(2025高二上·宁夏·学业考试)Huang Danian was born in Nanning, Guangxi, in 1958. As a boy, he showed an unusual gift in science. At 11, he made a sextant (六分仪) by himself, which could measure things very accurately. In 1982, when graduating from college, he wrote in his classmates’ albums: “It is our responsibility to make China strong again.” This promise guided his whole life.
In 1992, Huang went to the UK for further study with government support. He became a top scientist in geophysics, enjoying a good salary and a comfortable life in a big house. However, he never forgot his motherland or his youthful promise.
In 2009, learning that China urgently needed deep-earth exploration technology, he gave up his comfortable life abroad and returned without hesitation. At Jilin University, he worked tirelessly with his team. Facing foreign technological blockades (封锁), he visited many research institutes, moved into his office, and often traveled for work over 160 days a year. Once, he passed out on a plane but still held his computer tightly, showing his great devotion.
Through years of effort, Huang led his team to achieve remarkable breakthroughs. They developed the “Crust-1” drill, able to reach 10,000 meters underground, making China one of the top three countries in deep drilling. They also mastered airborne gravity gradiometer technology, making China the second country to possess it. In only 5 years, they completed research that usually took two decades, filling key gaps in space, deep-earth, and undersea exploration.
In 2016, Huang was diagnosed with liver cancer. The night before surgery, he was still writing recommendation letters for his students. On January 8, 2017, he passed away at the age of 58. People honored him as “Hardworking Huang,” who devoted his last seven years to China’s progress. In 2024, he was awarded the national title “People’s Educator.” His spirit continues to inspire future generations and light the way for China’s scientific development.
