Dan Mancina has been a skateboarder since the age of seven, but when he was 13, he was diagnosed (诊断) with rhinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease that made him almost completely blind by 22. He hit stop on his skateboarding for years in his early 20s, but later on, he picked it back up again. Now almost 38, he’s a professional skateboarder, relearning tricks, and even completing the course at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Although he’s learned to find his way while skating he wants a better experience for fellow blind skaters. Actually, about seven years ago, he started dreaming of creating the world’s first adaptive skatepark right in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Finally, the park is a reality.
Called “The Ranch”, the 5,000-square-foot skatepark allows both experienced low-vision boarders and newcomers to the sport to feel welcome. “Traditionally, there are not as many opportunities for sports for the blind, so really it’s just giving that as an option,” said Mancina. “Not everybody wants to skate, but everyone should have at least the opportunity to try it.”
In a recent video, blind content creator Anthony S. Ferraro reviews and documents his experiences in the park. He shows off a 40-foot-long flat bar that is surrounded with enough room to set up, so skaters can feel their way through the course, with a ledge (台沿) to match, for hands or walking sticks to find stability. There’re also rollers and platforms, all designed to be easier for people with poor eyesight or in wheelchairs.
Next up, Mancina plans to host skate workshops and camps for other blind skaters who want to learn how to skate. When he plans his programming, Mancina said any disabled skaters can reach out to skate in the park, just like his friend Ferraro. “I’ve never had a place where I can skate with full confidence, not to mention a great environment to learn new stuff from Dan,” Ferraro ends his video. “Thanks for building this park; Dan, you’re a true pioneer.”
4. What can be inferred about Dan from paragraph 1?
A. His vision showed signs of recovery. B. Skateboarding caused his eye disease.
C. He was determined and ambitious. D. He was pressed to learn skateboarding.
5. Why did Dan build the skatepark?
A. To benefit blind skaters. B. To realize his dream of skating.
C. To popularize his hometown. D. To join in the Olympic Games.
6. What can we say about the skatepark?
A. It is environment-friendly. B. It is competition-focused.
C. It is beautifully designed. D. It prioritizes convenience.
7. What is implied by Ferraro’s closing words in the video?
A. He criticizes other parks. B. He thinks highly of Dan.
C. He doubts future expansions. D. He favors online programming.

As we enjoy the benefits of smart homes, we should be aware of several downsides. For example, our smart home devices often communicate with producers’ servers and third-party services. This data sharing can include details about our daily routines, preferences, and even our location. Companies might use these data for purposes. Moreover, when we link multiple devices to a single account, we create a detailed digital profile companies can analyze. So we, as consumers, should think about who can access this information and demand transparency (透明) from companies about data usage policies.
Our connected devices, from smart locks to security cameras, can be the target of cybercriminals (网络犯罪). Once they gain access, they might steal personal information. Besides, producers might prioritize convenience over security, leading to products with default passwords (默认密码) or outdated software. We have to keep our devices protected by changing default passwords and regularly updating software.
Investing in smart technology is expensive. Smart things like lighting systems, security cameras, and voice-activated assistants often come with a high price. Additionally, the ongoing maintenance and potential upgrades over time can further consume our budget. So we should plan carefully and prioritize which smart features matter most to us so that we can make informed decisions.
Our smart devices are designed to optimize energy use by turning off the electricity when not needed or adjusting settings based on occupancy. However, each device, no matter how efficient, requires power to operate. Moreover, continuous updates and connectivity to the cloud for smart devices can increase energy use. So check and adjust settings regularly to ensure our smart home systems operate efficiently.
As technology rapidly advances, producers release new models with enhanced features. While this might sound exciting, it means our current devices suddenly don’t receive updates anymore. This forces us to purchase replacements sooner than we’d like. Moreover, though we want our homes to run smoothly, devices might unexpectedly refuse to work and we end up waiting for replacements. Therefore, we must stay informed to ensure our smart homes truly enhance our lives safely and efficiently.
8. What is the problem regarding the use of smart home devices mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Privacy concerns. B. Limited digital information.
C. System maintenance. D. Dependency on companies.
9. Why does the author mention default passwords?
A. To praise producers’ thoughtfulness. B. To warn against weak security settings.
C. To show the perfection of the devices. D. To encourage frequent password reuse.
10. What can be concluded about smart-home upgrades?
A. They are generally free of charge. B. They reduce consumers’ total costs.
C. They extend device lifetime greatly. D. They may increase the energy bills.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Easy Life with Smart Things B. Ways to Manage Smart Devices
C. Hidden Costs of Smart Homes D. The Rise of Energy-saving Technologies
D
Humans are equally related to apes (猿类), common chimpanzees and bonobos (倭黑猩猩), sharing a common ancestor that lived around 7 million years ago. Scientists are particularly interested in how chimpanzees communicate with each other. Given that these are our closest relatives, research on chimpanzee communication can be a window into the development of human language.
While both species make sounds, the calls aren’t classified as true referential communication because they don’t appear to have unambiguous meanings. For example, the most easily recognized chimpanzee call, the “pant-hoot”, first fully described by Jane Goodall, a celebrated British ethologist, can mean various things in different contexts. It’s mostly just a way to get someone’s attention or express anger, threat, surprise, or delight. Context and facial expressions are needed to clarify the meaning.
We’ve long known that apes are capable of sign language, but the more interesting question is whether apes use gestural (手势的) communication naturally. In a study by Catherine Hobaiter, a primatologist of the University of St Andrews and Richard Byrne, a cognitive evolution theorist of the University of Stirling, UK, reported over 4,000 instances of body language and identified 66 specific chimpanzee gestures that are used regularly in the wild. Each of these had stable meanings in a given context and was understood by the receiver of the gesture.
Recently, Richard and her coworkers detected 68 clearly understood gestures in wild bonobos, and 66 in common chimpanzees. 60 of these gestures overlap (重叠) between the two. That 88% of the gestures overlap between chimpanzees and bonobos despite more than a million years of separate development is strong evidence for some form of biological-genetic (生物遗传的) basis for the gestures themselves, not just the ability to make them.
In fact, there are at least 24 known gestures that are used in all great apes, implying that the body language of hominids has roots that are at least 12 million years old. For this reason, many scientists see gestures as the original basis of human language.
12. What does the underlined word “unambiguous” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Complex. B. Clear. C. Special. D. Positive.
13. What does Catherine and Richard’s study reveal about ape gestures?
A. They vary greatly between species. B. They require facial expressions.
C. They communicate specific messages. D. They develop stably with age.
14. What does the gesture overlap between species suggest?
A. Genetic foundation. B. Shared habitats.
C. Cultural depth. D. Environmental adaptation.
15. Why did researchers study chimpanzee communication?
A. To protect endangered ape species. B. To develop animal training methods.
C. To compare different ape behaviors. D. To explore human language origins.

Being humans means having different sides, and we all have parts of ourselves that we’re aware of. But within us also lies the shadow — aspects we may have hidden and rejected. These parts are often the result of childhood experiences that teach us what’s acceptable. ____16____ Shadow work helps us bring them to light and become whole.
At its heart, shadow work is a way to lovingly explore the hidden parts of ourselves. It’s a psychological self-exploration process that encourages individuals to examine and integrate the unknown aspects of our personality, often referred to as our “shadow”. ____17____
For example, through facing the uncomfortable parts of ourselves we’ve ignored or rejected, we gain insights into our motivations and behaviors. The work allows us to make better choices. ____18____ And as we integrate these aspects, we may uncover strengths or creative gifts that were previously buried. This can allow us to have more courage, confidence, and live a more real and fulfilling life.
____19____ A simple way is to pay attention to when you may feel triggered (触发) in daily interactions. For example, while browsing social media, ask yourself what is behind what you’re feeling. Moreover, you can try viewing your traits with more pity and less judgment and start a journaling practice. ____20____ While writing in your journal, look out for patterns or themes that you feel strong emotions around or bring up feelings of discomfort. Bringing what’s hidden in the dark into the light can help live a freer, more peaceful and joyful life.
A. So, how do we learn to do shadow work?
B. Why can we be unaware of what’s hidden inside?
C. By doing this, you focus on your emotions and thoughts.
D. Yet they can also contain undeveloped gifts like creativity.
E Uncovering these parts can be of great benefit in many ways.
F. Discover and accept all your parts for greater self-acceptance.
G. Meanwhile, it reduces feelings of anxiety tied to past experiences.

In late August, I opened an e-mail from my favorite author, Jon Acuff, which read September was the right time to develop a new habit. His e-mail included an attached calendar for the month. He encouraged readers to print one out, choose a new habit and then color in a square for each day they followed through on their intentions.
It sounded like a great idea to me. I thought about the habits I’d like to adopt in my own life — walking five miles every day; drinking a gallon (加仑) of water daily; spending an hour each day organizing areas of my home I usually ignore; writing 2,000 words every day and doing something special for a family member each day. Thinking these habits were important, I didn’t choose but printed out five calendars.
Early on September 1st, I filled my bottle with water and set off on my five-mile walk. About a mile in, I rushed back home to use the bathroom. I’d planned to go back out to finish my walk, but my son, Nathan, was up earlier than usual and needed my help with his learning. Two hours later, when his e-learning was eventually done, I went upstairs to work on reorganizing my closet (衣柜). I cleaned for two hours but didn’t get as much done as I would’ve liked. At 2:00 pm, I sat down at the computer and worked on a story. I’d written only 500 words when I realized it was time to drive Nathan to his tennis practice.
An hour later, I was back home and started preparing dinner. At 7:00 p.m., I was finally able to color in the first of my calendar squares for the day. After dinner, I returned to the computer and wrote another 500 words. Then it was time to read to Nathan before bed. As I read to him, I realized I was tired. But because I’m stubborn (固执的), I choked down the rest of the water, and I felt terrible. My husband saw and asked, “Honey, what’s wrong with you?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I explained the September habits to him.

【答案】One possible version:
I explained the September habits to him. He listened patiently and asked, “Did Jon Acuff tell you to print out five calendars and adopt five new habits all in the same month?” “Umm, no. I think he intends for people to just do one, but I think if one is good, then five is better, right?” I replied. My husband shook his head, saying, “You’re trying to climb five mountains at once. It’s no wonder that you’re exhausted.” He then suggested, “Why not pick one habit to focus on?”
I followed his suggestion and decided to focus on one habit at a time. The one I chose was “Reading to Nathan nightly”. From that day on, instead of rushing through a story, I let him pick two books. By the end of September, that single calendar bloomed with color — not from force, but from joy. Jon Acuff’s challenge had worked, just not the way I’d expected. September taught me that developing good habits isn’t about doing everything at once, but about doing one thing consistently.
