feels like spring time!
