Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.
Watch movies

Read magazines
If you want to improve vocabulary, don’t just flip through your favourite magazine, really read it.
Listen to how words sound
Many people won’t remember tricky words unless they come across them frequently. But if you hear a word that you think sounds interesting, you become word conscious (有意识的) and start using it yourself, says Neuman.
Join a book club
“Book clubs are a wonderful strategy to learn new words,” says Neuman. Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, but it’s also a good way to discover books you might not normally be drawn to.
Listen to the radio
Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with. Don’t miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don’t know.
Pay attention to your surroundings
Next time walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe what you’re seeing as much as possible inside your head.

“When I was young, I had so much energy and I loved building things. If I had an idea, I had to build it right now using what I could find around me,” says Danish artist Thomas Dambo. When Dambo was seven years old, he bought a mountain of cushions (垫子) from a nearby market to build a game room in his parents’ house. As a teenager, he built a “crazy” castle in his backyard.
Years later, 42-year-old Dambo is proudly showing his latest work: a giant (巨人) called Little Lui. Five meters tall, Little Lui is one of the six giants placed in the corners of Peel Region of Western Australia, which will be on show for at least a year. This work makes Dambo’s giants up to 99 around the world. His gentle giants have found homes in many different countries, as far as the United States, Belgium, China, Denmark, South Korea and now in Australia.
“For me, giants represent (代表) the voice of nature,” Dambo says. This deep respect for nature is the focus of Dambo’s building works. Dambo’s giants are made almost from local recycled wood: their faces from second-hand furniture and their hair from tree branches and leaves. Taking about 750 hours to complete, each giant is built out in nature.
“I hope by visiting the giants, people will think of rubbish as a resource. I think it’s really important that next generations are connected to nature,” Dambo says. “That’s why I tried to build the giants to attract young people. I want people to be inspired and to realize they don’t need a lot to create something big and beautiful.”

Do you love seeing beautiful lanterns outside? The best time to do this is during the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar (阴历) month. This year it is on Feb22, marking the end of Spring Festival celebrations.
Lanterns are a big part of the festival. One story says that the bright lanterns show respect for gods. Another says that people light lanterns to celebrate the declining (消退的) darkness of winter.
Watching lanterns is a great event. You see lanterns in any sizes and shapes you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. To make this activity more fun, people paste (粘贴) riddles (谜语) on the lanterns. “Ten plus ten, still is ten, ten minus ten, again is ten.” Guess what? It is a pair of gloves.
In some places, people like releasing sky lanterns, which are called Kongming lanterns. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom, where there is a small fire source. When the bright lights fly high in the sky, people bless family members and make wishes. Releasing river lights is also a way to bless for each other. Usually, the lights are in the shape of a lotus (荷花).
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this: “Anxiously, I searched for her in thousands, hundreds of ways. Suddenly I turned, and there she was in the declining light.”
28.When do people celebrate the Lantern Festival?
A.On the 22nd day of the first lunar month.
B.On the 15th day of the first solar month.
C.On the 22nd day of February every year.
D.On the 15th day of the first lunar month.
29.Which of the following statements about the Lantern Festival is TRUE?
A.People paste riddles to show off their knowledge.
B.Young girls were not allowed to go out on the day.
C.People light lanterns to drive animals away.
D.People make wishes when releasing lights.
30.How do you feel about the line from Xin Qiji?
A.Sad. B.Scared. C.Romantic. D.Anxious.
31.What would be the best title for the text?
A.The Origin of the Lantern Festival
B.River Lights on the Lantern Festival
C.Celebrations of the Lantern Festival
D.A day to Guess Lantern Riddles

Everyone has "down days". Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the disappointing grades on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms(症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet with friends to prevent themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two lasting weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries(边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible(灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that thought they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for an agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect and support their teen’s choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t enjoy the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach that there are bad results for poor choices that come with increased freedom.
32.Why do teen’s feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly?
A.Their teachers help them. B.They take some medicine.
C.Their parents talk with them. D.They change their attention.
33.What does the example in paragraph 3 show?
A.Freedom must be given at anytime.
B.Teens are mad at being controlled.
C.Teens need both freedom and proper rules.
D.Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
34.What should parents do about their teens’ choices?
A.Support their helpful hobbies.
B.Tell them which college to attend.
C.Cancel(取消) their after-school activities.
D.Get them away from singing pop songs.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Be With Growing Teens
B.Causes of Teens’ Sadness
C.Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules
D.The Importance of Making Friends With Teens

Getting Along Well with Parents
Parent-child relationship is one of the most important relationships in our growth. But sometimes, we may have small conflicts with our parents because of different ideas. In fact, as long as we master some simple methods, we can make the relationship more harmonious. Here are some practical tips to help you get along better with your parents.
__36__
When your parents talk to you, put down your phone or books, look them in the eyes, and listen to them carefully until they finish. This shows that you pay attention to what they are saying.Don’t interrupt them halfway or rush to argue. Listening not only helps you understand your parents’ thoughts, but also makes them feel respected.
Take the Initiative to Share Your Life
Parents always care about our daily life, but they may not know how to ask. __37__ For example, when you get home, tell them interesting things at school, your interactions with classmates, or small difficulties you meet in study. Taking the initiative to share can shorten the distance between you, making parents feel you are willing to communicate with them instead of shutting them out.
Understand Parents from Another Perspective
Sometimes we feel that parents don’t understand us, but on the other hand, we may not think from their side either.__ 38 __Their requirements may be a bit strict, but their starting point is always to make us better. When you doubt your parents’ actions, try to think: “If I were a parent, what would I do?” This may help reduce many unnecessary conflicts.
Express Your Ideas Politely
If your parents’ ideas are different from yours, don’t lose your temper or resist in silence.__ 39 __For example, use sentences like “Mom/Dad, I know you care about me, but I think…” This way, you show respect for them and clearly express your own views. A polite way of communication is easier for parents to accept your ideas and avoid the escalation of conflicts.
Show Care Through Small Actions
Besides verbal communication, some small actions can also make parents feel your love. ____40___ For example, take the initiative to help Mom wash the dishes, give Dad a back rub, or say “Happy Birthday” to them on their special day. These little things are simple but can warm their hearts.
A. It’s important to keep calm and talk to them politely.
B. Learn to Listen Carefully.
C. They have more life experience and just want to protect you.
D. You don’t need to do big things to make them happy.
E. So take the first step to share your life with them.
F. Parents are always the people who love us the most in the world.
G. Try to talk to your parents every day, even for a short time.

第二节(满分15分)
Tom had always feared public speaking—even answering questions in class made his palms(手掌、手心) sweat(出汗)) and voice crack. So when his English teacher announced a class speech contest, he immediately shook his head. But his best friend Jake, a challenge-lover, patted his shoulder: “This is your chance to face fear! I will practice with you every day after school.” Tom hesitated—he’d avoided attention for years, but the thought of overcoming(克服) his panic tempted(诱惑) him. Finally, he nodded.
For two weeks, they practiced in the empty classroom. Tom started with reading short paragraphs, then speaking without notes. He stammered(结巴) at first but gradually grew more comfortable. Yet on the contest eve, panic struck. Lying in bed, he imagined freezing on stage and everyone laughing. He texted Jake: “I can’t do it—I’m dropping out.”
The next morning, Tom avoided Jake, hiding in the library. But at lunch, Jake found him staring at his untouched sandwich. “You’re not quitting, right?” Jake said, sitting down. Tom’s eyes filled with worry: “I’ll mess up(出错、搞砸)—everyone will think I’m stupid.” Jake pulled out his phone, showing a video of his own first speech—he’d frozen mid-sentence and ran off. “I was worse, but I tried again. Fear isn’t the enemy—giving up is.” Tom stared at the video, then his friend. He thought about how far he’d come. Maybe it was time to stop running.

【范文1】
When Tom’s name was called, he walked onto the stage with shaky legs, his mind going blank for a second. He spotted Jake in the front row, giving him a thumbs-up and a big smile. Taking a deep breath, Tom started speaking—his voice was soft at first, but as he talked about his love for hiking, the words flowed more naturally. He forgot to be nervous, focusing on sharing his stories. When he finished, the class erupted in applause. Tom bowed, his cheeks warm but his heart light—he hadn’t won, but he’d beaten his fear.
范文二
When Tom’s name was called, he walked onto the stage with shaky legs, his mind going blank for a second. Gripping the microphone tightly, he closed his eyes and recalled Jake’s video and their late-afternoon practices. Opening them, he began his speech about overcoming self-doubt. A few stumbles came, but he kept going, his voice growing steadier. By the end, he even managed a small smile. The crowd cheered loudly, and Jake waved excitedly. Tom stepped off stage, grinning—he didn’t get the school final spot, but he’d won a far bigger victory.
