Have you dreamt of taking a flying taxi to the airport, or jumping over crowded city streets at rush hour, getting where you want to go far faster than you could in a car. You might be able to do these things in an air taxi sooner than you think.
An air taxi is something like a helicopter (直升机) that can carry people from place to place. Air taxis don’t need a long runway like planes do. 1
In June, the government of America agreed to allow a company called Joby Aviation to start testing their new air taxi. This is the first time they have tested a taxi that has been built in a factory. Before that, all their taxis were made by hand.
2 It created a program to fly people from their homes to the airport. Joby also expects their air taxis to provide a ride-sharing service. Just like you might order a car to pick you up, you could use an app to order an air taxi. Joby’s air taxis will be flown by a pilot, and can carry four other passengers.
3 The company expects to charge about $3 a mile at first. But over time, they hope to bring the price down to less than $1 a mile. 4 They think air taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they will still add noise and traffic to our skies.
It seems that air taxis will be part of the future of travel. 5 Governments need to make rules about where, when, and how these taxis can fly.
A.They can go straight up and down.
B.Some people have worries about air taxis.
C.The company hopes air taxis can start carrying passengers (乘客).
D.You will be able to order an air taxi on your smartphone.
E.But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become popular.
F.Joby says their air taxis are cheaper than helicopters.
Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, the world had only a few thousand people. These people moved (搬迁) from one place to another. They moved over the land (陆地), hunting animals for food.
No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their lives changed. They did not have to move houses any more. They could stay in one place and grow it. People began to live near each other, so the first village (村庄) grew. Many people came to work in the villages, and these villages became larger and larger.
Then people had machines, life in the villages changed again. People built factories (工厂). More and more people lived near the factories. So the villages grew into cities. Some of them grew very big. Today, it’s strange that some people are moving back to small villages. Can you tell me why?
1.How many people were there in the world long long ago?
2.What did the villages grow into after people built factories?
3.Why did people move from place to place long long ago?
4.Who knows when people learned about growing food?
5.In your opinion, Why are some people moving back to small villages?
Improvements in technology often happen overnight. Some gadgets get smaller and faster. Others are replaced (代替) by newer things like smartphones. Here are some old gadgets that people used to use. ①
Do you have a landline at home? These are phones that people plug (插入) into their living room walls. Mobile phones didn’t use to be so popular at that time, so most families had a landline. But landlines only worked at home. What did people do when they were outside and needed to call someone? They looked for a pay phone! Then, most people had their own mobile phones and many homes no longer had landlines. ②
People today store plenty of information online, or on SD cards. But in the 1980s and 1990s, people used to use floppy disks. The first floppy disks were large, expensive, and not very useful—each disk could store just 175 KB of information! Later, floppy disks got smaller and better. But even the best ones could only hold 1.44 MB.You would need three or four disks just for one song, and about 22,000 disks to match the storage (储存空间) available on a 32 GB phone! ③
It’s easy to take photos today. People often have thousands just on their phones! But photos used to cost much, and people took fewer of them. To take a photo, you had to buy a roll of film. This allowed you to take up to 30 photos. After finishing the roll, you left it at a shop. The shop developed the photos to make them be seen, which you could collect after a few days.
Technology changes all the time, and the gadgets we use today will one day be old. What do you think will be next to disappear (消失)?
1.What is the title of each paragraph?
a. Goodbye Disks b. Music to my Ears c. Picture This
d. Call Me e. Film Development
A.①—d; ②—b; ③—e B.①—d; ②—a; ③—c
C.①—c; ②—a; ③—b D.①—c; ②—b; ③—e
2.What can we get from the passage?
A.No homes had landlines now.
B.Floppy disks could store much information.
C.You could take 40 photos with a roll of film.
D.The improvements in technology change people’s life.
3.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Changing Phones B.The Gadgets of Tomorrow
C.The Gadgets We are Using D.The Tools We Used to Use
Transportation Changes: Past and Present
Part 1: Read and Explore
Transportation is an important part of people's daily life. It helps us travel from one place to another easily. Over the past few decades, China has witnessed great changes in transportation.
In the past, transportation was quite simple and slow. Most people traveled on foot or by bicycle for short trips. For long-distance travel, they usually took trains or buses. However, the trains were not fast at that time. A trip from Beijing to Shanghai might take more than 20 hours. Bicycles were very popular because they were cheap and easy to park. But they also had shortcomings—people couldn't ride them in bad weather, and they got tired easily after long rides.
Now, transportation has become much more convenient and fast. We have many kinds of transport tools to choose from. High-speed trains are a great pride of China. The high-speed train from Beijing to Shanghai only takes about 4.5 hours! Many families have their own cars, so they can travel freely on weekends. Besides, subways are widely used in big cities. They can avoid traffic jams and take people to their destinations quickly. We also have planes that can take us to different countries in a short time.
But the development of transportation also brings some problems. More cars mean more air pollution. Traffic jams often happen during rush hours. To solve these problems, our government has taken some actions, such as developing electric cars, building more subway lines and encouraging people to take public transport.

1.—Does your father drive to work?
—He ________. But now he rides a bike because riding bikes is greener.
A.had to B.used to C.has been D.would like be
had to不得不;used to过去常常;has been已经;would like be错误表达。根据“But now he rides a bike because riding bikes is greener.”
2.—There is only ________ food in the kitchen.
—It’s OK. Very ________ friends will come for dinner.
A.a few; a little B.a little; a few C.a little; few D.little; few
【答案】C

A.more crowded B.crowded
C.more convenient D.convenient
more crowded更拥挤;crowded拥挤的;more convenient更方便;convenient方便的。根据“I live next to a Huitong supermarket.”
4.My father ________ drive his car to work, but now he doesn’t.
A.used B.use to C.is used to D.used to
考查used to的用法。used to过去常常做某事;be used to习惯做某事。根据“My father...drive his car to work, but now he doesn’t.”
5.—My sister and I will go to Shanghai for a trip tomorrow.
—Really? _______.
A.That’s very strange B.That’s too bad C.I don’t think so D.Have a nice trip
【答案】D
