W: The first would be to do online banking. If your bank does not have a mobile app, it makes it so much harder to see what's going on with your money.
M: What about investing?
W: You should really only start investing if you don't owe money elsewhere. For example, you should pay your house off before you invest.
M: Why is that?
W: Because any money you earn through investments still goes to pay the interest on the house you bought.
M: Thanks for your advice.

I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I met a courteous human being in this modern era of the so-called Generation X.
Recently, I had to change my thinking when I came face-to-face with just such a human being. I had gone to a fashionable coffee place with two of my grown-up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd, and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were walking down the steep stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single file, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.
Just as I was in the middle of the staircase, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant, which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who would want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister (扶手), in spite of my advanced years. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.
Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door, which he kept holding open. I looked back, thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it, and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through.
We admired his kindness for both waiting for us to come down before going up himself, and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. To date, I still remember this gentleman and pray to God to make more human beings like him.
24.Before she met the man in the restaurant, the author had thought .
A.human beings were born courteous
B.she didn’t belong to the Generation X
C.there were few polite people in the modern society
D.having coffee in a fancy café was not her cup of tea
25.In paragraph 2, the underlined phrase “in a single file” means that .
A.walking down the stairs was like walking on a document
B.the staircase was so narrow that only one person was allowed at a time
C.climbing down the staircase was easy as long as we held the file in hand
D.we needed permission from the restaurant owner before we walked down
26.What can we infer from the passage about the author?
A.She tended to feel nervous in stressful situations.
B.She was short-tempered and often walked very fast.
C.She was a lady in her early thirties and was quite fit.
D.She was grateful and directly expressed thanks to the man.
27.Which of the following best describes the gentleman?
A.Moral and well-mannered. B.Curious and considerate.
C.Cautious and committed. D.Ambitious and unselfish.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.A
根据第一段“I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I met a courteous human being in this modern era of the so-called Generation X. (我曾经认为礼貌是过去的事。在这个所谓的X时代的现代,我很少遇到有礼貌的人。)”可知,在这次相遇之前,作者认为在现代社会中很少有礼貌的人。故选C项。
25.词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were walking down the steep stairs, where the narrow space (享用完咖啡和点心后,我们走下陡峭的楼梯,那里狭窄的空间)”和下文“with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down (几乎没有空间让另一个人上去或下来)”可知,楼梯陡峭,且空间狭窄,因此一次只能走一个人,画线部分指“楼梯太窄,一次只能容纳一个人”。故选B项。
根据第三段中“My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort. (我的女儿们已经下楼了,担心地抬头看着我,希望我能在那个陌生人开始上楼前到达她们那里,因为她们知道我是个容易紧张的人。)”可知,面对陌生人可能即将走上狭窄楼梯的情况,女儿们很担忧容易紧张的作者。由此推知,作者容易在压力情境下感到紧张。故选A项。
根据第四段“I told my daughters about it, and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through. (我把这件事告诉了我的女儿们,我们三个人都觉得很抱歉,因为我们甚至没有感谢那位礼貌的先生,他实际上是在为我们女士们开门,让我们通过。)”最后一段中“We admired his kindness for both waiting for us to come down before going up himself, and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. (我们都很佩服他的善良,他先等我们下来再上去,还为我们开着大门让我们出去。)”可知,这位绅士主动让行,并为作者一行人开门,说明他有道德,有礼貌。故选A项。

Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. To address this, engineers at Ohio State University have now made handheld tools that put out fires cleanly with “ionic (离子的) wind” and vortex (涡流) rings.
If you’ve ever blown out a birthday candle, you’ll know that a quick burst of air can be enough to put out a flame. It works by separating the heat from the fuel so it can’t start again. But blowing on a campfire doesn’t help — it’s too big, and you just add oxygen.
The new device is like a bigger version of the birthday candle trick. First, it shoots a vortex ring of air that creates wild airflow to split heat and fuel. At the same time, the vortex carries tiny conductive particles (导电颗粒) that ionize the air and make even more vortex. In practice, firefighters would aim this handheld tool at a fire and shoot these “ionic wind” rings to put it out. That would also reduce the expense and cleanup.
“Using ionic wind and vortex ring technology, we found a more efficient way to solve an environmental problem that will improve lives,” lead researcher John Larocco said. One of the biggest advantages of this device is that it allows firefighters to put out flames from a safer distance, reducing the risk of injury. Since vortex rings can carry chemicals over long distances, firefighters wouldn’t need to get dangerously close to fires.
Much more work still needs to be done, however. For one thing, the devices were tested on groups of candles, which aren’t like real house or forest fires. Testing them against more realistic fires is a priority for future experiments. Still, the team thinks this technology could really work in the real world. The researchers also believe this device could be improved with smart sensors and image analysis, making it more precise in detecting different types of fires. Beyond firefighting, this technology could have future applications in aerospace and industrial safety.
28.Why did engineers at Ohio State University invent the new handheld tools?
A.To take full advantage of water and foam. B.To enhance firefighters’ professional skills.
C.To abandon traditional firefighting methods. D.To reduce the rescue damage to the environment.
29.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning the birthday candle in paragraph 2?
A.The principle of putting out a flame by air.
B.The efficient way to blow out a birthday candle.
C.The difference between a small flame and a campfire.
D.The reason why blowing on a campfire doesn’t work.
30.Why can the new device lower the risk of injuries?
A.It creates stronger wind than other tools. B.It absorbs harmful substances in the smoke.
C.It enables users to stay farther from the fire. D.It allows firemen to avoid using chemicals.
31.What is the researchers’ expectation for the new device?
A.It will prevent all types of fire. B.It will reform the aerospace industry.
C.It will be more intelligent and accurate. D.It will be widely used by ordinary people.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.C
根据“Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. To address this, engineers at Ohio State University have now made handheld tools that put out fires cleanly with “ionic (离子的) wind” and vortex (涡流) rings. (灭火通常会使用水或泡沫,但这些方法可能会造成混乱并对周围环境造成损害。为了解决这个问题,俄亥俄州立大学的工程师们现在研制出了手持式工具,它们利用“离子风”和涡旋环来干净地扑灭火灾。)”可知,文章第一段提到传统灭火方式会造成混乱并破坏周围环境,为解决这一问题,工程师们制造出一种新型手持工具。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“If you’ve ever blown out a birthday candle, you’ll know that a quick burst of air can be enough to put out a flame. It works by separating the heat from the fuel so it can’t start again. But blowing on a campfire doesn’t help — it’s too big, and you just add oxygen. (如果你曾经吹灭过生日蜡烛,你就会知道,一股快速吹出的气流就足以扑灭火焰。其原理是将热量与燃料分离开来,这样火焰就无法再次燃烧了。但对着篝火吹气却没什么效果——篝火太大了,你这样做只会增加氧气的供应。)”可知,作者提及生日蜡烛意在说明通过空气扑灭火焰的原理。故选A。
根据第四段“One of the biggest advantages of this device is that it allows firefighters to put out flames from a safer distance, reducing the risk of injury. Since vortex rings can carry chemicals over long distances, firefighters wouldn’t need to get dangerously close to fires. (该设备的最大优势之一在于,它能让消防员在更安全的距离扑灭火焰,从而降低受伤的风险。由于涡旋环能够将化学物质远距离输送,消防员就不必冒险靠近火灾现场了。)”可知,这种装置最大的优点之一是它可以让消防员从更安全的距离扑灭火焰,减少受伤的风险。由于涡流环可以将化学物质携带到很远的地方,消防员不需要危险地靠近火场。故选C。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Still, the team thinks this technology could really work in the real world. The researchers also believe this device could be improved with smart sensors and image analysis, making it more precise in detecting different types of fires. (不过,该团队认为这项技术在实际应用中确实可行。研究人员还相信,通过配备智能传感器和图像分析技术,该设备能够更精确地检测不同类型的火灾。除了用于灭火之外,这项技术在航空航天和工业安全领域也可能有未来的应用前景。)”可知,研究人员希望这个新设备更智能,更精准。故选C。
D
Staring at the bookcases in my study, packed with so many great books that had remained unread, I heard a loud voice in my head — “Shame on you! How can you leave these masterpieces unread?”
The first book I picked up was Montaigne’s Essays. To my surprise I discovered in the margins (页边空白) what clearly was my own faded hand-writing. So I was actually reading it again, but what I was rereading seemed entirely new. I also found sentences underlined. Only this time I wondered: Why did I underline this sentence? It’s the next one that is important!
Clearly, my way of reading the text had shifted, and I myself had changed over the years. This raised the larger question of rereading. It comes in many forms. There’s voluntary rereading, the result of a willful decision to revisit a book one has admired, or a book that has left one with some unanswered questions. This kind of planned revisit could also be for confirming certain details in the text, or for checking on the moves of a given character. A devoted teacher might also wish to refresh his closeness to a work, and thus avoid teaching through the same old written notes with soporific (让人瞌睡的) effects.
Contrarily, there’s involuntary rereading. The original reading was either forgotten or so totally absorbed that the new chance encounter with the text produced surprise and astonishment. My reaction to the renewed reading no longer corresponded to the original experience, and I was no longer sure that I recognized myself as the same reader.
Then there are what one might call subconscious (潜意识的) rereadings, those that occur without the specific act of reading, much as the memory of a tune can keep coming back to the mind without its actually being heard again. This form of remembered contact with a book can accompany us during a lifetime and continue to strengthen and shape us. Much in the same manner, we may over the years recite to ourselves poems learnt by heart long ago, which have become part of our self-recognition.
All of these ways of reading are valuable. Renewed contact with a novel or a poem can activate the search for a better knowledge of the self. The new reading a form of revision, uncovers the change in us. The newness is not in the text. It is we who have evolved. In the process of rereading, our outlook has also been significantly changed. Rereading makes it possible for us to see the world around us, ourselves included, in a new light.
32.According to the author, what could be a purpose of voluntary rereading?
A.To improve the quality of teaching. B.To learn from admirable characters.
C.To collect details for writing novels. D.To help making important decisions.
33.According to Paragraph 4, what can involuntary rereading bring about?
A.Unexpected reading experience. B.Total concentration on new books.
C.Changed preferences for books. D.Enhanced reading skills.
34.What can be learnt about subconscious rereading?
A.It prevents memory from fading. B.It helps make who we are.
C.It involves actual reading. D.It works best with poetry and music.
35.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Accessing Masterpieces through Rereading. B.Rereading: Voluntary or Involuntary?
C.Rereading: Pursuit of Truth. D.Transformative Power of Rereading.
【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.D
根据第三段“A devoted teacher might also wish to refresh his closeness to a work, and thus avoid teaching through the same old written notes with soporific (让人瞌睡的) effects.(一位敬业的教师可能也希望重新建立与作品的亲密关系,因此避免通过具有催眠效果的相同的旧笔记来进行教学)”可知,教师通过主动再读更新内容,提高教学质量是主动再读的目的之一。故选A。
根据第四段“Contrarily, there’s involuntary rereading. 34.细节理解题。根据第五段“This form of remembered contact with a book can accompany us during a lifetime and continue to strengthen and shape us. Much in the same manner, we may over the years recite to ourselves poems learnt by heart long ago, which have become part of our self-recognition.(这种与书籍的“记忆性接触”能够伴随我们一生,并不断强化和塑造我们。
Nostalgia — the warm feeling of longing for the past— is everywhere in today’s culture. Movies like Barbie, Indiana Jones, and Top Gun are drawing huge crowds by bringing back old favorites. 36
On the surface, nostalgia simply makes us feel good. 37 According to Professor Ziyan Yang from the Institute of Psychology, CAS, nostalgia creates feelings of warmth, belonging, and even a mental escape to the past. During tough times — whether personal struggles or global crises — nostalgia acts like an emotional safety net. Movies and music are powerful triggers because they recreate familiar emotions and experiences.
38 First, it gives us a sense of control. Even when life feels unpredictable, reflecting on our past helps us feel more grounded and secure. Second, nostalgia strengthens social bonds. Though it seems like a personal experience, nostalgic memories often remind us of family, friends, and shared moments.
What does nostalgia do to our brains? Mostly good things! Studies show it boosts happiness, creativity, and energy by activating positive emotions. 39 This youthful optimism encourages us to take risks and chase our goals. Some researchers suggest nostalgia acts like a “psychological immune system”, helping us cope with stress.
But can too much nostalgia be harmful? In small amounts, it’s healthy. However, if we think about the past too much, it can keep us from moving forward. The key is balance — enjoying memories without losing sight of the present. 40 It helps us reconnect with our true selves and remember who we really are.
In short, nostalgia isn’t just about reliving the past — it’s a tool that helps us navigate the present and future with hope.
A.But why do we love nostalgia so much?
B.This is why reunions feel so meaningful to us.
C.Nostalgia also serves key psychological needs.
D.However, psychology experts say there’s more to it.
E.It can even make us feel younger and more optimistic.
F.Remembering happy memories brings comfort and joy.
G.Still, in general, nostalgia is a natural and positive part of life.

During tough times — whether personal struggles or global crises — nostalgia acts like an emotional safety net. Movies and music are powerful triggers because they recreate familiar emotions and experiences.(据中国科学院心理研究所杨紫嫣教授介绍,怀旧之情会让人产生温暖、归属感,甚至是一种精神上对过去的逃避。 D选项“However, psychology experts say there’s more to it.(然而,心理学专家表示,事情远不止于此。)”

40.由上文“But can too much nostalgia be harmful? In small amounts, it’s healthy. However, if we think about the past too much, it can keep us from moving forward. The key is balance — enjoying memories without losing sight of the present.(但太多的怀旧会有害吗?少量摄入是健康的。然而,如果我们过多地思考过去,它可能会阻碍我们前进。关键在于平衡——在不忽视当下的情况下享受回忆。)”及下文“It helps us reconnect with our true selves and remember who we really are.(它帮助我们重新连接真实的自我,记住自己的本质。)” G选项“Still, in general, nostalgia is a natural and positive part of life.(不过,总的来说,怀旧是生活中自然且积极的一部分。)”

At the far end of town, next to a dark forest, sits an old and shabby white house. Kids at school call it the Spook House. It’s where I live with Mom, little brother Andy and Grammy. The outside looks scary; The paint is coming off, the shutters are loose with rusty nails, and weeds are everywhere around it.
Mom rented it because our old apartment was too small. I thought she was crazy at first, but I knew she did her best — money was tight. She cleaned every room and painted the inside with bright colors. I loved my newly-painted bedroom, but the outside stayed ugly. Mr. Dudley, our landlord, kept making excuses to avoid painting it.
“Let’s do it ourselves!” I suggested one evening while we were washing dishes. Mom paused, her hands in soapy water, and sighed. “Honey, paint and tools cost money — we can’t just splash cash like that.” But Grammy, who’ d been knitting on the couch, set down her yarn and smiled. “I’ ve got a little nest egg saved up from my knitting sales. It’s not much, but it’ ll help.” I grinned, running to grab my piggy bank — my babysitting money, which I’d been saving for a new graphic novel, suddenly felt way less important. “I’ ll chip in too!” Andy yelled from the living room, where he was coloring a picture of the house. “I can pull weeds! I’m super good at it!”
We headed to the hardware store that weekend and picked out paint: Blue Heron for the walls and Gull White for the trim. on the way home, we ran into Juan — an older boy from my history class who’d been talking about starting his own small paint business lately. When we mentioned our plan to paint the house, his face lit up right away. “I’ll help paint high parts if you treat me with homemade pizza!” We agreed.
Every weekend, we worked together: Mom held the ladder, Grammy brought lemonade, Andy pulled weeds, and I handed brushes. My arms ached, but Andy’s grins kept me going. After two weeks, the house shone — bright blue, white trim, and red geraniums by the door. We stood in the yard, grinning. I touched the warm paint, feeling something soft in my chest.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Para 1: Every weekend after that, we became a little work team.

Para2: After two weeks, the house shone.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1: Every weekend after that, we became a little work team. Mom held the ladder steady for Juan, her hair tied back in a messy ponytail to keep it neat. Grammy set up a folding chair on the porch, and whenever we took a break, she brought out cold lemonade in mason jars, its sweetness refreshing us instantly. Wearing tiny gardening gloves, Andy pulled weeds with all his strength, his cheeks turning pink from the hard work. I handed Juan brushes and dipped them in paint, my arms growing sore after an hour but my heart full of energy. Tired as we were, no one complained — we all knew we were making our house better together.
Para 2: After two weeks, the house shone. On its walls was the soft Blue Heron color, and the trim was white Gull White, with two pots of red geraniums Mom bought standing by the front door. We stood in the yard together, grinning like fools and staring at our new-looking house. I reached out to touch the paint warm from the sun and smooth under my fingers. Something soft and fuzzy settled in my chest then, like a gentle hug from the inside out. I finally realized: Pretty paint makes a house look nice, but it’s the love and effort we share that turns it into a true home.

C

So have you only recently moved to the area? Yeah. that's right. My grandmother needs a lot of care now, so we moved here to be closer to her. Luckily, my dad's company has an office nearby, so he didn't need to find a new job. Oh, that's lucky. Yeah, i'm excited to be here. I've heard this is one of the best schools in the country. Most of the students here tend to go on to really good colleges. I'm applying to oxford myself. I'm hoping to study medicine at cambridge. Wow, cool. While we have some really good facilities. Yeah what is the science lab like? I guess that's where i'll be spending most of my time. Everything's up to date, but I haven't spent much time there. I'm not really . a scientist. What subjects are you studying? French art and history. My dream is to move to paris and work in an art museum someday. Wow, cool. Have you ever been to paris? There was a school trip a few years ago. I was amazing. It's coming again this year, but I expect i'll be too busy studying for the exams. Hi, i'm jack. Let me show you around.
