As a teenager, I fell in love with foreign languages — first French, then Italian, then Hindi, and Chinese. The learning has often left me highly frustrated, but has also given me great joy at the fact of having understood some of the beauty of those wonderful, magical tongues.
Why did I learn all those languages? Out of love for different sound systems, different writing systems, different grammars, different idioms, different ways of seeing the world. I also loved repeatedly listening to songs from other lands and feeling the culture and history silently lying in the words and tunes.
My earliest-learnt language was French, and then Italian. My French is very good. Although my Italian is not as good, it gives me a huge burst of pride whenever I’m taken for a native speaker.
Chinese is another kettle of fish. I’ve struggled with it for many years, yet I’m almost always lost in a group of native speakers. It’s discouraging, but I still want to try to climb the Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) of the Chinese language on my own. I don’t want a helicopter (直升机) ride to the summit. Learning another language is one of the deepest and most human things one can possibly do. Language is at the core of who we are. Language makes us who we are.
Today, AI can impressively help anyone to write and read in almost any language. But this is a surface-level exchange of ideas, which comes at a steep price: the loss of honest engagement (参与) with the magic organ that makes us human. The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so important to do so in the AI era.
Chinese is difficult for me, but I will never allow AI to borrow my voice to express my thoughts aloud in a perfect Chinese accent.
24. What do we know about the author’s learning of foreign languages?
A. It is always a pleasant experience. B. It is easiest for her to learn Hindi.
C. She started learning them at the age of 8. D. She really loves them and their cultures.
25. Why does the author compare Chinese to “Everest”?
A. To show it is full of natural beauty.
B. To suggest it is extremely challenging.
C. To show it is the most important language.
D. To prove it is popular among language learners.
26. Why is learning a new language still important in the AI era?
A. Because AI cannot translate languages clearly enough.
B. Because it allows us to avoid the challenges of modern life.
C. Because the process itself keeps us truly engaged as humans.
D. Because it helps us get better grades in school examinations.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To recommend AI tools for language study.
B. To share personal views on learning languages.
C. To compare the difficulties of French, Italian and Chinese.
D. To prove that Chinese is the hardest language in the world.
D 25. B 26. C 27. B

I also loved repeatedly listening to songs from other lands and feeling the culture and history silently lying in the words and tunes.
根据第四段中“Chinese is another kettle of fish. I’ve struggled with it for many years, yet I’m almost always lost in a group of native speakers. It’s discouraging, but I still want to try to climb the Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) of the Chinese language on my own. (中文则完全是另一回事。我已经为此挣扎了许多年,但在母语者群体中,我几乎总是迷失方向。这很令人沮丧,但我仍然想尝试独自攀登中文这座“珠穆朗玛峰”)”可知,汉语令作者沮丧,作者将汉语比作“珠穆朗玛峰”是为了表明它极具挑战性。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Today, AI can impressively help anyone to write and read in almost any language. But this is a surface-level exchange of ideas, which comes at a steep price: the loss of honest engagement (参与) with the magic organ that makes us human. The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so important to do so in the AI era.
通读全文,结合第一段“The learning has often left me highly frustrated, but has also given me great joy at the fact of having understood some of the beauty of those wonderful, magical tongues. (学习一门新语言的挑战正是为什么在AI时代它仍然如此重要的原因)”可知,文章以作者个人学习多种外语的经历和感悟为主线,旨在分享个人对学习语言的看法。
C
American workers have cut the number of hours they spend in their jobs since 2019, but no group has cut down its time on the clock more than young, high-earning men whose jobs typically demand long hours.
The top-earning 10% of men in the U.S. labor market worked 77 fewer work hours in 2022, on average, than those in the same earnings group in 2019, according to a new study of federal data by the economics department at Washington University in St. Louis. Over the same three-year period, the top-earning 10% of women cut back time at work by 29 hours.
High-earning men in the 25-to-39 range who could be described as “workaholics” were pulling back, often by choice, says Yongseok Shin, a professor who co-wrote the paper.
“These are the people who have that bargaining power (议价能力),” Dr. Shin says. Many workers have had the power over their employers in a tight job market. “They have the advantage to decide how many hours they want to work without worrying too much about their life.”
Before the pandemic (疫情), Eli Albrecht, a lawyer in the Washington, D.C., area, says he worked 80 to 90 hours a week. Now, he says he puts in 60 to 70 hours each week, sharing Zoom school (上网课) duties for two of his young children with his wife. He says he enjoys family time.
As high-earning workers in the U.S. cut back, low-wage workers increased their hours, according to Dr. Shin’s research. The bottom-earning 10% of working men worked 41 hours more in 2022, on average, than in 2019. Women in the lowest-earning group lifted their hours worked 52 hours more last year compared with 2019.
28. What do we know about the top-earning 10% of men?
A. They worked 77 hours each week in 2022.
B. They increased their working hours in 2019.
C. They enjoy being workaholics at present.
D. They have cut down more working hours.
29. Why can high-earning people reduce their working time according to Shin?
A. They worry about their life. B. They have to attend school.
C. They like bargaining with people. D. They have the ability to bargain.
30. What do we know about Eli Albrecht?
A. He is crazy about work. B. He lives in New York.
C. He cares about his family. D. He works longer than before.
31. Which group of people have to increase their working hours?
A. The lowest-earning group. B. The top-earning women.
C. All the lawyers and doctors. D. All men with young children.
D 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段“American workers have cut the number of hours they spend in their jobs since 2019, but no group has cut down its time on the clock more than young, high-earning men whose jobs typically demand long hours. (自2019年以来,美国工人减少了他们的工作时长,但没有哪个群体比年轻、高收入男性减少的时间更多,他们的工作通常需要长时间工作。)”以及第二段“The top-earning 10% of men in the U.S. labor market worked 77 fewer work hours in 2022, on average, than those in the same earnings group in 2019, according to a new study of federal data by the economics department at Washington University in St. Louis. (圣路易斯华盛顿大学经济系对联邦数据的一项新研究显示,2022年,美国劳动力市场收入最高的10%的男性平均比2019年同一收入群体的男性少工作77小时)”可知,收入最高的10%男性群体减少的工作时间最多。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““These are the people who have that bargaining power (议价能力),” Dr. Shin says. Many workers have had the power over their employers in a tight job market. “They have the advantage to decide how many hours they want to work without worrying too much about their life.”(“这些人有议价能力,”Shin博士说。在就业市场紧张的情况下,许多工人对雇主拥有控制权。“他们有权决定自己想工作多少小时,而不用太担心自己的生活。”)”可知,Shin博士认为高收入者能够减少工作时间是因为他们拥有议价能力。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Now, he says he puts in 60 to 70 hours each week, sharing Zoom school (上网课) duties for two of his young children with his wife. He says he enjoys family time. (现在,他说他每周工作60到70小时,与妻子分担两个年幼孩子的上网课任务。他说他享受家庭时光。)”可知,Eli Albrecht关心家庭。
【31题详解】

The bottom-earning 10% of working men worked 41 hours more in 2022, on average, than in 2019.
D
Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
32. What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Protected. C. Used. D. Abandoned.
33. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B. E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C. Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D. Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
34. How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A. By providing data. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing examples. D. By offering a definition.
35. What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Solutions to destroying e-waste. B. Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C. Applications of recycled materials. D. Investments in restoring ecosystems.
D 33. B 34. C 35. B
根据第一段“This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. (这包括被discarded的电气或电子设备。但它们都去哪儿了呢?仅在美国,每年就有1亿部手机、4100万台电脑和2000多万台电视机被扔进垃圾填埋场)”可知,每年都有大量的电气或电子设备被扔进垃圾填埋场,这些设备都是被丢弃的,所以discarded意思是“丢弃”,与“Abandoned”意思相近。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modem devices.
根据第三段“In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
根据最后一段“It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production.
