A
Some of the World’s Finest Stained Glass (彩色玻璃) Artworks
La Sainte-Chapelle, France
While many say that Paris’ must-see cathedral is Notre-Dame de Paris, Sainte-Chapelle should also be on the list. Louis Ⅸ ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world’s finest stained glass windows.
The Chicago Cultural Center, the USA
While the Windy City might not house the nation’s winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world’s most eye-catching displays of stained glass. Today’s Chicago Cultural Center, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-foot-tall Tiffany glass dome (圆屋顶) which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.
Erawan Museum, Thailand
The Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks. All of them are displayed within the building’s three floors, which are said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents on Earth, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.
Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech Republic
While the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. The artwork is quite fit for Prague, the city in which the stained glass is displayed. After all, it is the modern-day Czech Republic that dreamy bohemians (放荡不羁的艺术家) came from.
21. Which of the following has the longest history?
A. Erawan Museum. B. La Sainte-Chapelle.
C. Saint Vitus Cathedral. D. The Chicago Cultural Center.
22. Where should you go if you want to see the earth-themed stained glass?
A. France. B. The USA. C. Thailand. D. Czech Republic.
23. What is special about the stained glass in Prague?
A. It goes well with the city. B. It is built by Louis IX.
C. It is the largest of its kind. D. It is donated by many travelers.

B
In a recent game of pickleball, my teammate and I were falling far behind other teams. It was her turn to serve. We were both standing behind the baseline, paddles(球拍) up in ready position, when she nodded at me and said, “In it to win it.”
“Really?” I looked at her, surprised by her use of a catchy expression that was new to me. My inner self was never ready to accept even the tiniest suggestion that we should be trying to win the game.
In my life off the pickleball court, I enjoy yoga, folk dancing—anything but games with winners and losers, and I always prefer to be a observer rather than a participant in the world of sports.
Then pickleball came along. Suddenly, I didn’t want to be an observer any longer. I wanted to be a player myself. Like many people, I was first drawn to the game simply as a safe COVID-19 activity. Playing outdoors with people in my neighborhood allowed me to break out of social isolation(隔离).
But my addiction to the game comes from the sport’s low barrier of entry. The equipment isn’t particularly expensive. It’s a relatively easy game to learn, and a participant doesn’t need to be especially strong, tall or fast. Little wonder that everyone can now be seen throwing a green, orange or yellow plastic ball with holes in it across a net.
Pickleball is the first game I’ve ever wanted to win. I think it’s because of the excitement I feel when I hit an unreturnable ball down the middle of the court and score a point. Participating in a sport myself rather than cheering for others provides real proof that I can still work hard to achieve goals.
So, I’ve made a long-term commitment to it. I am embracing the game as my pickleball buddies embrace me. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to socialize while, doing something active. In that playful space of the court, I am facing directly my fears of winning and losing. In the meantime, doing something outside of my comfort zone feels magical. Now I wonder what contests I might be brave enough to enter next.
24. Why was the author surprised by what her teammate said in the recent game?
A. She thought her teammate was too weak. B. She hadn’t considered winning or losing.
C. She didn’t know what her teammate meant. D. She misunderstood the rules of the game.
25. What is the main reason for the author’s love for pickleball?
A. It is what she is good at. B. It allows her to make new friends.
C. It is affordable and accessible. D. It has many health benefits.
26. How has the author benefited from playing pickleball?
A. She has overcome her fears of competitive sports. B. She has realized her own limitations.
C. She has become a more energetic person. D. She has recognized her talents for sports.
27. What does the author plan to do?
A. Become a professional athlete. B. Recommend pickleball to more friends.
C. Explore some extreme sports. D. Continue playing pickleball.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第二段最后一句“My inner self was never ready to accept even the tiniest suggestion that we should be trying to win the game.(我的内心从来没有准备好接受哪怕是最微小的建议,那就是我们应该努力赢得比赛)”可知,作者对队友的鼓励下意识是抗拒的,因为她没想过比赛的输赢,故选B。
根据第五段中“But my addiction to the game comes from the sport’s low barrier of entry. The equipment isn’t particularly expensive. It’s a relatively easy game to learn, and a participant doesn’t need to be especially strong, tall or fast.(但我对这项运动的迷恋来自于这项运动的低门槛。设备不是特别贵。这是一个相对容易学习的游戏,参与者不需要特别强壮、高或快。)”可知,匹克球运动真正吸引作者的地方是它入门门槛低,装备不贵又容易上手,故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Participating in a sport myself rather than cheering for others provides real proof that I can still work hard to achieve goals.(自己参加一项运动,而不是为别人加油,这证明了我仍然可以努力实现目标)”及最后一段“I am facing directly my fears of winning and losing.(我直面对输赢的恐惧)”可知,打匹克球让作者意识到自己可以努力去实现目标,也帮助她克服了对输赢的恐惧心理,故选A。
根据最后一段第一句“So, I’ve made a long-term commitment to it.(所以,我对它做了一个长期的承诺)”可知,作者是打算继续打匹克球的,故选D。
C
Can dogs see colors?
Man’s best friend is colorblind, but, luckily, his survival does not depend on the ability to see colors. His sharp sense of smell compensates for his inability to see color, and enables him to tell the differences between things.
Lots of scientific tests on dogs support the conclusion that they live in a colorless world. The tests done mainly focused on the dogs’ responses to colors for food. Dogs could not tell the difference between one color, a signal for food, and other colors that were not for food. Similar tests that were done on cats produced similar results, which caused scientists to conclude that they, too, are colorblind and live in a gray world.
The inability of most animals to see colors, from an evolutionary (进化的) standpoint, is quite simple to understand. Many colorblind animals have dull-colored coats, hunt for or look for food in the dark of night. Their other senses have developed to the point where the lack of color vision in no way weakens them. For them, life in a colorless world is neither a difficulty, nor a threat to their survival.
The only animals, other than man, which scientists can say for sure have color vision are monkeys and apes. Both can be trained to open a colored door, behind which is food, and man can be trained to open a refrigerator door of any color!
28. The underlined phrase “compensates for” probably means ________.
A. be different from B. make up for
C. depend on D. give in to
29. According to ________, scientists found that dogs and cats are colorblind.
A. what food they intend to eat B. their sharp sense of smell
C. an evolutionary standpoint D. the reaction to colors for food
30. Except for ________ all the following animals can tell apart different colors.
A. lions B. humans C. monkeys D. apes
31. Which of the following is NOT true about colorblind animals?
A. They often have dull-colored coats.
B. They usually hunt for food in the dark of night.
C. They can survive without any threat.
D. Their other senses may be very sensitive.
B 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第一段中“His sharp sense of smell compensates for his inability to see color, and enables him to tell the differences between things. (它敏锐的嗅觉……它无法看见颜色的缺陷,使它能够分辨事物之间的差异。)”可知,狗的嗅觉优势弥补了色盲的不足。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The tests done mainly focused on the dogs’ responses to colors for food. Dogs could not tell the difference between one color, a signal for food, and other colors that were not for food. Similar tests that were done on cats produced similar results (所做的测试主要集中在狗对食物颜色的反应上。狗无法区分作为食物信号的一种颜色和其他非食物相关的颜色。在猫身上做的类似测试也得出了类似的结果)”可知,科学家通过观察狗和猫对食物颜色的反应,得出它们是色盲的结论。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The only animals, other than man, which scientists can say for sure have color vision are monkeys and apes. (除了人类之外,科学家能确定拥有色觉的动物只有猴子和猿类。)”可知,狮子不在拥有色觉的动物范围内。故选A。
根据第三段中“For them, life in a colorless world is neither a difficulty, nor a threat to their survival. (对它们来说,生活在无色的世界里既不是一种困难,也不会对它们的生存构成威胁。)”可知,文中只是说色盲不会对这些动物的生存构成威胁,而非它们“能毫无威胁地生存”,C选项表述过于绝对;根据第三段中“Many colorblind animals have dull-colored coats, hunt for or look for food in the dark of night. (许多色盲动物的皮毛颜色暗淡,在黑夜中捕食或寻找食物。)”可知A、B选项正确;根据第三段中“Their other senses have developed to the point where the lack of color vision in no way weakens them. (它们的其他感官已经发展到即使没有色觉也丝毫不会削弱它们能力的程度。)”可知D选项正确。故选C。
D
Anxious about returning to work after a career break? You post about your troubles online and two strangers reply. Stranger 1: “I understand your anxiety; your courage matters.” Stranger 2: “I’ve struggled with the same problem. Just jump in!” Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?
Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.
The secret to the chatbots’ success lies in mistakes humans make. When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker. In a 2024 study, Microsoft’s Bing Chat scored higher than humans by using a three-step method: explaining people’s struggles, acknowledging and justifying how they might feel, and asking follow-up questions.
Humans can also adopt similar strategies like “looping for understanding”—repeating others’ words in their own terms and checking correctness (“Do I have that right?”). Chatbots are natural loopers, and when humans learn it, they better understand others’ emotions and make them feel heard. These skills extend beyond strengthening family and friend bonds: dozens of studies show managers and employers using such methods tend to have more loyal, effective, and productive employees.
Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits. Chatbots repeat formulaic (公式化的) responses (“I hear you”) that feel robotic over time. They can’t feel or truly care for us, and studies show most human beings still want to engage with other humans. Some of the bugs of human connection are also, in fact, features. Chatbots can’t roll their eyes or leave our texts unanswered. But the fact that we often must earn human empathy, and that it comes from limited beings who sacrifice (牺牲) to be there for us, is part of its beauty.
32. What is the author’s purpose in quoting the two strangers’ replies?
A. To compare two ways of giving advice.
B. To introduce a psychological phenomenon.
C. To suggest how to overcome anxiety.
D. To criticize human’s communication.
33 What does the underlined phrase “fell short of” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Differed from. B. Failed to match.
C. Did better than. D. Were in need of.
34. What can humans learn from chatbots’ empathy strategies?
A. To provide direct solutions.
B. To stress shared stories.
C. To correct speakers’ mistakes.
D. To avoid self-centered responses.
35. What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?
A. AI is an impressive listener. B. Human empathy is valuable.
C. AI responds to human’s pain calmly. D. There are problems with human interaction.
B 33. B 34. D 35. B
根据第一段中的“Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?(研究表明,大多数人认为陌生人1更有同理心——但它通常是一个聊天机器人。惊讶吗?)”可知,作者引用两个陌生人的回复是为了引出聊天机器人更具同理心这一心理现象。故选B项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.(研究表明,聊天机器人在同理心方面经常胜过人类。
根据第三段中的“When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker.(当人类看到有人处于痛苦中时,我们经常会分享个人经历(“我也经历过挣扎”)或急于给出建议(“这么做!”)。虽然是出于好意,但急于发表看法可能会轻视对方的痛苦,而将焦点转移到自己身上则会削弱对方被倾听的期望。然而,聊天机器人避免了这些错误。没有个人经历或解决问题的紧迫感,它们完全专注于说话者。)”可知,人类可以从聊天机器人身上学到避免以自我为中心的回应。故选D项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits.

Learning with Short Videos: Tips for Students
Short videos are not just for fun — they can be great tools for learning. Many students use them to study English, science, or even history. But how can you make sure you learn well from them? Here are some simple tips.
Choose the right videos
Not all short videos are good for learning. Look for ones made by teachers or educational channels. ____36____ For example, if you’re learning grammar, choose a video that explains just one rule at a time.
Watch with a goal
Before you press “play”, ask yourself: “What do I want to learn from this?” Maybe it’s a new English word or a math formula. ____37____ This helps you stay focused, not just watch passively.
Don’t watch too many at once

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.

A. She has overcome her fears of competitive sports. B. She has realized her own limitations.
C. She has become a more energetic person. D. She has recognized her talents for sports.
27. What does the author plan to do?
A. Become a professional athlete. B. Recommend pickleball to more friends.

Chatbots are natural loopers and when humans learn it, they better understand others’ emotions and make them feel heard.
33. What does the underlined phrase “fell short of” mean in paragraph 2?
