A
Standing on the shore of a lake,I can't help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small
rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.
And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?
Even the tallest mountains have worn down;none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago.And
much like a rock,I've found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has
expanded with each trip around the sun.
Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges.Today, after decades of the waters of life
coursing over me,my edges are softer and more understanding.I'm less likely to judge and more
interested in learning how we can exist together.
But I'm not a rock.I'm a human-being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.
Two years ago, while travelling in the Pacific Northwest,I watched a restaurant owner ask a guy to
leave for not falling in line with the rules. Not forceful and not rude.On the door read a sign:"Please
wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don't like it either, but let's all do what we can."But
the guy tried to argue about the note.
I sat watching, understanding both sides.I've been this guy before, using my youthful edges to chip
away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow by looking through others'eyes, and
thus the possibility of finding content and success.
You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to
adjust and make room for others;the latter never give an inch to accommodate others.Time, like the
waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world
from another's point of view.
I placed a rounded stone into my pocket.Mother Nature is holding class again.
1.What does the author compare the rocks to?
A.People with varied personalities.
B.DNA unique to each person.
C.Challenges that we come across.
D.Our abilities that grow with time.
2.What caused the argument in the restaurant?
A.Lack of clarity in the sign.
B.The owner's inappropriate attitude.
C.Demanding restaurant requests.
D.The guy's failing to obey the rules.
3.Which best describes the author's attitude towards the world when he was young?
A.Respectful.B.Aggressive.
C.Ambiguous.
D.Tolerant.
4.What does the author try to convey through this text?
A.Be brave in the face of difficulties in life.
B.We should adjust ourselves to new conditions.
C.It's necessary to obey the rules in public spaces.
D.Being open and understanding brings satisfaction.

The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the
fundamental biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies ()The latest
fountain of youth to pour from the lab comes in the form of vaccines ()against age-related
conditions-cancer,heart disease, dementia and more. The first of these could be available by the end
of the decade.All-purpose anti-ageing injections are also in development.
The upsides of such vaccines are clear.Anything that limits the impact of age-related conditions on
people who live into old age-not to mention on the loved ones who often end up caring for them-has to
be welcomed. They also promise to lessen effect on the increasingly societal and economic costs of these
diseases.
But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too.If millions of people live
significantly longer,we risk a population explosion on a planet whose resources are already
overstretched. If the vaccines merely delay the beginning of age-related conditions, they will only
postpone the burden on people and society. And as Nobel prizewinner Venki Ramakrishnan told us
earlier this year,a long-lived society is likely to be an unmoving one. These are familiar fears. The
common answer is that the goal is increased healthspan. That means people living for longer, free from
the diseases of old age, then suddenly declining and dying.
We won't know the outcome until the therapies have been widely used,at which point it will be too
late to put the genie back in the bottle. But there is really no turning back anyway. If vaccines and other
anti-ageing therapies work and are affordable, they will be used.Besides, nobody would argue that
innovations like antibiotics, vaccines and advanced diagnostics were a bad idea even though they marked
the beginning of our era of age-related diseases.Similarly,we shouldn't fear life-saving medical advances
on the basis of unintended consequences. If we can make lives longer and less painful, the downsides
are a price worth paying.
5.Why is the field of anti-ageing medicine growing rapidly?
A.The biology of ageing is better applied.
B.The trend of healthy lifestyle is rising.
C.The demand for a longer life is increasing.
D.The number of the elderly is rising globally.
6.How do anti-ageing vaccines benefit society?
A.By increasing the workforce.
B.By curing people of diseases.
C.By boosting economic growth
D.By reducing healthcare expense
7.What does the underlined phrase "put the genie back in the bottle"mean?
A.To stop the process of ageing.
B.To erase the impact of the therapies.
C.To create a new medical breakthrough.
D.To delay the development of technology.
8.What is the best title for the text?
A.Can Anti-Ageing Medicine Really Work?
B.What Is the Risk of Anti-Ageing Medicine?
C.How to Stay Young with Anti-Ageing Medicine?
D.Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine?

some top tips to make sure you're not caught out on your break abroad.
Treat yourself to a power bank
The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage.
10 So you're going to want some extra support so that you don't end up going AWOL (absent without
leave)when your phone dies. That's why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give
you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world.
Enable data roaming(漫游)
11 The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad.Make
sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is.In many countries it is
straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance.12 If
you've got a newer phone,it will probably support "eSIM"-where you can simply use an app like
Holafly or Airalo while connected to Wi-Fi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily.
Download offline application software
And finally, you need to get your apps in order.Once you reach your destination you'll need a
mapping app,and maybe even a translation app-Apple and Google make their own version of both.
And modern translation apps are particularly exciting.13 Then you get a clear translation.Make
sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like
a local..Bon voyage!
A.What good is a phone without Internet access?
B.You simply wave your phone at the scanner instead.
C.In fact, you may not even need a physical card anymore.
D.Why do you need to get your phone ready to be connected?
E.But when you're away from home, you're probably using it so much more.
F.You can typically just wave the camera of your phone over pretty much anything.
G.But before leaving for the airport, ensure your phone is ready for the journey ahead!

Shutes highlights the importance of small gestures,24 how eating lunch with shy or reserved

underestimate the impact of these 26 minor actions."Simple acts of 27,like sharing a meal
