In Saskatchewan,Canada, vegetables have a short growing season. So a very unique farm in Hudson
Bay is growing fresh,pesticide-free(无农药的)vegetables in a hydroponic(水培的)farm all year long.
There the plants are grown in water instead of soil.
Growing vegetables in the middle of nowhere, about 300 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon, may seem
like a big risk, but there is no other place for people to get locally grown food.Produce is available in local
supermarkets but it is trucked in from far away.
The idea to turn the no-longer-used Stewart Hawke School into a farm came to the Nels when Hudson
Bay asked for bids for the building in 2018.It was empty and if an alternative use wasn't found,
it would be pulled down."We started looking for ideas, and we went and proposed doing this,"Jan Nel
said."And they loved it."
After the proposal was accepted, the family worked together to prepare the building in January 2019
and they planted the first seeds in just one classroom the next month.
The company has grown and is now using several rooms thanks to the quality of the produce and the
fact that it is local, according to June Nel."It's not two weeks old;it hasn't travelled across the country or
across the world,"she said."It actually tastes like lettuce.Lots of people have commented on our herbs.
It actually still tastes fresh when you get it,and there's no pesticide used."
She expects more producers to turn to hydroponics in the future but notes that the technology is limited
to only some fruits and vegetables and doesn't work for potatoes or grains."It's not the answer to the food
security question or challenge, but it will play an increasingly larger role,"she adds.
24.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Vegetables are plentiful in Saskatchewan.
B.People in Saskatchewan can't get fresh vegetables.
C.Hydroponic farms are very popular in Saskatchewan.
D.The climate in Saskatchewan is not good for farming.
25.What did the farm use to be?
A.A school.
B.A supermarket.
C.A garden.
D.A factory.
26.What is the biggest advantage of the Nels'vegetables?
A.They are cheap.
B.They are fresh.
C.They are nutritive.
D.They are delicious.

Black taxis have been a common sight in London for decades. Now these taxis and their drivers have
become the focus of a new exploration into Alzheimer's(阿尔茨海默症).For those on the outside,it may
seem that behind the wheel of these black taxis are just regular people who help move us to our destinations.
But within their brains is a map of London's streets that has put GPS technology to shame for decades.
"The Knowledge",the test for London's taxi drivers, stands among the hardest mental examinations
one could ever undergo. It involves recalling information repeatedly from the memory of minute details
about 560,000 streets in London, from Trafalgar Square to the tiniest residential lanes.
Normally,the hippocampus(海马体)feels the effects of Alzheimer's most..University College
London and Alzheimer's Research UK are studying these taxi drivers'brains,as it has been found that the
hippocampus controlling the brain's short-term memory and spatial )memory systems is enlarged
in their brains. Moreover, the taxi drivers'hippocampi continue to enlarge as they go on doing the job for
more years, suggesting that perhaps there's something we can do to reproduce the effect in the general
population.
Lead researcher Hugo Spiers was part of the team which 20 years ago found that, like birds and
squirrels, the taxi drivers'hippocampi gradually got bigger.Indeed, research has found for years that any
animal that requires a detailed spatial knowledge of their territory experiences growth in the hippocampus.
Spiers'team hopes to deal with Alzheimer's by studying the taxi drivers'brains. To collect more
information on the mechanisms()that cause the "brain gain",Spiers has asked thirty of London's
taxi drivers connected to an MRI machine to drive around on their routes. The machine will allow the
researchers to gather real time observations of the workings of the hippocampus."It's been a joy to help
scientists fight with the disease,"said taxi driver Robert Lordan.
28.What can we say about“The Knowledge”?
A.It lasts for a few minutes only.
B.It is usually held in London's busy streets.
C.It is a great challenge to people's memory.
D.It invites some residents in London to be judges.
29.What has been found about the taxi drivers'hippocampi?
A.They are more likely to be harmed.
B.They grow in the taxi drivers'careers.
C.They benefit from daily communication most.
D.They are poor at controlling short-term memory.
30.Why does the author mention the research on animals?
A.To imply the new study benefits the animal kingdom as well.
B.To point out that more studies on animals'brains are needed.
C.To show animals'hippocampi are very different from humans'.
D.To prove the use of certain knowledge influences brain development.
31.Why do the researchers observe the taxi drivers with an MRI machine?
A.To figure out who has the largest hippocampus.
B.To know how Alzheimer's develops in their brains
C.To find out how their hippocampi perform at work.
D.To test whether the special machine is effective.

Parenting styles have changed over the years in response to the rapid changes in the world.Whether it is
tapping technology or applying the best parenting practices to meet a parenting need, parents nowadays
generally invest more time in finding out how to best raise their children.
Modern parents often look to the Internet and social media for parenting advice. The availability of
resources has helped modern parents engage more in their children's development, both academically and
emotionally.Modern parents are also more eager to find out effective parenting methods to help them raise
disciplined and confident children.
A modern parenting style that has emerged is helicopter parenting, where parents are much too
focused on their children. They help children with tasks they're capable of doing on their own, like
selecting activities and friends for them,or calling their teachers about homework matters.Such a
parenting style can hold back the development of the children's ability to handle responsibilities
independently.Children might be ill-equipped with life skills such as doing laundry ()clearing
their plates or coping with their schoolwork.Always protecting children from failures may also prevent them
developing adaptability and acquiring skills like problem-solving.
On the other hand, parents in the past tended to monitor less.Children were given more control over
how to manage their schoolwork and choose their friends.Domestic helpers were also not the norm then,
hence children of the past were often expected to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for younger brothers
and sisters and managing housework.Living in the pre-Internet age, parents were less informed about
different parenting methods, and their parenting styles were guided more by their personalities, common sense
and friendly advice from the extended family and neighbors, rather than by social media influences or parenting
websites.
There is no one right way to raise a child. Each child is unique and should be raised differently by
parents who are present but not wandering, who are supportive but not controlling, and who protect but not
care too much.
32.What does the underlined word "tapping"mean in paragraph 1?
A.Employing.
B.Tracking.
C.Monitoring.
D.Identifying.
33.What is a distinctive characteristic of helicopter parenting?
A.Flexible.
B.Efficient.
C.Conventional.
D.Overinvolved.
34.What do we know about parents in the past?
A.They educated kids in a rigid way.
B.They overestimated their kids'independence.
C.They afforded kids more space for self-growth.
D.They tended to stay away from social activities.
35.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.How to raise all-round children.
B.How to enhance parent-child bonds.
C.How parenting modes have shifted over the years.
D.How information technology boosts people's lifestyles

Most people think that procrastination()is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely
put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our "slower"approach to getting tasks done.
I was the only procrastinator in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the "do it right
now"gift. They were always in a rush,as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline.Personally,I
preferred a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying,
“Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.”“No way!”I responded, confidently presenting my
research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they needed to solve a problem or commit to a
topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision could be beneficial. This was because our minds
continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to
more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done
was just as good as my sister's...or so I thought.
At school we'd been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment,my teacher
Mr.Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were
expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in
class. Not only would the winners receive extra credits, but the winning constructions would be proudly
displayed in the cafeteria."I have no clue how I could get it done,"my friend Nate sighed in despair.I
didn't say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety-but because I was not nervous at all.I loved hands-
on projects!Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria,I was fully convinced that I would
definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn't give it a second
thought for weeks.
