【原文】Good morning, honorable judges and teachers. I am excited to have the opportunity to present my science fair project to you today. Thank you for taking the time to listen. For this year’s science fair, I created a new project. My project focused on solar power and how it can be used in daily life, because I am very interested in finding ways to use clean and environmentally friendly power. To study that, I built a small solar-powered car and tested its performance compared to a regular battery-powered car. Then, I tested both cars in different weather conditions to see how well they worked. After several tests, I found that the solar car was able to run for longer periods when it was sunny, but the battery-powered car was more reliable on cloudy days. Through this project, I learned a lot about the importance of clean energy and got inspired to continue exploring clean energy solutions in the future.

Any good recipe needs an ingredient list, a cooking method, and if it’s particularly successful, there will be a personal touch describing how the recipe was developed through repeated tests until it was just right. It is a balance of these elements in recipes that ensures good cookbooks are the most important part of any kitchen.
Good communication is just like making a good dish. This is where The Art of Explanation: How to Communicate with Clarity and Confidence steps in. Written by journalist Ros Atkins, it is a recipe book for storytelling, made to be roughly looked through. The “ingredient list” is information required to communicate effectively. The methodology is given according to the different settings.
In this book, Atkins presents a seven-step method for giving a great explanation, from getting the main information to giving information in an easy-to-understand way. Reviewing a book of this nature is a test of how well I have understood the information in this guide. The most important parts of the method include: gathering information effectively; communicating it clearly; and achieving the delivery. But, for me, it is not this method that makes this book interesting but the “personal touch” stories, which draw on Atkins’ life, that give this book its edge.
I was most drawn to the practical examples in The Art of Explanation, because it offered a chance to know more about Atkins’ career, from starting out as a graduate to taking a new approach to explanation on a BBC’s program, Outside Source. As Atkins puts it himself, “Tell a good story, so people will pay attention to your every word.” Stories, and how they are told, are at the heart of journalism. It is no surprise that the stories told in the book are particularly attractive, such as how Atkins began his journalism career as a junior reporter in South Africa. These stories make The Art of Explanation worth reading, moving it from a textbook to something that works like a well-written cookbook.
24. Why does the author mention recipes in the first paragraph?
A. To explain what a good recipe should be like.
B. To compare them to effective communication.
C. To encourage readers to make dishes themselves.
D. To stress the importance of the personal touch in a book.
25. What makes The Art of Explanation interesting?
A. The ingredient list. B. The seven-step method.
C. The personal stories of Atkins. D. The way to deliver the message.
26. What does the author think of the book?
A. It should be read word for word.
B. It is written in an easy-to-understand way.
C. The method introduced in the book is boring.
D. The way that it tells stories is quite worth learning.
27. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education. B. Health. C. Entertainment. D. Science.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. A

When chain store Jewel opened at Singapore’s Changi Airport six years ago, it changed the idea of what an airport could be. Instead of being just a stop on the way to somewhere else, it became a destination itself. For this reason, many airports began to think how to be local.
Many new airports try to reflect their surroundings. Their architecture may take inspiration from local mountains, rivers, or coastlines. Yantai Penglai International Airport in China, for example, uses soft curves (曲线) and natural materials to “echo the landscape” around it.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) expanded this idea to its Terminal 1. “Even if you’re not going into the city, you get a snapshot of what San Francisco and the Bay Area are all about,” says spokesperson Doug Yakel. From local food to Bay Area artwork and quiet rest areas, the terminal offers a preview of the city’s lifestyle.
Some airports go a step further by attracting people who are not flying at all. Portland International Airport (PDX) did this as early as the 1980s with a shopping hall. Its newest terminal, opened in 2024, was designed to feel like “a path through the forest,” with wide views of Portland’s natural scenery. Parking data already shows a rise in visitors who come simply to look, eat, or shop.
Others hope to follow. Denver International Airport is trying to copy Changi’s success. Yet its remote location — 20 miles from downtown — remains a major barrier. For now, few locals see it as a place to visit for leisure. Whether it can be truly turned into a local destination remains an open question.
28. What inspires the design of Penglai International Airport?
A. The city images. B. The food culture.
C. The natural scenes. D. The public artwork.
29. What does the underlined word “snapshot” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Preview. B. Map.
C. Sample. D. Postcard.
30. How does PDX attract people who are not flying?
A. By providing more free parking.
B. By introducing more new brands.
C. By offering a forest-like experience.
D. By expanding the original terminal.
31. What can be inferred about Denver International Airport?
A. Its construction will be started in no time.
B. Its design is lacking in local cultural elements.
C. The local people look forward to its rebuilding.
D. The distant location may reduce its appeal to locals.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了机场如何通过融入当地特色来吸引旅客和当地人,成为旅游目的地。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Their architecture may take inspiration from local mountains, rivers, or coastlines. Yantai Penglai International Airport in China, for example, uses soft curves (曲线) and natural materials to “echo the landscape” around it.(它们的建筑可能从当地的山脉、河流或海岸线中汲取灵感。例如,中国的烟台蓬莱国际机场采用柔和的曲线和天然材料,以“呼应”其周围的景观)”可知,蓬莱国际机场的设计灵感来自自然景观。故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Even if you’re not going into the city(即使你不进入这座城市)”和“From local food to Bay Area artwork and quiet rest areas, the terminal offers a preview of the city’s lifestyle.(从当地美食到湾区艺术品和安静的休息区,航站楼提供了一个城市生活方式的预览)”可知,此处指即使你不进入这座城市,你也能从航站楼里对旧金山和海湾地区有个大致的了解,snapshot意为“预览,大致印象”,与Preview意思相近。故选A。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Some airports go a step further by attracting people who are not flying at all. Portland International Airport (PDX) did this as early as the 1980s with a shopping hall. Its newest terminal, opened in 2024, was designed to feel like “a path through the forest,” with wide views of Portland’s natural scenery. Parking data already shows a rise in visitors who come simply to look, eat, or shop.(有些机场则更进一步,吸引那些根本不乘飞机出行的人。早在20世纪80年代,波特兰国际机场(PDX)就打造了一个购物大厅来吸引人群。其最新落成的航站楼于2024年启用,设计风格让人仿佛“漫步于森林小径”,可饱览波特兰的自然风光。停车数据显示,单纯前来观光、用餐或购物的访客数量已有所增加)”可知,PDX通过提供类似森林的体验来吸引不乘飞机的人。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Denver International Airport is trying to copy Changi’s success. Yet its remote location — 20 miles from downtown — remains a major barrier. For now, few locals see it as a place to visit for leisure.(丹佛国际机场正试图复制樟宜机场的成功。然而,它的偏远位置——距离市中心20英里——仍然是一个主要障碍)”可知,丹佛国际机场的偏远位置可能会降低其对当地人的吸引力。故选D。

Are worms the heroes we didn’t know we needed? Silent, slimy and wriggling (扭动), you might think that worms are good for nothing except bait (鱼饵) on the end of a fishing rod. However, there is more to the humble worm than meets the eye.
The British naturalist Charles Darwin said that no other animal has “played such an important part in the history of the world as these lowly organized creatures”. They have lived on Earth for 600 million years and have even survived five mass extinctions. So, what makes worms so great?
Earthworms move the earth, and this is why farmers love them. As they travel, they expose the soil to the fresh air by loosening, mixing and oxygenating it, which increases the ground’s ability to hold and drain water. They are effectively a small but very efficient farming tool. But it’s not just earthworms that deserve praise.
In 2022, a group of scientists at the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research isolated enzymes (酶) found in waxworm saliva (唾液). These are plastic-eating enzymes, which can decompose polyethylene, a very common plastic that normally degrades over many years. It’s hoped that by producing these enzymes on an industry-level scale, we will have a more environmentally friendly way to reduce plastic pollution.
And worms are even inspiring the building industry. Bloodworms are small sea creatures that dig into the mud of the ocean floor. Scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have been studying their jaws, which are made up of 10% copper proteins and are so strong that they last the worm’s entire five-year lifespan. Because of this research, engineers may start using the jaws as inspiration for the design and manufacture of materials like concrete.
So, next time you see a worm, show it a little respect. They really are changing the world!
32. Why does the author raise a question at the beginning?
A. To discuss the limited use of worms.
B. To compare worms with other animals.
C. To emphasize the complexity of worms.
D. To challenge the prejudice against worms.
33. Why do farmers love earthworms?
A. They deserve praise. B. They facilitate farming.
C. They decompose plastic. D. They prevent pollution.
34. How do bloodworms influence the building industry?
A. They provide a new building material.
B. They are used in construction equipment.
C. Their jaws offer ideas for building design.
D. Their jaws are made from copper material.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The biological evolution of worms.
B. The various scientific uses of worms.
C. The environmental impacts of worms.
D. The underestimated importance of worms.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. D

推理判断题。根据第一段“Are worms the heroes we didn’t know we needed? Silent, slimy and wriggling (扭动), you might think that worms are good for nothing except bait (鱼饵) on the end of a fishing rod. However, there is more to the humble worm than meets the eye.(蠕虫是我们未曾意识到的英雄吗?它们安静、黏滑且扭动,你可能会认为蠕虫除了作为鱼竿上的鱼饵外毫无用处。然而,这种不起眼的蠕虫远比表面看起来更有价值)”可知,文章开头通过提问引发读者思考,随后指出人们对蠕虫的普遍偏见,并进一步揭示蠕虫的重要作用,旨在挑战这种偏见。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Earthworms move the earth, and this is why farmers love them. As they travel, they expose the soil to the fresh air by loosening, mixing and oxygenating it, which increases the ground’s ability to hold and drain water. They are effectively a small but very efficient farming tool.(蚯蚓移动土壤,这就是农民喜欢蚯蚓的原因。当它们移动时,它们通过松动、混合和充氧使土壤暴露在新鲜空气中,这增加了土壤蓄水和排水的能力。它们实际上是一种小而高效的农具)”可知,农民喜欢蚯蚓是因为它能松土、增加土壤的蓄水和排水能力,对农业有帮助,故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have been studying their jaws, which are made up of 10% copper proteins and are so strong that they last the worm’s entire five-year lifespan. The Secret to Taking Great Notes
Taking good notes is a key part of the learning process. However, merely writing down what you hear word-for-word is ineffective. Here are some proven strategies to transform your note-taking.
One of the most popular and structured systems is the Cornell Method, developed for and widely taught at Cornell University. ____36____ This physical layout guides your thinking process. During class, take notes in the main section. After class, use the cue column to write keywords or questions. Finally, write a brief summary of the entire lesson at the bottom of the page. This multi-step process is scientifically proven to significantly improve long-term memory retention.
For those who think in images and connections, Mind Mapping is a visual way to organize information. Start with the main topic in the center and draw branches out for key subtopics. ____37____ You can use colors, symbols, and arrows to make connections. This method is especially beneficial for visual learners as it shows the relationships between concepts, making complex topics easier to grasp.
Regardless of the method you choose, the core principle is active engagement. Don’t just passively record information. ____38____ Engage with the material by paraphrasing the speaker’s points. This forces you to process and understand the information on the spot.
Of course, the best method is the one that works for you. ____39____ You might use the Cornell Method for history lectures, which are dense with facts, but a Mind Map for brainstorming an essay topic. You might even combine different elements from various methods to create your own personalized system.
____40____ Review your notes periodically within 24 hours of taking them. This short, spaced repetition is one of the most powerful ways to move information from your short-term to your long-term memory, solidifying your learning and making exam preparation much less stressful.
A. Then, add smaller branches for specific details.
B. Therefore, it is popular among university students.
C. Ultimately, it’s crucial to review your notes afterward.
D. Experiment with different techniques to find your favorite.

I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was excited. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】
With only three days left, my pressure increased gradually. I brainstormed, then invited Jake and Lily home. Opening my grandfather’s diary, I pointed at the faded photo of his class. “Your camera can save the moment for the future,” I told Jake, whose eyes suddenly sparkled. Then I suggested he photograph every corner of the school like “time travelers”. Meanwhile, Lily was engaged in my grandfather’s love letter, eager to bring hidden stories back to life. I organized layouts, combining historical accuracy with creativity. Laughter replaced frustration as the clock ticked.
On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. We stood by the blackboard as everyone went through the pages. They examined the brochure carefully, with their fingers tracing the photos, narratives and timelines which a connected three generations of graduates. Faces held surprise. Mr. Dow tapped our shining names: “This isn’t just for the anniversary—it’s about how its spirit lives through students’ cooperation.” That afternoon, seeing our brochure displayed, we knew combined talents created what none could alone.

D. Science.

D

E. This means you can paraphrase the content in your own words.
F. Instead, focus on summarizing the main idea in simple elegant words.
G. It divides your paper into a cue column, a notes section, and a summary area.
