When I’m exhausted and tired out, I struggle through my day, attending to only the essentials. “Taking care of your body and mind — by getting enough sleep, whole foods and movement — sets a foundation in place,” says Dr Swart, “from which you have far greater ability and energy to build your bigger dreams and projects.” Tip 1 __41__ : Try Yoga Nidra, a guided lying-down meditation (冥想), also known as “yogic deep sleep”, which eases you into complete mental and physical relaxation. For me, just 20 minutes in the middle of my day is a game-changer, especially if I haven’t had enough sleep. There are lots of free practices online. My favourite is Richard Miller’s iRest, available on YouTube. CAUTION: While Yoga Nidra can be a great way to relax think twice if you’re feeling physically uncomfortable, as the position may worsen your discomfort. Tip 2 WALK: Take a 35-minute walk, ideally before 8 am. Exposure to bright light first thing improves our mood and increases our energy, as does movement. This is especially important in winter, when lower light levels mean our bodies produce more melatonin (which makes us feel sleepier), as well as less serotonin, a mood-boosting chemical. CAUTION: Walking is not recommended if you’re dealing with an injury or are feeling extremely exhausted, as it might put additional stress on your body. Tip 3 COOK: Visit a farmers’ market and see what you're drawn to — perhaps the orange rounds of tomatoes, or the deep green leaves of kale (羽衣甘蓝). If you’re not sure what to cook with your purchases, follow your heart, or search online (or the recipes in your cookbooks) for ideas. As you cook, feel the process: it could be the feel of your knife cutting through potatoes, the smell of sausage, or the sight of dark-purple vegetables transformed into a red soup. CAUTION: Cooking is not the best option if you’re feeling rushed or distracted, as it might cause frustration instead of relaxation. Tip 4 CONNECT: Friendship is fundamental to our physical and mental wellbeing. Connect, via phone or in person, with those friends who are your supporters; the ones who believe in you and are cheering for you to realise your dreams. And dare to share these with them. CAUTION: If you’re emotionally drained or needing time to recharge, it might not be the best moment to have deep or demanding conversations. 40. What is the passage mainly intended to do? A. To introduce some useful health products. B. To present four stages of achieving dreams. C. To provide guidance on how to care for ourselves. D. To highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle. 41. Which of the following words best fills in the blank of the passage? A. PRACTICE. B. REST. C. TRAVEL. D. NURSE. 42. John is a customer service manager of a shopping mall. For a whole day, he answered numerous phone calls and rushed to different spots in the mall to handle various emergencies and customer complaints. After a day of work, he felt tired out, hoping to enjoy his own personal life. Which two tips may work for John best? A. Tip 1 and Tip 3. B. Tip 1 and Tip 2. C. Tip 3 and Tip 4. D. Tip 2 and Tip 4. (四) (2025年徐汇区一模) Ostriches versus emus: what’s the difference? Ostriches and emus have much in common. They are both absolutely enormous. At 2.5m tall and weighing 130kg, ostriches are the biggest of all living birds, and emus are close runners up. Besides, both are incapable of flight, with wings that serve only as balancing aids while running. The differences are perhaps not as obvious as you might expect, considering they’ve been evolving independently for about 50 million years. Certainly, their plumage (羽毛) is different. Male ostriches are black-white-and-pink birds, while the slightly smaller females are more uniformly brown. Male and female emus are more similar with shaggy, brown plumage that hangs like a grass-skirt, and a sweep of blue skin on the neck. Should you ever need to identify them from a footprint, an ostrich has two toes on each foot, while an emu has three. And an ostrich’s egg is creamy in colour, while an emu’s is green. (Ostriches lay the biggest eggs of any living bird, though, relative to body size, they are the smallest.) The reproductive lives of both are rather unusual. Among ostriches, many females will lay eggs in a single nest that is tended by a resident pair. And emus avoid sex-role conventions – it’s the females that do the courting (求偶) and the males that do the bulk of the parenting. Ostriches and emus live on different continents (Africa and Australia, respectively). They are, however, closely related. Both are members of a group called the ratites (鸵鸟目), which also includes other large, flightless (and funny) species, such as the rheas of South America and the cassowaries of New Guinea, but also the kiwis of New Zealand, which are much smaller, but no more capable of flight (and no less comical). New Zealand was also once home to the extinct moas, which were only slightly smaller than the elephant birds of Madagascar (also extinct), the biggest birds that have ever lived, at well over 3m tall. Then there are the tinamous of the Americas. On the face of it, these grouse-like birds look nothing like ratites, and yet skeletal and genetic similarities suggest they are the closest living relatives of the moas. Intriguingly, tinamous can fly, which suggests that the other ratites became flightless only after they all went their separate ways. 36. Which of the following is a key physical difference between an ostrich and an emu that could be used for identification? A. The density of their feathering. B. The structure of their wings. C. The number of toes on their feet. D. Their overall height and weight. 37. What can be inferred from the passage about the ability to fly within the ratite group? A. All ratites, including kiwis, have completely lost the ability to fly. B. The tinamous suggest that the common ancestors of ratites could likely fly. C. Moas and elephant birds became extinct because they could not fly. D. Emus and ostriches are the only ratites that use their wings for balancing. 38. Based on the overall passage, what is the author’s main purpose in comparing ostriches and emus? A. To argue that they are more different than they are similar. B. To explain the uniqueness of the group of flightless birds. C. To provide a simple guide for telling the two species apart. D. To detail the evolutionary history that led to their flightlessness. (五) (2025年松江区一模) Pickleball is now one of the fastest-growing sports, and it’s tons of fun. It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net at the center. Each end of the court has a kitchen (the non-volley zone; volley is a hit of the ball before it touches the ground). Follow these simple rules and I bet you’ll be out playing doubles pickleball in no time. #2:the ball must bounce once on each side before either team can volley Before any player can hit a shot out of the air, the ball must bounce once on each side. So, if your partner is serving and you start up at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position, because the returning team can hit a shot right at you. If you react with a volley, it’s considered a fault and you’ll lose the point because you don’t let the ball bounce first on your side. (*A point is a unit of scoring that can only be won by the serving team.) #3:each point continues until a fault After the serve, play continues until a rally is won either by someone hitting a winning shot or a fault is committed. A fault ends the rally. In pickleball, there are some basic fault types: The ball lands in the kitchen. The ball lands out of bounds(behind the baseline or outside the sideline). The ball hits the net and falls on your side. The ball bounces twice on one side before the player can return it. (To Be Continued) 40. When your partner is serving, you are not advised to start at the kitchen because ________. A. your opponent is likely to gain a point B. the ball won’t bounce on the other side C. your partner is likely to be hit D. you probably won’t gain a point 41. According to #3,which pictures show faults? A. ①② B. ②③ C. ②④ D. ③④ 42. Where may you find this article? A. In a journal on sports science. B. From a profile of the sports’ inventor. C. At the “How-To” section of a sports website. D. On an official document of sports rule clarification. Plants are crucial to human survival, even when there’s no sunlight. But dealing with darkness is second nature for someone like Howard Levine, chief scientist for NASA’s ISS Research Office. Space might be an extreme example, but enclosed, dark habitats exist on the ground too. Keeping your houseplants alive in windowless rooms or during short winter days can be a challenge. Luckily, there are strategiees to help, even when their sunny source of energy is limited. Mini indoor greenhouses Darkness usually means a decline in natural heat. In Iceland, horticulturist James McDaniel uses geothermal (地热的) heat in his greenhouses to protect his plants. Each of the structures has holes beneath that stretch deep to a pocket of steaming — hot water, he explains. “You can channel that steam into the pipes through the greenhouse and use natural airflow to keep the temperature a set range. “But you don’t need volcanic energy to run a mini indoor greenhouse, which can be as simple as putting a cabinet or shelf together. A heater can add warmth, although you might want to pair it with a dampness regulator to keep from drying your houseplants out. For individual plants, glass covers can trap heat from limited sunlight and also enclose water vapors, which protect plants from the air conditioner in the summer and the heater in the winter. Grow lights Plant grow lights provide an easy and accessible energy boost in dark spaces. These specialized light rays have different features, colors, and prices. LEDs, for instance, are the cheapest and most energy-efficient option, using about a third of the electricity of old lightbulbs. While most devices stick to a warm white band, plants respond differently to various color wavelengths. In Levine’s experiments on Earth, red light worked well for the thin flowering plants Arabidopsis. But in the ISS’s weightless environment, they stretched into funny shapes until he started adding blue lights. Bright surfaces If electricity is a limiting factor, you can try to reflect light with mirrors. Even brightening up your space with white decor, like a light-colored tablecloth, will cast a little glow onto your plants. The makeup of your indoor garden will dictate how much brightness you need to add, Levine explains. Some plants including lettuce and tomatoes need more light than those like Arabidopsis. Therefore, research the plants’ native ranges to learn how much sunshine they’d naturally get. 40. If a gardener is planning to set up a mini indoor greenhouse in a room with limited sunlight, which of the following setups would be most effective for maintaining a suitable environment for plant growth? A. A cabinet with a heater and a dampness regulator. B. A shelf with glass covers for natural airflow. C. A greenhouse with holes connected to a geothermal heat source. D. A greenhouse with steam pipes for controlling volcanic energy. 41. The primary purpose of using grow lights for plants in dark environments is_________ A. to provide additional heat B. to create a decorative effect C. to supply energy through light D. to absorb light using special devices 42. According to the article, which method may work well for reflecting light to help plants grow? A. Using dark-colored tablecloths. B. Painting walls white. C. Replacing lightbulbs with LED lamps. D. Removing mirrors from the garden. Every year, millions of animals set out on a long journey in search of food, shelter, and mating opportunities. Often traveling thousands of miles, these animals push the limits of endurance. Multigenerational relay Perhaps one of the most famous migrations is the multigenerational round trip of the monarch butterfly. Each year, millions of monarch butterflies leave Canada and fly south to Mexico, where they gather to survive the winter. When spring arrives, the monarchs start their return journey north. The population goes through three to five generations before reaching its destination. The Great Migration Wildebeest take the crown for the most dramatic migration. Wildebeest live in huge groups of over one million individuals, along with thousands of zebras and gazelles. During the dry season, this giant herd (兽群) migrates in search of fresh grass and water. It is a round-trip that spans two countries: Tanzania and Kenya. The herd moves as a great group. Individuals must keep up or risk being hunted by the lions and crocodiles that gather to hunt. Whales on the move Humpback whales are one of the largest animals on Earth, weighing up to 36,000 kilograms. These giants spend their summers at feeding grounds in cold, nutrient-rich waters that support plenty of small fish. In winter, they migrate to warmer waters to raise their young whales and avoid predation (捕食) by killer whales. It is a journey that can take over 8,000 kilometers each way, making it the longest migration of any mammal on Earth. 42. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. A Miracle of Animal Migration B. The Challenges of Animal Migration C. The Struggle for Survival in the Wild D. Incredible Journeys in the Animal World 43. As an animal lover, you can learn ________ from the passage. A. humpback whales travel to cold waters in winter to raise the young B. the wildebeest migration takes place within the borders of Tanzania C. monarch butterflies complete their round-trip migration in a single generation D. the wildebeest herd is often followed by predators such as lions and crocodiles 44. What do the three animals’ migration have in common? A. They all complete their round-trip migration within a year. B. Their migratory behaviors are related to seasonal changes. C. They all overcome lots of difficulties to travel to warmer places. D. Their migrations are primarily to escape from natural predators. (十二) (2026年奉贤区一模) 1. As we mature, experience and schooling teach us useful things, and we get woke. Then, year by year, we slip back into mental weakness. That’s the picture most of us have of intelligence. Unfortunately, it’s stupid. Research reveals that each period of cognitive (认知的) development offers learning strategies as well as balances between opposing strategies. It is that combination of “aha” (when expressing sudden insight)and “duh”(when showing evident stupidity in learning) that actually makes humans truly intelligent. It, in other words, shapes the way we learn, think, judge, find and solve problems. 0-18 months A baby brain forms 1 million new nerve connections each second, helping her to develop emotions, motor skills, attachments, and working memory. At 11 months, she can already form assumptions about how the world works. At 18 months, she has a sense of self. 2-5 years When it comes to learning abstract concepts, preschoolers beat adults. At 4 years old, 66 percent of calories are headed to her brain—fuel for the exploration and creative thinking that define this period. By the time she finishes preschool, her gray matter has increased four times in size. 6-11 years The brain of a 6-year-old has reached 90 percent of its adult size. Weeding out nerve connections speeds up as the brain gets rid of unused connections. The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) starts to develop more, resulting in longer attention durations, and an increased reliance on language and logic to learn. 12-24 years Adolescence marks a return to the nerve flexibility and plasticity that characterized her preschool years. But she’s not living in a protected context. A reliance on the amygdala—a center for emotions, urges, and instinctive behaviors—might result in trademark “risk-taking. ” 25-59 years By the time she reaches adulthood, prefrontal control is at its peak. A developed frontal part helps her plan for the future and control her urges, but there’s evidence that creativity and mental flexibility takes a big hit. Learning anything surprising? Also a lot harder. 60+years Bring on short-term-memory loss, diseases related to nerve degeneration, and declines in conceptual reasoning. Still, other cognitive abilities continue to grow. Skills involving vocabulary, math and verbal comprehension are among them. 40. The word “It” in paragraph 1 most probably refers to ________. However, there are several important details that need to be sorted out before you book your trip. Running into problems during a tour can really affect your vacation experience. Fortunately, travel expert Dilvin Yasa has shared her practical tips for getting the most out of your group tour. Budget Wisely When planning your group tour, budgeting is a key factor, as these trips are usually not all-inclusive. According to Dilvin Yasa, it is crucial to carefully read the itinerary (行程计划) before you book and add up all the extra costs to get the real figure. She said, “Many people assume that the price they see is the total cost, but that’s often not the case.” Extra costs on a group tour might include lunches, dinners, entrance fees to attractions, and additional activities. So, make sure to include these possible expenses in your budget, which will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises later on. Understand the Geography Yasa emphasized the importance of understanding the geography of your tour. She advised against quickly moving between different destinations, as tight schedules might stop you from fully enjoying your trip. “Use Google Maps to see how long you’ll be traveling during each part of the tour.” she suggested. This step is particularly important if you plan to visit multiple destinations within a short period. “Knowing the travel time between stops can help you manage your expectations and ensure you have enough time to enjoy each place,” Yasa explained. Keep Some Cash handy While most of your tour should be paid for before you leave, Yasa emphasized the importance of being prepared for unexpected expenses. When traveling to more remote areas or visiting small food stalls and markets, don’t assume that every place will accept card payments. “Make sure you have some local money with you at all times,” Yasa advised. She also suggested exchanging some money before you leave, so you have it readily available upon arrival. By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable group tour experience. “The key is to be well-prepared and informed,” Yasa concluded. 40. Dilvin Yasa advises tourists to check Google Maps before departure to remind them _________. A. to confirm the distance and travel time between stops B. to find the cheapest transportation to reduce the budget C. to search and list the most popular attractions in advance D. to check the time to visit each spot based on opening hours 41. Preparing local cash is recommended during a group tour, because _________. A. most group tour fees need to be paid in cash B. exchanging money requires high service fees C. it is easier to add up the extra expenses upon arrival D. card payments may not be accepted in small markets 42. Which of the following best states the main purpose of the article? A. To teach travelers how to avoid being cheated on tour. B. To guide readers in drawing up a low-budget tour in advance. C. To show how preparations can improve a group-tour experience. D. To advise customers on how to file a complaint about unsatisfactory tour. (十六) (2026年闵行区一模) What is Generative AI? A. PRACTICE. B. REST. C. TRAVEL. D. NURSE. 42. 【答案】36. C 37. B 38. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要对比鸵鸟与鸸鹋的异同,进而介绍鸵鸟目鸟类的特征、演化及近亲物种等相关知识。 【36题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Should you ever need to identify them from a footprint, an ostrich has two toes on each foot, while an emu has three. (如果你需要通过脚印来识别它们,鸵鸟每只脚有两个脚趾,而鸸鹋有三个。)”可知,脚的脚趾数量是区分两者的关键生理差异,可用于物种识别。故选C项。 【37题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Intriguingly, tinamous can fly, which suggests that the other ratites became flightless only after they all went their separate ways. 【答案】40. A 41. C 42. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了在光线不足环境下种植植物的方法,包括小型室内温室的搭建、生长灯的使用及反光表面的应用等策略。 【40题详解】 细节理解题。根据Mini indoor greenhouses部分“A heater can add warmth, although you might want to pair it with a dampness regulator to keep from drying your houseplants out. 【答案】42. D 43. D 44. A. humans’ ongoing brain science research B. the mix of intelligence and unintelligence C. the common understanding of intelligence D. humans’ ability to make sensible judgements 41. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Preschool children aged 2 to 5 have abstract learning abilities close to those of adults. B. A six-year-old’s brain is almost adult-sized with its prefrontal cortex fully developed. C. Adults between 25 and 59 find it much tougher to learn unexpected new knowledge. D. People over 60 experience partial memory loss and constant growth in math skills. 42. Suppose you are a 17-year-old hoping to boost creativity before university. Which of the following schedules would best match your brain’s current features according to the passage? A. Start a gap year to tour three countries along a fixed route. B. Do the same writing drill to improve writing skills each day. C. Join an AI workshop to pilot various original robot projects. D. Take a part-time tutoring job to earn extra money regularly. 【答案】40. B 41. C 42. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了人类大脑从出生到老年不同阶段的认知发展特点。 【40题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“That’s the picture most of us have of intelligence. Unfortunately, it’s stupid. Research reveals that each period of cognitive (认知的) development offers learning strategies as well as balances between opposing strategies. It is that combination of “aha” (when expressing sudden insight)and “duh”(when showing evident stupidity in learning) that actually makes humans truly intelligent.(这是我们大多数人对智力的看法。 根据“25-59 years”部分中的“By the time she reaches adulthood, prefrontal control is at its peak. A developed frontal part helps her plan for the future and control her urges, but there’s evidence that creativity and mental flexibility takes a big hit. Learning anything surprising? Also a lot harder.(当她达到成年时,前额叶控制达到顶峰。发达的前额叶部分帮助她规划未来和控制冲动,但有证据表明,创造力和思维灵活性受到很大打击。学习任何令人惊讶的东西?也难得多了。)”可知,25 - 59岁的成年人发现学习意想不到的新知识要困难得多。故选C项。 【42题详解】 推理判断题。根据“12-24 years”部分中的“Adolescence marks a return to the nerve flexibility and plasticity that characterized her preschool years. But she’s not living in a protected context. A reliance on the amygdala—a center for emotions, urges, and instinctive behaviors—might result in trademark “risk - taking.(青春期标志着神经灵活性和可塑性的回归,这是她学龄前时期的特点。 (十四) (2026年普陀区一模) Four to Follow: Athletes to Watch out for From a US swimming star to French cycling’s “champion of champions”, these four will be on the hunt for medals.
