Eva, the Belgian Malinois, is home now, getting a well-deserved rest surrounded by new toys after nearly dying while protecting her human from a mountain lion.
The attack happened on May 16 in northern California when 24-year-old Erin Wilson headed down a path toward the Trinity River before she found herself cornered by a mountain lion. “I was just walking down the slope with the dog running ahead of’ me. I turned around and there was this cat just growling at me and it attacked me,” Wilson told NPR. “I screamed for Eva and she came running.”
Mountain lion attacks on humans are incredibly rare. Since 1890, California has recorded only six fatal mountain lion attacks because of the animal’s generally shy, reclusive (独处的) nature. Their preferred prey is deer, which are normally in abundance in their forested habitat, but recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Wilson thought that these conditions made the sudden appearance of a slim woman look like an attractive option.
To protect her human, Eva leapt between Wilson and the lion, tackling the wild cat and embarked on a life-and-death struggle between the two animals. After a short fight, the mountain lion got its jaws around Eva’s head and Wilson fought to free her dog, hitting the lion with rocks in an attempt to break its grip. Eventually, Wilson ran back to her truck and flagged down passing motorist Sharon Houston Fetching an iron bar from her truck. Wilson and Houston ran back down the trail and their combined efforts managed to frighten the big cat off.
Wounded herself and shaken by the experience, Wilson still managed to carry Eva back to the Animal Hospital. The 2-year-old dog didn’t need surgery, but her wounds were still extensive. Eva left the animal hospital on May 19 with surgical tape wrapped around both her front paws, and the veterinarian said she might lose sight in her left eye.
24. What made Erin Wilson the target of the mountain lion?
A. The abundant deer in their forested habitat.
B. The lack of prey due to extreme conditions.
C. The mountain lion’s shy and reclusive nature.
D. The slim and attractive appearance of Wilson.
25. What do the underlined words “embarked on” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Proceeded with.
B. Dawned on.
C. Wrapped up.
D. Kicked off
26. How did Wilson drive the mountain lion off?
A. She freed a dog and threw rocks at it fiercely.
B. She stopped a passing driver and broke its grip.
C. She gathered local people and shouted loudly at it.
D. She used a tool and scared it away with another driver.
27. Which of the following can best describe Eva according to the passage?

Archaeologists have discovered a roughly 13-kilometer part of the remains of Qinzhidao, a military road built in the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-207 BC), in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
The discovery was made during an archaeological survey started in 2024 by the cultural relics protection research institute in Yulin City. The survey aimed to record where the ancient road remains are located and what condition they are in now.
Historical records show that Qinzhidao was a very important military road built by the order of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, who united China for the first time. This huge construction project played a major role in uniting and developing ancient China.
The newly found part of the road lies in the city's Hengshan District. Although the remains are in bad shape, the road still shows a very straight path.
Scientists have confirmed nine continuous straight cuts through mountains, a section of slope built with hard-packed earth, and many signs of old road surfaces worn down by travel and solid bases made of hard-packed earth along the road.
Besides, a small settlement site from the Qin and Han dynasties (221 BC-220 AD) was found right beside the ancient road. It is thought to have been used as a post house or a repair stop, and several pieces of typical pottery and tile from that time were found there.
The latest findings offer new evidence for drawing the complete map of Qinzhidao's route, said the institute.
28. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To blame the poor state of the remains.
B. To explain the history of the Qin Dynasty.
C. To announce a new archaeological find.
D. To describe the function of posthouses.
29. Which of the following was NOT mentioned as an archaeological finding along the road section?
A. Straight-line cuts in mountains.
B. Remains of ancient vehicles and weapons.
C. Traces of heavily used paths and built-up road bases.
D. A small village from the Qin and Han times.
30. What can we infer about the builders of Qinzhidao from the description of the road’s very straight path?
A. They lacked advanced surveying technology.
B. They prioritized speed over quality in construction.
C. They possessed remarkable planning and engineering skills.
D. They avoided challenging geographical features.
31. What is the attitude of the researchers towards this discovery?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Anxious.

(社会热点)Thousands of years ago, texts appeared on animal bones, bronzes, bamboo slips, and silk brocades (织锦) before they were written on paper. But now these ancient Chinese texts have a “new container” in the modern age. Recently, a research team from Nanjing Agricultural University has rolled out Xunzi, a large language model (LLM) and XunziChat in association with Gulian, a leading ancient Chinese text publisher.
Wang Dongbo, the leader of the research team, said that the large language model was named after Xunzi because Xunzi was not only a prominent Confucian philosopher during the late Warring States Period (475-221BC), but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics (语言学) in ancient China.
When asked why he and his partners made the large language model, Wang explained that “traditional Chinese characters, vertical layout, the absence of pausing and punctuation (句读) are all obstacles that readers have to overcome when they read traditional texts”.
To create Xunzi the LLM, Wang and his partners first needed to do a lot of research. Since 2013, his team has worked tirelessly to digitize Chinese classics like the Siku Quanshu, or the Complete Library in Four Sections. Finally their efforts seem to have paid off. Now Xunzi the LLM can tag (标记), translate, punctuate, and understand scraps (片段) of ancient Chinese texts. It can even do part-of-speech analysis and retrieve specific information, such as names, events, and places from a text. With this LLM, ancient Chinese texts can be accessed by more Chinese people, including students. Through Xunzi’s retrieval function, users can get more specific cultural information based on courtesy names. “The model can help us mine for more information hidden in our cultural legacy and find unnoticed models and connections,” said Wang.
But Wang and his team don’t simply focus on target users in China. They are aiming at the rest of the world as well. They have shared the LLM on GitHub and other websites, allowing users to download and use it for free. “Our team is committed to the philosophy of making our data and model globally accessible. We hope this will encourage more people to appreciate traditional Chinese culture,” Wang explained.
32. Why was the large language model named Xunzi?
A. Because the research team leader’s name is Xunzi.
B. Because Xunzi was a leading publisher of ancient texts.
C. Because the model can understand ancient Chinese texts perfectly.
D. Because Xunzi was a famous philosopher and pioneer in linguistics.
33. Which of the following statements best describes the LLM (Xunzi) developed by the Nanjing Agricultural University research team?
A. It is a traditional method of preserving ancient Chinese texts.
B. It is named after a famous writer from the Warring States Period.
C. It is intended simply to improve Chinese students’reading skills.
D. It digitizes and enhances the understanding of ancient Chinese texts for a wider audience.
34. What is Wang Dongbo’s attitude towards making the large language model Xunzi globally accessible?
A. Enthusiastic. B. Hesitant. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
35. What is the research team’s ultimate goal in sharing the LLM globally?
A. To make money by selling the model.
B. To dominate the market for language models.
C. To get traditional Chinese culture more accessible to more people.
D. To gain further recognition from the international academic community.

Tennis is an incredibly mental sport. ____36____ But it is also an incredibly difficult sport to play well.
It is very easy to self-destruct (自我毁灭) when playing tennis if you let your expectations and ego get the better of you. So, simply playing the ball that is in front of you is the simplest way to approach the game, along with taking each point at a time.
That being said, it is much easier said than done. ____37____ Even if it is as simple as playing to your opponent’s backhand as much as possible, or aiming to hit as many cross court (对角线球) balls as you can, it is important to have a plan of attack if you want to be successful on the court.
____38____ You may have the best plan in the world, but if you aren’t performing well enough to execute it or your opponent cottons on (领悟) what you’re trying to do, you’ll need to adapt, improvise and overcome. Adapting to new conditions, court surfaces, balls and playing styles is all part of becoming a better tennis player!
____39____ This means you need to be incredibly resilient (坚韧的) to play good tennis and overcome hardship. Don’t be too much bothered by some points you lose. Just learn from your mistakes but not let them get you down.
Tennis is also about playing the big points well and understanding that not all points hold the same weight across the course of a match. Putting disappointment behind you and trying to play the next point with a positive attitude can be very difficult to do. ____40____
A. However, being flexible is also important.
B. You will always have to have some form of strategy.
C. However, it is a key part of becoming a better tennis player.
D. It can bring with it a whole host of physical and mental benefits.
E. Every backhand shot you hit is what you throw at your opponent.
F. Perhaps the most obvious benefits tennis offers are the physical ones.
G. The scoring system in tennis means you can win more points and still lose a match!

Hearing that one neighbor had just welcomed a new litter, Allen, a 9- year- old boy, rushed to see the newborn cats. However, during his visit, Allen noticed one of the cats wasn’t moving due to disability on its hind (后面的) legs. So while the other little cats were exploring their surroundings, this one stayed behind.
Allen was significantly affected by the scene of this lonesome cat. He returned home and started to wonder whether he could do anything to help. When the boy told his mother about that, the mother recalled a video about pet wheelchairs.
They finally found the video on YouTube, in which an animal lover, Addy, shared a heartwarming and innovative project: building a wheelchair for a pet cat with mobility issues due to a hind- leg injury. As a caring pet owner, Addy took viewers through the DIY process of making a custom wheelchair to aid her cat’s movement and improve its quality of life. She began by measuring the cat and based on the measurements, cut the plastic pipes to make a frame (支架). Then she connected the pipes and attached the wheels to the back end of the frame. Finally, she added a harness (保护带) to ensure it was fit and comfortable for the cat.
Seeing the cat in the wheelchair moving around happily with the support, Allen thought that would be the best option for the little cat.
But the wheelchair in the video seemed too big and too heavy for a newborn cat. Where could he find the suitable materials?
His mother unearthed an old bag from the cupboard, whose belt was just fine for the the harness. As for the frame, they searched the storage room in their house and found an old umbrella, whose frame provided enough thin iron bars that were durable and light. But they were difficult for him to cut off. Allen thought his father could help. However, where could they find the small wheels?

Eva, the Belgian Malinois, is home now, getting a well-deserved rest surrounded by new toys after nearly dying while protecting her human from a mountain lion.
The attack happened on May 16 in northern California when 24-year-old Erin Wilson headed down a path toward the Trinity River before she found herself cornered by a mountain lion. “I was just walking down the slope with the dog running ahead of’ me. I turned around and there was this cat just growling at me and it attacked me,” Wilson told NPR. “I screamed for Eva and she came running. ”

C. Supportive. D. Anxious.
D

A. Heroic and loyal.
B. Obedient and adorable.
C. Friendly and dependable.
D. Courageous and naughty.
B 25. D 26. D 27. A
根据文章第三段“Their preferred prey is deer, which are normally in abundance in their forested habitat, but recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Wilson thought that these conditions made the sudden appearance of a slim woman look like an attractive option.(它们最喜欢的猎物是鹿,通常在它们的森林栖息地有大量的鹿,但最近的干旱使一些地区的食物短缺。Wilson认为,这些条件使得一个突然出现的苗条女人看起来是一个有吸引力的选择。)”可知,Erin Wilson认为自己成为山狮的目标是因为最近的干旱使当地鹿极度缺乏。故选B。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线单词前的“To protect her human, Eva leapt between Wilson and the lion, tackling the wild cat(Eva跳到了Wilson和狮子之间,抓住了狮子,)”以及空后的“a life-and-death struggle between the two animals.(两只动物之间的生死搏斗。)” 选项A“Proceeded with (继续)”;选项B“Dawned on (开始理解)”;选项C“Wrapped up (包装)”;选项D“Kicked off (开始)”。故选D。
根据文章第四段“After a short fight, the mountain lion got its jaws around Eva’s head and Wilson fought to free her dog. hitting the lion with rocks in an attempt to break its grip. Eventually, Wilson ran back to her truck and flagged down passing motorist Sharon Houston Fetching an iron bar from her truck. Wilson and Houston ran back down the trail and their combined efforts managed to frighten the big cat off.(经过短暂的搏斗,山狮咬住了Eva的头,Wilson奋力解救了她的狗。用石头砸狮子,试图挣脱它的束缚。最后,Wilson跑回她的卡车,示意路过的司机Sharon Houston停下来,从她的卡车上取下一根铁棒。Wilson和Houston沿着小路跑回去,她们的共同努力成功地把这只山狮吓跑了。)”可知,Wilson使用了石头砸狮子,然后从一个过路的司机Houston的车上取下一根铁棒,一起吓跑了山狮。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Wilson told NPR. “I screamed for Eva and she came running. ”(Wilson告诉NPR。“我尖叫着喊Eva,她就跑过来了。”)”以及文章第四段“To protect her human, Eva leapt between Wilson and the lion, tackling the wild cat and embarked on a life-and-death struggle between the two animals.(为了保护她的主人,Eva跳到了Wilson和狮子之间,抓住了狮子,开始了两只动物之间的生死搏斗。)” 故选A。

C. Supportive. D. Anxious.
C 29. B 30. C 31. C
根据第一段“Archaeologists have discovered a roughly 13-kilometer part of the remains of Qinzhidao...(考古学家发现了一段长约13公里的秦直道遗址……)”
原文第五段明确指出考古学家确认了“nine continuous straight cuts through mountains”(对应A项“山中笔直切口”)以及“many signs of old road surfaces worn down by travel and solid bases made of hard-packed earth”(对应C项“常用路径痕迹与人工路基”)。原文第六段提到发现了“a small settlement site... right beside the ancient road”(对应D项“秦汉时期的小型村落”)。
题干关键词指向原文第四段:“…the road still shows a very straight path”以及第五段“nine continuous straight cuts through mountains”。
根据文章最后一段“The latest findings offer new evidence for drawing the complete map...(最新发现为绘制完整路线图提供了新证据)”,以及文中使用的“very important(非常重要)”、“major role(重要作用)”、“confirmed(已确认)”等措辞,可以判断研究人员对此发现的态度是积极且肯定的。
D
D 33. D 34. A 35. C

根据第二段“Wang Dongbo, the leader of the research team, said that the large language model was named after Xunzi because Xunzi was not only a prominent Confucian philosopher during the late Warring States Period (475-221BC), but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics (语言学) in ancient China.(该研究团队的负责人王东波表示,这种大型语言模型之所以以荀子的名字命名,是因为荀子不仅是战国末期(公元前475-221年)著名的儒家哲学家,而且是中国古代提出和解释语言学理论的先驱)”可知,大型语言模型被命名为荀子,是因为荀子不仅是战国时期晚期著名的儒家哲学家,还是中国古代语言学理论和解释方面的先驱。故选D项。
根据第四段“Now Xunzi the LLM can tag (标记), translate, punctuate, and understand scraps (片段) of ancient Chinese texts. It can even do part-of-speech analysis and retrieve specific information, such as names, events, and places from a text. With this LLM, ancient Chinese texts can be accessed by more Chinese people, including students.(现在,法学硕士荀子可以标记、翻译、加标点,并理解中国古代文本的片断。它甚至可以进行词性分析,并从文本中检索特定信息,如名称、事件和位置。通过这个LLM,中国的古代文本可以被更多的中国人,包括学生接触到)”可知,它是一种现代技术,能够数字化并促进更广泛的受众理解古代中文文本。故选D项。
34. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“But Wang and his team don’t simply focus on target users in China. (但Wang和他的团队并不仅仅关注中国的目标用户。他们也瞄准了世界其他地区。他们在GitHub和其他网站上分享了LLM,允许用户免费下载和使用。“我们的团队致力于让我们的数据和模型在全球范围内都可以访问。我们希望这将鼓励更多的人欣赏中国传统文化。”)”可知,WangDongbo 对于让大型语言模型 Xunzi在全球范围内可访问持有积极的态度。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Our team is committed to the philosophy of making our data and model globally accessible. We hope this will encourage more people to appreciate traditional Chinese culture(我们的团队致力于让我们的数据和模型在全球范围内都可以访问。我们希望这将鼓励更多的人欣赏中国传统文化)”可知,最终目标是让更多人接触到中国传统文化。故选C项。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
36. 以及下文“But it is also an incredibly difficult sport to play well.”(但这也是一项非常困难的运动。) It can bring with it a whole host of physical and mental benefits.(它可以带来一系列的身体和精神上的好处。)
37. 根据上文“That being said, it is much easier said than done.”(话虽如此,说起来容易做起来难。) 以及下文“Even if it is as simple as playing to your opponent’s backhand as much as possible, or aiming to hit as many cross court (对角线球) balls as you can, it is important to have a plan of attack if you want to be successful on the court.”(即使是尽可能多地打对手的反手球,或者尽可能多地打交叉球这样简单的事情,如果你想在球场上取得成功,有一个进攻计划是很重要的。) You will always have to have some form of strategy.(你总是需要某种形式的策略。)
该段下文“You may have the best plan in the world, but if you aren’t performing well enough to execute it or your opponent cottons on (领悟) what you’re trying to do, you’ll need to adapt, improvise and overcome. Adapting to new conditions, court surfaces, balls and playing styles is all part of becoming a better tennis player!”(你可能有世界上最好的计划,但是如果你的表现不够好,或者你的对手不知道你想要做什么,你就需要适应、即兴发挥和克服。 However, being flexible is also important.(然而,灵活性也很重要。) 故选A项。
39. 根据下文“This means you need to be incredibly resilient to play good tennis and overcome hardship. Don’t be too much bothered by some points you lose. Just learn from your mistakes but not let them get you down.”(这意味着你需要非常有韧性才能打好网球,克服困难。 The scoring system in tennis means you can win more points and still lose a match!(网球的计分系统意味着你可以赢得更多的分数,但仍然会输掉比赛!)
40. 根据上文“Putting disappointment behind you and trying to play the next point with a positive attitude can be very difficult to do.”(把失望抛在脑后,努力以积极的态度打下一分,这是很难做到的。) However, it is a key part of becoming a better tennis player.(然而,这是成为一个更好的网球运动员的关键部分。)

56. tracing 57. growth 58. chores 59. sleepy 60. for
61. typically 62. is seen 63. purify 64. to air 65. that
此处为固定短语make way for意为“为……让路”符合句意。故填for。
故填is seen。
故填to air。
故填that。

Dear Alex,
It’s great to hear about the "Chinese Digital Culture Week"! I highly recommend showcasing the revival of Hanfu (traditional Han clothing).
For the online exhibit, an online interactive gallery would be perfect. You could display high-quality photos and short videos of Hanfu in various styles—from historical recreations to modern, daily-wear designs. Adding a “virtual try-on” feature or a simple quiz about different dynasties' clothing would make it engaging for teenagers.
To prepare, collect visually striking images and videos, write clear bilingual captions explaining their historical and cultural significance, and ensure the website is user-friendly. A live stream featuring a Hanfu enthusiast demonstrating how to wear it could be the highlight.
This topic is visually impressive and deeply cultural. I believe it will captivate your audience!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
注意:
Allen suddenly spotted a familiar item in the corner of the storage room.

Allen suddenly spotted a familiar item in the corner of the storage room. That was his toy car. There were four small wheels on it! So pleased was Allen that he grasped it immediately. He carefully took off the wheels from the toy car which had accompanied him through his childhood. Now its wheels would aid him to give a helping hand to a poor cat. Allen got all the necessary materials for the wheelchair ready. Then he went to the neighbor’s to measure the cat and came back with the data. His father helped to cut the umbrella frame into several bars and assisted Allen in connecting the components. (97 words)
Together, they built a tiny wheelchair for the little cat. The caring boy was excited and proud when he looked at the wheelchair. It was a joint effort. Holding the little wheelchair, Allen rushed to the neighbor’s. Witnessing the little cat placed in the small wheelchair, Allen was looking forward to the moment that it would move around by itself. As he had expected, the little cat rose to its feet with the support for the hind legs. It did move, though slowly! Seeing this, Allen couldn’t help clapping and jumping with joy. His kindness and creation did make a difference to the little creature. (95words)

(Thousands of years ago, texts appeared on animal bones, bronzes, bamboo slips, and silk
brocades (before they were written on paper. But now these ancient Chinese texts have a "new container"in
the modern age.Recently,a research team from Nanjing Agricultural University has rolled out Xunzi,a large
language model (LLM)and XunziChat in association with Gulian,a leading ancient Chinese text publisher.
Wang Dongbo, the leader of the research team, said that the large language model was named after Xunzi
because Xunzi was not only a prominent Confucian philosopher during the late Warring States Period
(475-221BC),but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics (in ancient China.
When asked why he and his partners made the large language model,Wang explained that "traditional
Chinese characters, vertical layout, the absence of pausing and punctuation (are all obstacles that readers
have to overcome when they read traditional texts".
To create Xunzi the LLM,Wang and his partners first needed to do a lot of research.Since 2013,his team has
worked tirelessly to digitize Chinese classics like the Siku Quanshu,or the Complete Library in Four Sections.
Finally their efforts seem to have paid off.Now Xunzi the LLM can tag ()translate,punctuate,and
understand scraps (H)of ancient Chinese texts. It can even do part-of-speech analysis and retrieve specific
information, such as names, events, and places from a text. With this LLM,ancient Chinese texts can be accessed
by more Chinese people, including students.Through Xunzi's retrieval function, users can get more specific
cultural information based on courtesy names."The model can help us mine for more information hidden in our
cultural legacy and find unnoticed models and connections,"said Wang.
But Wang and his team don't simply focus on target users in China. They are aiming at the rest of the world
as well. They have shared the LLM on GitHub and other websites, allowing users to download and use it for free.
"Our team is committed to the philosophy of making our data and model globally accessible. We hope this will
encourage more people to appreciate traditional Chinese culture,"Wang explained.
32.Why was the large language model named Xunzi?
A.Because the research team leader's name is Xunzi
B.Because Xunzi was a leading publisher of ancient texts.
C.Because the model can understand ancient Chinese texts perfectly.
D
A.To make money by selling the model.
B.To dominate the market for language models.
C.To get traditional Chinese culture more accessible to mo

Dear Alex,
It’s great to hear about the "Chinese Digital Culture Week"!
Best wishes,
Li Hua

(95words)
