W: That sounds rewarding. Any plans for new themes or locations?
M: Absolutely! Next season, we’ll explore the seaside, looking for shells on the beach and learning about tides.
W: That sounds great. I can’t wait to get my son involved.

On a recent Friday night, after most of our guests had slipped on their coats, two friends stayed. The candles had burned low; the chairs had inched closer together. Someone shared a new story; someone else laughed hard, trying to collect himself in the chair, but failed. I looked around and wondered: since food wasn’t the point, what held everyone there?
I didn’t always understand why hosting mattered so much to me. I grew up as an only child. Every night our family of three sat together over the dinner, talking about our days. The table was small, but the ritual (仪式感) was large. A few times a year, our quiet kitchen expanded into something else entirely. My parents would host a dinner for about 12 in our formal dining room and the energy would shift — various voices, vivid gestures, conversations across the table. Even as a child, I felt drawn to that feeling. Interestingly, my wife, Talia, grew up in a home where hosting felt effortless. More chairs appeared when needed. Extra food somehow materialized. Old friends and new faces were welcomed without ceremony.
So, since 18 years ago, even in our tiny apartment back then, Talia and I have begun inviting people over — friends, colleagues, neighbors, sometimes people barely knowing each other. We spend days checking recipes and imagining how the dishes will fit together. All food is surely homemade. These rituals don’t need to be grand but intentional.
Hosting is often messy and even chaotic, as it is. What surprises us is how often guests will pause at the door and say, “I didn’t realize how much I needed this.” They are people with tight schedules. What they are missing weren’t activities. It was being with other people without a timetable, a screen, or a reason to leave early.
After our friends finally left that recent Friday night, the empty house still felt full. It struck me then that the dining table does more than feed people. In a world that pulls us in every direction, it has become easy to forget how much we need places — and people — that invite us to come together.
24.According to paragraph1, everyone in the house was ________.
A.Unreserved. B.Outstanding. C.Improper. D.Over-scheduled.
25.What do we know about the author’s childhood?
A.He grew up in an extended family.
B.He hated the quiet family atmosphere.
C.He often hosted dinners at home.
D.He valued their family dinner routines.
26.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The home-cooked food. B.The undistracted company.
C.The indoor gatherings. D.The formal and grand party.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.The secret of home cooking. B.The art of become a perfect host.
C.The power of the dining table. D.The challenges of hosting friends.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.B 27.C

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are indicating that accurate quake forecasting may be attainable, thereby casting doubt on the conventional wisdom that such an accomplishment is beyond our capabilities. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, created an AI model that, during a test run in China, correctly forecasted approximately 70 percent of earthquakes with a one-week warning and offered reliable assessments of their potential intensity.
The researchers attribute their technique’s effectiveness to its reliance on a straightforward machine leaning framework. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI offered predictions by detecting early indicators of quakes hidden within the planet’s low-frequency rumbles (隆隆声).
The project marks a substantial breakthrough in the exploration of AI for anticipating seismic (地震) events. According to Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior researcher heading the Texas Seismological Network, “Seismic occurrences strike without warning, often in the blink of an eye. Your readiness is all you can influence. Achieving a 70% prediction rate is a considerable achievement that could significantly restrict the impact of earthquakes, reducing both the financial burden and loss of life, and the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
Although the effectiveness of this method in different regions remains uncertain, the researchers believe that their AI model has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy when carried out in regions equipped with dependable seismic monitoring facilities. Their next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, where the University of Texas’s TexNet operates a network of 300 earthquake stations and over six years’ worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Ultimately, the authors aim to combine the system with physics-based models. This approach could be particularly valuable in areas characterized by limited or inadequate data. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
28.How does the AI predict seismic events?
A.It identifies data from the satellites.
B.It analyzes background sounds in the Earth.
C.It models data based on earthquake recordings.
D.It monitors changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
29.What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3?
A.The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B.The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C.The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D.The restrictions of AI-based methods in earthquake prediction.
30.What does the subsequent research focus on?
A.Conducting tests in different locations.
B.Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C.Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D.Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
31.Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology?
A.Stable but outdated. B.Effective but costly.
C.Potential and economical. D.Pioneering and promising.

D
Many cultures have the typical example of independent geniuses. The truth, however, is that this model is more fictional than real. There are examples of great minds who did their best work alone, but over the course of history, groundbreaking insights tend to prefer groups of people sharing, reviewing, and evaluating each other’s ideas through shared social networks.
Innovation clusters (集群) are a modern interpretation on this historic trend. These hotbeds of creative businesses produce new technologies at fantastic rates. These businesses attract money, talent, and experienced workers, and then more new industries can be attracted to the area. Why they work and how they operate can cast light on the nature of innovation and offer a blueprint for a more inventive future.
The idea that businesses tend to cluster isn’t new. However, the idea of purposefully concentrating businesses together to focus on innovation, research, and development is more recent. The results have been mixed but are absolutely breathtaking when they turn out.
The best example is California’s Silicon Valley, where thousands of high-tech companies are based. In 2018, the Brookings Institution investigated Silicon Valley. It reported the density (密度) of firms within a given area was regarded as a crucial element, with more firms often leading to higher productivity increases for the region.
However, innovation clusters aren’t a risk-free move. There are cases of clusters that ultimately came to nothing. Malaysia’s BioValley, an attempt to create an innovation cluster, was such an example. While the Malaysian government made a large amount of funding available for this project, the businesses could not take advantage of it. BioValley lacked enough skilled workers for the proposed companies, and it had difficulties convincing qualified workers from elsewhere to come to Malaysia. Besides, it lacked local demand for biotechnology to keep new businesses running once started. Just because an area would like to be the site of a new innovation cluster doesn’t mean it can be.
32.What is a common misunderstanding of innovation?
A.It is driven by individual wisdom.
B.It is based on the fictional models.
C.It can be fueled by social networking.
D.It arises from competition among geniuses.
33.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The significance of innovation clusters.
B.The rise of high-tech companies.
C.The strategies for promoting innovation.
D.The pattern of business operation.
34.What does the example of Silicon Valley imply about business clustering?
A.It guarantees economic stability.
B.It produces remarkable outcomes.
C.It weakens competitive pressure.
D.It rarely applies to high-tech fields.
35.Which of the following measures can help solve BioValley’s problems?
① Import more advanced equipment
② Establish more training programs
③ Secure the supply of qualified workers
④ Increase investment in the biotechnology project
⑤ Stimulate a market for biotechnological products
A.①②⑤ B.①③④ C.②③⑤ D.③④⑤
【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.C
根据第一段中的“Many cultures have the typical example of independent geniuses. The truth, however, is that this model is more fictional than real.(许多文化都有独立天才的典型例子。然而事实是,这种模式虚构多于现实)”可知,人们普遍误解创新是由个人智慧推动的。
33.主旨大意题。根据第二段“Innovation clusters (集群) are a modern interpretation on this historic trend. These hotbeds of creative businesses produce new technologies at fantastic rates. These businesses attract money, talent, and experienced workers, and then more new industries can be attracted to the area. Why they work and how they operate can cast light on the nature of innovation and offer a blueprint for a more inventive future.(创新集群是这一历史趋势的现代解读。这些创意企业的温床以极快的速度产出新技术。这些企业吸引资金、人才和熟练工人,随后更多新产业会被吸引到该地区。它们的运作原理有助于揭示创新的本质,为更具创造力的未来提供蓝图)”可知,第二段主要讲创新集群的重要意义。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“It reported the density (密度) of firms within a given area was regarded as a crucial element, with more firms often leading to higher productivity increases for the region.(报告指出,特定区域内的企业密度被视为关键因素,更多企业往往会带来该地区生产力的大幅提升)”可知,硅谷案例表明企业集群能带来显著成效。
根据最后一段“BioValley lacked enough skilled workers for the proposed companies, and it had difficulties convincing qualified workers from elsewhere to come to Malaysia. Besides, it lacked local demand for biotechnology to keep new businesses running once started.(生物谷缺少入驻企业所需的熟练工人,也难以吸引外地合格工人前来。此外,当地缺少生物技术本土需求,无法维持新企业运营)”可知,解决办法是培养人才、保障合格工人供给、刺激生物产品市场,对应②③⑤。
第二节(共5小题, 每小题2. 5分, 共12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever walked past an empty lot (空地) and wondered, “What if this space grew with food-producing plants and flowers?” That’s how community gardening began for many neighborhoods. 36 What starts as a small group’s dream quickly grows into a neighborhood center, uniting people through a common love of nurturing (培育) life. It turns a forgotten corner into a shared treasure, where people of all ages work side by side.
Last summer, I joined my local community garden. At first, I worried I knew nothing about growing plants. 37 The garden was full of kind teachers eager to share their wisdom and patience with newcomers like me. Lopez, a retired gardener, taught me to tell the difference between weeds and young lettuce.
The garden changed how neighbors interact with each other. Every Saturday morning our community garden becomes a meeting place. Neighbors bring their home-baked bread to share. Newcomers find friends who help them feel at home. 38
Now there are over 18,000 community gardens across North America. They are key educational projects. They teach about caring for the earth and connect people with nature. 39 When a late frost damaged our tomato plants, we didn’t give up. We replanted together and learned to protect young plants, next time. It showed us how to turn challenges into chances to grow.
40 They build trust, joy, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the garden gates. Community gardening is not just about growing vegetables — it’s about growing a community. The next time you see an empty space, maybe you’ll think of the possibilities. A single seed, shared with others, can grow into something wonderful.
A.It’s a simple idea with powerful results.
B.But I soon found I didn’t need to be an expert.
C.These gardens do more than grow food, though.
D.They also teach about patience and perseverance.
E.Create a schedule for watering, weeding, and harvesting.
F.Urban designers play a crucial role in inspiring these projects.
G.Even small talks while pulling weeds can build strong bonds.
【答案】36.A 37.B 38.G 39.D 40.C

39.上文“They teach about caring for the earth and connect people with nature. (他们教导人们爱护地球,将人与自然联系起来。)”说明社区花园教导人们关爱地球,将人们与自然联系起来。下文“When a late frost damaged our tomato plants, we didn’t give up. We replanted together and learned to protect young plants, next time. It showed us how to turn challenges into chances to grow. (晚霜毁坏了我们的番茄,我们没有放弃。我们一起重新种植,并学会了下次保护幼苗。它向我们展示了如何将挑战转化为成长的机会。)”通过一个例子说明了社区花园还教会了人们面对挑战时的耐心和毅力。D项“它们还教导关于耐心和毅力的道理。”承上启下,符合语境,其中“also”表示与上文的并列关系,“patience and perseverance”与下文的例子相呼应。故选D。
40.下文“They build trust, joy, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the garden gates. Community gardening is not just about growing vegetables — it’s about growing a community. (它们还建立了信任、快乐和归属感,这种归属感远远超出了花园的大门。社区园艺不仅仅是种植蔬菜——它是在培育一个社区。)”总结了社区花园的重要意义,即建立信任、快乐和归属感,并强调社区园艺不仅仅是种植蔬菜,更是培养社区精神。C项“然而,这些花园不仅仅种植食物。”引出下文对社区花园意义的进一步阐述,符合语境,其中“do more than grow food”与下文的“not just about growing vegetables”相呼应。故选C。

56.the 57.measuring 58.composition 59.to catch 60.are hurrying 61.are 62.whose 63.what 64.to 65.valuable
空格后“capital of the Song Dynasty” (宋朝的都城)是对“Bianjing(汴京)”的同位语,需用定冠词the修饰。故填the。
故填to catch。
且主语travelers为复数,be动词为are。故填are hurrying。
故填are。
故填what。
serve as a window to...“作为通往……的窗口”。故填to。

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly, and he needed every detail checked. Nothing could risk his winning. Winning wasn’t just important; it was everything the only time he felt truly seen among the indifference (冷漠) of his fellow students.
He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there. The other students, however, rarely approached him. Their glances were either distant or competitive, and Tom, too proud to reach out first, kept to himself.
Time was passing, and he finally got his rocket ready. Everything about it was perfect. A flood of confidence washed over him as he examined the other rockets, quickly finding problems that would affect their flight. But one rocket stood out: shining like polished silver, professionally crafted. His critical eye told him this one could beat his.
A thin boy lifted it gently. “Hi, your rocket’s awesome,” the boy said, a shy smile on his lips.
“Thanks,” Tom replied flatly, then regretfully added, “Yours too-really professional.”
“I’ve been working on it all summer,” the boy said, his eyes lighting up. “By the way, I’m Ed. Good luck.”
“Tom. You too,” Tom replied, shaken by the unexpected kindness. For the first time, he wondered if winning was everything.
The competition began. Rockets launched. Some crashed immediately; others climbed, but none came close to the heights Tom’s rockets had hit previously.
Tom watched, but felt no satisfaction. His stomach sank as he watched Ed prepare. Suddenly, his heart skipped a beat. He noticed a tiny gap between a fin (机翼) and the fuselage (机身) — a loose fin that would ruin the flight. But Ed, unaware, glanced at Tom and gave him a thumbs-up. Tom knew he had to decide.
“Next contestant: Ed Malovich!” the announcer called. Ed nodded, took a deep breath, and carefully carried his silver rocket to the launch pad. The crowd quieted, all eyes fixed on the craft.

Just as Ed was about to press the button, Tom came up. “Wait!” he called out, his voice firm yet gentle. Ed turned around, confused, as Tom pointed to the loose fin. “There’s a gap here — it’ll make your rocket crash,” Tom explained, reaching out to steady the fin lightly. “Let me help you fix it; it’ll only take a minute.” Ed’s eyes widened with surprise and gratitude, and together they tightened the fin quickly. When they finished, Tom smiled, feeling a warmth he’d never known before — warmer than any victory. “Now you’re ready,” he said sincerely.
The announcer called out loudly, declaring Ed the winner. The crowd cheered, and Ed turned to Tom, rushing over to hug him tightly. “Thank you so much — you could’ve won easily!” Ed said excitedly. Tom shook his head, smiling calmly. “Winning isn’t everything,” he said, finally understanding the truth he’d doubted earlier. “Your kindness matters more.” From that day on, Tom no longer kept to himself. He and Ed became good friends, and Tom learned that being seen wasn’t about winning contests, but about sharing kindness and connecting with others.

I didn't always understand why hosting mattered so much to me.I grew up as an only child.Every night our
family of three sat together over the dinner, talking about our days. The table was small, but the ritual
was large.A few times a year, our quiet kitchen expanded into something else entirely. My parents would host a
dinner for about 12 in our formal dining room and the energy would shift-various voices, vivid gestures,
conversations across the table.Even as a child,I felt drawn to that feeling.Interestingly,my wife,Talia, grew up in
a home where hosting felt effortless.More chairs appeared when needed.Extra food somehow materialized.Old

Hosting is often messy and even chaotic,as it is.What surprises us is how often guests will pause at the door
and say,"I didn't realize how much I needed this."They are people with tight schedules. What they are missing
weren't activities. It was being with other people without a timetable,a screen,or a reason to leave early.
After our friends finally left that recent Friday night, the empty house still felt full.It struck me then that the
dining table does more than feed people. In a world that pulls us in every direction,it has become easy to forget

Although the effectiveness of this method in different regions remains uncertain, the researchers believe
that their AI model has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy when carried out in regions equipped with
dependable seismic monitoring facilities.Their next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, where the
University of Texas's TexNet operates a network of 300 earthquake stations and over six years'worth of
continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Ultimately, the authors aim to combine the system with physics-based models. This approach could be
particularly valuable in areas characterized by limited or inadequate data."That may be a long way off,but many
advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,"concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau's
director.

more fictional than real. There are examples of great minds who did their best work alone, but over the course of
history, groundbreaking insights tend to prefer groups of people sharing, reviewing, and evaluating each other's
ideas through shared social networks.
Innovation clusters (are a modern interpretation on this historic trend. These hotbeds of creative
businesses produce new technologies at fantastic rates. These businesses attract money, talent, and experienced
workers, and then more new industries can be attracted to the area. Why they work and how they operate can cast
light on the nature of innovation and offer a blueprint for a more inventive future.
The idea that businesses tend to cluster isn't new. However, the idea of purposefully concentrating
businesses together to focus on innovation, research, and development is more recent. The results have been mixed
but are absolutely breathtaking when they turn out.
The best example is California's Silicon Valley, where thousands of high-tech companies are based. In 2018,
the Brookings Institution investigated Silicon Valley. It reported the density (of firms within a given area
was regarded as a crucial element, with more firms often leading to higher productivity increases for the region.
However, innovation clusters aren't a risk-free move. There are cases of clusters that ultimately came to
nothing.Malaysia's Bio Valley,an attempt to create an innovation cluster, was such an example. While the
Malaysian government made a large amount of funding available for this project, the businesses could not take
advantage of it.Bio valley lacked enough skilled workers for the proposed companies, and it had difficulties
convincing qualified workers from elsewhere to come to Malaysia.Besides,it lacked local demand for
biotechnology to keep new businesses running once started.Just because an area would like to be the site of a new
innovation cluster doesn't mean it can be
