The idea of helping others stayed with me all week. When Saturday came, I
gathered my courage and explained it all to Mr. Turner, who runs a bakery (面包店): my family's past situation, the food bank, and my hope to help more people.
“Sounds like a wonderful idea, Meghan,” Mr. Turner said, his face breaking into a smile.“And you know I can't stand food waste.”
I couldn't wait to tell Kyla, my best friend. After I explained everything, her eyes lighted.“That's great, Meghan!” she exclaimed. Then she added in a conspiratorial
whisper,“But maybe we can do even more?”
More? That sounded unbelievable exciting!“Tell me,”I urged,“what's your idea?”
“I want to use social media for something positive,” she explained, her voice full of joy.“I' ll write a
post online about the food bank and ask for donations.”
Pure genius! The plan worked perfectly. With Kyla's many followers, hundreds saw her post.Over the following weeks, the food bank received a steady stream of donations from local businesses and residents. Mauren, the kind lady who ran it, was always so grateful. She once told us with tears in her eyes,“▲ ”
About a month later, another piece of good news arrived.“I' ve got a job, Meghan!” Dad shouted one evening. Our family's situation was finally improving.
Even though we were in a better place financially, I kept my job at the bakery—I loved it too much— and I still went to the food bank every Saturday with Kyla to help Mauren. It wasn't about life necessity any more; it was about community.
Kyla and I always went to the supermarket, but never before 6:00 p.m.!We loved searching the shelves for yellow-sticker items and sometimes found something
cheaper.
“What's kale?”I asked, holding up a bunch of leafy greens.
“Looks like a kind of cabbage,” Kyla replied.
“Okay, it's only 45 cents (美分). Maybe I can cook it with these mushrooms and this beef,”I mused.
As usual, Kyla slept over at my house that Saturday. We crowded into the kitchen, experimenting with the beef, mushrooms, and the kale. The wonderful smell filled the kitchen, mirroring the warmth we felt. It was a simple meal, but it represented something bigger—a small kindness that had started as a simple idea
and grown into a light that brightened our whole community.
What can we infer from Mr. Turner's words“And you know I can't stand food waste”?
A. He supports Meghan.
B. He disagree s with Meghan.
C. He plans to give Meghan the unsold food.
D. He plans to sell the food at a lower price.
Which sentence is most suitable for ▲ ?
A. You are bringing more than just help; you are bringing jobs.
B. You are bringing more than just bread; you are bringing changes.
C. You are bringing more than just food; you are bringing hope.
D. You are bringing more than just kindness; you are bringing money.
What may be the best title of the text?

We' re used to seeing cats in people's homes. You or a friend may have one or several. They might
sleep on your bed, perch on gaze out a window, or ask you to play.
Some people believe we never truly“own” cats, saying they just live with humans for food and comfort. As the saying goes,“Adog is a man's best friend. A cat is a cat's best friend.” Yet, cat owners argue that cats are misunderstood. They can be very loving, forming a close bond, following people around, and greeting
them at the door. They show their love by purring, kneading, rubbing heads, and making eye contact. With
so many people loving cats today, how did these wild creatures become popular pets?
Cats have a long history with humans. Studies show they were first domesticated (家养的) in ancient China and Egypt. Evidence from Cyprus, where a cat was buried beside a human over9,000 years ago,
suggests a close relationship even then. Scientists believe all modern cats are descended from the African-Asian wildcat.
The domestication process possibly began when humans started farming. Cat bones found in ancient
Chinese pits show these cats ate grain that humans grew. People probably encouraged cats to stay and
control pests as a protector. In return, cats grew used to human company(陪伴).Over time, people raised the friendlier cats, which gradually led to the pets we know today.
Cats were valued as skilled hunters and were even officially employed by the U. S. PostalService in
the 19th century to control mice in post offices. By the century's end, people began keeping cats mainly for companionship. Their popularity soared, and by the 1990s, cats had become more popular than dogs as pets in the U. S. Today, it's estimated there are about 600million domestic cats worldwide.
Whether humans domesticated cats or cats chose to live with us remains a fun debate. One thing is
certain:these furry companions are here to stay. And when you see your cat watching birds from the
window, remember the wild hunter that still lives within.

Shi Yuhao:A Brave Long Jumper
Shi Yuhao is a great Chinese long jumper. His story is full of ups and downs, but he
never gave up. Over 8 years,he has grown from a nervous teen to a Bronze(铜牌)-Medal-
Winner at the World athletics Championships.
In 2017, 18-year-old Shi went to the World Championships for the first time. He got to the final but felt so nervous that he cried. Even so, he finished sixth. Before that, he was already a talent. At 17, he set
the Asian youth record of 8.30 meters in 2016. People thought he would have a bright future.
But bad luck came in 2018. At the Shanghai Diamond League on a rainy night, Shi lost his balance
upon landing and hurt his bone badly in his left foot while jumping. He couldn't compete for five years. It
was a hard time, but he worked hard to make him stronger. He even changed his takeoff foot to the right
one. His coach took him to train with Su Bingtian, a top sprinter(短跑运动员). This helped Shi a lot.
Shi's hard work paid off in 2023 at the National athletics Championships, where he jumped8.18 meters. Then in September 2025,26-year-old Shi went to the World Championships again.Unlike his first appearance in 2017, Shi was relaxed and calm— so much so that he" felt like singing" before the final. In the final, he jumped 7.84 meters on his first attempt(尝试), then improved to 8.33 meters on his second— his personal best of the season, and won a bronze medal for China and his first medal at the world championships.
Talent is good, but the spirit of never giving up helps him go further. From a crying18-year-old to a
medal-winning 26-year-old, Shi has not only rewritten his own story but also showed young people how to face difficulties in our life. He is a true hero!
1.How old was Shi Yuhao at his first World athletics Championships?
2.What happened to Shi Yuhao at the 2018 Shanghai Diamond League?
3.Who helped Shi Yuhao train for his comeback?
4.What was Shi Yuhao's best jump in the 2025 World athletics Championships final?
