After I discovered Diet Coke in 1982, I drank at least three 12-ounce cans nearly every day for the next four decades. I was the person who avoided certain airlines because they only served Pepsi. At various times I tried to stop, but I could never prevent myself from drinking it for longer than a week.
This year, something happened that changed everything. I had been feeling pain in the left side of my stomach for months, but doctors were unable to figure out the problem. At the same time, I began noticing that my beloved drink left an awful aftertaste I had never noticed before. In late June, after opening up my second can of the day, pains shot across my stomach, and that was my last soda. Just like that, I was done, after 39 years. Why did it take so long? Was I truly psychologically dependent, or was it simply a bad habit?
The American Psychiatric Association doesn’t specifically list Diet Coke addiction. However, research indicates its addictive potential. Ashley Gearhardt at the University of Michigan points to the two “culprits” that can be found in Diet Coke: aspartame (阿斯巴甜) and caffeine. Aspartame, 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, and caffeine work together to keep us desiring more.
As of now, I’m on Day 41 of being Diet Coke-free. The initial days were extremely difficult due to caffeine withdrawal, but I’m committed to maintaining this new lifestyle. My stomach hurts less, and my sweet tooth is not as persistent. I am quite pleased with myself for having altered a lifelong habit. If can do this, I can do anything, even if it takes 40 years.
4. What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 1?
A. Diet Coke was an inseparable part of his life.
B. He tried various ways to stop drinking Diet Coke.
C. Diet Coke was less popular before he discovered it.
D. He preferred to take flights which didn’t offer Pepsi.
5. What made the author decide to change?
A. The doctor’s advice. B. Pain and bad taste.
C. Persistent headaches. D. Research on Diet Coke.
6. What can replace the underlined word “culprits” in paragraph 3?
A. criminals B. advocators C. defenders D. sponsors
7. How does the author feel about giving up Diet Coke?
A. Accomplished. B. Disappointed. C. Enthusiastic. D. Hesitant.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. A

At the same time, I began noticing that my beloved drink left an awful aftertaste I had never noticed before. In late June, after opening up my second can of the day, pains shot across my stomach, and that was my last soda.(几个月来,我一直感到左胃疼痛,但医生无法找出问题所在。
根据第三段“Ashley Gearhardt at the University of Michigan points to the two “culprits” that can be found in Diet Coke: aspartame (阿斯巴甜) and caffeine. Aspartame, 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, and caffeine work together to keep us desiring more.(密歇根大学的阿什利·吉尔哈特指出,健怡可乐中有两个“culprits”:阿斯巴甜和咖啡因。比普通糖甜200倍的阿斯巴甜和咖啡因共同作用,让我们渴望更多)”可知,阿斯巴甜和咖啡因让人们对健怡可乐欲罢不能,结合前文提到健怡可乐有成瘾潜力,“culprits”应是导致不良后果的事物,与“criminals(造成破坏或不良影响的事物)”意思相符。故选A。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I am quite pleased with myself for having altered a lifelong habit. If can do this, I can do anything, even if it takes 40 years.(我很高兴自己改变了一个终生的习惯。如果我能做到这一点,我可以做任何事情,即使需要40年的时间)”可知,作者为自己改变了长期的习惯而感到高兴和自豪,有成就感。故选A。

A company called Colossal Biosciences has created thick-haired mice that they are calling “Colossal Woolly Mice”. These mice are a step toward the company’s goal of creating the extinct woolly mammoth (猛犸象).
Colossal focuses on replacing extinct animals that went extinct long ago. Its main project is to recreate woolly mammoths. These mammoths, which looked like hairy elephants, died out about 4,000 years ago after the last ice age.
Colossal isn’t trying to bring woolly mammoths back to life. Instead, it wants to change Asian elephant DNA to create an animal similar to a woolly mammoth. The company believes this could help regain balance to the Arctic environment. Some scientists question this.
Actually, working with Asian elephants would be very difficult. They are endangered and take 22 months to have a baby. So, Colossal focuses on mice instead. Mice are more manageable, cost-effective, simpler to handle, and have a quicker reproductive cycle.
For the experiment, researchers looked at how woolly mammoths stayed warm, focusing on their long, thick hair. They compared mammoth DNA to elephant DNA. Using CRISPR (a gene-editing technology), they edited mouse DNA to change not just one gene, but as many as seven genes at one time. This made the experiment special.
The results were striking. Lead scientist Beth Shapiro said, “We ended up with adorable (可爱的) mice that have longer, woolly, golden coats.” This is good news for Colossal. Since they plan to use elephant DNA to create something like a mammoth, they will need to edit many genes— perhaps as many as 85. The company is pleased that it has been able to target these genes for hair so accurately.
Many experts are impressed with Colossal’s ability to edit many genes at once. But not everyone thinks the woolly mice are a big deal. Some people question the company’s plans to bring back extinct animals. They say it might be better to help animals that are currently endangered. However, Colossal believes its work could be of assistance in many situations, including protecting endangered animals.
8. What is the main goal of Colossal Biosciences?
A. To create a new kind of mouse called “Colossal Woolly Mice”.
B. To change the DNA of Asian elephant.
C. To restore extinct animals like woolly mammoth.
D. To clone woolly mammoths for scientific research.
9. Why did Colossal choose mice for their experiments?
A. They are not in danger of extinction.
B They are cheaper and reproduce faster.
C. Their genes are much simpler to target.
D. They have a relatively longer lifespan.
10. What does Colossal Biosciences think of its work?
A. Fruitless. B. Beneficial. C. Impressive. D. Efficient.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Conservation vs De-extinction: A Modern Dilemma.
B. Mice with Golden Coats: A Breakthrough in mammoth recreation.
C. Reviving the Past: Colossal Biosciences and the Woolly mammoth Project.
D. The Future of Genetic Research: Advancements in CRISPR Technology.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. C

D
The cry of the fishing cat sounds like that of a duck, and the rest of this mid-sized animal also seems well-suited to a fishing life. Unlike other cats, the fishing cat is not afraid of water. It likes to swim in water. The cat’s narrow head makes it suitable for underwater life. And its ears can move downwards while in water, which helps prevent the water from entering its ears. Besides, its thick coat prevents water from reaching its skin, keeping it warm in cold water.
“Fishing cats are wetland experts,” says wildlife biologist Tiasa Adhya. Her research shows how the shy animal fishes. In deep water, the cat waits patiently on the banks for hours, very much like a normal cat catching a goldfish, before jumping into the water for the kill. In the shallows, though, the cat forces fish to leave their hiding places by moving wildly with heavy steps, like a kid playing in rainwater on the road.
But the world has lost almost 90 percent of its wetlands since the 1700s. Nowadays, things like intensive aquaculture (密集水产养殖) and pollution destroy the living places of freshwater fish, which makes fishing cats stand against farmers. The hungry cats start to attack farmed fish, even chickens and goats, and to reduce their losses, farmers set up traps and use harmful medicine to catch the cats. Once found along river systems from Pakistan to Vietnam, the cats have been almost out of sight.
Now, scientists are testing new approaches, including the planting of a kind of special rice, to deal with this. With its good quality, its sale could help farmers make more money, making intensive aquaculture less attractive. Growing on nutrients (滋养物) washed in by rainwater rather than on human-made nutrients, the rice also creates living places for fishing cats and other animals. The idea is that in places where there is plenty to feed cats and fishermen, killings are unnecessary. “Nobody takes a loss,” Adhya explains, “when somebody takes a fish.”
12. What enables the fishing cat to be expert at fishing?
A. Its loud cry. B. Its light weight.
C. Its sharp eyesight. D. Its physical appearance.
13. What does paragraph 2 center on?
A. How fishing cats search for wetlands. B. Why fishing cats prefer to stay still.
C. Fishing cats’ methods of catching fish. D. The differences between fishing cats and other cats.
14. What’s the obvious result of the reduced wetlands?
A. Fishing cats are in danger of dying out. B. Fishing cats catch more freshwater fish.
C. The price of farmed fish keeps going up. D. Farmers stop raising fish in wetlands.
15. What do scientists expect to achieve with the special rice?
A. To save more wetlands for tourism. B. To reduce farming costs for farmers.
C. To help fishing cats keep a balanced diet. D. To benefit both fishing cats and humans.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. D

【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“With its good quality, its sale could help farmers make more money, making intensive aquaculture less attractive. Growing on nutrients (滋养物) washed in by rainwater rather than on human-made nutrients, the rice also creates living places for fishing cats and other animals. The idea is that in places where there is plenty to feed cats and fishermen, killings are unnecessary.(由于其优良的品质,这种水稻的销售能够帮助农民增加收入,从而降低对密集型水产养殖的依赖。这种水稻依靠雨水带来的营养物质生长,而非依赖人工施加的营养物质,因此它也为鱼猫和其他动物提供了栖息地。其理念在于,在那些有充足食物供猫和渔民食用的地方,捕杀行为就没有必要了)”可知,科学家们期望通过这种特殊水稻既造福渔猫,也造福人类。故选D。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school. On turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle with (管闲事) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together and I don't want them to worry about us.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down on Henry and didn't want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behaviour, because he knew that they misunderstood him. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home together with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him.
Paragraph 1:
It seemed as if Robert would be dying.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Thus, Robert's life was saved.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
Paragraph 1:
It seemed as if Robert would be dying. Obviously, he was in a critical situation and at a loss what to do next. Just at that moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry raced to the riverside, took off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He swam to Robert as fast as possible. Fortunately, he reached Robert just when he was about to sink. With great effort and much danger to himself, he managed to bring Robert to the shore.
Paragraph 2:
Thus, Robert's life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed of having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They apologized sincerely to Henry for their rude behaviour and asked for forgiveness. Henry did forgive them. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was — never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

D. Hesitant.
C
