When I was a little boy, I always dreamed of becoming a doctor. My mother was an emergency room nurse, so I would often go to the hospital with her and watch her care for patients. When I was in high school and began taking biology, I realized how much I loved science and the idea of one day working with children.
One experience that stands out to me was volunteering at a children’s hospital during my undergraduate years. I had the opportunity to work with children who had cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. These children had been through so much at such a young age, yet they were so brave and strong. I knew then that I wanted to help children like them.
During my undergraduate years, I pursued my goal by majoring in biology and chemistry. These courses laid a solid groundwork in the sciences, which is necessary in the medical profession. In addition, I devoted time to shadowing pediatricians (儿科医生) and volunteering at clinics to gain a full understanding of the field. These experiences exposed me to the hands-on nature of pediatrics (儿科学) and the opportunity to assist families during challenging times.
As I advanced in my studies, I developed a growing interest in the research aspect of medicine. I participated in multiple research projects, such as a study on childhood asthma (哮喘) and its correlation with academic performance. This involvement gave me insight into the significance of research in advancing our understanding of pediatric illnesses and their treatments.
One of the aspects of pediatrics that I find most rewarding is the opportunity to build relationships with patients and their families. Children are not just patients; they are individuals with unique needs and personalities. As a pediatrician, I am responsible for understanding those needs and providing care tailored to each child.
4. What impressed the author most about the kids?
A. Their optimism and patience. B. Their courage and toughness.

6. Why does the author find his job meaningful?
A. He valued care between people. B. He could keep a youthful mind.
C. He could hear kids’ laughter. D. He longed to try new things.
7 Which words can best describe the author?
A. Considerate and modest. B. Observant and upright.
C. Humorous and helpful. D. Determined and responsible.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer. It’s dogs. That’s the conclusion of an international group of researchers, who found that dogs have twice as many neurons (神经元) as cats. Neurons are cells that deal with information. And so, the more neurons an animal has, the better its information processing capability, these scientists say.
The study was carried out by researchers from six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa. It’s going to be published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. The research was done in the lab of Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University.
Until recently, scientists interested in comparing intelligence across species were limited to using brain size as a sign. “In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope.
This is what they found when they looked at the cerebral cortex of cats and dogs. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that processes information. A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.
When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons. “So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex,” she said. “And this means that dogs can do more thinking things than cats.”
8. What does the author imply about the old debate?
A. It was surprising. B. It was meaningless.
C. It was easily solved. D. It had no clear result.
9. Why did the researchers turn some brain matter into a soup?
A. To wake up neurons. B. To study brain growth.
C. To see neurons clearly. D. To study cortex better.
10. What affects the neuron numbers of dogs?
A. Practice. B. Weights. C. Thinking. D. Lifestyles.
11. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项研究,研究表明狗比猫聪明,因为狗的神经元更多。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer.(你知道那个关于狗是否比猫聪明的古老的争论吗?现在,科学有了明确的答案)”可推知,以前这个争论是没有明确答案的。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope.(“2005年,我的实验室提出了一种非常简单、快速且经济的方法来计算大脑及大脑各部分中的细胞数量,”Herculano-Houzel说道。研究人员所做的就是取一些脑组织,将其基本转化为一种“汤”。这一过程释放了细胞核,从而使科学家能够直接在显微镜下对它们进行计数)”可知,研究人员把一些大脑物质变成“汤”是为了让细胞核分离出来,从而能在显微镜下直接数细胞核数量,也就是为了更清楚地观察神经元。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(一只15磅重的混合品种狗的脂肪有4.29亿)”和最后一段中“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元。)”可知,重量影响狗的神经元数量。故选B项。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词句前文“A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(猫的大脑皮层有2.5亿个神经元,而一只15磅重的混血狗的大脑皮层则有4.29亿个神经元)”以及“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元)”,可知,狗的神经元数量大约是猫的两倍,从而推知划线词句“So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex(所以,狗的大脑皮层中的神经元大约是猫的两倍的说法是plausible)”中划线词应为“合理的”意思,与A项同义。故选A项。

Imagine that you are in a crowded place. You do not notice, but someone is watching you and learns your iPhone password(密码). Then, they steal your phone. Suddenly, your photos, documents, financial information, and the rest of your digital life have been taken from you.
Apple, the iPhone maker, recently released an update to its iOS operating system. It has a new feature called Stolen Device Protection (SDP). The feature makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to open the device and access important functions and settings.
Apple says the feature adds extra security for users. It addresses a drawback that thieves have used to lock device owners out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud, and take money from their bank accounts.
SDP keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations”, such as their home or workplace. It also reduces the importance of passwords. Instead, it favors “biometric”(生物识别的)features such as faces or fingerprints, which are a lot harder to copy.
If a thief tries to erase or reset an iPhone, the device will require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to confirm that the person is the rightful owner. The new feature does not let someone use the password or any other backup method.
Another part of the new feature is designed to slow down thieves trying to change security settings. For example, if someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account, change the password or reset the phone in an unfamiliar location, they will have to authenticate(证实)by using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.
Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will lead to this feature.
12. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To set a phone-stealing scene.
B. To introduce the following text.
C. To remind readers to be cautious.
D. To explain how password theft directly causes device loss.
13. What can SDP do to add security for users?
A. Stop iCloud files from being deleted.
B. Make it less likely to enter the phone.
C. Secure Apple accounts with remote locking.
D. Prevent thieves from accessing bank accounts.
14. What does SDP require for resetting a stolen iPhone?
A. Previous passwords. B. A new security setting. C. An Apple ID account. D. Identity recognition.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. iPhone’s anti-theft measure. B. Apple ID security settings.
C. Usage of biometric features. D. Apple’s iOS operating system.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. A

Mom’s Decision to Spend More Time with Son
One sunny afternoon, young Timmy sat on the front steps of their cozy house, his chin (下巴) resting on his hands, eyes fixed on the street. His friends were playing in the park across the road, their laughter filling the air, but Timmy didn’t join them. He was waiting for his mom to come home.
Timmy’s mom, Mrs. Thompson, was a hard-working real estate agent (房地产经纪人). She was constantly on the go, showing houses to clients, attending meetings, and working late into the night. Most days, Timmy only saw her in the early morning rush before school or briefly in the evening when she was too tired to do much more than give him a quick hug.
That day, when Mrs. Thompson finally pulled up in her car, she noticed Timmy’s sad expression. As she got out of the car, Timmy ran up to her, his eyes lighting up for a moment. “Mom, can we play a game today? Like we used to?” he asked hopefully. Mrs. Thompson looked at her watch and sighed. “Not today, honey. I have so much work to do. Maybe tomorrow.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped, and he quietly walked back to the steps.
That evening, as Mrs. Thompson sat at her desk, going through piles of paperwork, she couldn’t get Timmy’s disappointed face out of her mind. She realized that she had been so focused on her career that she was missing out on her son’s childhood. After much thought, she made a decision. She would take some time off work to be with Timmy.
The next morning, Mrs. Thompson called her boss and explained the situation. To her relief, her boss was understanding and gave her a week off. She then went to Timmy’s room with a big smile on her face.

However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” Timmy’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement. He jumped out of bed and hugged his mom tightly. “Really, Mom? That’s amazing!” They spent the morning planning all the things they would do together. They decided to go to the zoo first. As they drove to the zoo, Timmy chatted non-stop, his face glowing with happiness. Upon arrival, they rushed towards the panda enclosure, where they watched in awe as the cute pandas munched on bamboo. Timmy laughed out loud when one panda rolled over like a clumsy ball. Mrs. Thompson photographed these precious moments, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. It was one of her most important clients. The client had an urgent question about a house they were interested in buying. Mrs. Thompson hesitated for a moment. Looking at Timmy’s excited face, she made a choice. She silenced her phone and put it back in her bag. She turned to Timmy and said, “Nothing is more important than this time with you, Timmy.” They spent the rest of the day at the zoo, exploring every corner, and even had a picnic lunch on the grass. By the end of the day, both Timmy and Mrs. Thompson were tired but filled with joy.

These children had been through so much at such a young age yet they were so brave and strong.
C. Their kindness and curiosity. D. Their sincerity and cuteness.
5. What is implied in the author’s undergraduate years?
A. He studied rare illnesses in kids. B. He published an academic paper.
C. He combined learning and practice. D. He helped cure a child with asthma.
6. Why does the author find his job meaningful?
A. He valued care between people. B. He could keep a youthful mind.
C. He could hear kids’ laughter. D. He longed to try new things.
7. Which words can best describe the author?
A. Considerate and modest. B. Observant and upright.
C. Humorous and helpful. D. Determined and responsible.
C
A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless.
D
