One never knows what one is going to find
when one steps out into the world.Even
something as simple as a walk through your
neighborhood can result in either mild
excitement or unusual adventure if the cards
are right.
On a sunny afternoon,Mike journeyed into
the construction site near his home.Suddenly,
he heard something coming from around the
side of a nearby building. It sounded like the
whining(哀鸣)cries of an animal.He curiously
turned the corner, only to see a small dog
standing on its back legs and wagging its tail
pitifully. He then noticed that the poor thing
seemed to be stuck at the waist between a small
concrete wall and an even smaller broken
wooden fence.
The poor animal's difficult situation was
pretty obvious and Mike knew that if he did
nothing and left the dog there,it might not
survive. He had no idea how long the animal
had been there up until that point. It might not
have eaten or drunk anything in days.
Determined to help,he looked around to find a
stick, proceeded to climb up onto the cement
slab and pointed his stick back at the clog.He
was trying to pry(撬s动)above the animal by
inserting the stick between the cement wall and
the smaller,broken wall,but the terrified
animal obviously didn't know his intention and
attempted to bite at the tool and barked at him

fearfully. The fright in its eyes said everything.
After at least a minute or so of trying to
free the dog,Mike found his plan much more
difficult in practice than it had stayed inside his
own head. The hot sun was beating down.
Drops of sweat running down his face,Mike sat
down on the ground and scratched his head
with annoyance, thinking about what in the
world his next move was going to be.Beside
him,the dog curled up into a ball,whining
miserably.

Then Mike went around to the other side
of the wall and grabbed hold of the stick.
Eventually,with the few well-positioned
pieces of wood,Mike managed to insert his
stick in the right way.

It was a cool evening in spring.I was just
finishing the dinner dishes when the phone
rang.It was unusual because our landline
seldom rang.Nearly everyone we knew
contacted us on our cellphones.
“This is Janet Rhodes,”said a familiar
voice that I struggled to place. That name
seemed familiar, too.I knew a lot of people,
having lived on two coasts and in most major
cities in California for the past thirty years.
"I am calling because I need to apologize to
you,"Janet stated.That's when I suddenly
realized who she was.
"That day when I came into your
classroom and blamed you for disciplining my
daughter,I was way out of line.I know now
that you were doing what was best for her.You
were right..”
Twenty years earlier,it was only my
second year of teaching.Janet's daughter,
Stephanie, had acted out toward some of the
other girls in the classroom, and I had made her
stay in from breaks between classes.I was kind
and fair when I punished her.The truth was
that I really liked Stephanie, but she clearly
didn't like being disciplined. She told her
mother, and Janet felt the need to defend her
child.
After school, she flew into my classroom
and accused me of everything from being unfair
to playing favorites to not caring about my
students. She was yelling so loudly that every
teacher in the building heard her accusations,
including my principal.
Her words shocked me because none of
her criticisms was true.I managed to keep from
crying while she stood in front of me,but as
soon as she left the room,I broke down.I cried
all evening on and off through that sleepless
night.I had once felt such joy teaching my
kids,but now I felt like I was under a
microscope in my classroom. For the next few
weeks, her words caused me to second-guess
everything I did with my students.I doubted
my ability and even my own heart.Despite how
her mother had treated me,I knew I would
discipline Stephanie again if she acted out.It
was the right thing to do.

And now,two decades later,the angry
mother was apologizing to me.
"Can you find it in your heart to forgive
me?"Janet asked finally.

After a very long wait,Mother and I were
relieved to see our dog delivered 6 puppies!
The sixth was the smallest and black and
white..I named her“Precious'”.I picked her up
and laid her on top of the large pile of puppies,
who were trying to suckle(吃奶).Mother dog
immediately pushed Precious away from the
rest of the group. She refused to recognize
Precious as a member of her family.
“Something's wrong,”said Mother.
I reached over and picked up Precious. My
heart sank when I saw the little puppy had a
cleft lip(唇裂)and could not close her little
mouth.Precious would die because she could
not suckle.
I purchased a syringe(注射器)and fed
Precious by holding it.I did this every day and
night, for more than ten days. The little puppy
survived and learned to eat on her own as long
as it was soft food.
Vacation was over and my new school life
would begin. So I placed an ad for the puppies
on the Internet.Within several days, all had
been picked up by their new families, except
Precious.I decided to keep her and give her an
operation if my parents saved enough money.
That night at around seven thirty,Mother
and I were eating supper when we heard a
knock on the front door. When I opened the
door, there was a lady with her son standing
behind. After knowing the purpose of their
coming,I explained to them there were no
puppies left.
Just at that moment,Precious left in the
bedroom began to bark.
“My puppy!My puppy!”yelled the little
boy as he ran out from behind his mother.
I just about fell over when I saw that the
small child also had a cleft lip.
The boy ran past me as fast as he could,
down the hall to where the puppy was still
barking.Holding the puppy in his arms,he
looked up at his mother and said,"Look,
Mummy. They found homes for all the puppies
except the pretty one,and it looks just
like me!”

The boy bent there pressing his cheek

I received an urgent call from my aunt.
"Turn on the TV.Granny's on the Channel 10
news.It turned out that Granny had made a
sandwich run for her office and was stopped at
a red light downtown. She had the window
rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man
rushed up to the driver's side window,
intending to carjack(劫车)her.
Now,what the would-be carjacker couldn't
have known was that this woman simply wasn't
“a granny'”.This was Nancy Johnson--the
same woman who owned and lived on a Texas
cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug
her own post holes to lay fence. The week
before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped
off its head with a shovel. She was the proud
owner of the new minivan(小型货车)she was
driving. In other words, she was not your
normal kind of granny.
The carjacker leaned into the open
window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and
said,"Get out of this car.I have a gun,and I
will shoot you."A statement like that would
have terrified anyone else.Instead,Granny saw
it as a challenge."If you really had a gun in
your pocket, you would have pulled it out and
led with that first,"she shouted at him,
apparently unworried.
She was right.The carjacker didn't have a
gun.He instead reached into the window,
grabbed her,and tried to pull her out of the
van.He pulled open the door, wildly catching
Granny's arms.Granny leaned her shoulder
inside to press the horn(喇叭)and started
yelling to make people around notice what was
happening. With the door now open, she held
tight the steering wheel with one arm and
started kicking the man anywhere her foot
could make contact. This tall woman had quite
a reach.

During this past year,I've had three
instances of car trouble. Each time these things
happened,I was sick of the way most people
hadn't bothered to help.One of those times,I
was on the side of the road for close to three
hours with my big Jeep.I put signs in the
windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK
(千斤J顶),and offered money.Nothing.Right
as I was about to give up,a Mexican family in a
small truck pulled over, and the father bounded
out.
He sized up the situation and called for his
daughter,who spoke English.He conveyed
through her that he had a jack but that it was
too small for the Jeep,so we would need
something to support it.Then he got a saw
from the truck and cut a section out of a
big log on the side of the road.We rolled it over
and put his jack on top,and we were in
business.
I started taking the wheel off,and then,if
you can believe it,I broke his tire iron.No
worries:He handed it to his wife, and she was
gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire
iron.She was back in 15 minutes.We finished
the job,and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His
wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our
hands.I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's
hand,but he wouldn't take it,so instead I
went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as
quietly as I could.I asked the little girl where
they lived..“Mexico,”she said..They were in
Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a
fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they
would go home.

One rainy spring day,Mom became a
single mother. My little brother was two,my
sister was eight,and I was fourteen.Those first
weeks were especially hard before our small
monthly support payments began.Mom found
work in a potato-chip factory,but didn't get
paid right away.
That first Saturday morning as she left for
work,Mom said,"I don't know what you'll

Monday,but I'm out of money,and our
shelves are bare."She laughed, but tears filled
her eyes.
"Does that fairy tale have a happy ending?
No,but we'l do better,”I said..“T'll try to get

to myself. She shook her head and went to

I had planted a garden in our backyard.
The lettuce(莴苣)and peas were up,but
nothing was ready to eat.I looked through the
kitchen and discovered Mom was right. We only
had cereal(麦片)for our breakfast..

A teacher in New York decided to honor
each of her seniors in high school by telling
them the difference they each made. She called
each student to the front of the class, one at a
time.First, she told them how the student made
a difference to her and the class. Then she
presented each of them with a blue ribbon(
imprinted with gold letters which read,
“Who I Am Makes a Difference..”
Afterwards the teacher decided to do a
class project to see what kind of influence
recognition would have on a community. She
gave each of the students three more ribbons
and instructed them to go out and spread this
acknowledgment ceremony.Then they were to
follow up on the results, see who honored
whom and report back to the class in about a
week.
One of the boys in the class went to a
junior manager in a nearby company and
honored him for helping him with his career
planning. The boy gave him a blue ribbon and
put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra
ribbons, and told him what it was all about.
Later that day,the junior manager went in
to see his boss, who had been noted,by the
way,as being kind of a conceited(傲慢的)
fellow. He seated his boss down and told him
that he deeply admired him for being a creative
genius.The boss seemed very surprised.The
junior manager asked him if he would accept
the gift of the blue ribbon and give him
permission to put it on him.His surprised boss
said,“Wel,sure.”The junior manager took the
blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's
jacket above his heart.
As he gave him the last extra ribbon,he
said,"Would you do me a favor?Would you
take this extra ribbon and pass it on by
honoring somebody else? The young boy who
first gave me the ribbons is doing project in

At Dana's yard sale,Tim chose a baseball
from the toys spread on the card table and
asked about the price.Dana told him everything
was a quarter except Nezumi,a cotton toy rat.
It was grey with some cotton sticking out from
the hole where an ear had been torn off.
"Nezumi is extra special,so he is ten
dollars.He needs a safe new home,"Dana
sighed.Tim laughed,saying he didn't have ten
dollars.Dana laughed too and gave Nezumi to
Tim as a free gift because he was her friend.
When Tim whispered that it was sort of old,
Dana said old toys were the best. She then
invited Tim to her birthday party the next
evening, adding that her parents were giving
her a real rat for her birthday.Tim was amazed
and asked if it was a live rat.
“Of course,”Dana said.
At home,Tim's mother showed him the
gift she had bought for Dana.It was a knitting
spool(针织线轴)shaped like a mushroom.
Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll.
Tim sighed that Dana wasn't knitting kind of
person but a rat kind of person.Mom laughed
after knowing what had happened.Together
they drove to the pet store, where Tim
searched and searched and selected a clear
plastic ball,in which the rat could run around
on the floor safe from cats and dogs.Tim
thought of Nezumi's ear and decided Dana's
new rat would need this ball.
The next day,Dana brought cupcakes to
the class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim,
she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as
Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks.Tim was at
a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed.
Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her.
Tim replied that it was a surprise. In silence
they sat for a while before he heard Dana say
her parents were giving her a new bike for her
birthday instead of a live rat because they
thought rats would bite things.

An anxious call came into Jimmy Gilleece's
bar.A newly married woman, who had spent
the afternoon at the bar, couldn't find her
wallet.She didn't care about her ID,credit
cards,or $150 in cash-but her wedding ring
was inside.
Gilleece didn't like the idea that a theft
could have occurred at his place. So he set out
to look for the wallet. He spent hours looking
through security camera videos,watching the
woman's every step in the bar until she went to
sit on a bench outside and left when her ride
arrived.Within minutes,a young man
approached the bench,slipped something into
his pocket,and walked off.Gilleece posted a
clip(片段)on the bar's website.“I didn't want
to punish him,”he said.“I just asked if

anybody knew who the guy was.
Within hours,Gilleece got a text from 17-
year-old Prather,who admitted having taken
the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because
he hadn't eaten for two days.He said he saw
the ring but thought it was fake(假的),sohe
took the money and threw the wallet off the
dock(码头)into the ocean.Then he bought a
sandwich.
Gilleece,unsure whether he believed
Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock,
where they got talking and Prather revealed
that he wasn't getting along with his family and
had been living in the woods for a week.
Judging from Prather's small body and red
cheeks,Gilleece saw him for what he was:
more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case,
and because of the missing ring,Prather could
be facing charges."He would be going to big
boy prison.I have to help him somehow,"
Gilleece thought.

the Sunshine Children's Home for voluntary work.
On arrival, they presented the kids with gifts. Then they
involved the kids in activities. Some taught the older to draw
pictures.Others told stories to the younger.Later they held a
party playing games, singing and dancing together. All day the
kids were immersed in happiness.
Voluntary work of this kind is significant. Not only does it

To promote the traditional Chinese culture, the First
Community Culture Festival was held in our community during

which residents took an active part in.Besides,an exhibition of
the photography and calligraphy works from some residents
attracted people of all ages. With the enthusiastic participation

The police station immediately sent some rescuers to the site.
They communicated with Mike the entire time, initially tried
lowering a rope but found he was unable to catch it.In a last-
ditch effort, they used concrete-cutting saws to break through
one of the walls and create an opening.Eventually the policemen
were able to free Mike successfully.Mike was taken to the
nearest hospital at once.Thankfully,he recovered from the
accident soon and began to play baseball again.

I stared.“Really?There's no purchase required?”“None at
all. These are free.Go and see.I thanked him and went to the
store with my brother and sister, where colourful balloons still
announced the grand opening. We walked inside and showed our
cards to the nearest clerk."It says these are gift coupons,"she
said."These items are absolutely free."We could hardly believe
it.We picked up the goods and left the store with broad smiles.
When Mom returned,we had food on the table."Where did
you get this?”Mom asked.“Guess..!”I said.And then I
showed her the ice cream in the fridge. She had her eyes wide
open."Where did all these come from?"she asked.I told her
about the man who gave me the cards and the new grocery store
as we had our meal. She shook her head again, this time with a
sense of wonder.I could see tears of relief welled up in her eyes.

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son.He
said,"The most incredible thing happened to me today.I was in
my office when one of the junior managers came in and told me he
admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative
genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says 'Who I Am Makes
a Difference'on my jacket. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked
me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home
tonight,I started thinking about whom I would honor with this
ribbon and I thought about you.I want to honor you."
"My days are really busy and I don't pay a lot of attention to
you,"continued the father."Sometimes I scream at you,but
somehow tonight,I just let you know that you make a difference
to me.You're a great kid and I love you!"The startled boy

started to sob,and he couldn't stop crying. He looked at his

At home that afternoon,Tim stared at the plastic rat ball.
Wondering about the use of the clear plastic ball if Dana had no
rat,he started walking up and down the room with a frown on
his face.Mom was surprised and asked him what was
happening.Tim told her Dana wasn't getting a live rat from her
parents but a bike.As they were racking their brains to come up
with an appropriate gift,Tim turned around and saw Nezumi on
his bed.
All of a sudden,he had an idea.He lifted Nezumi and
squeezed Nezumi into the plastic ball with great caution so that
Nezumi would be safe from cats and dogs.Seeing this,Mom
asked Tim whether he was giving Dana an old cotton rat with one
ear as a gift.Tim nodded with a smile, saying she would
definitely like it.Looking at Mom's confused expression,Tim
added that Dana was a Nezumi kind of person who thought old
toys were the BEST.

Gilleece paid two divers to search the waters where Prather
had thrown the wallet.A crowd gathered, excitedly watching the
two divers searching in the strong current.Nearby, two policemen
were also waiting.More than an hour passed but there was no
sign of the ring. The crowd gradually got impatient, starting to
talk noisily.Gilleece grew increasingly worried, especially when
the policemen began questioning Prather, attempting to get him
to admit keeping the ring. Each passing minute increased the
chance that they would arrest the young man.
Then suddenly a diver came up to the surface of the water.
In his hand was the wallet and inside was the ring.Loud cheers
erupted from the crowd.Gilleece quickly called the wallet's
owner, who was wild with joy and immediately dropped the
charges against Prather. With tears of gratitude rolling down his
cheeks,Prather hugged Gilleece tightly, saying,"You saved me
today.I couldn't thank you enough!"Prather promised to go back
home to join his family.Gilleece's act of kindness changed a teen's
