I began the bus trips when I was seven. Back then, we lived at my grandparents’ place; finances were tight since my dad had retired and hadn’t secured steady employment yet. But my mom strived to create lasting, cherished memories that would shape my outlook on life, though I didn’t fully grasp the depth of her wisdom until years later.
We headed to the nearest bus stop once or twice a week. For a minimal fee, it was possible to purchase a ticket that allowed people to embark on all the buses throughout an entire day. My mom had deciphered this cost-effective system perfectly, and she’d take me to a diverse range of destinations, turning ordinary afternoons into adventures.
Among our most frequented places was the mall in Carlsbad, which boasted a large glass clock tower at its center. The tower featured intricate gears and mechanisms that rolled balls along rails, bounced them onto drums and ramps, and then lifted them back up with tiny elevators-a sight that drew crowds of children all day long. We’d go window-shopping, not to buy anything, but to soak in the atmosphere and do some people-watching. On other occasions, we’d take the bus to Strand Beach, where we collected sand dollars and shells as souvenirs. Every trip we took felt like a grand expedition, and I was deeply grateful to my mom for making that tough period so enjoyable. Eventually, my dad found a steady job, and we moved to a lovely home in the countryside.
My mom’s efforts went beyond distracting me from our struggles. She inspired me to stay observant and appreciate a world that was accessible without costing much. More importantly, she taught me that regardless of where I was, and what I was going through, there was something I could smile about somewhere.

“I write to find out what I’m thinking,” wrote the great American journalist John Dos Passos. Anyone engaged in writing understands this truth: the act of writing transforms half-formed ideas into precise, logical thought. What sounds coherent (有条理的) when spoken often appears weak and illogical when committed to paper.
A recent MIT study provides convincing scientific evidence for this claim. Researchers used wearable brain scanners to compare students who wrote essays independently with those using AI assistance. The findings were clear: AI-assisted writers “consistently underperformed at brain, verbal, and behavioural levels.” They demonstrated that we need to write in order to think deeply.
This research emerges at a critical historical moment for literacy. Childhood reading has reached record lows, with nearly half of British adults not reading a single book last year. Adult literacy is declining or making no progress across most OECD countries. Notably, average IQs have begun to decline since the 1980s, along with reasoning and problem-solving abilities — a trend that is unlikely to be random.
Walter Ong’s influential work “Orality and Literacy” illuminates why writing is essential. He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revolution. Oral cultures must “think memorable thoughts”, relying on rhyme, emotion, and cliché (陈词滥调) to preserve knowledge. Writing, by contrast, allows for precise, complex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and developed into logical arguments.
In our digital age, no technology has surpassed the complicated architecture of the book. While the internet offers fragmented (碎片化的) information, books provide rich context and sustained logical connections. Reading is an active process that demands engagement and concentration — it is essentially thinking in dialogue with the text.
As our culture becomes increasingly dominated by short-form videos and attention-fragmenting content, we risk losing the capacity for complex reasoning. Reading and writing form the foundation of serious thought — a habit that unites history’s greatest minds. Before we yield our cognitive development to screens and algorithms, we must carefully consider what we might be sacrificing.
28.What is the function of writing according to John Dos Passos?
A.Revealing flaws in speech. B.Recording spoken words.
C.Organizing thoughts. D.Ensuring fluency.
29.What is the key advantage of writing over oral cultures?
A.It ensures greater objectivity.
B.It makes for logical statements.
C.It preserves knowledge longer.
D.It requires “memorable thoughts”.
30.Why does the author describe reading as “thinking in dialogue with the text”?
A.To show its interactive feature.
B.To contrast with online reading.
C.To underline its logical structure.
D.To highlight its cultural relevance.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards people’s reasoning capacity?
A.Dismissive. B.Concerned. C.Critical. D.Skeptical.

A wheeled robot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs, moving awkwardly. Powered by conventional electricity via plug or battery, these simple robotic creations would be unremarkable, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are controlled by a living entity (实体) : a king oyster mushroom.
By growing the mushroom’s mycelium (菌丝体) into the robot’s hardware, a team led by Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the environment by using electrical signals made by the mushroom and its sensitivity to light.
The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid robotics who seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or insects with artificial components to make partly living and partly engineered entities.
There’s still a long way to go before biohybrid robots go beyond the lab, but researchers hope one day robot jellyfish may explore oceans, sperm-powered robots may be able to deliver fertility (肥沃) treatments and cyborg cockroaches could search for survivors in the wake of an earthquake.
“Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use, understand, and control to help our artificial systems work better,” said Shepherd, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University.
The team began by growing king oyster mushrooms in the lab from a simple kit ordered online. The researchers chose this species of mushroom because it grows easily and quickly. They cultivated (培育) the mushroom’s mycelium, which can form networks that, according to the study, can sense, communicate and transport nutrients.
The team found it challenging to engineer a system that could detect and use the small electrical signals from the mycelia to command the robot. “You have to make sure that your electrode (电极) touches in the right position because the mycelia are very thin,” said lead author Anand Mishra. “Then you culture them, and when the mycelia start growing, they wrap around the electrode.”
32.What is special about the two robots in the first paragraph?
A.They can control living creatures. B.They can make various movements.
C.They are powered by king oyster mushrooms. D.They are partly mushroom and partly machine.
33.What does the author want to show by giving the examples in paragraph 4?
A.The future possibilities of biohybrid robots.
B.The seriousness of the environmental issues.
C.The limitations of biohybrid robots beyond the lab.
D.The advantages of biohybrid robots over conventional ones.
34.What did the team find difficult when engineering the robots?
A.Wrapping the electrode with the mycelia.
B.Arranging the electrode in the right order.
C.Developing a system to cultivate the mycelia.
D.Positioning the electrode accurately on the mycelia.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.When Nature Meets Technology B.How Technology Transforms Nature
C.King Oyster Mushrooms: the Magic of Nature D.Biohybrid Robotics: the Key to Social Development

How to Improve Debating Skills
Debating is a subjective judgment, so debaters may apply different methods at different times. 36 . They can help you get your points across clearly and effectively, leaving little room for your opponents to question and inspiring responses and participation of the audience.
Strategic Arguments
Organize your thoughts before you speak. Before you start, think through the chronological order (时间顺序) in which you want to present your statements. Then, start with a powerful statement and support your comments with research and viewpoints from professionals in the field. 37 . So the listeners and opponents will examine what might happen if they choose not to support your arguments.
38
Focus on ways you might improve your body language. Signs of confidence might include a firm standing posture with few movements. Make eye contact with your opponent when possible, but don’t stare him down. Stand straight, so your opponent doesn’t think you’re bored or lazy. Signs of nonconfidence might include running your hands through your hair, touching your face and staring at your notes without looking up or tapping your pencil on the podium.
Respectful Tones
39 . Always avoid whispering, complaining and yelling since they inform others you’re overwhelmed by emotion and can’t present logical arguments. Increase your volume slightly to stress extremely important details. When responding to your opponent’s arguments, use a firm, respectful tone.
Opposing Viewpoints
Address your opponent’s viewpoints head-on and don’t beat around the bush. Prove to the judges and the audience that you are willing to analyze viewpoints from all angles. You might politely mention flaws in your opponent’s line of reasoning or address factual errors. You can also agree with part of your opponent’s argument. 40 .
On the whole, how to persuade the audience, invoking intelligent responses and enthusiastic participation are debating skills worth mastering.
A.Appropriate Gestures.
B.Confident Body Language.
C.Conclude your argument with convincing details.
D.An effective debate is organized, strategic and persuasive.
E.However, some skills generally apply to all forms of debate.
F.Meanwhile, show ways that the argument doesn’t hold up as a whole.
G.Create and maintain a tone that is respectful and easy to listeners’ ears.

It was a sunny morning in Eastern Australia. The sky was blue, and the sea looked calm and clear. A group of tourists, including a 12-year-old Japanese boy named Hiro and 57-year-old Brian Reeves, got on a boat for a trip. Hiro was very excited — this was his first time to visit Australia’s coast, and he brought a small waterproof camera to take photos of colorful fish under the water.
After sightseeing for two hours, the captain stopped the boat. “The water is safe here — you can swim for a while!” he said. Many tourists jumped in, and Hiro quickly followed. He swam a little too far from the boat, focusing on his camera. He dived down gently, trying to take a photo of a small orange fish. He was so busy that he didn’t notice the time passing.
Only a few minutes later, the captain suddenly shouted loudly. “Shark! Get back to the boat now!” He pointed to a dark shape moving fast in the water — it was a Great White Shark, about seven meters long. The swimmers heard the shout and swam back quickly. But Hiro was still under the water, taking photos, and he didn’t hear anything.
When Hiro came up for air, he froze. The shark’s dark fin (鳍) cut through the water just meters away, circling him slowly. Its huge mouth opened wide, showing rows of sharp teeth. Hiro’s eyes grew big — he could even see the shark’s rough skin shining in the sun. It inched closer, and the water around him felt colder.
Hiro threw away the camera in panic and started screaming. His hands shook so hard that he could barely move his arms. He tried to kick towards the boat, but his legs felt heavy. Tears mixed with seawater on his face. On the boat, his parents, who now wished they had jumped in with Hiro, cried and banged(击打)the side, but no one could reach him in time. Hiro thought he would never see his family again.

D

M: Billy Ray Harris was homeless. Every day, sitting along the street, he occasionally heard the sound of one coin or two dropping into his cup. One day, the noise was louder than usual. If Billy had looked up, he’d have seen a woman putting some coins and even a diamond ring in the cup. But he didn’t. A little later, he found the ring in the cup. He just went straight to a jeweler’s to change it for money. But then he thought about his grandfather, who had brought him up to always do the right thing, and he kept the diamond ring. Two days later, to find the ring, the woman approached him. She introduced herself and asked if he’d found anything unusual in his cup. Billy pulled out the ring from his pocket and returned it to the woman.
Then the woman told her husband the story and they raised money for Billy online. With their help, Billy lives in his own home instead of the street. That’s not all. Thanks to the news report, he is reunited with his older brother, Edwin Harris who he had been unable to find for 27 years.

B.Collected souvenirs while watching people.
C.Admired the clock tower and enjoyed the scene.
D.Learned about gear mechanisms with other children.
27.What is the main message the author intends to convey?
A.Travel broadens the mind.
B.A penny saved is a penny earned.
C.When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
D.Those who settle for less rarely achieve more.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.C
根据第一段“Back then, we lived at my grandparents’ place; finances were tight since my dad had retired and hadn’t secured steady employment yet. (那时候,我们住在祖父母家;因为爸爸退休了,还没有找到稳定的工作,家里经济很拮据。)”可知,作者一家住到祖父母家是为了节省生活开支。故选A项。
根据第二段“For a minimal fee, it was possible to purchase a ticket that allowed people to embark on all the buses throughout an entire day. My mom had deciphered this cost-effective system perfectly, and she’d take me to a diverse range of destinations (花很少的钱,就可以买到一张全天可以乘坐所有公交车的票。妈妈完美地deciphered这个划算的办法,然后带我去各种各样的地方。)”以及语境可知,这里指妈妈是摸清了这个省钱的公交票规则。“deciphered”在此处与“figured out”(弄明白、搞清楚)意思相近。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段“Among our most frequented places was the mall in Carlsbad, which boasted a large glass clock tower at its center. The tower featured intricate gears and mechanisms that rolled balls along rails, bounced them onto drums and ramps, and then lifted them back up with tiny elevators-a sight that drew crowds of children all day long. We’d go window-shopping, not to buy anything, but to soak in the atmosphere and do some people-watching.(我们最常去的地方之一是卡尔斯巴德的一家商场,商场中央矗立着一座宏伟的玻璃钟楼。钟楼内部精密的齿轮机械装置推动钢珠沿轨道滚动,在鼓面与斜坡弹跳穿梭,最后通过微型升降机将钢珠送回顶端——这般景象终日吸引着成群结队的孩童驻足。我们时常浏览橱窗不为购物,只为沉浸在那份热闹氛围中观察往来行人。)”可知,作者在购物中心会欣赏钟楼,享受那里的氛围。故选C项。
27.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“She inspired me to stay observant and appreciate a world that was accessible without costing much. More importantly, she taught me that regardless of where I was, and what I was going through, there was something I could smile about somewhere. (她激励我保持敏锐的观察力,去欣赏这个不用花很多钱就能接触到的世界。更重要的是,她教会我,无论身处何地、经历何事,总有一些值得微笑的事情。)”可知,文章传递的核心思想是在困境中也要积极寻找生活的乐趣,与“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.(当生活给你柠檬时,就做杯柠檬水。)”表达的“苦中作乐、积极面对困境”含义一致。故选C项。
C
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.B
根据第一段中的““I write to find out what I’m thinking,” wrote the great American journalist John Dos Passos. Anyone engaged in writing understands this truth: the act of writing transforms half-formed ideas into precise, logical thought. (美国伟大记者约翰·多斯·帕索斯写道:“我写作是为了弄清楚自己在想什么。”任何从事写作的人都明白这个道理:写作行为能将尚未成型的想法转化为精准、有条理的思考。)”可知,约翰·多斯·帕索斯认为写作的作用是梳理思想,将模糊想法转化为清晰思考。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revolution. Oral cultures must “think memorable thoughts”, relying on rhyme, emotion, and cliché (陈词滥调) to preserve knowledge. Writing, by contrast, allows for precise, complex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and developed into logical arguments. (他认为读写能力推动了古希腊的知识革命。口头文化必须“思考易记的内容”,依靠韵律、情感和陈词滥调来保存知识。相比之下,写作能够呈现精准、复杂的表述,这些表述可被审视、回顾,并发展成有条理的论点。)”可知,与口头文化相比,写作的关键优势是能形成有条理的表述。故选B项。
30.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“While the internet offers fragmented (碎片化的) information, books provide rich context and sustained logical connections. Reading is an active process that demands engagement and concentration — it is essentially thinking in dialogue with the text.(互联网提供碎片化信息,而书籍则提供丰富的背景和连贯的逻辑关联。阅读是一个需要参与和专注的主动过程——本质上是与文本对话式的思考。)”可知,作者将阅读描述为“与文本对话式的思考”,是为了体现阅读需要读者主动参与、与文本互动的特点,即突出其互动性。故选A项。
根据第六段中的“As our culture becomes increasingly dominated by short-form videos and attention-fragmenting content, we risk losing the capacity for complex reasoning.(随着我们的文化越来越被短视频和分散注意力的内容主导,我们面临失去复杂推理能力的风险。)”以及“Before we yield our cognitive development to screens and algorithms, we must carefully consider what we might be sacrificing.(在我们将认知发展交给屏幕和算法之前,我们必须仔细思考可能会牺牲什么。)”
D

36.根据上文“Debating is a subjective judgment, so debaters may apply different methods at different times.(辩论是一种主观判断,因此辩论者可能在不同的时间使用不同的方法)”以及下文提到一些辩论的技巧,故E项(然而,有些技巧通常适用于所有形式的辩论)承上启下,空后的They指代E项中的some skills,E项符合语境。故选E项。
37.根据上文“Before you start, think through the chronological order (时间顺序) in which you want to present your statements. Then, start with a powerful statement and support your comments with research and viewpoints from professionals in the field.(在开始之前,考虑一下你想要按照时间顺序来陈述你的陈述。然后,以强有力的陈述开始,并以该领域专业人士的研究和观点来支持你的评论)”中Before you start和Then可知,此处介绍辩论的过程,设空处应承接上文,且设空处的内容应能引出空后内容,C项(用令人信服的细节结束你的论点)符合语境,设空处及空前内容为空后描述情况发生的前提。故选C项。
38.根据本段内容“Focus on ways you might improve your body language. Signs of confidence might include a firm standing posture with few movements. Make eye contact with your opponent when possible, but don’t stare him down. Stand straight, so your opponent doesn’t think you’re bored or lazy. Signs of nonconfidence might include running your hands through your hair, touching your face and staring at your notes without looking up or tapping your pencil on the podium.(关注你可能改善肢体语言的方法。
39.根据后文“Always avoid whispering, complaining and yelling since they inform others you’re overwhelmed by emotion and can’t present logical arguments. Increase your volume slightly to stress extremely important details. When responding to your opponent’s arguments, use a firm, respectful tone.(总是避免耳语,抱怨和大喊大叫,因为他们告诉别人你被情绪所淹没,不能提出合乎逻辑的论点。
40.根据上文“Address your opponent’s viewpoints head-on and don’t beat around the bush. Prove to the judges and the audience that you are willing to analyze viewpoints from all angles. You might politely mention flaws in your opponent’s line of reasoning or address factual errors. You can also agree with part of your opponent’s argument.(正面回应对手的观点,不要拐弯抹角。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Just then, Brian stepped in without hesitation. He tore off his shirt and shoes, and jumped into the sea. He splashed the water hard with his hands and shouted as loud as he could. The shark turned its head — it forgot about Hiro and swam towards Brian. Hiro’s legs stopped shaking. He swam fast to the boat, where his parents pulled him up tightly. The tourists acted fast too. They held out a rope to Brian. Just as the shark got closer, Brian grabbed the rope and was pulled onto the boat.
Hiro’s parents walked over to Brian with grateful tears in their eyes. “Thank you! You saved our son’s life!” they said, bowing deeply. Brian smiled and told them he was happy to see Hiro safe and sound. The tourists clapped loudly — they all called Brian a hero. Someone gave him a towel to dry off, and another handed him a cup of water. Brian drank it slowly, feeling the warmth spread through his body. He was tired, but satisfied with himself because he acted on his belief that helping others can make the world a safer, warmer place.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our campus website. After careful consideration, I prefer “Growing Pains” as the new column.
As high school students, we all face various challenges, such as academic pressure, friendship issues, and self-doubt. This column can provide a platform for us to share our troubles and solutions. It helps us realize that we are not alone in our struggles, which can reduce anxiety. Besides, exchanging experiences here can teach us how to handle difficulties better, which is beneficial for our personal growth.
I believe “Growing Pains” will be very popular among students.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use, understand, and
control to help our artificial systems work better,"said Shepherd,a professor of mechanical and aerospace
engineering at Cornell University.
The team began by growing king oyster mushrooms in the lab from a simple kit ordered online. The
researchers chose this species of mushroom because it grows easily and quickly. They cultivated (the
mushroom's mycelium,which can form networks that,according to the study,can sense,communicate and
transport nutrients
The team found it challenging to engineer a system that could detect and use the small electrical signals
from the mycelia to command the robot."You have to make sure that your electrode (touches in the right

It was a sunny morning in Eastern Australia. The sky was blue, and the sea looked calm and clear.A group
of tourists,including a 12-year-old Japanese boy named Hiro and 57-year-old Brian Reeves,got on a boat for a
trip.Hiro was very excited-this was his first time to visit Australia's coast, and he brought a small waterproof
camera to take photos of colorful fish under the water.
After sightseeing for two hours, the captain stopped the boat."The water is safe here-you can swim for a
while!"he said. Many tourists jumped in,and Hiro quickly followed. He swam a little too far from the boat,
focusing on his camera. He dived down gently, trying to take a photo of a small orange fish.He was so busy that
he didn't notice the time passing.
Only a few minutes later, the captain suddenly shouted loudly."Shark!Get back to the boat now!"He
pointed to a dark shape moving fast in the water-it was a Great White Shark, about seven meters long. The
swimmers heard the shout and swam back quickly. But Hiro was still under the water, taking photos, and he didn't
hear anything
When Hiro came up for air,he froze. The shark's dark fin cut through the water just meters away,
circling him slowly. Its huge mouth opened wide, showing rows of sharp teeth.Hiro's eyes grew big-he could
even see the shark's rough skin shining in the sun.It inched closer, and the water around him felt colder.
Hiro threw away the camera in panic and started screaming. His hands shook so hard that he could barely

move his arms.He tried to kick towards the boat, but his legs felt heavy.Tears mixed with seawater on his face.
On the boat, his parents, who now wished they had jumped in with Hiro, cried and banged()the side, but no
one could reach him in time.Hiro thought he would never see his family again.
