B When snow fell over Longnan, a county in Jiangxi Province, in January 2024, Zhong Yanpeng’s phone buzzed with worry. He was in neighboring Guangdong, yet his mind was back home — on the 350-year-old Hakka round house he had tended for over 50 years. “Rain and snow are the worst enemies of these old walls,” he told his team, and packed his tools quickly. He drove through the storm across the provincial border to Yangcun Village. The four-story building stood silent beneath the grey sky, its rammed-earth (夯土) walls damp-darkened. Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief. To most visitors, these round houses are mere curiosities. For Zhong, they represent memory, duty, and identity. Raised in one, he took up carpentry at 16 and stuck to the craft. Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. “Ancient wisdom,” he said with a smile. Yet such wisdom is fragile. Skilled craftsmen were scarce in the 1980s, and the shortage persists today. His nephew Li Minghua, also a master, sighs about youth: “They favor city apartments. My team’s youngest member is over 40.” Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says. By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. “My biggest concern is skill inheritance. As the senior craftsman, I must set an example.” His team now totals more than 50 members. Still, the real question lingers: will young people choose working with traditional rammed-earth construction over urban comfort? The answer remains uncertain. 4. Why does Zhong tap the old wall with his hammer? A. To record building data. B. To repair broken walls. C. To take measurements. D. To check its condition. 5. What makes Hakka round house walls tough? A. Local modern building clay. B. Specially mixed and aged materials. C. Common kitchen ingredients. D. Modern protective chemicals. 6. What is Zhong’s attitude toward restoration work? A. Casual and careless. B. Proud and worried. C. Cautious and faithful. D. Doubtful and negative. 7. What is victory in Zhong’s eyes? A. Building a larger team. B. Passing down the skills. C. Restoring more round houses. D. Attracting young tourists. C Flavor isn’t just on your tongue — it’s also in your brain. New brain scans have identified a specific region that combines taste and smell into the unified experience we call flavor. Smell and taste are closely connected, says Putu Agus Khorisantono, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. When we eat, food chemicals bind to taste sensors on the tongue, while food smells travel through the mouth and stick to smell sensors in the nose. These two signals combine in the brain to create our sense of flavor. For instance, mangoes and peaches both taste mostly sour, but their different aromas allow us to tell them apart easily. To find exactly where this combination happens in the brain, Khorisantono’s team first trained 25 people to connect specific smell-taste mixtures with particular flavors. Then they gave the participants tiny drinks designed to activate either taste sensors or smell sensors, while scanning their brain activity throughout the process. Using machine learning, the team analyzed the brain scans. They labeled each scan with what the participant had sipped, then trained algorithms to predict what people had tasted based on brain images alone. The best-performing algorithm had been trained on images from a region called the insula (脑岛). Scientists once believed the insula responded only to tastes. But research with rodents in 2017 showed it could also process smells. And last year, scientists discovered that some insula cells respond to combinations of smell and taste, hinting that this region may play a role in identifying flavor. The new study confirms this: the insula is key to both smell and flavor. When participants received either a food smell or a taste, scans of the insula looked strikingly similar, suggesting it interprets smell and taste signals in much the same way. Algorithms trained on other brain regions also performed well, possibly because they receive flavor signals from the insula, Khorisantono explains. These findings offer new insight into how our brains create the rich experience of flavor from separate inputs. 8. What were the participants asked to do in the experiment? A. Taste mangoes and peaches. B. Describe the feelings brought by drinks. C. Distinguish sour foods by smell. D. Associate smell-taste mixtures with flavors. 9. Why was machine learning used in the study? A. To optimize brain scan images. B. To identify the brain region for flavor. C. To confirm what people had tasted. D. To mark brain scans with sipped drinks. 10. What did scientists once think about the insula? A. It was only responsive to tastes. B. It was only sensitive to smells. C. It could combine smell and taste. D. It played no role in identifying flavor. 11. What is the main finding of the new study? A. Flavor experience largely depends on the tongue. B. Flavor processing takes place within a single brain area. C. Flavor arises from how the brain combines smell and taste. D. Smell and taste keep separate from each other in the brain. D Animals perform tasks that their bodies are well designed for. That’s because their intelligence evolved(进化)with their physical form as they interacted with the environment. Artificial intelligence is smart as well but it doesn’t have a body. Agrim Gupta of Stanford University and his colleagues wondered: Does having bodies matter for the evolution of intelligence? To answer it, they created a virtual robot named “unimal” and studied how having virtual bodies affected the evolution of the unimals’ intelligence. Unimals are pretty simple with balls for heads and cylinders for anns and legs. The test environments came in three varieties: flat areas, areas filled with hills, steps and broken stones, and areas that had the complexities of the second sort, but with added objects that unimals need to move to a target location. At first, the unimals were in random shapes, but with identical software running them. In groups of four, Dr Gupta put them through tests of agility, stability, and ability to control objects. Then each group’s winner was allowed to give birth to a daughter with one mutation(变异), for example, an extra leg for stability. This daughter was sent to a new group to be tested. The process repeated and the test ended after ten generations of evolution. The diversity of the unimals’ shapes that evolved surprised the team. Some had arms as well as legs while others had only legs. Crucially, though, the researchers found the most successful unimals, which evolved in the toughest environment, learned tasks faster and better than their ancestors. This consists with the Baldwin effect, which suggests that minds evolve to make best use of the morphologies(形态)of the bodies they find themselves in. It’s believed that the result will provide insights for developing robots that can learn to perform multiple tasks in the real world. 12. What did Agrim Gupta’s team study? A. How animals perform tasks. B. How unimals are created randomly. C. How animals interact with the environment. D. How having virtual bodies influences AI evolution. 13. What makes the third test environment the toughest? A. Stones to be picked. B. More steps to be counted. C. Objects to be moved. D. Higher hills to be climbed. 14. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The test procedure. B. The running software. C. The unimals’ varieties. D. The winners’ mutations. 15. Why is the Baldwin effect mentioned in Paragraph 5? A. To compare different discoveries. B. To explain the concept of morphology. C. To support the result of Gupta’s study. D. To introduce a new way to develop robots. Science is a mental toolbox for solving problems. ____16____. And they are powerful and useful in everyday life. Today, we open the toolbox: how scientists think, and how you can borrow their tricks. •Start with an open mind. Being open-minded means that when we are asked a question, scientific thinking requires us to admit that we often simply don’t know the answer.____17____. If the evidence changes and you don’t change your mind, that’s not a good spot to be in. •Accept uncertainty. Scientists always accept that there are things they don’t know, and things they simply cannot know for sure.____18____. It allows you to make better decisions because you’re taking the uncertainty into account. Science says it’s OK to wait for evidence before coming to a conclusion. •____19____. Go and do your research. Pull together all the data—stuff that agrees with your argument and stuff that refutes(驳斥)it. Consider everything, rather than focusing on a single point. Then, for each piece of data, consider the quality of the evidence. • Develop a hypothesis(假设). A hypothesis is a theory about the world—a guess. Ask yourself: Which of my theories best explains the data I have gathered? Start with the most likely explanation and test it.____20____. A. Collect your data B. Focus on your argument C. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第三段“Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief. (钟走近,用小锤子轻轻敲击,并倾听。“依然坚固。”他如释重负地点点头。)”可知,钟彦鹏敲击墙壁是为了通过声音判断墙体结构是否依然坚固,目的是检查墙体的健康状况。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. (它们的强度不仅来自黏土和石灰,还来自红糖、蛋清和糯米——这些成分经过数月的陈化,用于防御墙。)”可知,客家围屋的墙壁使用了多种原料混合、并且经过数月陈化处理的特殊材料,这是墙壁坚固耐用的核心原因。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says. (钟走遍全国向各位匠人学习,咨询历史学家和原住居民,并且记录每一处细节。“每一座围屋都承载着独特的故事,修复必须忠实于原始材料、尺寸和工艺方法。”他说。)”可知,钟彦鹏在修复工作中不放过任何细节,严格恪守“忠于原貌”的修复原则,体现出他对修复工作谨慎小心、忠于传统的态度。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. (到2023年,龙南已经修复了近100座围屋,但钟并不认为这是胜利。)”和“My biggest concern is skill inheritance. (我最大的担忧是技艺的传承。)”可知,在钟彦鹏看来,修复一百座围屋也算不上真正的成功,只有解决他最大的担忧,实现传统夯土建造技艺的传承,才是真正的胜利。 C Flavor isn’t just on your tongue — it’s also in your brain. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第三段中的“To find exactly where this combination happens in the brain, Khorisantono’s team first trained 25 people to connect specific smell‑taste mixtures with particular flavors.(为了精准找到大脑中信号整合发生的位置,Khorisantono的研究团队首先对25名受试者进行训练,让他们将特定的嗅觉—味觉混合物与特定风味建立联系。)” 根据第四段中的“Using machine learning, the team analyzed the brain scans. 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15.
