Every student hopes to study English well. But how? Here are five points you can follow to improve your English and the first point is the most important.
Point 1 It’s your duty to reach your aims!
Studying English is your own duty and not the duty of your teachers or your parents. You must take an active part in your classes!
Point 2 Get a teacher or take a class!
It’s a little difficult to study English alone. Also, it’s difficult to learn how to speak English if you don’t have an English teacher to talk with.
Point 3 Work as hard as possible in class!
You need to practice speaking often. You should do all of your homework, read, and study vocabulary (词汇) outside class and then check the homework in class.
Point 4 Keep studying!
Don’t stop for a long time such as during a summer holiday! Studying at least three hours a week is necessary for you. To make great progress, two more hours are needed each week.
Point 5 Make English your hobby and have fun!
You can improve your English through other activities:
Reading—there are many English books and magazines. Choose some that you can read.

Travel—traveling in English-speaking countries can help you with your English.

A. Because no one can take your place to study.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know what to say.
What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t accept a compliment (恭维) in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She really understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest (谦虚). In the West, people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”
In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not mean being proud, so sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.
If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” while working in a Western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job, if someone says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try”, he or she will expect to get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.
21. Why did the girl answer “No, no” again and again according to the first paragraph?
A. The foreigner couldn’t make himself understood.
B. The girl couldn’t hear the foreigner clearly.
C. The girl is modest.
D. The girl is proud.
22. What will they say when someone praises the American people?
A. Certainly. B. Thank you. C. Don’t say that. D. The same to you.
23. In China, we think being proud is ________.
A. a virtue B. a bad thing C. being confident D. being modest
24. In a Western country, when asking for a job, you should say “________”.
A. Yes, I can do it well. B. Let me have a try. C. No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well. D. Maybe I can do it.
25. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. how to learn English well
B. what to say between the people in Western countries
C. how to praise someone
D. the differences in praise between Western and Chinese cultures
C
①One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn’t notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I didn’t make the pie successfully, I really enjoyed the process.
②The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
③But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.
④Don’t always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. And success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.
⑤Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
⑥Reward (奖励) yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. Rewarding yourself for small wins can go a long way. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favorite cake once in a while.
26. Why did the writer’s mother say the pie was the best one she had ever had?
A. Because the pie was truly delicious.
B. Because she wanted to encourage the writer for her hard work.
C. Because the writer followed the TV program and grandma’s advice.
D. Because the pie took the writer three hours to finish making.
27. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to make a delicious apple pie for parents.
B. Why many successful people like to compete with others.
C. Different meanings of success in different people’s eyes.
D. The importance of enjoying the process and ways to do it.
28. What does the sentence “ride your own ride” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Do things in your own way. B. Only focus on your own vehicle.
C. Never care about others’ opinions. D. Compete with others in a different way.
29. Which of the following is the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
30. Which saying does the passage want to tell us?
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. The process is more important than the result.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way.
D. Learning the new while reviewing the old.

四、读写结合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
Sayings are used every day. You may ask an unhappy friend why she’s “feeling blue”. If you’ve done only a small part of a big job, you might call it “a drop (滴) in the bucket (桶)”. These sayings don’t mean exactly what the words say. But it’s easy to tell why we use them. Blue is a cool, quiet color. So it’s a good word for “sad”. A bucket holds too many drops of water to count. So just one drop is very little.
Other sayings are more difficult to understand. When you are about to go to bed, you are going to “hit the hay (干草)”. This saying does not make much sense unless you know where it came from. It was first used in the 1930s. At that time, many Americans were out of work. Some went from place to place, looking for jobs. At night they were very tired. They often made a bed of hay in a field or barn (谷仓). As soon as their heads “hit the hay”, they fell asleep.
Here is another saying. When you are sick, you might say you are “under the weather”. But why? This saying is more than 200 years old. It began in the days when many people went from place to place by boat. When storm winds rocked the boat, people often felt sick. The boat was sailing (航行) “under the weather”.
Young kids may find old sayings like these hard to understand, and old people may also have difficulty understanding new sayings. That’s why a grandma might not know what you mean by saying “give me five”. She might think you’re “off your rocker” which means “out of your mind”. It seems that the sayings are also changing with the development of living conditions.
1. What’s the meaning of “a drop” in the saying “ a drop in the bucket”?

I find reading very boring, and it’s difficult for me to focus on the passage. Maybe the reason is that even though I know every word, I still don’t know the meaning of the sentence. Sometimes I really feel like giving up.

A how to learn English well
B. what to say between the people in Western countries
C. how to praise someone
D. the differences in praise between Western and Chinese cultures
【答案】21. C 22. B 23. B 24. A 25. D
