What would you do if your best friend and you disagree with each other? Karina is my best friend. When we first met in a camp, we both felt that we’d be friends forever. So it was hard to imagine that I would disagree with her on some things. Whatever we did, we were always together. And the more we spent together, the more we found we were surprisingly like each other.
But then something happened in another summer camp. One day, Karina, Linda, Tyler and I talked happily under a tree. “Have you heard about the shopping-mall news?” asked Linda, “They want to cut down some trees to make the shopping center.”
“That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.”
“I don’t think so,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really need work.”
“But think of all the birds that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
“Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important?” Karina asked.
“Maybe two people with opposite ideas just aren’t meant to be friends,” I was thinking. I felt so mad that I even turned my head away from her, not wanting to talk anymore.
Just then, Linda jumped up and broke the silence. “Let’s see who can do the roundhouse (回旋) kick!” Tyler did first, Karina followed, and I finally joined them. Soon, we all laughed and enjoyed ourselves.
After that day, even though I wished Karina could agree with me about saving the trees, I began to realize that even best friends disagree sometimes. What’s important is that we should respect (尊重) each other.

B. Karina agreed with the writer.
C. Linda accepted Karina’s opinion.

Do you have a smartphone? How many hours do you spend on your smartphone every day? It’s very useful—we can use it to take photos, play games or study. But it can also cause (造成) problems. A large number of people spend over 4 hours a day using their phones—that’s 1,460 hours a year, from a study by Thames. So, if we use smartphones too much, they can become harmful (有害的).
Using smartphones too much can be bad for students’ study. What about sleep? Many studies suggest that long smartphone time is bad for students’ sleep, too. It can make it hard to fall asleep and even harder to wake up in the morning.
To figure out (弄清楚) if using smartphones too much causes poor sleep, scientists asked 1,043 British students aged between 18 and 30 to finish two questionnaires (问卷). And they learned that using smartphones too much brings people poor sleep. Almost 70% of the students who use smartphones too much have poor sleep.
If you have a smartphone, it’s a good idea to put down your phone before you go to sleep. Try spending less time on smartphones, and see what happens.
31. How does the writer start this article (文章)?

Dear Lily,
How is everything? I am happy that you are interested in Chinese traditional festivals. I’d like to introduce the Spring Festival to you. It falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, usually in January or February. During this festival, families gather to make dumplings and have a reunion dinner. People also set off fireworks and children receive red envelopes with lucky money. This festival brings joy and strengthens family bonds. I think it is wonderful because it fills our hearts with happiness and love, and it also carries our best wishes for a new and better life.
Hope you can come to China soon!
