The findings have appeared after two kilograms of seeds spent six months on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the astronaut, Tim Peake, as part of his Principia mission (普林西比任务). There, the seeds could have taken in up to 100 times more radiation (辐射) than on Earth while being influenced by the violent shaking from the stresses of space travel. When the seeds returned to Earth in 2016, 600,000 children from schools across Britain took part in an experiment, supported by the UK Space Agency, to plant them and monitor their growth, comparing it to that of seeds that had remained on Earth. The results showed that, though the space seeds grew more slowly and had a shorter lifespan, they were still able to survive. Peake said, “When humans travel to Mars, they will need to find ways to feed themselves, and this research helps us understand some of the biology of seed storage and germination (发芽) which will be important for future space missions.” The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) tasked 8,600 schools and groups across Britain with taking part in the controlled study and recording their results as a scientist would. It was part of a project called Rocket Science, led by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, in partnership with the UK Space Agency. RHS manager Alana Cama said, “The Rocket Science experiment opened a window into space biology and allowed young people to be at the forefront of creative research.” “This research project did more than just inspire (激励); it furthered our understanding of the challenges around growing plants in unusual environments and the possibility of growing food on long-term space missions in the future. Inspiring a new generation of botanists and biologists will remain our goal to make life richer for everyone through plants.” 14.What do the findings of the experiment show? A.The future of growing plants in space looks bright. B.Astronauts successfully grew salad seeds on Mars. C.Salad seeds sent into space turned out to be a failure. D.The radiation makes it impossible for plants to survive. 15.Which word can be filled in the blank to complete the research steps? Carry the seeds into space → Bring them back to Earth → ________ their growth → Make comparisons A.Update B.Protect C.Watch D.Improve 16.Unlike those on Earth, the seeds sent into space ________. A.can grow 100 times larger in size B.provide enough food for astronauts C.stop growing when returning to Earth D.are more likely to grow old faster 17.What can we learn from what Alana Cama said? A.Growing plants in unusual environments is no longer a challenging task. B.The project inspires the interests of the young generation in creative fields. C.The exploration of growing food in space is the central mission in the future. D.A new generation of botanists and biologists does the most important work in the research. C People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. A new study adds chickens to the list. It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls. The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves. Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens. The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can pinpoint chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the chickens happier and healthier. 18.Which is most probably the sound wave of a happy call by a chicken? (t for time; s for sound volume音量) A. B. C. D. 19.How did the volunteers help with the research? A.By listening to the chicken calls. B.By taking care of the chickens. C.By finding food for the chickens. D.By making the chickens happy. 20.The underlined word “pinpoint” in Paragraph 4 can be used in Zootopia 2 is here! This time, a mysterious ① makes some animals act very strangely across the city. Watch and find out! A.① B.② C.③ D.④ 21.What’s the purpose of the passage? A.To show a possible use in farming with animals’ feelings. B.To prove (证明) animals have similar feelings like humans. C.To describe different sounds that chickens are able to make. D.To tell how easily humans can understand animals’ feelings. D The Mole (鼹鼠) had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home. Suddenly he cried, “Forget this spring-cleaning!” and rushed out of his house. Something up above was calling him to the sunshine and the fresh air. He dug and dug through the tunnel (隧道). And then suddenly, his paws (爪) broke into the open air, and he found himself lying in the warm grass of a great field. “This is wonderful!” he said to himself. “This is much better than cleaning!” He walked across the field until he reached a river. For the first time in his life, the Mole saw a river. It was shining and dancing in the sun, full of life and little happy waves. It seemed to play with everything it touched. He was completely amazed. As he sat on the grass, looking at the river, a dark hole in the opposite bank caught his eye. Something bright and small seemed to shine from it. Then, out of the hole jumped out a brown little face with whiskers (胡须). It was the Water Rat (河鼠)! “Hello, Mole!” said the Rat. “Hello, Rat!” said the Mole. “Would you like to come over?” asked the Rat. “Oh, it’s easy for you to say,” said the Mole, feeling nervous, for the river was so new, wonderful but big to him. The Rat said nothing, but he picked up a long rope that was lying near the bank. With a quick, smooth movement, he pulled a little wooden boat out from some thick plants. “That’s how we cross,” he said cheerfully. “Jump in—or, let me come across for you!” In a moment, the boat touched the grass where the Mole sat. Shaking with excitement but full of trust, he stepped carefully into the boat and began his very first journey on the river, and a friendship that was to grow with every passing day. Adapted from The Wind in the Willows 22.Why did the Mole suddenly rush out of his house? A.He heard someone calling him. B.He wanted some sunshine and air. C.He wanted to clean his tunnel. B.The river brought a feeling of joy and liveliness. C.The river liked dancing and playing with animals. D.The river made the Mole scared when he first saw it. 24.What does the underlined sentence show? A.The Mole thought the Rat was good at talking. B.The Mole thought crossing the river was easy. C.The Mole became excited about the Rat’s invitation. D.The Mole doubted whether he could cross the river. 25.Which of the following can best show the Mole’s experience? The book was shown to Su Shi and the old man said, “Though I have read the book many times, there are still some difficult words that I can’t understand. You are a person with rich knowledge so I come to you for help.” Su Shi took the book from the old man’s hand happily. He thought he would understand the words. It’s really wonderful to live on Mars. I think life on Mars is more comfortable and more interesting than that on the Earth. There are no schools on Mars. We have online schools instead of real ones. We have lessons, do our homework, take exams and talk to teachers and classmates through the computers connected to an interplanetary network at home. It’s not so crowded here so we have more space to live. Most of our housework is done by robots so that we can have more free time for our hobbies. Mars is very beautiful. There are green trees and fresh flowers everywhere, and there is no pollution here. We have supermarkets in our neighbourhood. They make our life more convenient. I believe you will enjoy the life on Mars. Its mission was to explore the planet and look for signs of life. This was a huge step for China’s space program. Before the landing, scientists faced many 1 . Mars had extreme cold, reaching minus 100°C, and signals took a long time to reach Earth. But the team didn’t 2 . They worked 3 and solved all problems. When the rover moved, it quickly collected soil samples and sent data (资料) back. Later, “Tianwen-3” found 4 evidence (迹象) of water ice under the Martian soil. This was great news as it could help future human living on Mars. The rover also took 5 photos of Mars’ landscape, showing rocks, valleys and a red sky. After the main mission, “Tianwen-3” will work 6 until its energy is used up. This project shows China’s strong 7 in space exploration. The “Tianwen-3” mission also inspired students. To solve it, Judy Hopps must use her sharp eye to ② the hidden bad guy behind. She teams up with Nick Wilde for another exciting and ③ adventure. Can they find the answer in time to ④ Zootopia safe? D.He was thirsty and wanted some water. 23.According to Paragraph 3, what can we know about the river? A.The river was clean and it made animals happy. A.A lesson about the importance of crossing a river safely. B.A sad reason about why an animal chose to leave his home. C.An exciting story about an animal exploring the new world. D.A funny adventure about a rat and a mole playing in the river. 第三部分 信息还原(共5小题:每小题1分,满分5分) 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 An old man lived in a village. Maybe…or maybe not, but what we do know is that in the future, cities are going to have more and more people living in them. Having more people means that we’ll need more 40 , like water and energy, and more ways to grow food too. It also means that we will need more space for homes, schools, hospitals and parks. Perhaps all the buildings and roads will be 41 and we’ll just have parks and cycle lanes above. Many cities are already planning for the future. For example, Bristol is a cycling city in England. When he was young, he read a lot of books and wrote so many good articles that people thought he was pretty talented. Because of this, he wrote a couplet (对联) for himself: Know all the words in the world Read all the books on the earth An old man saw this couplet and thought, “Su Shi is so proud. It is necessary for him to learn how to be modest.” So one day, he came to Su Shi’s house with a book. The book was shown to Su Shi and the old man said, “Though I have read the book many times, there are still some difficult words that I can’t understand. You are a person with rich knowledge so I come to you for help.” Su Shi took the book from the old man’s hand happily. He thought he would understand the words. However, when he opened it, he saw a lot of words he didn’t know. At that time, Su Shi realized that there were many other things he needed to learn. His face turned red and he said, “Now I know why you came.” Hearing Su Shi’s words, the old man smiled without saying anything. That day, they read the book together for several hours and both of them learned a lot from each other. After the old man left, Su Shi added some words to the couplet: Work hard to know all the words in the world Be determined to read all the books on the earth From then on, Su Shi worked even harder. He spent more time reading books and he practised writing all the time. Day by day, he got better and became more successful. 54.Why did the old man take a book to Su Shi’s house? 55.How did Su Shi’s action change after meeting the old man? 56.What do you think of this story?
