Last October I was on a diving holiday in the Philippines with seven other advanced divers. I dived off the boat slowly sinking to about 20m.
After nearly 45 minutes, the sound of my breathing was drowned out by a low rumble like an engine and I felt deep powerful vibrations (震动) as if a big boat was passing overhead. The instructor and I both swam next to each other, staying close to the side of the reef (礁石), because the situation felt extremely sinister.
Then the vibration became so intense that I could feel it in my bones and then the sound turned into a deafening roar. Suddenly, a few meters below us, breaks began forming and the sand was sucked down. That’s when I got what it was. The noise was the sound of the earth splintering open and grinding against itself.
The instructor and I held hands and looked into each other’s eyes, and I felt comforted by his presence. My body went on high alert, ready to react. But I had no power over whatever this was. The only option was to stay very still and let it do whatever it’s going to do.
It took enormous willpower to resist the urge to swim to the surface, which was not sensible as the situation on the surface at that time was ambiguous with potential threats pending. Soon we saw other divers.
The sound and vibration lasted only two or three minutes. We all held hands to avoid decompression sickness, which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief to see all the divers safe.
Back on the boat, we rushed to check the news and discovered we had witnessed a huge earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. It released more energy than 30 Hiroshima bombs, though it seemed that we were not at the epicenter (震中). I was high and felt extremely lucky not because of my recent survival miracle, but to have experienced nature at its most stunning and its most frightening moment.
1.The underlined word in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A.dangerous B.urgent C.confusing D.harmonious
2.Why didn’t the author rise to the surface before the vibration stopped?
A.Because the he was very afraid of big waves.
B.Because he had lost all the strengths to swim.
C.Because he could sense the unclear water situation.
D.Because he tried to avoid unexpected danger above.
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.At the beginning of the event, a big boat passed by causing big vibration.
B.All the divers used the reef as the protection against the violent vibration.
C.I felt relieved as the instructor was experienced in handling situations like this.
D.Powerless to fight nature, all the divers tried to cooperate and help each other.
4.Why did the author feel fortunate on the boat?
A.Because he was not at the epicenter of the earthquake.
B.Because he finally survived a huge earthquake.
C.Because he could witness a rare natural phenomenon.
D.Because he didn’t suffer from decompression sickness.
Measure Your Stress with Fitness Trackers
Not sure if it’s time for stress management? Check your watch.
Toxic stress, caused by pandemic, 1 (fuel) a wave of new stress management trackers. Offered in health monitoring devices by companies such as Fitbit, WHOOP, and others, they aim to make users more informed of stress and learn tools for handling it.
These trackers collect information on metrics such as heart rate, skin temperature, and sleep quality 2 cutting-edge sensors in smart watches, wristbands, and rings. They also continuously assess heart rate variability, or HRV, 3 is the balance between the body’s systems for ramping up to a challenge and slowing down to rest. Some, such as Google’s Fitbit, 4 (measure) electrical changes in certain sweat glands (腺体) that respond to stress and emotional arousal. This invisible “electrodermal” sweat “contains extra information about stress 5 HRV,” says Hugo Posada-Quintero, biomedical engineering professor at the University of Connecticut, “which can also be a measure of emotional responses.”
When 6 (combine), these metrics reveal psychological stress—like chronic worrying or work aggravation—that damages health and 7 otherwise escape our awareness. This so-called “unrecognized stress” is common in people with busy lifestyles.
The trackers show 8 other stressors, like exercise, are beneficial in the right amounts. 9 some physical responses to exercise resemble unhealthy stress, the trackers may distinguish good stress from bad. If you’re moving your body in specified ways, they can determine that your fast pulse is from road running, not road rage.
10 (quantify) your habits and experiences can encourage behavior changes for stress management. If you eat a large, sugary meal before bed, for example, your stress numbers go up the digestive overload increases heart rate. The sensors will further detect how the late meal disrupts sleep.

【答案】1.A 2.D 3.D 4.C
根据划线单词上文的内容“After nearly 45 minutes, the sound of my breathing was drowned out by a low rumble like an engine and I felt deep powerful vibrations (震动) as if a big boat was passing overhead. The instructor and I both swam next to each other, staying close to the side of the reef 故选A项。
根据第五段的句子“It took enormous willpower to resist the urge to swim to the surface, which was not sensible as the situation on the surface at that time was ambiguous with potential threats pending.(要克制住游向水面的冲动需要巨大的意志力,这是不明智的,因为当时水面上的情况模糊不清,潜在的威胁迫在眉睫)”可知,在震动停止之前作者没有浮上水面是因为水面上的情况也不清楚,有潜在的威胁,他在试图避免上面的意外危险。故选D项。
根据第六段“The sound and vibration lasted only two or three minutes. We all held hands to avoid decompression sickness, which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief to see all the divers safe.(声音和震动只持续了两三分钟。
根据最后一句“I was high and felt extremely lucky not because of my recent survival miracle, but to have experienced nature at its most stunning and its most frightening moment.(我很兴奋,觉得自己非常幸运,不是因为我最近的生存奇迹,而是因为我经历了大自然最令人震惊和最可怕的时刻)”可知,在船上作者感到幸运是因为他能目睹一种罕见的自然现象。故选C项。

1.has fueled 2.with 3.which 4.measure 5.beyond 6.combined 7.may/might 8.that 9.Although/Though/While 10.Quantifying
故填has fueled。
故填with。
故填which。
When these metrics are_____ (combine),these metrics与combine“(使)结合”为被动关系,用are combined,作谓语,省略these metrics are,保留过去分词。故填combined。
故填may或might。
故填that。
故填Although/Though/While。
