The good news? Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills. That’s why we’re spotlighting Kajal Patil, a volunteer who recently moved and found volunteer opportunities on Volunteer Match to make an impact in her new community. Kajal moved to the United States from India in February 2017. Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga teacher in her home country, Kajal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests on VolunteerMatch. “I enjoy volunteering and it’s great to have such meaningful experiences in life,” says Kajal. Kajal was drawn to a volunteer opportunity with the Meridian International Center to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). Kajal had previous experience working with the markets candidates were applying from, and the position also afforded her the opportunity to work remotely. After connecting with the opportunity on VolunteerMatch and successfully completing the application process, Kajal got to work. Her role involved reviewing 44 in-depth applications from potential candidates across Latin America and the Caribbean for a four-week fellowship in the U. S. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans. With almost 4, 000 applicants in 2017, Meridian International Center considers volunteers like Kajal to be integral members of the team. With help from volunteers, 250 candidates have now been selected to take part in the program and will travel to the U. S. this fall. Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills, while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting. She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with Meridian International Center, “A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,” adds Kajal. “By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it boost my self-esteem, other people benefited too. Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve yourself, others, and the whole society”. Whether you recently moved to a new place or are looking to make an impact in your current community, find a volunteer opportunity to empower yourself — and others — on VolunteerMatch. 1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a benefit of volunteering in a new community? A.Volunteering helps newcomers adapt to a new community. B.Volunteering offers opportunities to polish existing skills C.Volunteering enables people to acquire valuable professional skills. D.Volunteering allows people to make friends all over the world. 2.One of the reasons why Kajal chose to work with the Meridian International Center was that _________. A.she had experience working with candidates B.she was allowed to work wherever she wanted C.the working time of the job was quite flexible D.she was good at summarizing business ideas 3.What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4? A.Kajal considered this volunteer role to be both challenging and rewarding. B.Volunteers like Kajal played an important part in the success of the program. C.Kajal felt that helping others was more important than self-improvement. D.The Meridian International Center relied entirely on volunteers to manage applications. 4.The main purpose of this passage is to _________. A.advertise for the volunteer platform that provides volunteer opportunities B.encourage U. S. immigrates to volunteer to adapt to a new environment C.share Kajal’s story to inspire other young people who wish to volunteer D.illustrate the benefits of volunteering for immigrants’ professional development 2. Leonardo da Vinci or the Chinese? It has long been considered that Leonardo da Vinci was actually the first person to ever draft a landscape on August 5th, 1473. This unprecedented act of describing mountains and trees on their own was revolutionary and surely helped Leonardo’s already genius status, but is this really the truth? Long before one of the greatest minds of humanity was born, the Chinese artists have been painting landscapes, 1 (describe) rivers and rocks, mountains and trees, for centuries. Leonardo’s1473 drawing actually looks a lot like a painting Winter Evening Landscape by Li Gongnian, 2 (paint) in 1120, over350 years before da Vinci’s famous sketch. The western world tends to center 3 in terms of inventions, the practice that continues on even to the 215t century. Just 4 (look) back on your years in school and try to remember one thing you learned about the Far East, whether its history or art, and I be t that you will have to think long and hard 5 you remember anything. This, of course, is nothing new of scandal (丑闻), as all cultures tend to think 6 their own as the most important one, but when it comes to unfairly crediting a western artist for something the Chinese have been doing for centuries, the Western-centrism becomes a bit of a problem, 7 brings us to Chinese landscape painting. The artists from the Middle Kingdom have been painting with such sensitivity and poetry while Europe was in the midst of fighting the cruel crusades (十字军东征) and completely forgetting the flourishing creativity of the ancient Greece. China has been in its golden age that Europe would not see until the ages of Leonardo and Van Gogh, who 8 (inspire) interestingly, heavily by the Chinese art. It is still a mystery 9 da Vinci’s sketch looks almost exactly like the Gongnian piece, which draws the curious minds 10 (wonder) if Leonardo had somehow managed to see the painting for himself, maybe through the artifacts brought from the Silk Road. Notice ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Student Union 1 / 9 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ Unit 4 Achievements Period 3 C Listening and speaking分层练习 基础达标 01 能力提升 02 拓展培优 03 1. 1. A.advertise for the volunteer platform that provides volunteer opportunities B.encourage U. S. immigrates to volunteer to adapt to a new environment C.share Kajal’s story to inspire other young people who wish to volunteer D.illustrate the benefits of volunteering for immigrants’ professional development 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.B 4.A 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中“Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills. That's why we're spotlighting Kajal Patil, a volunteer who recently moved and found volunteer opportunities on Volunteer Match to make an impact in her new community.(志愿服务是融入新社区、结识新朋友、学习宝贵技能的好方法。 以及第五段中“Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills, while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting.( 卡哈尔说,这个志愿者的机会增强了她现有的技能,同时帮助她建立了新的技能,比如时间管理、商业分析、决策、计划和演讲。)” 根据第三段“Kajal was drawn to a volunteer opportunity with the Meridian International Center to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) . With help from volunteers, 250 candidates have now been selected to take part in the program and will travel to the U. S. this fall.( 2017年,子午线国际中心有近4000名申请者,他们认为像卡哈尔这样的志愿者是团队不可或缺的一员。 根据文章大意以及第一段中“Moving can be terrifying—whether it's to a new city or an entirely new country. The good news? Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills.( 无论是搬到一个新的城市还是一个全新的国家,搬家都是很可怕的。 和最后一段“Whether you recently moved to a new place or are looking to make an impact in your current community, find a volunteer opportunity to empower yourself — and others — on VolunteerMatch.( 无论你是刚搬到一个新地方,还是想在你目前的社区中发挥作用,都可以在VolunteerMatch上找到一个志愿者的机会,让自己和他人都能发挥自己的作用。)” 故选A项。 2. Leonardo da Vinci or the Chinese? China has been in its golden age that Europe would not see until the ages of Leonardo and Van Gogh, who 8 (inspire) interestingly, heavily by the Chinese art. It is still a mystery 9 da Vinci’s sketch looks almost exactly like the Gongnian piece, which draws the curious minds 10 (wonder) if Leonardo had somehow managed to see the painting for himself, maybe through the artifacts brought from the Silk Road. 1.describing 2.painted 3.itself 4.look 5.before 6.of 7.which 8.was inspired 9.that/why 10.to wonder 【导语】这是一篇议论文。 故填before。 6. think of…as… 故填of。 7. 故填which。 8. 故填was inspired。 9. 故填that/why。 10. 故填to wonder。 Notice ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Student Union 【答案】                                                                         Notice Dear students,         Next Saturday, our school will organize an outdoor labor education activity, which aims to enhance our understanding of the value of labor and foster teamwork spirit.        There are some things you should pay attention to. Firstly, dress comfortably and wear suitable shoes for outdoor activities. Moreover, bring enough water and sunscreen to stay hydrated and protected.         We strongly encourage all students to participate in this meaningful event. It’s a great opportunity to learn and grow together. Don’t miss out! 词汇积累 提高:enhance→boost 培养:foster→cultivate 另外:moreover→what’s more 参加:participate in→take part in 2. Firstly, dress comfortably and wear suitable shoes for outdoor activities. Firstly, dress comfortably and wear shoes that are suitable for outdoor activities. 【点睛】 [高分句型1] Next Saturday, our school will organize an outdoor labor education activity, which aims to enhance our understanding of the value of labor and foster teamwork spirit. (运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] There are some things you should pay attention to.
