At 12,my father decided to take me on a trip to France.I had never been out of the country before,so
I was very excited. My aunt,my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable

sites in Paris.None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.
We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our mastering what is
honestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train.
We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no
one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt afraid when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his
grandchild noticed us and came to help.He spoke no English,so in broken French we tried to explain.
When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then
boarded with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (and he didn't want us to miss it.This
kind man rode a train for an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where
they wanted to be.He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted our
hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way,he boarded the train to return the way he had come.
What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans
think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to persuade them to change their minds with
this very story.

One of the top sources of added sugar in children's diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (H).
A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of
high-sugar cereals when it's aimed directly at kids under 12-but not when it is designed for adults.
In the study, researchers looked at all cereals bought by 77,000 U.S.households over a nine-year
period, between 2008 and 2017.They also looked at Nielsen ratings data, which closely tracked all the ads
that people in a household saw-both children and adults. The study showed a clear connection:more ads
for children led to more sugary cereal being bought by families. But ads for adults did not lead to more
buying. And these extensive data also showed that behaviors that were learned in childhood could track
高一英语试卷第4页共8页
into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over a lifetime.
The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food ads aimed at children with those aimed
at adults. The findings offer new evidence of how food marketing turns children into the"final weapon"in
influencing family spending because they continuously ask their parents to buy-an idea known as
“pester power”.
The food industry started the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative,a voluntary effort
to police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a promise to cut back on marketing unhealthy
foods to children under 12-later revised to under 13.A new study conducted in 2024 showed that
children's contact with cereal ads on TV programming has dropped sharply.
But Lindsay Smith Taillie,a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
says these voluntary efforts aren't making a difference.Advertisements, like kids'eyeballs, are moving
online, making it even harder to know what marketing children are shown,Taillie notes.

Anyone who has taken a standardized test knows that writing an essay in 20 minutes or less takes
serious brain power.Having access to artificial intelligence (AI)would certainly lighten the mental
load().But as a recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
suggests, that help may come at a cost.
Over the course of a series of essay-writing sessions, students working with as well as without an AI
chatbot had their brain activity measured.Across the board, the AI users exhibited markedly lower brain
activity in areas associated with creative functions and attention.
Whether AI will leave people's brains weak in the long term remains an open question.Researchers
behind this study have stressed that further work is needed to establish a definitive causal link between
elevated AI use and weakened brains. After all,the study had a tiny sample size and focused on a single
narrow task.
Moreover,generative-AI tools clearly seek to lighten people's mental loads,as many other
technologies do.Concerns about this kind of offloading aren't new.As long ago as the 5th century BC,
Socrates was quoted as complaining that writing is not "a potion()for remembering, but for
reminding".Calculators spare cashiers from computing a bill.Navigation apps remove the need for
map-reading.And yet few would argue that people are less capable as a result.
There is little evidence to suggest that letting machines handle users'mental tasks alters()the
高一英语试卷第5页共8页
brain's capacity for thinking. But the worry is that generative AI allows one to offload a thought process.
And once the brain has developed a taste for offloading,it can be a hard habit to kick.As one user put it,"I
rely so much on AI that I don't think I'd know how to solve certain problems without it."
The technology is so young that, for many tasks, the human brain is still the sharpest tool in the
toolkit. But in time both the consumers of AI and its regulators will have to assess whether its wider
benefits outweigh any cognitive (costs. If stronger evidence emerges that AI makes people less
intelligent,will they care?
37.What does paragraph 3 emphasize about the MIT study?
A.The procedures it followed.
B.The limitations in its design.
C.The conclusion it has drawn.
D.The diversity among its participants.
38.Accor ding to Socrates, what negative consequence could writing have?
A.People would avoid using reminders.
B.People would stop thinking independently
C.People would rely less on their own memory.
D.People would care less about the spoken word.
39.What point does the user's remark in paragraph 5 illustrate?
A.AI can change users'mental capacity.
B.AI is not widely available to the public.
C.AI can encourage users'mental laziness.
D.AI is not capable of solving every problem.
40.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Will AI Make You Stupid?
B.How AI Lets You Offload Tasks
C.Why AI Affects Your Thinking Abilities
D.Is AI a Mental Shortcut You Can Easily Quit?

I can't remember how many times I've been asked,"41?'My answer would always be the
same:I'd want the ability to know what people are thinking.Absolutely, flying and invisibility (had
crossed my mind. But every time,I'd always settle on reading people's minds.
In a friend group,I'm usually the quieter one-the one who observes everyone else interacting and
occasionally voices my opinion.42.Whether we admit it or not,we always keep some thoughts
to ourselves.It's human nature,after all.
Yet our tendency to hide certain feelings and unintentionally (judge others keeps me on edge.
It's what makes me want to know what people are thinking.I'm constantly afraid of what people think of
me.Do I look bad?Did I do something wrong?
43.I overthink people's reactions,movements and even words.I overthink past
conversations I had, wondering what I could have said instead to make me sound less stupid or more
genuine(真诚的).
Ultimately,I've come to realize that it shouldn't really matter what other people think.44,it's
an overwhelmingly(压倒性地)exhausting ability to have..
Indeed,it's not worth wasting time, energy and emotions worrying about whether you appear cool to
someone. You only have so much control over that.45
