An ambulance was called and rushed the baby to nearby hospital. About 20 percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third degree. The doctors could tell immediately that Ammie’s best chance of survival was specialized burns unit some miles away at Glasgow Royal hospital. There , using tissue taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, surgeons performed complex skin grafts(植皮手术)to close her wounds and control her injuries , an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent(经历)12 more operations to repair her body. When she started school at the age of 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street , the class and the school,” she recalls, “Some children refused to become friends with me because of that.” Today, age 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her life, she is still awaiting two further operations. C Nightmares cause a lot of suffering or trouble to the sleepy, but scientists think that they’re just a natural part of healthy rest. They aren’t sure exactly why we have them, but it might have something to do with developing connections inside our brains. Dreams and nightmares may help with memory storage, emotional processing or training for real-life fight or flight situations. All three can be stressful, so it’s no wonder that dreams sometimes turn into nightmares. For some, foods that change body temperature or brain chemistry, such as sugar and alcohol, can contribute to bad dreams. For others, it can be something as simple as sleeping in an uncomfortable position. Physical health problems, such as a fever, can also cause nightmares, as can certain medications. Many people also find that their mental health affects their dreams. This is most pronounced in post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD), where the brain reruns past events during the night, but everyday stresses can also flow into our sleep. Keeping a regular bedtime and taking the time to wind down before bed can really help to get you into the right mindset for restful sleep. You can reduce stress and anxiety by exercising during the day and avoiding stimulants such as caffeine in the run-up to bedtime, but one of the best things you can do to manage nightmares is to record and analyse them. If your mind is trying to work through memories, emotions and stressful situations in your dreams, it’s possible that there’s something to learn from them. You could look up a dream meaning online, but your own interpretation is likely to be more valuable. Use a weekly tracker to record your sleep, including any bad dreams you have because recording your nightmares could help you to manage them more effectively. One technique used in the treatment of nightmares associated with PTSD is image rehearsal. The idea is to practise visualising different endings to your nightmares during the day. This gives your brain a bank of new ideas to call on when you experience the nightmare for real. It works best for reoccurring nightmares, because they often end in the same way. Many people are able to work through their nightmares on their own, and some even learn to enjoy them, but if you’re struggling, it’s important to reach out for help. 46. From the first paragraph, it can be concluded that nightmares _______. A. are not a subject of science B. are not related to health C. damage one’s memory D. come from pressure 47. Which of the following activities most likely contributes to a nightmare according to the passage? A. Cooking a meal. B. Taking a drug. C. Going to bed late. D. Celebrating birthday. 48. The word “pronounced” in paragraph 2 has the closest meaning to ______. A. minimal B. sensational C. noticeable D. distant 49. It is suggested in the passage that a person should manage nightmares by ________. A. exercising before sleep B. searching online for treatment C. recording and sharing them D. imagining various conclusions 50. What is the passage mainly about? A. A search for clues to nightmares. B. A deep understanding of nightmares. C. Effective solutions to nightmares. D. Detailed comparisons of nightmares. D Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, "In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence". Given that this is the case, why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit? First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict. Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fir On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution; listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need f. consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid off As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country. 51. This article is mainly about _______. A. the lives of school children B. the cause of arguments in schools C. how to analyze youth violence D. how to deal with school conflicts 52. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________. A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime B. a small conflict can lead to violence C. students tend to lose their temper easily D. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight 53. Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5? A. To find out who to blame. B. To get ready to buy new things. C. To make clear what the real issue is. D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match. 54. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ______. A. there was a decrease in classroom violence B. there was less student cooperation in the classroom C. more teachers fell better about themselves in schools D. the teacher-student relationship greatly improved 55. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to _______. A. complain about problems in school education B. teach students different strategies for school life C. advocate teaching conflict management in schools D. inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence 第Ⅱ卷(非选择题共35分) 注意事项: 1.用黑色钢笔或签字笔直接答在答题卡上,答在本试卷上的无效。 2.本卷共2题,共35分。 第三部分:写作(共两节,满分35分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) It is said that a person's high school years are some of the most important they will experience, and are often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. I couldn't agree more. My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents. Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities(能力) as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it—I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast. Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school. Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger. 56. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 2? (no more than 5 words) 57. How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year? (no more than 5words) 58. Why were the writer s grades rapidly declining? (no more than 10 words) 59. What important lesson has the writer learned at Southside High School?(no more than 10 words) 60. Among the three columns “Career Planning”, “Our Students” and “Campus Culture”, I would like to choose “Career Planning” to be the one to be added, based on the original two columns “School Profile” and “Study Life”. I know that right now a large number of students still have absolutely no idea about what they truly want to become in the future, so it’s quite urgent and necessary to give students basic understanding of what different kinds of jobs are like and what kinds of qualities are required for different jobs. This may help us gain a better understanding of our strengths and weakness so that we can figure out our goals. To me, it’s much more meaningful than “Our Students” or “Campus Culture”. Dear classmates, what’s your recommendations? Would you like to share among us? 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
