Hilde Lysiak became famous across the United States for reporting on difficult news stories. Now Hilde has written a book telling her own story and sharing some of the challenges she faced. Hilde started her own newspaper called Orange Street News (OSN) and she did the writing, her sister took pictures, and her father helped her organize and print the newspaper. Following the rules taught by her father, she researched and reported stories of her town in the newspaper. In 2016, OSN suddenly became famous when a murder happened in town, and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it. However, some people criticized her parents for allowing her to report on something as unpleasant as a murder. Others criticized Hilde for “pretending to be a reporter”. Hilde was upset by the complaints, so she responded with a YouTube video. She said, “I want to be taken seriously. I’m sure other kids do, too.” In 2019, she made the news again when a law enforcement (执行) officer threatened to arrest her for filming him. Hilde knew her rights as a reporter were protected under the Constitution. Later, the town apologized to Hilde for the officer’s actions. Hilde’s activities as a reporter have made her famous and she has earned several awards. In April, the book Hilde on the Record came out, in which Hilde tells her own story, both the good parts and the sad parts. Later, the town apologized to Hilde for the officer’s actions. Hilde’s activities as a reporter have made her famous and she has earned several awards.(希尔德知道她作为记者的权利受到宪法的保护。 根据文章最后一段“In April, the book Hilde on the Record came out, in which Hilde tells her own story, both the good parts and the sad parts. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big planteater, it largely shapes the forest and savanna (稀树草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息地). It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbrush, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants at various stages of growth that attract a variety of other planteaters. Take the rainforests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed planteaters to move around and for small planteaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. 8. What is the passage mainly about? A. Disappearance of African elephants. B. The eating habit of African elephants. C. The effect of African elephants’ search for food. D. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. 9. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean? A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state. C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions. 10. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? A. They are home to many endangered animals. B. They provide food mainly for African elephants. C. They result from the destruction of rainforests. D. They are attractive to different kinds of plant-eating animals. 11 The passage is developed mainly by __________. A. giving examples B. describing the changes in space order C. pointing out similarities and differences D. showing the effect and then explaining the causes 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第一段“Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big planteater, it largely shapes the forest and savanna (稀树草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息地). (与其他动物不同,非洲象在很大程度上是其环境的建设者。作为大型食草动物,它在很大程度上塑造了它所生活的森林和稀树草原环境,从而为生活在栖息地的数百万其他动物设定了生存条件)”以及最后一段“What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. (科学家们现在担心的是,非洲象已经成为濒危物种。科学家们说,如果大象消失了,许多其他动物也将从广阔的森林和稀树草原中消失,这将极大地改变和恶化整个生态系统)”可知,本文主要介绍了非洲象对非洲生态系统的重要性,特别是其觅食行为对环境的影响以及非洲象面临灭绝的现状。因此,本文的主要内容是“非洲象觅食行为的影响”。故选C项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段“As a big planteater, it largely shapes the forest and savanna (稀树草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息地). (作为大型食草动物,它在很大程度上塑造了它所生活的森林和稀树草原环境,从而为生活在栖息地的数百万其他动物的生存setting the term)”可知,非洲象在很大程度上塑造了它所生活的森林和稀树草原环境,进而为生活在栖息地的数百万其他动物设定了生存条件,所以“setting the terms”意为“决定条件”。故选D项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants at various stages of growth that attract a variety of other planteaters. (这导致在热带雨林和覆盖部分非洲稀树草原的林地中出现了许多开阔地。在这些开阔地上,有许多处于不同生长阶段的植物,吸引着各种各样的其他食草动物)”可知,开阔地吸引了各种各样的食草动物。故选D项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbrush, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. (正是大象对食物的巨大渴望使它成为环境的破坏者和栖息地的重要建设者。在它每天不断寻找300磅植物的过程中,它杀死小树和灌木丛,并从大树上扯下树枝。这导致在热带雨林和覆盖部分非洲稀树草原的林地中出现了许多开阔地)”以及第三段“Take the rainforests for example. D As the weather turns colder in some parts of the world, signs of autumn begin to appear. At this time of the year depending on your location, you may also see a familiar flower: chrysanthemums ( 菊花). We often call them “mums,” for short. In parts of the United States, many people use chrysanthemums as decorations. The flowers sit next to pumpkins for Halloween, October’s famous holiday. But then the mums are thrown away along with rotting jack o’lanterns. This yearly tradition bothered plant expert Jessica Damiano. In a recent article, she wanted to know why people simply threw away their mums. So, she asked some of her neighbors in Long Island, New York. Everyone had the same answer: They thought the flowers were annuals — flowers that only last for one season. Damiano explained that there are annual and perennial (多年生的) mums. Perennials come back for several growing seasons. Garden chrysanthemums, she adds, are actually perennials. Annual chrysanthemums are often sold in stores as potted gift plants. Special plant stores usually sell perennial mums. If the plants are not labeled at a store, Damiano said to look at the leaves. The large, flat leaves of perennial mums have deep cuts around the edges. The narrow leaves of annuals do not. Perennial mums are hardy flowers. But they cannot survive freezing temperatures. They also cannot survive extreme summer heat. So, that means about half of the United States is good for growing mums. Perennial chrysanthemums come from China. Kaifeng, a city in China’s Henan province, is famous for its mums. Each year, the city holds a popular festival to celebrate the flowers. Chrysanthemum festivals are also held in other countries — like Pakistan, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and the United States, to name a few. Chrysanthemums come in shades of orange, red, rust, pink, purple, yellow, cream, and white. Some can grow to nearly one meter in height. They reach their mature size in about three years. In warmer climates, they bloom again in spring. 12. Why did people throw away their chrysanthemums? A. They don’t like the mums. B. They don’t think the mums can flower again. C. They mistake the mums as lanterns. D. They throw away the mums by accident. 13. How can we tell the differences between annual mums and perennial ones according to Damiano? A. By observing the leaves. B. By looking at the pot. C. By asking others. D. By referring to books. 14. What kind of climate is suitable for mums’ growth? A. Freezing. B. Extremely hot. C. Warm. D. Wet. 15. Where are the perennial mums originally from? A. Pakistan. B. Germany. C. Japan. D. China. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第四段“Everyone had the same answer: They thought the flowers were annuals — flowers that only last for one season.(每个人都有相同的答案:他们认为这些花是一年生的——花只能持续一个季节)”可知,人们扔掉菊花是因为他们认为菊花是一年生的花,只能持续一个季节。 根据第六段“If the plants are not labeled at a store, Damiano said to look at the leaves. The large, flat leaves of perennial mums have deep cuts around the edges. The narrow leaves of annuals do not.(如果植物没有在商店贴上标签,Damiano说要看叶子。多年生植物大而扁平的叶子边缘有很深的切口。一年生植物的狭窄叶子没有)”可知,可以通过观察叶子来区分一年生和多年生菊花。故选A。 根据倒数第三段中“But they cannot survive freezing temperatures. They also cannot survive extreme summer heat.(但它们无法在冰冻的温度下生存。 Every child faces friendship problems at some time, in some way, but generally speaking, there are three main problems that keep children from being part of a group. ____16____ Kids who do too little in social situations could be ignored by the other kids and may have a hard time making friends. I was never tidy — my side of the room was always a mess, covered with books, shirts, and single socks. Kim, though, was very organized. She labeled all her drawers and even used colors to mark her class schedule. She arranged her pens by color and folded her sweaters by season; everything had its own place. Our different habits often annoyed each other. One evening in mid- October, things got really bad. After evening study, I kicked off my basketball shoes carelessly. One shoe accidentally slid under Kim’s bed. When she found it, she turned bright red with anger. She picked up the shoe and threw it hard toward my side. It hit my desk lamp (台灯) and knocked it over. The lamp fell to the floor, and the bulb (灯泡) broke into pieces on the pile of T-shirts I planned to fold. I jumped up, shouting at her for being so rude. She shouted back, complaining about my messy habits. We both rushed to the door, each wanting to be the first to slam it shut. But just as my hand touched the doorknob, the dorm phone on Kim’s desk let out a sharp ring. The sudden noise cut through our anger, making us both freeze mid-step. We hesitated for a moment — anger still burning, but curiosity about who was calling softening our urgency. I went back to my bed, still angry. Kim answered the phone. From her short, shaky replies, I could tell something was wrong. After hanging up, she climbed into her bed, pulled the covers over herself and started crying. The room suddenly went quiet — a heavy silence filled with a new kind of unease. As Kim’s quiet crying reached my ears, something inside me changed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was so focused that I didn’t notice Kim had been watching me cleaning. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 As Kim’s quiet crying reached my ears, something inside me changed. My anger faded away, replaced by a sense of guilt. I thought about how my messy habits had annoyed her countless times, and this time my carelessly thrown shoe was the last straw. I hesitated for a moment, then got up slowly. I picked up the broken bulb carefully and cleaned the pieces of glass from the T-shirts. Then I tidied my side of the room — folding the clothes, stacking the books, and pushing the shoes under the bed neatly. I wanted to do something to comfort her, even if it was just cleaning up my mess. I was so focused that I didn’t notice Kim had been watching me cleaning. When I finally looked up, our eyes met. Her eyes were red from crying, but there was no anger in them anymore. “I’m sorry for throwing your shoe and breaking the lamp,” she said softly. I shook my head and replied, “It’s my fault. I should have been more tidy and respected your space.” We talked for a long time that night, sharing our feelings about living together. From then on, I tried to keep my side of the room clean, and Kim learned to be more tolerant of small messes. Our friendship became stronger because of this misunderstanding. 词汇激活 行为类: ①消失:fade away/disappear/die away ②整理:tidy/arrange/put in order ③对视:our eyes met/ we gazed into each other’s eyes 情绪类: ①愤怒:anger/rage/fury ②宽容的:tolerant/forgiving/lenient 【点睛】【高分句型1】I wanted to do something to comfort her, even if it was just cleaning up my mess.(运用了even if引导的让步状语从句) 【高分句型2】We talked for a long time that night, sharing our feelings about living together.(运用了现在分词sharing作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 宁夏六盘山高级中学 2025-2026学年第一学期高一英语第二次月考测试卷 试卷类型:A、B卷 学科:英语 测试时间:120分钟 满分:150分 注意事项: 1. 1. Hilde Lysiak became famous across the United States for reporting on difficult news stories. Now Hilde has written a book telling her own story and sharing some of the challenges she faced. Hilde’s father was a reporter for New York Daily News. When she was young, he often took her to work with him, and she developed a strong interest in news stories and reporting. When she was 8. I’m sure other kids do, too.” In 2019 she made the news again when a law enforcement (执行) officer threatened to arrest her for filming him. She talks honestly about the challenges she’s faced and some of those challenges came from other people, but the others came from herself struggling to figure out who she was as she grew older. 4. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. A Young Reporter Tells Her Own Story B. A Young Reporter Starts Her Own Newspaper C Challenges Faced by an American Young Reporter D. OSN, a Newspaper Reporting on Difficult News Stories C The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. In their natural state the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. B The eating habit of African elephants. 11. The passage is developed mainly by __________. A. giving examples B. describing the changes in space order C. pointing out similarities and differences D. showing the effect and then explaining the causes D As the weather turns colder in some parts of the world, signs of autumn begin to appear. A. Pakistan. B. Germany. C. Japan. D. One evening in mid- October things got really bad. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
