Amazon is shifting from plastic air pillows to recycled paper for packaging in North America because it’s more environmentally friendly, and it said that its paper just works better.
The company said it’s already replaced 95 percent of the plastic air pillows with paper filler in North America and is working toward complete removal.
“We want to ensure that customers receive their items undamaged while using as little packaging as possible to avoid waste and prioritize recyclable materials,” Amazon said.
It is the company’s largest plastic packaging reduction effort in North America to date and will remove almost 1.5 billion plastic air pillows from use annually.
The e-commerce giant has faced years of criticism about its use of plastic from environmental groups. The company revealed the total of single-use plastic across global operations for the first time in 2022 after investors sought more details on plans to reduce waste. The company said it used 85,916 metric tons of single-use plastic that year, an 11.6 percent decrease from 2021.
Amazon discovered through testing that the 100 percent recyclable, curbside recyclable paper filler offers the same, if not better, protection during shipping compared to plastic air pillows. Christian Garcia, from Amazon’s fulfillment center in Bakersfield, California, stated that the paper filler is easier to work with and the machinery provides more space to pack orders.
Ongoing Amazon efforts to reduce waste include a campaign to ship items without additional packaging, with 11 percent of the company’s packages in 2022 shipped worldwide without added delivery packaging. Other initiatives involve piloting new technology with the AI and robotics company Glacier to automate the sorting of recyclables and collect real-time data on recycling streams as well as partnering with the US Department of Energy on new materials and recycling programs.
24. Why is Amazon replacing plastic air pillows with recycled paper?
A. To bring down shipping costs. B. To increase packaging efficiency.
C. To enhance customer satisfaction. D. To reduce its environmental impact.
25. What caused Amazon to reveal its data on plastic usage in 2022?
A. Investor demands. B. Customer complaints.
C. Government regulations. D. Pressure from environmental groups.
26. What do we know about paper filler according to Amazon?
A. It requires less packaging material.
B. It is easier for customers to handle.
C. It is equally effective during shipping.
D. It costs much less but takes up more space.
27. What is Amazon currently doing to reduce waste?
A. Trying out new technologies. B. Reducing product sizes and weights.
C. Partnering with environmental groups. D. Initiating a global fight to ban plastic.

First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot (笨蛋) in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are brief and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you, you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression. Other times, it can be disappointing — imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only to part ways before exchanging contact information.
To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable — but not something foolish. Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh. This means taking risks and avoiding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s all you offer, you’ll likely be pushed to the back of their memory, unlikely to be remembered again.
But what if you messed up your first impression? And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere...”
In that case, your second impression needs to be better. In my 19 years of making first impressions — some not so great — I’ve found that people will give you a second chance if you give them something to care about. Just because you messed up the first time doesn’t mean you should withdraw and stop being interesting. If anything, you should try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questions, smile often, tell a joke, and share what you care about.
None of this is a guaranteed “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work.
Anyway if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one.
28. What does paragraph 2 focus on about first impressions?
A. They are brief and temporary. B. They are casual and interesting.
C. They are important and lasting. D. They are negative and dynamic.
29. How can you make a memorable first impression, according to the author?
A. By engaging in small talk. B. By avoiding risky behavior.
C. By demonstrating insight or humor. D. By sharing your personal experiences.
30. What tone does the author take when discussing the effectiveness of his advice?
A. Playful. B. Uncertain. C. Serious. D. Convincing.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Making a Good First Impression B. The True Art of First Impression
C. Why Second Impression More D. The Lasting Impact of First Impression
D
The Ediacaran Period, spanning from about 635 to 541 million years ago, was a crucial time in Earth’s history. It marked a transformative era during which complex, multicellular organisms (多细胞生物) emerged, setting the stage for an explosion of life. But how did this explosion of life unfold?
Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York US, have uncovered strong evidence that Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) was in a highly unusual state when the large animals of the Ediacaran Period diversified and thrived. According to John Tarduno, a professor of geophysics in the university’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, one of the most remarkable life forms during the Ediacaran Period was the Ediacaran fauna — a handful of strange creatures found in Australia, Canada and the English Midlands. They were notable for looking like early animals and some even reached more than a meter in size and were able to move, indicating that they probably needed more oxygen compared to earlier life forms.
Tarduno and his team used innovative strategies and techniques to examine the strength of the magnetic field by studying magnetism locked in ancient feldspar and pyroxene crystals (辉石晶体) from a rock called anorthosite. These crystals contain magnetic particles (粒子) that preserve magnetization from the time the minerals were formed. By dating the rocks, researchers can construct a timeline of the development of Earth’s magnetic field. Their data indicates that Earth’s magnetic field during the Ediacaran Period was the weakest known to date, lasting for at least 26 million years.
A weak magnetic field makes it easier for charged particles from the sun to strip away lightweight atoms such as hydrogen from the atmosphere. If hydrogen loss is significant, more oxygen may remain in the atmosphere. Instead of reacting with hydrogen to form water vapor. These reactions can lead to a buildup of oxygen over time.
The research suggests that during the Ediacaran Period, the extremely weak magnetic field caused a loss of hydrogen over at least tens of millions of years. This loss may have led to increased oxygen in the atmosphere and ocean, enabling more advanced life forms to emerge.
32. What did the researchers aim to find out?
A. The origin of multicellular organisms.
B. The link between oxygen and ecosystems.
C. The impact of Earth’s magnetic field on life.
D. The effects of climate change on biodiversity.
33. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By analyzing evolution of Ediacaran fauna.
B. By examining magnetism in ancient minerals.
C. By modeling the atmospheric changes in the lab.
D. By comparing different periods in Earth’s history.
34. What does the underlined phrase “strip away” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Remove. B. Cover. C. Gather. D. generate.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The significance of the research.
B. A suggestion for further research.
C. An analysis of the research method.
D. An explanation for the research results.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you’re like most Americans, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. ___36___ Poor sleep has been linked to high blood pressure, high cholesterol (高胆固醇), inflammation (炎症), heart attacks and more.
One way to deal with this is to catch up on your sleep when you can, especially on weekends. ___37___ But can it really undo the cardiac (心脏的)damage that comes from a sleep-poor work week? According to a new study presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology, it might.
The study looked at data from nearly 91,000 people in the UK Biobankproject, a large health database. ___38___ Those who averaged fewer than seven hours — about 22 people of the group — were considered sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的). Some participants wore sleep-tracking devices that measured how much extra sleep they got on weekends.
___39___ The study found that sleep-deprived people who got the most extra sleep on weekends — at least 90 minutes more than usual — had about a 20 percent lower risk of various heart-related illnesses, compared to those who got the least extra sleep on weekends.
Weekend catch-up sleep may have this effect in several ways. During sleep, the heart rate slows down and blood pressure can drop by 10 to 20 percent, a process called nocturnal dipping (夜间血压下降). Poor sleep can also cause inflammation, which can lead to heart disease. ___40___
A. It may help you feel more rested.
B. It has positive impacts on heart health.
C Participants reported how much sleep they got each night.
D. They suffer from mental health disorders due to lack of sleep.
E. However, catching up on sleep helps reduce this inflammation.
F. The researchers then checked on their heart health 14 years later.
G. This lack of sleep can be harmful to your body, especially your heart.

As they sat watching their favorite TV show, Mark’s dad’s trademark cough echoed from the other room. Each time he heard that sound, Mark’s heart sank. He shifted uncomfortably, trying to focus on the screen, but his mind kept returning to the damage the cigarettes were doing to his father’s lungs.
Mark couldn’t understand it. His dad was brilliant and spent quality time with him — why would he risk his health? What if it led to an early death? Had he ever considered how heartbroken it would make him and his mom?
Mark’s mind wandered back to a conversation he had overheard between his parents. His mom had been pleading (恳求) with his dad, her voice full of worry. “You need to think about your health, for Mark’s sake if not for your own,” she had said. But his dad just brushed her off, saying he was too stressed to quit.
One evening, Mark approached his mom to discuss the issue. “I’ve tried to persuade him to quit,” Mark’s mom expressed with a sigh. “But he always gets annoyed whenever I bring up the subject.” She looked tired and defeated. “At least your dad is considerate with his smoking; he never does it indoors or around others. He even changes his clothes to prevent us from smelling the smoke. Despite that, it’s still so hard on him, on us...”
The next day at school, Mark was playing basketball with his classmate Tim on the court. “Hey, does either of your parents smoke?” he asked. “Yeah, my dad smokes, but he’s cut down in the past year,” replied Tim. “Oh, how did he do that?” Mark asked curiously. “I don’t really know what happened. I guess he just realized it was time for a change,” said Tim, as he threw the ball back to Mark. The reply gave Mark a ray of hope — and an idea.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: Do you think so? I love science fiction films, and they make me wonder what it would be like to live on the Moon.
M: Well, it would be hard to breathe, and there is no food to eat there.
W: You know what I mean — with the help of technology, people can live inside special space buildings, like in the films.
M: Oh, I see. They would need a continuous supply of oxygen and I’m not sure how easy that would be. But scientists are developing that kind of thing all the time.
W: What about water? There isn’t any on the Moon.
M: That’s true, but I know astronauts recycle water when on the International Space Station.
W: Recycle the water? How?
M: Er…how do you think?
W: Ugh! You mean water that comes out of their bodies?
M: Ha-ha! Yes! It sounds horrible, but the water is treated.
W: How awful! My stomach is turning just thinking about it. I think I’ll stay on the Earth!

【答案】17. C 18. C 19. A 20. A
【解析】
【原文】It is easy to get confused by many different kinds of English spoken all over the world. Native English speakers come from many different places, including America, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and even my home country — South Africa. Although they all speak English, they do not say everything in the same way.
There are a few important differences. Sometimes the pronunciation will be different. At other times, the vocabulary will not be the same. If you learn these differences, you will have a much easier time understanding native English speakers, no matter where they are from.
People from Britain are known for speaking with very clear, polite English. But this is not true for all British people. In reality, mainly upper-class English people in the South speak this way.
British people use many of their own special words too. If you hear a British person cry out, “I’m knackered (疲惫不堪的)!”, it means “I’m very tired!” And when it is cold, British people wear their “jumpers”, which is the British word for sweater.

Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression.
Anyway, if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. B

The Ediacaran Period, spanning from about 635 to 541 million years ago, was a crucial time in Earth’s history. It marked a transformative era during which complex, multicellular organisms (多细胞生物) emerged, setting the stage for an explosion of life. But how did this explosion of life unfold?
Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, US, have uncovered strong evidence that Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) was in a highly unusual state when the large animals of the Ediacaran Period diversified and thrived.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. D

C. Participants reported how much sleep they got each night.
D. They suffer from mental health disorders due to lack of sleep.
E. However, catching up on sleep helps reduce this inflammation.
F. The researchers then checked on their heart health 14 years later.
G. This lack of sleep can be harmful to your body, especially your heart.
【答案】36. G 37. A 38. C 39. F 40. E

At 8:30 am, more than 50 student volunteers gathered at the community center. Divided into small groups, we set out to clean up the public areas, carefully collecting litter from sidewalks and gardens. The highlight of the activity was our communication with residents. 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The next day, Mark found a note from his dad on his bed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
Mark decided to take action. He started by moving his dad’s cigarettes from their usual spot and replacing them with printed statistics about the harmful effects of smoking. He also hid the cigarette lighters, thinking that even a small inconvenience might help. Moreover, he spent hours researching online, finding stories of people who had successfully quit, hoping they would inspire his dad. Finally, he wrote a heartfelt letter titled “Please Stop Smoking” and left it on his dad’s pillow.
The next day, Mark found a note from his dad on his bed. It read, “Son, I truly appreciate your efforts. I know it’s bad for me and I want to stop too, but it’s tough.” Recognizing his dad’s struggle, Mark shifted his approach from persuasion to partnership. They became a team, talking openly about triggers, trying nicotine gum together, and marking progress on a calendar. As a united front, the journey became easier. His dad’s consumption decreased, and each milestone, big or small, strengthened their shared resolve. It was no longer just about quitting smoking, but about facing difficulties together as a family.
