W: Did you take any pills?
M: Yes. But they didn’t seem to help. What should I do?
W: Well, it’s important to find out why you have the problem in the first place. People develop headaches for different reasons, but a common cause is what they do at work. What do you do for a living at work?
M: Actually, I deal with customers online complaints every day. If they booked a holiday and had problems, they contact me.
W: So you spend much time staring at a computer screen while you’re dealing with clients.
M: That’s right.
M: Well, there’s your cause. It’s the computer screen. Try to limit the time you stare at the screen.

Good morning, this is Michael Jones here with the ten o’clock news report. Earlier this week, we heard about Milton, the dog that traveled over three thousand miles to meet his family. When the Johnson family moved from California to New York, they couldn’t find their dog. And they were sad to leave him behind. About a month later, Milton showed up at their doorstep in New York. We cannot believe how far this dog traveled. The family will be doing an interview in the studio tomorrow morning. In other news, there has been an outbreak of car thefts in Orange County this week. About ten cars were stolen from outside their owner’s homes on Monday. If you see or hear anything, please call 911. About ten people found themselves stuck on a roller coaster after a breakdown at the Six Flags Theme Park on Tuesday in Union City. The victims swung upside down for around three minutes as staff worked to restart the roller coaster. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Six Flags has said that they checked their rides very seriously and that this was simply an unfortunate accident. That’s it for the news. When we come back from a commercial break, Michelle Smith will be here with the weather report.
A
(新题材)Franz Boas’s description of Inuit (因纽特人) life in the 19th century illustrates the probable moral code of early humans. Here, norms (规范) were unwritten and rarely expressed clearly, but were well understood and taken to heart. Dishonest and violent behaviours were disapproved of; leadership, marriage and interactions with other groups were loosely governed by traditions. Conflict was often resolved in musical battles. Because arguing angrily leads to chaos, it was strongly discouraged. With life in the unforgiving Northern Canada being so demanding, the Inuit’s practical approach to morality made good sense.
The similarity of moral virtues across cultures is striking, even though the relative ranking of the virtues may vary with a social group’s history and environment. Typically, cruelty and cheating are discouraged, while cooperation, humbleness and courage are praised. These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any moralising religion or written law. Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared mechanisms for learning and problem solving. Our social instincts (本能) include the intense desire to belong. The approval of others is rewarding, while their disapproval is strongly disliked. These social emotions prepare our brains to shape our behaviour according to the norms and values of our family and our community. More generally, social instincts motivate us to learn how to behave in a socially complex world.
The mechanism involves a repurposed reward system originally used to develop habits important for self-care. Our brains use the system to acquire behavioural patterns regarding safe routes home, efficient food gathering and dangers to avoid. Good habits save time, energy and sometimes your life. Good social habits do something similar in a social context. We learn to tell the truth, even when lying is self-serving; we help a grandparent even when it is inconvenient. We acquire what we call a sense of right and wrong.
Social benefits are accompanied by social demands: we must get along, but not put up with too much. Hence self-discipline is advantageous. In humans, a greatly enlarged brain boosts self-control, just as it boosts problem-solving skills in the social as well as the physical world. These abilities are strengthened by our capacity for language, which allows social practices to develop in extremely unobvious ways.
21. What can be inferred about the forming of the Inuit’s moral code?
A. Living conditions were the drive. B. Unwritten rules were the target.
C. Social tradition was the basis. D. Honesty was the key.
22. What can we learn from this passage?
A Inconveniences are the cause of telling lies.
B. Basic human needs lead to universal norms.
C. Language capacity is limited by self-control.
D. Written laws have great influence on virtues.
23. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Virtues: Bridges Across Cultures B. The Values of Self-discipline
C. Brains: Walls Against Chaos D. The Roots of Morality
C 22. B 23. D
根据第一段第三句“Dishonest and violent behaviours were disapproved of; leadership, marriage and interactions with other groups were loosely governed by traditions. (欺骗和暴力行为不被认可;领导、婚姻和与其他群体的互动则松散地由传统所规范。)”可知,因纽特人的社会传统是其道德准则形成的基础,各项行为规范均受到传统的影响和约束。故选C项。
22. 细节理解题。根据第二段第四、五句“These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any moralising religion or written law. Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared mechanisms for learning and problem solving.
B
David Grant and Yvonne Faulkner-Grant of Warwickshire, England always let their 13-year-old dog, Scruff, pick up the plastic bottles he finds while out on their daily walks. The dog carries the bottle for a while, and they kick it or throw it for him to chase. The game is over when Scruff loses interest and drops it.
Throughout 2021, David and Yvonne observed Scruff’s habit of finding even the most well-hidden bottles. They also noticed a marked increase in the amount of litter in their rural area. David says they were both taught never to drop their trash as children, so they couldn’t believe that people were littering so much. At the start of 2022, David and Yvonne decided to start picking up the bottles to bring home with them. It was the large number of litter that made them decide to train Scruff to gather other people’s trash.
Since starting this journey, Scruff has become a local celebrity in his neighborhood. David and Yvonne never let Scruff pick up anything dangerous, like glass. They also remain appalled by the amount of litter they’re seeing, and hope that people will hear Scruff story and either stop dropping trash or, perhaps, try picking it up themselves. Plus, Yvonne thinks Scruff took to his duties so well, other dogs could easily be trained to do what he does as well.
In the end, Scruff was able to gather up 1,334 bottles — along with three cups, a Pringles tub, and a baby feeding bottle. “If we walk the same route (路线) every day, he will find bottles on that route every single day.” said David. “We feel a bit of pride that we are picking them up, but a bit of anger that they’re even there,” Yvonne said.
24. In which situation will the game be over?
A. Scruff gathers 100 bottles.
B. Scruff throws the bottle into the bin.
C. Scruff drops the plastic bottle.
D. David Grant sells the bottle for money.
25. What were David and Yvonne taught from their childhood?
A. Don’t drop litter everywhere. B. Animals are our friends.
C. The best fish swim near the bottom. D. Every dog has his day.
26. Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “appalled” in para. 3?
A. Satisfied. B. Shocked. C. Curious. D. Excited.
27. How do David and Yvonne feel about the result?
A. Excited and proud. B. Angry and disappointed.
C. Unhappy but understandable. D. Proud but angry.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第一段“The game is over when Scruff loses interest and drops it.(当Scruff失去兴趣并丢掉时,游戏就结束了)”可知,当斯克鲁夫扔掉塑料瓶游戏就结束了。故选C。
根据第二段“David says they were both taught never to drop their trash as children, so they couldn’t believe that people were littering so much.(大卫说,他们小时候都被教育不要乱扔垃圾,所以他们不相信人们会乱扔垃圾)”可知,大卫和伊冯娜从小受到的教育是不要到处乱扔垃圾。故选A。
根据最后一段“In the end, Scruff was able to gather up 1,334 bottles — along with three cups, a Pringles tub, and a baby feeding bottle.(最后,Scruff收集了1334个瓶子,还有三个杯子,一个品客薯片桶和一个婴儿奶瓶)”可知,他们捡到了很多垃圾,推测对所看到的垃圾数量感到震惊,故划线词意思是“震惊的”。故选B。
根据最后一段““If we walk the same route (路线) every day, he will find bottles on that route every single day.” said David. “We feel a bit of pride that we are picking them up, but a bit of anger that they’re even there,” Yvonne said.(大卫说:“如果我们每天走同一条路,他每天都会在那条路上找到瓶子”。伊冯娜说:“我们为能把它们捡起来感到有点骄傲,但也有一点愤怒,因为它们就在那里。”)”可推知,大卫和伊冯娜对这个结果的看法是自豪但愤怒的。故选D
C
Faced with an attempt by a new chatbot to imitate (模仿) his own songs, the musician Nick Cave delivered a strong response: it was “an absolutely horrible attempt”. He understood that AI was in its babyhood, but could only conclude that the true horror might be that “it will forever be in its babyhood”. While a robot might one day be able to create a song, he wrote, it would never grow beyond “a kind of burlesque (滑稽的模仿)”, because robots-being composed of data-are unable to suffer, while songs arise out of suffering.
Fans of Cave and his band will agree that his music is inimitable, but that doesn’t mean they would necessarily be able to tell the difference. A few days before Cave’s remarks, experts were asked to distinguish between four genuine artworks and their AI imitations. Their conclusions were wrong five times out of 12, and they were only unitedly right in one of the four picture comparisons.
These are party games, but they point to an unfolding challenge that must be managed as a matter of urgency because, like it or not, AI art is upon us. The arrival of the human-impersonating ChatGPT might have increased general awareness, but artists across a wide range of disciplines are already exploring its potential, with the dancer Wayne McGregor and London’s Young Vic Theatre among those who have created AI-based works.
A strongly-worded report from Communications and Digital Committee (CDC) issued a wake-up call to the government, urging it to raise its game in educating future generations of tech-savvy professionals, and tackling key regulatory challenges. These included reviewing reforms to intellectual property law, strengthening the rights of performers and artists, and taking action to support the creative sector in adapting to the disturbances caused by swift and stormy technological change.
While developing AI is important, it should not be pursued at all costs, the CDC stressed. It deplored the failure of the Department for Digital, Culture, and Media to offer a defence against proposed changes to intellectual property law that would give copyright exemption (版权豁免) to any work, anywhere in the world, involving AI text and data mining.
The challenges of AI are both philosophical, as Cave suggested, and practical. They will unfold over the short and long term. State-of-the-art creative industries have a key role to play in shaping and exploring the philosophical ones, but they must have the practical help they require to survive and be successful. They need it now.
28. Why does the author mention the four picture comparisons in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress the similarities between AI art and human art.
B. To argue that human art will be replaced by AI art.
C. To prove AI is stretching the boundaries of art.
D. To imply AI art cannot be underestimated.
29. What does the underlined word “deplored” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Clearly analyzed. B. Bravely suffered.
C. Strongly criticized. D. Accurately perceived.
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Some artists see AI as a tool even though it is a threat.
B. Creative industries are responsible for causing the AI problem.
C. Tech professionals need more training to better understand AI art.
D. The quality of AI art dismisses concerns about intellectual property.
31. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Creative Thief: AI Makes Perfect Art
B. AI in Art: A Battle That Must Be Fought
C. Threat or Opportunity: The Impact of AI on Art
D. The Rise of AI Art: What It Means to Human Artists
D 29. C 30. A 31. B
根据第二段“A few days before Cave’s remarks, experts were asked to distinguish between four genuine artworks and their AI imitations. Their conclusions were wrong five times out of 12, and they were only unitedly right in one of the four picture comparisons. (在凯夫发表讲话前几天,专家们被要求区分四件真正的艺术品和它们的人工智能仿制品。他们的结论在12次中有5次是错误的,而且他们只在四张图片的对比中有一张是完全正确的。)”可推断提到了四幅图片的比较是说明人工智能艺术不可低估,故选D。
29. 词义猜测题。根据划线词上文“While developing AI is important, it should not be pursued at all costs, the CDC stressed. (CDC强调,虽然开发人工智能很重要,但不应不惜一切代价追求它。)”和画线单词所在句子“It deplored the failure of the Department for Digital, Culture, and Media to offer a defence (它deplored数字、文化和媒体部门未能提供辩护)”可知,开发人工智能很重要,但不应不惜一切代价追求它,这说明CDC对数字、文化和媒体部门未能提供辩护表示批评,故猜测deplored意思是批评,故选C。
根据第一段“He understood that AI was in its babyhood, but could only conclude that the true horror might be that “it will forever be in its babyhood”. While a robot might one day be able to create a song, he wrote, it would never grow beyond “a kind of burlesque (滑稽的模仿)”, because robots-being composed of data-are unable to suffer, while songs arise out of suffering. (他明白人工智能还处于婴儿期,但他只能得出这样的结论:真正的恐怖可能是“它将永远处于婴儿期”。他写道,也许有一天机器人能够创作一首歌,但它永远不会超越“一种滑稽模仿”,因为机器人是由数据组成的,它们无法忍受痛苦,而歌曲是从痛苦中产生的。)”可推断有些艺术家认为尽管人工智能是一种威胁,但它更是一种工具。故选A。
通读全文,尤其最后一段“The challenges of AI are both philosophical, as Cave suggested, and practical. They will unfold over the short and long term. State-of-the-art creative industries have a key role to play in shaping and exploring the philosophical ones, but they must have the practical help they require to survive and be successful. They need it now. (正如凯夫所言,人工智能面临的挑战既有哲学层面的,也有实践层面的。它们将在短期和长期内展开。最先进的创意产业在塑造和探索哲学产业方面发挥着关键作用,但它们必须得到生存和成功所需的实际帮助。他们现在就需要。)”可知本文讲述的就是人工智能艺术必定要面临很多挑战,B选项“艺术中的AI:一场必须进行的战斗”符合文章主旨,适合做标题,故选B。
D
Since the mid-1990s, tourists have paid storm-chasers to take them to places in the American Great Plains where they expect to see tornadoes (龙卷风), whose winds may top 250 miles an hour and can clear a pathway a mile wide and 50 miles long. Why, a reasonable follow-up question might go, would anyone want to get so close to something so disruptive? These tourists, a study found, characterized their relationship to severe weather as a “passion”, describing their feelings about tornadoes using words like “enjoyment”, “fascination” and “love”. But the main motivator seemed to be simple: Twisters are cool.
America has many more tornadoes than any other country, and its people have long regarded twisters with a mix of fear, awe and thrilled pleasure. Fast-moving and dramatic, tornadoes have been irresistible parts for popular entertainment. One needn’t be an extreme-weather enthusiast, however, to take a brief and far-less dangerous tour: of culture tornadoes have inspired and of the transformation of American society’s feelings about these storms from fear to excitement.
European colonists (殖民者) in the future United States were fascinated - and sometimes horrified - by their new land’s weather. In the Early Republic, some people began to write about tornadoes in terms of awe, and to produce art that explored the phenomenon’s natural beauty. Since the 1930s, American tornadoes have been less deadly: the country has much better early-warning systems, fewer people live in rural areas and tornado activity has largely shifted from the southeast to the thinly-populated Great Plains.
Storm-chasing-a scientific, thrill-seeking activity that most Americans found out about via the 1996 film Twister, is still incomprehensible to many who don’t practice it. “I find it difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t chased what forces us to seek pleasure from risk,” wrote Jennifer Henderson, a crazy storm-chaser, characterizing her feelings while chasing as “a sense of exposure and revelation (揭露) tightly coupled”.
32. What does the underlined word “disruptive” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Amazing. B. Ruinous. C. Essential. D. Complicated.
33. What do we learn about tornadoes in America?
A. They are small high-speed weather events.
B. They are less common in American history.
C. They have aroused interest in weather tours.
D. They are less dangerous than normally supposed.
34. Why did tornadoes become less harmful in America?
A. The population of America declined dramatically.
B. The tornadoes didn’t exist in the southeastern area.
C. The natural disaster warning got improved.
D. The environment was damaged by colonists.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Thrill of Storm Chasing B. The Tour of Watching Tornadoes
C. The Formation of Tornadoes D. A Unique Phenomenon in Nature
B 33. C 34. C 35. A
根据第一段“Since the mid-1990s, tourists have paid storm-chasers to take them to places in the American Great Plains where they expect to see tornadoes. Why, a reasonable follow-up question might go, would anyone want to get so close to something so disruptive? (自20世纪90年代中期以来,游客们花钱请风暴追逐者带他们去美国大平原上他们预计会看到龙卷风的地方。为什么,一个合理的后续问题可能会出现,会有人想如此接近如此disruptive的东西吗?)”以及下文“severe weather”(恶劣天气) 可知,龙卷风是有破坏性的,故选B。
33. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“America has many more tornadoes than any other country, and its people have long regarded twisters with a mix of fear, awe and thrilled pleasure. Fast-moving and dramatic, tornadoes have been irresistible parts for popular entertainment. (美国的龙卷风比任何其他国家都多,长期以来,美国人民一直以恐惧、敬畏和激动的喜悦来看待龙卷风。快速移动和戏剧性的龙卷风已经成为大众娱乐无法抗拒的部分)”可知,美国的龙卷风引起了人们对美国天气旅游的兴趣。故选C。
34. 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Since the 1930s, American tornadoes have been less deadly: the country has much better early-warning systems, fewer people live in rural areas and tornado activity has largely shifted from the southeast to the thinly-populated Great Plains. (自20世纪30年代以来,美国龙卷风的致命性一直在下降:该国有更好的预警系统,农村地区的人口减少,龙卷风活动基本上从东南部转移到了人口稀少的大平原)”可知,在美国,龙卷风的危害有所减少是因为美国在自然灾害预警方面取得了更大进展。故选C。
35. 主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Since the mid-1990s, tourists have paid storm-chasers to take them to places in the American Great Plains where they expect to see tornadoes (自20世纪90年代中期以来,游客们花钱请龙卷风追逐者带他们去美国大平原上他们预计会看到龙卷风的地方)”以及“These tourists, a study found, characterized their relationship to severe weather as a “passion”, describing their feelings about tornadoes using words like “enjoyment”, “fascination” and “love”. (一项研究发现,这些游客将他们与恶劣天气的关系描述为“激情”,用“享受”、“着迷”和“爱”等词描述他们对龙卷风的感受。)”可知,本文主要描述了追逐龙卷风的美国人,并分析了游客们为什么会追求这种充满刺激的项目。A项“The Thrill of Storm Chasing(追逐龙卷风的刺激)”最能概括本文主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选A。

Studies suggest that a short nap during this period can help boost alertness, and improve cognitive function without interfering with nighttime sleep. ____39____ Napping too long may result in waking up feeling worse than before. Once a nap extends beyond 30 minutes, the brain transitions into slow-wave sleep, making it much harder to wake up. And if a nap is taken too late in the day, it can make it harder to fall asleep at night.
____40____ Keeping naps between 10 and 20 minutes prevents dizziness. The ideal time is before 2 pm—napping too late can push back the body’s natural sleep schedule. The best naps happen in a cool, dark, and quiet environment, similar to nighttime sleep conditions.
A. That midday nap might be the reason.
B. But napping is not suitable for everyone.
C. But there’s something worth paying attention to.
D. To nap effectively, timing and environment matter.
E. Our internal body clock creates cycles of wakefulness and tiredness.
F. These “power naps” allow the brain to rest without slipping into deep sleep.
G. The key lies in understanding how the body regulates sleep and wakefulness.
A 37. G 38. E 39. C 40. D
故选A。
37. 上文“Napping is a double-edged sword. Done right, it’s a powerful way to recharge the brain, improve concentration, and support mental and physical health. Done wrong, it can leave you foggy, disoriented, and struggling to fall asleep later.(午睡是一把双刃剑。做对了,它是给大脑充电、提高注意力、支持身心健康的有力方法。做错了,它会让你感到头晕、迷失方向,之后很难入睡)”指出午睡有利有弊,G项(关键在于了解身体是如何调节睡眠和清醒的)承接上文,指出如何发挥午睡的好处,避免其坏处,其中“key”和前文相呼应,指出了解身体如何调节睡眠和清醒是关键。故选G。
38. 上文“Most people experience a natural decline in alertness in the early afternoon, typically between 1 pm and 4 pm. This isn’t just due to a heavy lunch.(大多数人在下午早些时候,通常是下午1点到4点之间,会出现警觉性自然下降的情况。这不仅仅是因为午餐吃得太饱)”描述了下午人们警觉性下降的情况,空处应承接上文,解释下午人们警觉性下降的其他原因。E项(我们体内的生物钟创造了清醒和疲劳的周期)承接上文,指出人们下午警觉性下降还因为体内的生物钟创造了清醒和疲劳的周期。故选E。
39. 上文“Studies suggest that a short nap during this period can help boost alertness, and improve cognitive function without interfering with nighttime sleep.(研究表明,在这段时间内小睡一会儿有助于提高警觉性,改善认知功能,而且不会影响夜间睡眠)”指出在这段时间内小睡的好处,下文“Napping too long may result in waking up feeling worse than before. Once a nap extends beyond 30 minutes, the brain transitions into slow-wave sleep, making it much harder to wake up. And if a nap is taken too late in the day, it can make it harder to fall asleep at night.(午睡时间过长可能会导致醒来时感觉比以前更糟。一旦午睡时间超过30分钟,大脑就会进入慢波睡眠状态,让人更难醒来。如果午睡时间太晚,晚上就更难入睡)”指出午睡时间过长或过晚的坏处。C项(但有些事情值得注意)承上启下,指出午睡虽然有好处,但也有需要注意的地方。故选C。
40. 空处为段落主题句,根据下文“Keeping naps between 10 and 20 minutes prevents dizziness. The ideal time is before 2 pm—napping too late can push back the body’s natural sleep schedule. The best naps happen in a cool, dark, and quiet environment, similar to nighttime sleep conditions.(将午睡时间控制在10到20分钟之间可以防止头晕。

You may wonder what professional athletes eat for breakfast. The answer varies widely, ___56___ (influence) by personal taste, their sport, and even their training schedule.
However, two key principles ___57___ (be) universal. First, consistency matters. Most athletes stick to the same pre-competition breakfast for mental readiness. Second, and more ___58___(important), the need for fuel is supreme.
___59___ (give) their enormous energy consumption, athletes require far ___60___(many) calories and specific nutrients than the average person. Nutritionist Dr. Marc Bubbs explains that intense exercise increases ___61___ (rely) on carbohydrates. Therefore, an athlete’s diet must be packed with them. For example, while an average person’s breakfast smoothie might use water, ___62___ athlete’s version would use fruit juice and extra fruit to boost carbs. The goal is to “fuel for the demand” of each day—whether for competition, practice, ___63___ recovery.
In short, an athlete’s breakfast is less about a single perfect food and more about a strategic intake of energy, tailored precisely ___64___ the physical demands ahead. This ___65___(strategy) approach makes all the difference in their performance.
56. influenced 57. are 58. importantly 59. Given 60. more
61. reliance 62. an 63. or 64. to 65. strategic
故填 are。
故填 Given。
此处“far more calories... than...” 故填 more。
固定结构“whether... or...” 故填 or。
短语“be tailored to...” 故填 to。

When I adopted him, he had been rescued from death inside a tightly tied black trash bag abandoned right beside a garbage truck on the road. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning.
For my dog’s first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I’m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us.
We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn’t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything.
The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish.
However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash.
He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn’t see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic control impatiently signed me to move away so he could release the cars.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer—a moving garbage truck.

But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up. The harder I tried to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. The officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my might, but in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing I was running him too hard. I was fuming. My dog would run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.
Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer — a moving garbage truck. Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt him relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.
①抱起:scoop up /pick up
②蹒跚:stagger/totter
③靠近:draw closer to /approach

A
(新题材)Franz Boas’s description of Inuit (因纽特人) life in the 19th century illustrates the probable moral code of early humans.

(生活热点)You’re in the middle of the afternoon, eyelids heavy, focus slipping. You close your eyes for half an hour and wake up feeling recharged. But later that night, you’re tossing and turning in bed, wondering why you can’t fall asleep. ____36____
Napping is a double-edged sword. Done right, it’s a powerful way to recharge the brain, improve concentration, and support mental and physical health. Done wrong, it can leave you foggy, disoriented, and struggling to fall asleep later. ____37____
Most people experience a natural decline in alertness in the early afternoon, typically between 1 pm and 4 pm. This isn’t just due to a heavy lunch. ____38____ The early afternoon period is part of this cycle, which is why so many people feel sleepy at that time.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

(新题材)Franz Boas's description of Inuit(因纽特人)life in the 19 th century illustrates the probable moral
code of early humans. Here, norms (were unwritten and rarely expressed clearly, but were well understood
and taken to heart.Dishonest and violent behaviours were disapproved of;leadership, marriage and interactions
with other groups were loosely governed by traditions.Conflict was often resolved in musical battles.Because
arguing angrily leads to chaos,it was strongly discouraged. With life in the unforgiving Northern Canada being so
demanding, the Inuit's practical approach to morality made good sense.
The similarity of moral virtues across cultures is striking, even though the relative ranking of the virtues may
vary with a social group's history and environment.Typically, cruelty and cheating are discouraged, while
cooperation, humbleness and courage are praised. These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any
moralising religion or written law.Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared
mechanisms for learning and problem solving. Our social instincts ()include the intense desire to belong. The
approval of others is rewarding, while their disapproval is strongly disliked. These social emotions prepare our
brains to shape our behaviour according to the norms and values of our family and our community.More generally,
social instincts motivate us to learn how to behave in a socially complex world.
The mechanism involves a repurposed reward system originally used to develop habits important for self-care.
Our brains use the system to acquire behavioural patterns regarding safe routes home, efficient food gathering and
dangers to avoid.Good habits save time, energy and sometimes your life.Good social habits do something similar
in a social context. We learn to tell the truth, even when lying is self-serving;we help a grandparent even when it
is inconvenient. We acquire what we call a sense of right and wrong.
Social benefits are accompanied by social demands:we must get along, but not put up with too much.Hence
self-discipline is advantageous. In humans,a greatly enlarged brain boosts self-control,just as it boosts
problem-solving skills in the social as well as the physical world. These abilities are strengthened by our capacity
for language, which allows social practices to develop in extremely unobvious ways.
21.What can be inferred about the forming of the Inuit's moral code?
A.Living conditions were the drive.
B.Unwritten rules were the target.
C.Social tradition was the basis.
D.Honesty was the key.
22.What can we learn from this passage?
A Inconveniences are the cause of telling lies.
B.Basic human needs lead to universal norms
C.Language capacity is limited by self-control.
D.Written laws have great influence on virtues.
23.Which would be the best title for this passage?

mile wide and 50 miles long. Why,a reasonable follow-up question might go,would anyone want to get so close
to something so disruptive? These tourists,a study found, characterized their relationship to severe weather as a
“passion'”,describing their feelings about tornadoes using words like“enjoyment'',“fascination''and“love'.But
the main motivator seemed to be simple:Twisters are cool.
America has many more tornadoes than any other country, and its people have long regarded twisters with a
mix of fear, awe and thrilled pleasure.Fast-moving and dramatic, tornadoes have been irresistible parts for popular
entertainment.One needn't be an extreme-weather enthusiast,however,to take a brief and far-less dangerous tour:
of culture tornadoes have inspired and of the transformation of American society's feelings about these storms
from fear to excitement.
European colonists in the future United States were fascinated-and sometimes horrified-by their
new land's weather. In the Early Republic, some people began to write about tornadoes in terms of awe,and to
produce art that explored the phenomenon's natural beauty.Since the 1930s,American tornadoes have been less
deadly:the country has much better early-warning systems, fewer people live in rural areas and tornado activity
has largely shifted from the southeast to the thinly-populated Great Plains.
Storm-chasing-a scientific,thrill-seeking activity that most Americans found out about via the 1996 film
Twister,is still incomprehensible to many who don't practice it."I find it difficult to explain to someone who
hasn't chased what forces us to seek pleasure from risk,"wrote Jennifer Henderson,a crazy storm-chaser,
characterizing her feelings while chasing as"a sense of exposure and revelation (tightly coupled".

Most people experience a natural decline in alertness in the early afternoon, typically between 1 pm and 4 pm
This isn't just due to a heavy lunch.38 The early afteroon period is part of this cycle, which is why so
many people feel sleepy at that time.
Studies suggest that a short nap during this period can help boost alertness, and improve cognitive function
without interfering with nighttime sleep.39 Napping too long may result in waking up feeling worse
than before.Once a nap extends beyond 30 minutes, the brain transitions into slow-wave sleep, making it much
harder to wake up.And if a nap is taken too late in the day,it can make it harder to fall asleep at night.
40 Keeping naps between 10 and 20 minutes prevents dizziness. The ideal time is before 2
pm-napping too late can push back the body's natural sleep schedule. The best naps happen in a cool, dark, and
quiet environment, similar to nighttime sleep conditions.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I'm writing to ask for your advice on a writing project for our school's “Chinese Culture Month.” I've written a new version of the story “Yu Gong Moves the Mountains,” setting it in the future where people use teamwork and technology to solve a huge problem together.
I would really appreciate it if you could take a look. I'm hoping you can help me improve how the story is told to make it more interesting, and make the conversations and scenes feel more real. I also want to make sure the cultural ideas behind the story come across clearly.
Thank you so much for your time and help. Your feedback would be very important to me.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
