The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation. The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period: Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles of artists across Europe. With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention, taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created during these decades. Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide. Ticket prices Free for Members Priority booking open for Members. Join today to get early access to tickets, plus enjoy the exhibition in advance on 24 March. She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and make-up services for the homeless. And Shirley is now the CNN Hero of the Year! In 1990, Raines’ 2-year-old son Demetrius passed away from accidental poisoning while at his grandma's house. This event caused a lot of pain for Shirley Raines. The pain lasted for many years. And she did not know what to do about it. She struggled to understand what her purpose was in life. Until one day six years ago, Shirley visited the skid row with a friend from church who asked her to volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people and realized how much help they needed, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves and their own worth and beauty. Shirley started to volunteer every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her make-up, hair, and style. She started to offer to “make up” the homeless. They loved it, she loved it, they loved her and she loved them. She found purpose. So she started an outdoor beauty salon to serve the homeless, which took most of her spare time. Raines started sharing her efforts on Instagram with photos and even livestreaming (网络直播) some of her events. Things took off. She formed her nonprofit organization, Beauty 2 The Streetz, and her followers quickly began donating money or time to expand Shirley’s impact. Her Instagram followers grew to over 200,000 people, including many beauty professionals such as licensed hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists. Many of them regularly donate money to keep the services rolling. Others donate their time to help Shirley serve the homeless. Shirley’s boldness caring, courage, consistency (连贯性), and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on people’s lives. And she also serves as a role model for and an inspiration to others. 4. How did Shirley change her sad feeling and live purposefully? A. By livestreaming her daily life. B. By giving a hand to the homeless. C. By taking good care of her family members. D. By interacting with her fans in her free time. 5. What is the most likely to make Shirley the CNN Hero of the Year? A. Her strong character. B. Her make-up services. C. Her creative idea. D. Her charitable acts. 6. Why are some beauty professionals mentioned in the fourth paragraph? A. To show their contributions to the organization. B. To introduce the regulation of Shirley's program. C. To explain the structure of the organization. D. Locked safely behind the blood-brain barrier, it was broadly free of the harm of viruses and the battles started by the immune system Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder: is the brain really so separated from the body? The answer, according to a growing body of evidence, is no. The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing. Changes in the makeup of the microorganisms in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. There is also a theory that infection during pregnancy could lead to brain diseases in babies. The effect is two-way. There is a lengthening list of symptoms not typically viewed as disorders of the nervous system, but the brain plays a large part in them. For example, the development of a fever is influenced by a population of nerve cells that control body temperature and appetite. Evidence is mounting that cancers use nerves to grow and spread. The interconnection between the brain and body has promising implications for our ability to both understand and treat illnesses. If some brain disorders start outside the brain, then perhaps treatments for them could also reach in from outside. Treatments that take effect through the digestive system, the heart or other organs, would be much easier and less risky than those that must cross the blood-brain barrier. It also works in the opposite direction. Study shows mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulation to a brain area involved in positive emotion and motivation. Activation of the brain reward centre — called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) — seems to cause immune changes that contribute to it. Working out how this happens could help to destroy cancers, enhance responses to vaccines and even re-evaluate physical diseases that, for centuries, have not been considered as being psychologically driven. 8. What do the researchers focus on about the brain? A. Its protecting system. B. Its exposure to diseases. C. Its controlling function. D. Its connection to the body. 9. How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2? A. By explaining a theory. B. By providing examples. C. By making comparisons. D. By presenting cause and effect. 10. Which best describes treatments that do not cross the blood-brain barrier? A. Cheaper. B. More specific. C. Safer. D. More direct. 11. What does the study suggest in the last paragraph? A. Brain health depends on immune changes. B. Brain stimulation leads to negative emotions. C. The brain can help enhance psychological health. D. The brain may be key to treating physical diseases. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder: is the brain really so separated from the body? The answer, according to a growing body of evidence, is no. (然后,大约20年前,一些研究人员开始怀疑:大脑真的与身体如此分离吗?根据越来越多的证据,答案是否定的。)”可知,研究人员主要研究大脑与身体的联系。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing. Changes in the makeup of the microorganisms in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. There is also a theory that infection during pregnancy could lead to brain diseases in babies. (与身体其他部位变化相关的大脑状况清单很长,而且还在不断增加。消化系统中微生物组成的变化与帕金森病等疾病有关。还有一种理论认为,怀孕期间的感染可能会导致婴儿脑部疾病。)”可知,这一段作者主要通过消化系统和怀孕期间的感染2个例子来论证自己的观点,说明大脑并不是身体中保护最严密的部分。故选B。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Treatments that take effect through the digestive system, the heart or other organs, would be much easier and less risky than those that must cross the blood-brain barrier. (通过消化系统、心脏或其他器官进行治疗比必须穿过血脑屏障的治疗更容易,风险更小。)”可知,不通过血脑屏障的治疗风险更小。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Study shows mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulation to a brain area involved in positive emotion and motivation. (研究表明,在大脑中涉及积极情绪和动机的区域受到刺激后,小鼠的心脏更健康。大脑奖赏中心——被称为腹侧被盖区(VTA)——的激活似乎会导致免疫变化。弄清楚这种情况是如何发生的,可以帮助摧毁癌症,增强对疫苗的反应,甚至重新评估几个世纪以来一直不被认为是心理驱动的物理疾病。)”可知,大脑可能是治疗身体疾病的关键。故选D。 D A new study has revealed that a prehistoric sea cow was the target of two different predators (捕食动物) — an ancient crocodile and a tiger shark, providing rare insights into the complex food chains from millions of years ago. The research, conducted by an international team of scientists and published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, uncovers one of the few known instances where a single prey (猎物) was attacked by many predators. The sea cow, belonging to the extinct group Culebratherium, was first attacked by a crocodile. Evidence then shows that after the initial attack, the sea cow’s remains were searched by a tiger shark, a tooth of which was found near the unlucky animal’s neck. “Have you seen the Batman movie? There is a scene where he and Alfred are shooting bullets to try and figure out which specific type of bullet they are trying to find, ” said Benites-Palomino, lead author of the research. “Our research was conducted in exactly the same way. We have these experiments in the wild where predators are attacking their prey, and then afterwards we try to compare which is the best scene for what we’re finding there.” The find is particularly significant as it adds to the limited fossil record of multiple predators interacting with a single prey. Such interactions are common in today’s ecosystems, but are rarely documented in the fossil record, making this discovery an important piece of the puzzle in understanding ancient food webs. “We have been unsure as to which animals would have served this purpose as a food source for multiple predators. Our previous research has identified sperm whales searched by several shark species, and this new research highlights the importance of sea cows within the food chain, ” Benites- Palomino said in a statement. The digging, directed by Marcelo Sanchez- Villagra, head of the Palaeontological Institute and Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, was both challenging and rewarding. The site was initially discovered by a local farmer who spotted unusual rocks, inspiring the team to investigate further and eventually unearth the sea cow fossils. 12. What do we know about the prehistoric sea cow? A. It reached the top of food chains. B. It is thought to have complex teeth. C. It belongs to an endangered species. D. It was attacked by two different animals. 13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The scene of animal fights. B. The method of the research. C. The introduction of a movie. D. The danger of the experiments. 14. What does the importance of the study lie in? A. Challenging the current ecosystems. B. Offering insights into ancient food webs. C. Clarifying the misunderstanding of sea cows. D. Figuring out the link between man and nature. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. The Batman Movie Inspired a Research B. A Puzzle in Complex Ancient Food Chains C. Shark and Crocodile Ate Unlucky Sea Cow D. An Important Biological Discovery of a Farmer 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. Mary was skipping rope on the playground surrounded by several classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang-class was over. Mary packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. White. That morning, Ms. White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was out sick, and someone needed to step in. Mary was shocked that Ms. White had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. White reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let her know her decision after school. Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Mary felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground. Mary was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn't get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Mary reminded him that he wasn't good at it, but Tom simply said that he knew that-and that it wasn't about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced! Mary stood there, watching Tom practicing patiently and hard. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mary stood there, watching Tom practicing patiently and hard. Every time he jumped, he would stumble a little, but he never stopped. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and adjusted his posture, then tried again. Mary thought about how Tom was willing to take on something he wasn’t good at just to help his class. She felt a little ashamed of herself—she was scared of showing her bad handwriting, but what if she could try her best like Tom? Maybe the bulletin board wouldn’t be perfect, but she could put her heart into it. The nervous feeling in her stomach slowly faded, and a new sense of determination took its place. She turned around and headed straight for the teachers’ office, her steps no longer hesitant. With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. Ms. White was sitting at her desk, grading papers. When she saw Mary, she looked up and smiled, “Have you made your decision?” Mary took a deep breath and nodded firmly, “Yes, Ms. White. I’d like to take charge of the class bulletin board.” She then added, “My handwriting isn’t good, but I’ll practice and do my best to make it nice. I want to help our class, just like Tom is helping his.” Ms. White’s eyes lit up with pride. She stood up and patted Mary’s shoulder, “That’s what I wanted to hear, Mary. Bravery to try is more important than being perfect. I’ll be right here to help you.” Mary left the office with a big smile on her face, already looking forward to starting her new task. 尝试:try/attempt ②.帮助:help/assist/aid ③.擅长:be good at/do well in 情绪类 ①.害怕的:scared/afraid/frightened ②.焦虑的: nervous/anxious/uneasy 【点睛】[高分句型1]. A. To demonstrate the diversity of volunteers. 7. Which does the author probably suggest readers do? A. Think twice before we leap. B. Stay optimistic all the time. C. Pass on love. D. Never give up. C For decades, scientists thought of the brain as the most valuable and consequently most closely guarded part of the body. Locked safely behind the blood-brain barrier, it was broadly free of the harm of viruses and the battles started by the immune system Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder: is the brain really so separated from the body? The answer, according to a growing body of evidence, is no. The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing Changes in the makeup of the microorganisms in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. 8. D A new study has revealed that a prehistoric sea cow was the target of two different predators (捕食动物) — an ancient crocodile and a tiger shark, providing rare insights into the complex food chains from millions of years ago. Mary was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates watching her. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
