When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him on the porch while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the meadow by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sun peeking through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree to rescue a kite stuck in the branches. It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. I was miles off the ground! But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.
When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear of being up so high began to lift, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying. Just soaring above the earth, sailing among the clouds.
Then I began to notice how wonderful the breeze smelled. It seemed like sunshine and wild grass and rain! I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs again and again with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.
I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again.
It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the spot that became my spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing. Some days they’d be purple and pink, some days they’d be a blazing orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.
It was on a day like that when my father’s notion (观念) moved from my head to my heart. The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined.
And I started marveling (惊奇) at how I was feeling both humble and majestic. How was that possible? How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder?
It was magic.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (量表).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Answering questions about screen time use.
B. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
C. Introducing their after-school activities.
D. Talking about their lifestyles.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
D. Anxiety has become a more serious problem among them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. High screen time is common among teenagers.
B. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
C. Earlier findings about screen time are not right.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They improve teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help teenagers become better learners.
C. They support teenagers’ social development.
D. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
D
A snail (蜗牛) may hold the key to repairing eyesight for people with some eye diseases.
Golden apple snails are freshwater snails from South America. Alice knew them as a graduate student in Italy. “You could buy them in a pet store to help clean the bottom of the fish tanks,” she recalls. The snails turn out to be among the most invasive (入侵性的) species in the world. And that got Alice thinking: why are they so adaptable (适应性强的) and able to live in new environments?
She began studying the snails’ immune systems (免疫系统) and has now found they are not the only parts of the animals able to get well again from difficult situation. These snails can totally regrow a workable eye within months after having one cut, Alice and partners reported on August 6 in Nature Communications.
Scientists have known for centuries that some snails can regrow their heads, and research has showed other animals can regenerate bodies, tails or limbs. But this finding is exciting because apple snails have camera-like eyes similar to those of humans. Understanding how the snails recreate or repair their eyes might lead to methods to treat people’s eye wound or diseases.
“Alice finished the work in just a few years, which is shorter than expected. It is an amazing achievement,” says Alvarado, a developmental biologist at the University of California. “Alice is like the person who landed on the moon,” he says. Now, “she needs to build the space station from which to start real research beyond the moon.”
12. What does Alice find about golden apple snails?
A. They are sea animals coming from South America.
B. They can be bought in a pet store as a tank cleaner.
C. They are the only animals able to regrow their bodies.
D. They can partly regrow a workable eye within months.
13. What does the underlined word “regenerate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. regrow B. harm C. clean D. cut
14. What can we infer from Alvarado’s words?
A. Alice built a spaceship.
B. Alice landed on the moon.
C. Alice spent the longest research time.
D Alice made a meaningful achievement.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Snail: The Species on the Moon
B. A Snail: A Helper to Clean the Fish Tank
C. A Snail: The Key to Renewing Human Eyesight
D. A Snail: An Animal Living in New Environments

A. Answering questions about screen time use.
B. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
C. Introducing their after-school activities.
D. Talking about their lifestyles.

A. regrow B. harm C. clean D. cut
14 What can we infer from Alvarado’s words?
A. Alice built a spaceship.
B. Alice landed on the moon.
C. Alice spent the longest research time.
D. Alice made a meaningful achievement.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Snail: The Species on the Moon
B. A Snail: A Helper to Clean the Fish Tank
C. A Snail: The Key to Renewing Human Eyesight
D. A Snail: An Animal Living in New Environments
