A sunflower’s life begins with a seed. Plant the seed under the soil (泥土). With enough water and sunlight, the seed will sprout (发芽) in about one week. When the sunflower grows up out of the soil, its roots grow down. These roots absorb water and food from the soil, helping the sunflower to grow. A stem grows higher above the ground. Water and food go up through the roots, through the stem, and into the leaves.
Thirty days after the plant comes out of the ground, the flower of the sunflower plant begins to grow. The flower is round with yellow petals (花瓣).
The sunflower uses sunlight in a special way. The leaves of the sunflower turn sunlight into energy (能量) for the plant. When leaves make the energy, they make oxygen, too.

Chen Kaiyin from Beijing pays 2,000 yuan and “adopts (领养)” a panda at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. The zoo will use the money to buy food for its animals. As for Chen, she can learn about the panda’s daily life online and go to the zoo for free. She can also have the chance to look after the animal.
Animals like golden monkeys and tigers are also on the adoption list, according to the zoo’s WeChat account. Each animal has its own profile including (包括) a photo, its age, and personality. People can adopt the animals in their own name, in the name of their family or school.

Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Suddenly, the tomato starts to scream (尖叫)! This thing would never really happen. But a new study showed that plants make sounds when they are stressed.
Scientists in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record (记录) the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 59 times every hour. The third group only made sounds once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany told CNN.
