When I arrived at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at my hesitant posture and held up some fingers. One? Two? I put up one finger, and he directed me to the Level 1 class. It was disorienting: Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.
Learning ASL in the early weeks was a culture shock and a bruise to my ego. As a writer, I pride myself on a certain facility with language. I was taught that there’s a perfect combination of words that can most precisely communicate any thought. With ASL, I expected to feel similarly, and thought fluency would come once I collected a critical mass of signs. The first thing you learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I asked and answered questions using words we didn’t have the signs for, those early weeks were filled with laborious spelling. It was embarrassing: Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words— often multiple times— was its own kind of torture.
Over time, I picked up on new conventions, like waving a hand or stomping on the ground to get someone’s attention. My fingers stalled as they reached for new shapes, and I struggled to differentiate very similar looking signs. Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措词) is not as important as the way you embody what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word “desperate”. “ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,” he told me. “If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the appropriate facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look at all frustrated,” he added — it’s like speaking in a deadpan monotone while claiming you’re angry.
I’ve been attending ASL classes for almost two years. Initially, my reason was trivial: a childhood fascination with “secret languages”. While ASL may not wholly share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision. Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.
24. How did the author feel in the first ASL class?
A. Frustrated. B. Confused. C. Anxious. D. Hesitant.
25. What made the author embarrassed when learning the alphabet?
A. Putting on smiling facial expressions. B. Being made fun of in front of the class.
C. Waving a hand to get someone’s attention. D. Misspelling and respelling words repeatedly.
26. According to the passage, what can we learn about ASL?
A. It’s a universal language system across cultures. B. It conveys more emotions than verbal language.
C. It requires a combination of signs and emotions. D. It has a direct translation of signs for every word.
27. What has the author learned from her learning experience?
A. The body is what gives language life. B. Diction is what gives language flavour.
C. Fluency comes from the mastery of signs. D. ASL prioritizes precision over communication.
C
A Fluent Advantage
When schools go through budget cuts foreign language classes are often placed on the cutting block. School administrators often do not understand how important foreign language study is for their students’ success in the real world. Far from cutting language classes, schools should be demanding them for all students. Studying a foreign language should be required in middle schools.
Language study strengthens students’ minds. Many studies have indicated that multilingual people — people who speak more than one language — are better at certain tasks. Specifically, multilingual people have better executive function than people who speak only one language. Executive function is the way the brain manages all the information it’s given, such as performing different tasks and deciding what to focus on. In brain scans, multilingual people show increased activity in the areas of the brain that control executive function. Researchers have guessed that this advantage exists because multilingual people must constantly decide which words from which language to use. As a result, multilingual people get lots of practice with executive function. Their brains can then apply those skills to other tasks, like paying attention or multitasking. This effect is especially strong for people who grow up speaking more than one language. The earlier students start language classes, the more benefits they may get from language study.
Moreover, language study helps prepare students for their future careers. Today, language skills are in high demand on the job market and more and more businesses work in many countries across the world. As businesses become global, they need people who can communicate easily across national borders. To prepare for their careers, more students should be learning foreign languages. From 2010 to 2015, the demand in the United States for workers who speak a second language doubled. This trend included workers of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Of course, in order to make better use of the advantages of foreign language study, middle school foreign language classes should not just make students memorize new words and sounds.
They must also teach students about new cultures. Foreign language classes should be required to include lessons about history, literature, customs, and government along with the languages themselves. These subjects will help students become better global citizens and support their studies in other subjects.
Requiring middle schoolers to study a foreign language offers them opportunities to sharpen their brains. It also gives them tools that will help them become productive members of today’s global society.
28. How does the author feel about foreign language study in middle schools?
A. More foreign language classes should be offered in middle schools.
B. Taking a foreign language class in middle schools should be a choice.
C. Foreign language classes should be cut because of the limited funds.
D. Studying a foreign language should be a middle school requirement.
29. The author believes ________.
A. people who speak more than one language have better executive function
B. being able to work in another country doubles people’s job opportunities
C. people learn languages better as young people than when they are older
D. people’s executive function improves after foreign language classes
30. What’s the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 4?
A. To sum up his argument. B. To put forward a solution.
C. To emphasize his point of view. D. To introduce an additional suggestion.
D
For several decades, there has been an extensive and organized campaign intended to generate distrust in science, funded by those whose interests and ideologies are threatened by the findings of modern science. In response, scientists have tended to stress the success of science. After all, scientists have been right about most things.
Stressing successes isn’t wrong, but for many people it’s not persuasive. An alternative answer to the question “Why trust science?” is that scientists use the so-called scientific method. If you’ve got a high school science textbook lying around, you’ll probably find that answer in it. But what is typically thought to be the scientific method — develop a hypothesis (假设), then design an experiment to test it — isn’t what scientists actually do. Science is dynamic: new methods get invented; old ones get abandoned; and sometimes, scientists can be found doing many different things.
If there is no identifiable scientific method, then what is the reason for trust in science? The answer is how those claims are evaluated. The common element in modern science, regardless of the specific field or the particular methods being used, is the strict scrutiny (审查) of claims. It’s this tough, sustained process that works to make sure faulty claims are rejected. A scientific claim is never accepted as true until it has gone through a lengthy “peer review” because the reviewers are experts in the same field who have both the right and the obligation to find faults.
A key aspect of scientific judgment is that it is done collectively. No claim gets accepted until it has been vetted by dozens, if not hundreds, of heads. In areas that have been contested, like climate science and vaccine safety, it’s thousands. This is why we are generally justified in not worrying too much if a single scientist, even a very famous one, disagrees with the claim. And this is why diversity in science — the more people looking at a claim from different angles — is important.
Does this process ever go wrong? Of course. Scientists are humans. There is always the possibility of revising a claim on the basis of new evidence. Some people argue that we should not trust science because scientists are “always changing their minds.” While examples of truly settled science being overturned are far fewer than is sometimes claimed, they do exist. But the beauty of this scientific process is that it explains what might otherwise appear paradoxical (矛盾的): that science produces both novelty and stability. Scientists do change their minds in the face of new evidence, but this is a strength of science, not a weakness.
31. What can we learn about the so-called scientific method?
A. It’s an easy job to prove its existence.
B. It usually agrees with scientists’ ideas.
C. It hardly gets mixed with false theories.
D. It constantly changes and progresses.
32. What does the underlined word “vetted” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Examined B. Explained. C. Repeated. D. Released.
33. According to the passage, the author may agree that________.
A. it is not persuasive to reject those faulty claims
B. a leading expert cannot play a decisive role in a scrutiny
C. diversity in knowledge is the common element in science
D. settled science tends to be collectively overturned
34. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Apply Your Mind to Science B. Explore A Dynamic Way to Science
C. Defend the Truth in Science D. Put Your Faith in Science

Being a sports fan can be a rollercoaster ride. Incredible highs if you win, depressing lows if you don’t, and lots of stressful feelings in between. Thankfully, the overall impact should be a positive one because research has shown that people who watch sports experience greater wellbeing than those who don’t. ___35___
Research carried out by Anglia Ruskin University has found that people who attended a live sporting event in the last year are more satisfied with their lives and are less lonely than people who have not. ___36___ Research has shown that people who watch sports on TV or on the internet are also less depressed than those who don’t.
___37___ We seek connection through the formation of in-groups: communities of people with whom we share something in common. These communities form part of our identities, and through them we find social and emotional support. An example of in-group formation is the community we share with people who support the same sports teams as us. Through our shared social identity, we also share the social and emotional benefits of successes among our group. ___38___ However, when our team loses, we are more likely to distance ourselves from our team to protect ourselves from negative social and psychological consequences: “cutting off reflected failure”.
The role of social processes linking sports spectatorship and wellbeing is demonstrated by researchers. They found that areas of the brain associated with psychological rewards were more active when participants watched sports where fans bond through shared experiences like cheering for the team. ___39___
Whether you support your team at the game or from home, you can enjoy the highs and lows of being a sports fan. As long as you’re sharing that experience with others, it’s good for you.
A. People are more active when watching baseball or football.
B. This is probably linked to the social aspects of watching sports.
C. The positive effect of watching sports is likely about social identity.
D. Watching sports on TV or online can also be good for one’s wellbeing.
E. People with higher wellbeing have better physical health and live longer.
F That’s why people gain greater mental benefits when watching football than golf.
G. Researchers at KU Leuven have comically named this “bathing in reflected glory”.

For nearly five decades, a comedy sci-fi novel has made readers wish they had a fish in their ear. In Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, characters could understand any language thanks to the little Babel fish. Now that dream is edging closer to reality with a new type of blue-tooth earphones, which promises live translation. According to the company, users can listen to conversations in a variety of foreign languages and hear translated words in their ears, while transcripts appear on their phone screen.
Although it is in its early stage, live translation in the pocket could help individuals by immersing them in new cultures and kick starting conversations. More than that, it could rewire whole sectors of economies by pushing people beyond familiar chains and tourist traps, directing income to small local vendors whose English is imperfect.
In the air, the stakes rise even higher. Several fatal crashes have been linked to misunderstandings between air traffic control and pilots. The misunderstandings caused by a heavy accent or strange slang become deadly when you’re talking about the correct runway. Having AI-assisted translations could be of great help in these scenarios.
Just as calculators reshaped our approach to math, AI translation could reduce our motivation to speak other tongues. As such, challenging times may lie ahead for companies who offer language courses.
A manager of an agency, which arranges Mandarin-language home-stays in China and Singapore, says that AI tutors are already popular among her customers. But she sees this as a positive trend that could actually boost demand: “There’s a significant difference between what AI can offer and the immersive, real-world experience of a home-stay abroad.”
After all, apps can’t yet decode non-verbal cues. Your average Italian can communicate a lot with a careless chin tap (meaning “I don’t care”) or a quick eyelid pull (it stands for “be careful”). Brits and Australians, meanwhile, often use their strongest insults as a kind of “social glue” to bond with close friends. All this, you need on-the-ground experience to appreciate. “That kind of learning goes beyond screens,” she says. “Language is ultimately about connection, about understanding people, culture and emotions.”
55. What can a Babel fish do in the novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

56. What impact can live translation have on economies, even though it is still in its early stage?

【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m writing on behalf of the basketball team of Hongxing High School to invite your team to a friendly inter-school basketball match.
The match will be held in our school gymnasium on Sunday, November 24th, at 2:00 p.m. We plan to have a 40-minute match divided into four quarters. After the game, we will host a simple reception in the school cafeteria, where players from both teams can communicate and share their experience in playing basketball.
We specially invite your team for two main reasons. First, your team has an excellent reputation in the basketball circle of Beijing’s international schools. Playing against you will be a great opportunity for our team to improve our skills and tactical awareness. Second, this friendly match can strengthen the friendship between our two schools.
We sincerely hope you can accept our invitation.
Yours,
