The Most Walkable Cities in the World
There’s nothing like walking in a city, absorbing the local culture and finding hidden treasures. Insider Monkey, an investing website, has made a list of the most walkable cities in 2024. Here are the top four cities where you can enjoy the best walking experiences.
Florence, Italy
Florence tops the list as the most walkable city globally. Famous for its Renaissance history and amazing architecture, its major landmarks — including the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore — are all within easy walking distance. Besides, Florence values cleanliness, seen in its well-kept piazzas and the banks of the Arno River.
Riga, Latvia
This medieval Baltic capital is a wonderful place for pedestrians. Its popular attractions like Riga Cathedral, Riga Central Market and the House of Black Heads are all within 1.5 miles. The pedestrian-only Old Town and Vecrīga, a UNESCO-listed neighborhood and Riga’s historical center, are highly recommended.
Hamburg, Germany
Hamburg’s maritime atmosphere and cultural spots, such as Hamburg Dungeon and Miniatur Wunderland, are within two miles. The city’s efficient public transport and beautiful scenic sites also add to its high walkability.
Porto, Portugal
Porto is known for narrow cobblestone streets ideal for exploring. Its famous landmarks like Dom Luís I Bridge and Livraria Lello are easy to reach on foot. Clean streets, well-maintained parks and good air quality (thanks to its coastal location) make it more walkable.
1. Which of the following is a major landmark of Florence?
A. Miniatur Wunderland. B. Uffizi Gallery.
C. Dom Luis I Bridge. D. Riga Central Market.
2. What is special about Vecrīga?
A. It is a coastal area with good air quality.
B. It is a modern commercial center of Riga.
C. It is the largest pedestrian-only zone in Riga.
D. It is a UNESCO-listed historical neighborhood.
3. What is the key factor that makes the four cities highly walkable?
A. Their public transport is more efficient.
B. They all have a long Renaissance history.
C. All of them are famous for coastal scenery.
D. The major attractions are within reach on foot.

As a surgeon, I’d reviewed hundreds of CT scans for colleagues, often writing down “Widely spreading disease-no role for surgery” on charts and moving on. But when I stared at my own scan-masses clouding the lungs and bending the spine (脊椎), a clear sign of cancer — I froze. At 36, I’d spent years guiding patients through gloomy expectations: with elderly, seriously ill patients, it felt manageable, but facing cancer myself, I ached for the clearness I’d once denied others.
I’d long followed two rules with patients: be honest about the outcome of the disease but leave room for hope, and use vague yet accurate timelines like “weeks to a few months” instead of detailed statistics. We avoided using numbers, knowing patients often misinterpret them — after all, “70% survival” sounds better than “30% death” even if they’re the same. Yet when I sat with my cancer doctor, I begged for survival data, certain that my medical background let me handle it. She refused firmly: “Find what matters most to you.”
I turned to research. Studies said 70-80% of lung cancer patients died within two years, but most were older smokers — I was 36 and never smoked. Friends shared stories of “miracle survivors” who’d lived a decade with the same cancer; I ignored them at first, but they got into my thoughts. Then a targeted pill, designed for my cancer’s genetic change, turned things around: I stopped using a walking stick, and hope started.
Death’s certainty had once felt easier than uncertainty. Should I plan a funeral, write the book I’d dreamed of, or go back to work? I felt lost until Samuel Beckett’s words rang: “I can’t go on. I’ll go on.”
Eight months later, my strength is back, and the cancer is getting better. I’ve returned to work, revisiting old written works and enjoying small moments. Every morning at 5:30, I wake next to my wife, thinking “I can’t go on.”— then I put on my work clothes and head to the operating room, finishing the thought: “I’ll go on.” I now know the worry of death can’t be fixed with numbers; what matters is living fully, not counting days.
4. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. The author accepted his cancer calmly.
B. Most patients prefer unclear timelines.
C. The author struggled more as a patient.
D. Doctors often use white lies to give hope.
5. How did the author feel about “miracle survivors” stories at first?
A. Doubtful. B. Shocked. C. Hopeful. D. Comforted.
6. Why does the author mention Samuel Beckett’s words?
A. To express his sense of despair. B. To stress his decision to persevere.
C. To question his treatment plan. D. To explain his feeling of confusion.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Rethinking My Precious Time B. What Matters in Miracle Survivors?
C. Living Fully, Not Counting Days D. How Much Time Do I Have Left?
C
Over the past few decades, firefly populations have been declining due to factors like light pollution, pesticides, and habitat loss. Now there’s a ray of hope: A recent study suggests there’s reason to be optimistic for these vulnerable insects. They’re more prevalent this summer than they have been in years.
According to Popular Science, residents across the U.S. have been seeing a jump in firefly numbers in recent weeks. There have even been increases in urban areas, such as New York City and Washington, D.C.
While firefly numbers still aren’t what they used to be, the change signals a positive outlook for the insects. The increased numbers of the glowing bugs in many states could be linked to the factors below: Climate plays a significant part in firefly reproduction, as they tend to seek out wet soil to lay their eggs. Many states saw decent rainfall this year, which could have led to the insects’ population growth. Besides, firefly larvae (幼虫) live for about two years before pupating (化蛹) and becoming the glowing creatures we’re familiar with. When the insects emerge from their pupal stage to find mates, they will live for a few weeks, depending on the environment and species. Firefly prevalence can vary by year because of this factor, and some places may be simply experiencing good timing this summer.
Fireflies aren’t just visually pleasing-they also help the environment. A 2019 report from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation highlighted the ecological benefits of fireflies. The larvae of the species primarily feed on snails and slugs, both of which damage plants. These insects also contribute to the diets of many creatures in the animal kingdom, especially various spider species. Environment America also shares that some species feed on pollen and nectar (花蜜), benefiting many flowering plants.
We may be lucky enough to enjoy their twinkling light shows for years to come if we make an effort to take care of them. We can help fireflies out by doing simple things, such as turning off lights at night so as not to confuse the insects, and weeding the yard less frequently. It also won’t hurt to avoid using pesticides outside and share our awareness about the lovely creatures.
8. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Widespread. B. Rare. C. Endangered. D. Colorful.
9. What are the reasons for the rise in firefly numbers this summer?
A. Wet soil and long larval stage.
B. Enough rain and proper lifecycle.
C. Mild climate and less light pollution.
D More pesticides and frequent mowing.
10. What environmental value do fireflies have?
A. They feed on spiders and plants. B. They control pest populations.
C. They offer beautiful light displays. D. They keep ecological stability.
11. Which of the following is the best way to protect firefly?
A. Keep our yard dry and tidy.
B. Turn on lights to attract them.
C. Make small conscious daily adjustments.
D. Conduct systematic protection projects.
D
Few things delight children, or upset their minders, as much as screen time. Parents demand kids to put down their digital devices and pick up a book or a football. Academics worry that phones and social media are creating an “anxious generation” of indoorsy people.
Yet the worry may be focused on the wrong age group. For all the fears around teens and screens, the most square-eyed generation is seniors. They have long been champion TV-viewers. Now a new generation of pensioners (领养老金者) are adding to their screen time with smartphones and iPads. The result is long screen sessions, which take up more than half of pensioners’ waking hours.
The digitisation of seniors brings notable benefits. They have perhaps more to gain from smart devices than any other age group. Facebook and WhatsApp bring daily updates from old friends and faraway grandchildren. Zoom transports church, book clubs and doctors’ appointments into the home for people who cannot attend in person. A connected retirement is more fulfilling and fun than an offline one.
However, online retirement comes with social costs. Unlike teens’ devices, seniors’ devices are often linked to credit cards, making them targets for predators (猎手) who now operate digitally. Door-to-door cheaters, who have long preyed on seniors, can now go iPad-to-iPad. Governments rightly strive to protect children from online predators. They must recognize that there is another, fast-growing vulnerable group to look after.
A second cost is misinformation. Pensioners are twice as likely as under-25s to use news apps or websites. They also seem more likely to fall for online misinformation than others. As pensioners shift from spending their time in front of Fox or the BBC to spending it on YouTube or TikTok, they are entering a Wild West of information.
Pensioners’ rocketing screen time should at least make for a more measured debate on digital matters. Generations do not always understand each other well. There is a long history of policymakers calling for bans on youth crazes, from rock ‘n’ roll to violent video games. When the craze catches on more widely, the panic tends to die down. Universal use of smartphones and social media should make it easier to have sensible conversations about their trade-offs. And when children are told to get off their phones, they can cast a meaningful glance at grandpa in the corner, laughing at the latest emoji on WhatsApp.
12. Who spends the most time on screen according to the text?
A. The elderly. B. Children. C. Academics. D. Teenagers.
13. What can we learn about seniors from Paragraph 4?
A. They use online credit cards securely.
B. They resist cheaters better than teens.
C. They face financial risks via digital devices.
D. They use iPads mainly for daily chats.
14. Why are pensioners easier to be tricked by online misinformation?
A. They share misinformation on social media.
B. They seldom watch traditional news now.
C. They use news apps more than youngsters.
D. They fail to distinguish reliable information.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Policymakers should ban seniors’ excessive screen time.
B. More senior screen time calls for careful digital talks.
C. Digital use helps reduce generation misunderstandings.
D. Generation gaps arise from different digital tool beliefs.

I was visiting my sister and watched as my fifteen-year-old nephew, Ben, emptied the trash without being asked. “You’re such a great kid,” I told him. “Thank you for doing that.” He smiled. “The trash is my job. I’m ATT around here.” At my confused look, my sister Mandy explained that ATT stood for All Things Trash-a simple rule to solve their chore arguments.
A few days later, back home with my own family, I was stressed about a work project deadline. When my kids kept asking me to warm up dinner, I exploded: “I’m tired of being ATF — All Things Food! Planning, shopping, cooking, cleaning-it’s all on me! I don’t want to yell at you guys again, but I’m overwhelmed right now, and I definitely could use some help.”
My eighteen-year-old daughter, Julia nodded and apologized. “We understand, Mom. When’s your deadline?” “In two days, and I don’t know how I’m going to finish.” Tears threatened as I thought about how much work I still had to do. Julia looked at her brothers, Jordan and Nathan. “For the next two days, the three of us are ATF. Let’s leave Mom alone and go make a plan.” My kids all agreed and offered to help. For the next two days, they took over “ATF duties”: Julia did the grocery shopping, Nathan brought me meals while I worked, and Jordan helped with cleanup. We finally agreed on a new plan: Julia would handle shopping, the boys would do dishes, and take charge of cooking.
The next day, when Julia came home from her job at a local grocery store, she was carrying multiple bags of food. Her brothers helped her carry in several more from her car. In the past, I’d often texted her to bring home an item or two, but this was the first time she’d ever done our full shopping.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
An hour later, I tiptoed into the kitchen.

C 5. A 6. B 7. C

根据第一段“But when I stared at my own scan-masses clouding the lungs and bending the spine (脊椎), a clear sign of cancer — I froze. At 36, I’d spent years guiding patients through gloomy expectations: with elderly, seriously ill patients, it felt manageable, but facing cancer myself, I ached for the clearness I’d once denied others.(但当我凝视自己的扫描报告时——肺部布满阴影,脊椎弯曲变形(这是癌症的明显迹象)——我呆住了。
根据第三段“Friends shared stories of “miracle survivors” who’d lived a decade with the same cancer; I ignored them at first, but they got into my thoughts.(朋友们分享了“奇迹幸存者”的故事,他们与患同种癌症的我一样,却活了十年;起初我对此置之不理,但这些故事逐渐萦绕在我心头)”可推知,作者最初对“奇迹幸存者”的故事感到怀疑,故选A。
根据倒数第二段“I felt lost until Samuel Beckett’s words rang: “I can’t go on. I’ll go on.”(我感到迷茫,直到塞缪尔·贝克特的话在我耳边响起:“我无法继续前行。我仍将前行。”)”和最后一段“Every morning at 5:30, I wake next to my wife, thinking “I can’t go on.”— then I put on my work clothes and head to the operating room, finishing the thought: “I’ll go on.” I now know the worry of death can’t be fixed with numbers; what matters is living fully, not counting days.(每天清晨5点半,我躺在妻子身旁醒来,心中默念“我无法继续前行”——然后穿上工作服,走向手术室,完成那未尽之语:“我仍将前行。”如今我明白,对死亡的担忧无法用数字化解;重要的是活得充实,而非计算天数)”可推知,作者提到Samuel Beckett的话是为了强调他坚持不懈的决心。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Eight months later, my strength is back, and the cancer is getting better. I’ve returned to work, revisiting old written works and enjoying small moments. Every morning at 5:30, I wake next to my wife, thinking “I can’t go on.”— then I put on my work clothes and head to the operating room, finishing the thought: “I’ll go on.” I now know the worry of death can’t be fixed with numbers; what matters is living fully, not counting days.(八个月后,我的体力恢复了,癌症也在好转。

D. More pesticides and frequent mowing.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第一段中的“They’re more prevalent this summer than they have been in years.(今年夏天它们比往年更prevalent。)”及第二段“residents across the U.S. have been seeing a jump in firefly numbers(美国各地居民都看到萤火虫数量激增)”可知,“prevalent”与“数量激增、随处可见”呼应,意为“普遍的、广泛的”。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“Climate plays a significant part in firefly reproduction, as they tend to seek out wet soil to lay their eggs. Many states saw decent rainfall this year, which could have led to the insects’ population growth. Besides, firefly larvae live for about two years before pupating and becoming the glowing creatures we’re familiar with. When the insects emerge from their pupal stage to find mates, they will live for a few weeks, depending on the environment and species. Firefly prevalence can vary by year because of this factor, and some places may be simply experiencing good timing this summer.(气候对萤火虫的繁殖起着至关重要的作用,因为这类昆虫倾向于寻找湿润的土壤来产卵。
根据第四段中的“Fireflies aren’t just visually pleasing-they also help the environment. Environment America also shares that some species feed on pollen and nectar, benefiting many flowering plants.(萤火虫不仅具有观赏价值,还能对生态环境起到积极作用。
根据第五段中“We can help fireflies out by doing simple things, such as turning off lights at night so as not to confuse the insects, and weeding the yard less frequently. It also won’t hurt to avoid using pesticides outside and share our awareness about the lovely creatures.(我们可以通过一些简单的举动来帮助萤火虫生存,比如夜间关灯,避免对这类昆虫造成干扰,同时减少庭院除草的频率。此外,避免在户外使用杀虫剂,以及向他人宣传保护这些可爱小生灵的意识,也会对它们大有裨益。)”可知,保护萤火虫的最佳方式是日常有意识地做些小调整。故选C项。
D Generation gaps arise from different digital tool beliefs.
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

Thank you!
Dear teachers and classmates,
Good morning! Today I’m honored to share my views on “The Power of Writing”. Writing, more than a language skill, serves as a tool to refine critical thinking and organize ideas, laying a solid foundation for both exams and future communication.
My progress stems from small daily habits. Firstly, I copy excellent expressions to expand my vocabulary. Then, I rewrite model essays to imitate their logical structures, which I further polish by discussing draft ideas with peers. Most importantly, I dig deeper by linking ordinary daily moments to broader themes, a practice that deepens both my writing and thinking.
Writing is a journey of accumulation. Let’s stick to practicing, and we’ll surely feel its magic as our English improves.
Thank you!

An hour later, I tiptoed into the kitchen. An hour later, I tiptoed into the kitchen. I witnessed a well-coordinated scene: Julia prepared salad cautiously, while Jordan was carefully washing dishes. Nathan was attentively checking a pot of soup on the stove. They worked efficiently, chatting softly about the meal, unaware of me. My heart filled with pride and love. Just then, Julia looked up and smiled. “Mom! Perfect timing. Dinner’s ready — try Nathan’s soup.” I sat, and the warm soup eased my exhaustion. Jordan added, “ATF isn’t so bad when we share the work.” Their understanding and initiative recharged me, giving strength for my project.
The relaxing dinner that night inspired a regular ATF rule in our family. We officially agreed that Julia would manage the grocery list and shopping. The boys accepted their roles: Jordan would clean up after meals, and Nathan would assist with simple cooking. This system greatly reduced my daily pressure. More importantly, it taught everyone the value of sharing household responsibilities and working as a team. Our home became more peaceful and cooperative. Now, for us, those three letters, ATF, represent more than just chores; they remind us of that special evening and the warmth of my children’s wonderful initiative and support.
