B “A man does not know his true identity when he does not know the background of where he comes from.” says Paul Ninson, a Ghanaian photojournalist. Here in New York, thousands of miles from Ghana, he found numerous visual images of life in Africa, past and present, in the archives (档案室) of the city’s libraries, galleries and museums. This led to an idea: create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring the African story home. Deeply influenced by his grandparents’ storytelling traditions, Ninson decided to pursue a career in photography. He left Ghana in 2019 to seek a formal education in photojournalism at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City. There, he read the center’s hundreds of photobooks while in Ghana, he only had access to five or six of such books. As he ventured deeper into the city, he discovered more visual histories of Africa than he had experienced at home. This led to his idea to create a library in Africa that held such stories. With characteristic determination, Ninson began searching New York City for books to ship to Ghana. He searched secondhand stores, engaged in online bidding wars and reached out for publishers donations. He maxed out credit cards and filled his apartment with over 30,000 volumes. With help from a friend Brandon Stanton, a GoFundMe campaign raised $1.2 million, enabling shipment of the collection to Ghana. In December 2022, the local library Dikan Center opened near the Gulf of Guinea. It offers free public access to photobooks documenting Africa’s past and present. Beyond its collection, Dikan Center provides workshops, fellowships, and seminars on visual storytelling, empowering a new generation to reshape Africa’s narrative. Local artist Daniella Afful sees Dikan Center as transformative: “It has boosted art and photography, giving hope for preserving our history and making history.” 4. What inspired Ninson to build a photobook library? A. His interest in history books. B. His fancy of New York libraries. C His ambition to make a fortune. D. His desire to bring Africa culture back home. 5. Why did Ninson go to New York in 2019? A. To raise money for a library building. B. To improve himself as a photographer. C. To seek his family roots and traditions. D. To collect books about African history. 6. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. Ninson was involved in a war. B. Ninson used his own money to pay for books. C. Brandon Stanton donated some books to him. D. African government arranged to ship the books back. 7. What can be inferred about the library from Daniella Afful’s words? A. It provides more job opportunities. B. It has transformed people’s hobbies. C. It is helpful to preserve local history. D. It is widely welcomed by the natives. C Once every 7 to 10 years, Nevada’s Pyramid Lake experiences an algae (藻类) bloom so significant that its color changes from dark blue to blue (蓝绿色). This phenomenon is known as “whiting”. Located in a remote desert area of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes’ Reservation, about 40 miles northeast of Reno, pyramid Lake is famous for the whiting events that occur every decade or so. Over the course of a few weeks, the water turns light blue, blue, and in rare cases, even white. This phenomenon is well-documented but not very well-understood. What scientists know is that contributing factors include high water temperatures, algae bloom and increased calcium concentrations. Interestingly, whiting events are not dangerous to the aquatic (水生的) life. However, the same cannot be said for land life, including humans. “Pyramid Lake is currently experiencing a temporary poisonous algae bloom” pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe said in a post, adding that exposure to the blue water could cause many diseases. Luckily, pyramid Lake has been closed to the public. Experts say that animals can suffer from shock or even die if exposed to the poisonous algae in the water, and have urged people approaching pyramid Lake during the whiting event not to take their pets with them. Satellite images showed that the whiting event started in a small corner of the lake and gradually diffused, turning the water blue. It then covered the entire surface of the water, and experts have no idea how long it will last. Photos of the unusually colored water have been spreading on the Internet, with many comparing pyramid Lake with tropical locations like the Maldives. But while the lake may be beautiful to look at, it’s important to remember that the turquoise water is poisonous. 8. Which is one of the causes of whiting events? A. High water temperatures. B. Poisons from other waters. C. An increase in marine life. D. Too much pollution. 9. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. The appearance of algae is common. B. Being exposed to the turquoise water is harmful. C. pyramid Lake has caused many deaths up to now. D. pyramid Lake will be open to the public if necessary. 10. What does the underlined word “diffused” in paragraph 5 mean? A Lightened. B. Changed. C. Declined. D. Enlarged. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. pyramid Lake Is Seriously Pollution B. pyramid Lake Attracts Many Visitors C. The Algae in pyramid Lake kills Many Pets D. An Algae Bloom Causes pyramid Lake to Turn Turquoise D Scientists in the Netherlands have created a soft-bodied robot that’s powered by air. When you think of a robot, you might picture something with a lot of sensors, and inflexible metal arms controlled by a computer. But scientists at the AMOLF institute in the Netherlands have come up with a robot that has no brain and no sensors. “I was in the lab, working on another project, and had to bend a tube to stop air from going through it. The tube started oscillating (振荡) loudly at very high frequency,” says Alberto Comoretto, a roboticist. Then, he set up a high-speed camera and recorded the movement. He found that when there was a kink (扭结) in the tube, the increasing pressure pushed that kink along the tube’s length. That caused the pressure to decrease, which enabled a new kink to appear and the cycle to repeat. Comoretto’s team was excited as the waving tube shared airflow physics with the famous dancing “Fly guys” at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Comoretto’s team decided to build a robot using the Fly guys’ physics to achieve natural, almost lifelike movement. They finally made it. The robot can cover a distance equal to thirty times its body length in a second. That’d be like the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, running the 100-meter race in 1.71 seconds. It can go over uneven ground. Hitting a wall, it turns on its own. When dropped into water, it begins moving in a new way that allows it to swim. “Now when it hits a wall, it starts to turn left. If it lands in water, it starts to swim backwards. We didn’t come up with that — it just happens,” says Johannes Overvelde, a AMOLF researcher. “We understand the system but need a better grasp of how to design specific functionalities.” And this grasp will be needed for any applications that require something more than tiny robots that can run, swim, or both. This is what the team invests more to address next. 12. Why did Comoretto record the tube by using the high-speed camera? A. To observe its airflow speed. B. To analyze its movement causes. C. To examine its material properties. D. To measure its oscillation frequency. 13. What is one feature of Comoretto’s robot? A. It copies human arm motions any time. B. It moves much faster than Usain Bolt. C. It needs training for an extended period. D. It adjusts automatically to its conditions. 14. What is the team’s remaining challenge according to Overvelde? A. Designing the robots of larger sizes. B. Increasing the robot’s movement speed. C. Trying to control the robot’s behavior. D. Reducing production costs for the robot. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. A Brainless Soft Robot Running on Air B. The Physics Behind Air-powered Systems C. From Lab accident to Robot Innovation D. Future Applications of Soft-bodied Robots Walking is a powerful tool for both our physical and mental health — perhaps even more powerful than we think. Walking an estimated 21 minutes a day can reduce your risk of heart disease by 30%, according to a Harvard Health special report published in 2017. The report also suggests that walking has been shown to lower blood pressure, and keep you mentally sharp. ____16____ Besides, it’s also a free workout that doesn’t require any equipment or much planning. So how to make walking part of your day? Here’s some advice. If you need motivation, try walking with a friend. Going for a walk with friends is a great way to create responsibility for both you and your walking buddies (伙伴). Think about it: You’re more likely to put on your sports shoes if your friend is heading over to meet you for a walk you agreed to earlier in the week. And you don’t have to task your friend group with high-stress, quick-paced walks. ____17____ Plus, if you’re someone who likes to walk and talk, you’ll get some enjoyable conversation and laughter out of a walk with a friend. You can listen to music on your walk. If you prefer to walk by yourself, you may save a good audiobook or soundtrack (电影配乐) for your walks to make them more enjoyable. ____18____ If you can’t fit in the full 21minutes a day, start small. Between work, family duties and household tasks, life is busy. ____19____. If you can’t fit in the recommended 21minutes of walking a day, start small. Task yourself with a minute-long walk near your house this afternoon, or take that 10-minute work check-in call as you walk around your block. ____20____. A. No amount of time is too short. B. Anyone can benefit from walking. C. Walking keeps you from prolonged sitting. D. In other words, walking has serious health benefits. E. As long as you get out there, you’re benefiting your body. F. Taking time for yourself may not be possible right now and that’s OK. G. C. His ambition to make a fortune. D. His desire to bring Africa culture back home. 5. Why did Ninson go to New York in 2019? A. To raise money for a library building. B. To improve himself as a photographer. C To seek his family roots and traditions. D 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段“A man does not know his true identity when he does not know the background of where he comes from. (一个人若不了解自己来自何方的背景,就无法认清自己的真实身份。)”以及“Here in New York, thousands of miles from Ghana, he found numerous visual images of life in Africa, past and present, in the archives (档案室) of the city’s libraries, galleries and museums. This led to an idea: create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring the African story home. (在纽约这样一个远离加纳的遥远地方,他从这座城市的图书馆、画廊和博物馆的藏品中找到了大量有关非洲过去和现在的生活景象的视觉资料。这一发现让他有了一个想法:在加纳建立一个摄影书籍图书馆,将非洲的故事带回家乡。)”可知,尼森建造摄影书籍图书馆的初衷是想将非洲文化带回国内的愿望。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“He left Ghana in 2019 to seek a formal education in photojournalism at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City. (他于2019年离开加纳,前往纽约市的国际摄影中心(ICP)寻求摄影新闻方面的正规教育。)”可知,他离开加纳去纽约是为了接受新闻摄影方面的教育来提升自己的摄影能力。故选B。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“He maxed out credit cards and filled his apartment with over 30,000 volumes. (他将信用卡额度用到了极限,并在自己的公寓里堆满了超过3万册的书籍。)”可知,尼森用自己的钱购买了书籍。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Local artist Daniella Afful sees Dikan Center as transformative: “It has boosted art and photography, giving hope for preserving our history and making history.” (当地艺术家丹妮拉·阿弗尔认为迪坎中心具有变革性意义:“它推动了艺术和摄影的发展,为保护和创造我们的历史带来了希望。”)”可知,这个图书馆有助于保存当地的历史。故选C。 C Once every 7 to 10 years, Nevada’s Pyramid Lake experiences an algae (藻类) bloom so significant that its color changes from dark blue to blue (蓝绿色). A. Lightened. B. Changed. C. Declined. D. Enlarged. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. pyramid Lake Is Seriously Pollution B. pyramid Lake Attracts Many Visitors C. The Algae in pyramid Lake kills Many Pets D. An Algae Bloom Causes pyramid Lake to Turn Turquoise 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第二段“Over the course of a few weeks, the water turns light blue, blue, and in rare cases, even white. This phenomenon is well-documented but not very well-understood. What scientists know is that contributing factors include high water temperatures, algae bloom and increased calcium concentrations. (在几周的时间里,水会变成浅蓝色、蓝色,在极少数情况下甚至会变成白色。这一现象有据可查,但对其理解尚不充分。科学家已知的造成该现象的因素包括高水温、藻类水华和钙浓度升高)”可知,高水温是“白化”现象的成因之一。故选A项。 根据第三段“exposure to the blue water could cause many diseases (接触这种蓝绿色的水可能会引发多种疾病)”可知,接触蓝绿色的湖水是有害的。 根据第五段“Satellite images showed that the whiting event started in a small corner of the lake and gradually diffused, turning the water blue. It then covered the entire surface of the water D Scientists in the Netherlands have created a soft-bodied robot that’s powered by air. Future Applications of Soft-bodied Robots 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. F. The 38. asleep 39. to see 40. accidentally 41. and 42. was fixing 43. threw 44. son's 45. how 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述的是正在修车的Henry拯救了挂在六楼公寓的阳台上,即将要掉下来的小孩Eric的故事。 故填The。 故填to see。 故填and。 故填was fixing。 故填how。 A Chinese Classical Poetry Contest _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】作文范文 A Chinese Classical Poetry Contest A Chinese Poetry Contest was successfully held in our school today.
