More specifically, the giving of gifts and the culture around them. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) immediately open the present. They want to see their reaction of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the giver for the gift but open it later in the giftee’s home. Another part I found different is the openness and directness of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, the practice is much more open in a bright red envelope. Finally, the monetary value of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel uneasy due to a sense of having to return the favor in the future to the giftee. People in different places have their own traditions. So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take. 11. How do giftees deal with a present in the writer’s home country? A. Open it secretly. B. Open it immediately. C. Open it in the giftee’s home. D. Open it in the gifter’s home. 12. What’s the usual way of giving money as a gift in the US? A. Put it in a card. B. Put it in a red envelope. C. Give it at the giftee’s house. D. Give it in front of many people. 13 Why is an expensive gift likely to make a Chinese giftee uneasy? A. Because of its high price. B. Because of its value in China. C. Because of the cultural difference. D. Because of the sense of returning the favor. 14. What is the writer’s advice on giving a gift? A. Pay attention to different traditions. B. Discuss out loud the expensive gift. C. Remember to open the gift in private. D. Avoid giving money directly to others. 15. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Gift-giving is meaningful all over the world. B. Gift-giving is different in China and the US. C. Money plays an important role in gift-giving. D Gifts make people happy on New Year’s Day. D Recently, a new study has uncovered the secrets of the world’s longest known migration (迁徙)—the migration of the painted lady butterfly (彩蝶). Migrations are journeys by large numbers of animals from place to place, usually because of changing seasons. Painted ladies are known to arrive in Europe from Africa each summer, but their numbers can change hugely, with a hundred times more in some years than others. Now, scientists have fully discovered their route (路线). Using data collected by trained volunteer butterfly recorders over many years, researchers from the University of Reading made sure that Europe’s painted ladies begin their lives in the grassy plains and woodlands of west Africa. Their journeys in spring can be anything from 3,700 to 4,300 miles. During their journeys, they fly across the Sahara Desert, into north Africa and across the Mediterranean Sea. Their total migration every year, which takes them back to west Africa to mate and lay eggs in winter, is twice as long. It’s believed painted ladies can fly for 40 hours without stopping. They top up their energy by feeding and resting during the night. The effects of weather at different stages of the butterfly’s journey explain why its numbers can change so hugely. For one thing, more rain means more plants for painted ladies which are very young to feed on. For another thing, helpful winds are needed to carry large numbers of painted ladies across the Mediterranean Sea. Professor Tom Oliver, from the University of Reading, said, “The research shows how the wild animals we see in the UK can cross national boundaries, like from the UK to Ireland. Therefore, protecting such animals needs strong international support.” 16. What mainly causes the migration of painted ladies? A. Need for water. B. Seasonal change. C. Different food. D. Human arrival. 17. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Why scientists started the research. B. When scientists discovered the route. C. Where the painted lady butterflies live. D. How the painted lady butterflies migrate. 18. How does good weather help painted ladies? A. It helps them get more water and fly longer. B. It helps them feel warmer and fly more quickly. C. It helps them get more food and fly more easily. D. It helps them feel happier and make more friends. 19. What does the underlined word “boundaries” mean in Paragraph 4? A. routes that connect two countries B. places that attract animals to migrate C. lines that mark the limits of countries D. countries that allow animals to stay in 20. What’s the best title for this passage? A Some secrets of Butterflies B. The Number of Butterflies C. Good Protection of Butterflies D. Amazing Migration of Butterflies 第二部分 语言知识运用(满分45分) 第一节:完形填空(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A During the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a man named Yang Shi. Sometimes, it can make you do things you don’t want to do just to fit in. Peer pressure is common in places where people are close together, like on social media or in classes. For example, you might feel like you have to cheat on a test because other students are doing it. Why does it happen? Because people want to be liked and keep up, so they sometimes do what others want them to do. Social media can make this worse because people want to get more likes and comments. There are ways to deal with peer pressure. It’s helpful to do some good things, like helping others, instead of just trying to be popular online. Learning to say no is a big part of dealing with peer pressure. It’s also important to have people you can talk to, like friends, family, or a teacher, when you feel pressured. In short, peer pressure is when others try to make you do things. It happens a lot, but there are ways to handle it by being strong and having support from others. Peer Pressure ______46______ social media ______47______ reasons to be liked ______48______ ______49______ ______50______ say no sometimes talk to others 第二节:书面表达(共1题,满分25分) 51. 假如你是李华,请阅读笔友David的邮件并回复,给他至少3条建议。词数100左右,首尾已给出,不计入总词数。 Dear Li Hua, How’s everything going?
