Since her older brother Sam was found to have cancer two years ago, Tess Short often has struggled to sleep at night. After some comfort from her parents that her brother would be alright, followed by some softly-spoken words and hugs for her teddy bear, Tess would feel better.
This bear has been a help for the fourth-grader and it inspired her to write and self-publish a picture book called “The Worry-Free Bear”, which follows the journey of a young girl named Caroline with cancer and how a toy animal helps her through the difficult time and eventually become cancer-free.
Tess wrote the piece during a writing workshop in school. At first, the journal exercise served simply as an emotional release for the young girl, but it has since taken on a life of its own.
With the help of her teachers, Tess and her family launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce the book, buy small teddy bears to accompany it and distribute them to children’s hospitals and school libraries throughout the region. To date, they’ve received roughly $10,000 in donations. They plan to buy at least 500 books and toy animals and make a monetary donation to nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Jana Holland, Tess’s third-grade teacher, was impressed by the emotions expressed in the story. “She wrote this book as treatment for herself without realizing it might be treatment for others to read it,” said Holland, who illustrated the published version. “What a mature way to handle a situation that is heartbreaking, that most people can’t even imagine. The book has a way of teaching understanding and how important it is to support each other.”
For Tess, the message she hopes to deliver to children and family members reading her book is simple: “You can do hard things.” It’s something her main character, Caroline, says in the story, and the words have become a belief the Shorts hold onto throughout Sam’s illness. Most of all, Tess wants everyone reading her book to understand one thing: “It’s OK to worry.”
4. What inspired Tess to write a picture book?
A. Her teddy bear’s role. B. Her teachers’ encouragement.
C. Her brother’s recovery. D. Her school’s writing workshop.
5. Which word best describes the Kickstarter campaign?
A. Educational. B. Promotional. C. Charitable. D. Sustainable.
6. What does Holland think of the book?
A. It needs better illustrations. B. It teaches medical knowledge.
C. It shows youthful imagination. D. It comforts people in hard times.
7. What does Tess mainly want readers to learn?
A. Seek help when necessary.
B. Stay strong during illness.
C. Accept negative emotions.
D. Overcome fears with love.

Chinese researchers have developed a 3D hand-shaped microrobot measuring about 40 micrometers, smaller than the diameter of a human hair, to achieve precise movements such as the grasping, delivering, and releasing of particles or cells, according to a research article published in the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing.
Microrobots play an essential role in early medical checks and accurate treatment, given increasing demands for better control over tools in bio-medicine and micromanipulation. Microrobots can do this well, so they help doctors find patients’ health problems earlier and provide treatments that fit each patient.
However the research says most microrobots have a problem, in which they are currently made of a single material system, with their production process focused on a driving module as the main structure. This makes it hard for one microrobot to combine various functions, which are necessary for completing complex jobs.
To fix this, researchers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) created this hand-shaped microrobot. As CAS explained, when using the robot, researchers first put it in a liquid. When the surrounding pH value changes, the microrobot’s “palm” unfolds or folds like flower petals—just like your hand pulls back automatically when touching hot water. Guided by a magnetic field, this microrobot can avoid obstacles and target particles or cells. When the liquid turns acidic (酸性的), its “palm” shuts to hold the target tightly. Then the robot turns and adjusts its direction to take the target to the right place. When the liquid becomes alkaline (碱性的), the “palm” opens again to release the particles or cells.
Researchers say this robot may soon be used to control cells, carry drugs for accurate treatment, and even help protect the environment.
8. What can we learn about the 3D hand-shaped microrobot?
A. It has a wide range of applications in industry.
B. It has a diameter equal to that of a human hair.
C. It was first reported in a Chinese scientific journal.
D. It can perform precise actions like grabbing cells.
9. Why can’t most current microrobots finish complex tasks?
A. They are made of some complex materials.
B. They can’t work in the liquid environments.
C. Their single-material design limits them to a single function.
D. Their production process overemphasizes the driving module.
10. What can we infer about the “palm” of the microrobot?
A. It has the same softness as a human hand.
B. Its movement is related to the liquid’s pH.
C. It can only function properly in acidic liquid.
D. It requires a magnetic field to open and close fully.
11. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Differences Between Old and New Microrobots
B. The History of Microrobot Research in China
C. A New Microrobot for Medical and Environmental Uses
D A New Hand-Shaped Microrobot by Chinese Researchers
D
Have you ever wondered what happens to that single-use plastic bottle after you place it in a recycling bin? Most people assume it’ll be recycled, sooner or later. Unfortunately, the reality is far more complex. More often than not, that bottle starts a long and tough global journey, frequently ending up in other countries.
Under ideal circumstances, it’s cleaned, sorted and broken down into small pieces to produce new items like packaging. If it is packaging itself that has been thrown, it’ll probably end up as a form of fuel. In other situations, however, it is shipped to landfills in developing regions, potentially polluting soil and water, endangering wildlife, and perhaps even finding its way back into your home through the global fish trade.
In his book Waste Wars, journalist Alexander Clapp follows rubbish, travelling to some of the world’s most unpleasant places. There, he documents villages buried under mountains of imported plastic, and areas where workers take apart electronic waste from developed nations to extract valuable metals. Through these accounts, he reveals the global trade in waste and various influences it brings. While some waste trades are beneficial-such as China’s past use of imported plastic as industrial raw materials, or Turkey’s change of scrap metal into highways and skyscrapers—many shipments contain non-recyclable materials, causing serious problems.
The Basel Convention, which came into effect in 1992, dealt with the shipment of dangerous waste but left plenty of loopholes (漏洞). Thus, many countries have been trying to stop waste imports ever since. In 2017, China, once one of the largest importers of plastic waste for recycling, banned such imports. Similar bans in Thailand and Indonesia went into effect this year.
Then, what is to be done?
There is no easy solution! Producers are required to take more responsibility for what they make. However, balancing environmental and economic goals remains constantly difficult, especially given varied national conditions. Greater global awareness and cooperation are therefore extremely important to tackle this pressing issue.
12. What can be inferred from the generally-believed way of plastic bottle recycling?
A. It is more idealistic than practical. B. It is far from complex and tough.
C. It lives up to people’s expectations. D. It reflects the actual process of recycling.
13. What is the BEST possible result for a recycled plastic bottle?
A. Buried in landfills. B. Used as factory fuel.
C. Turned into new packaging. D. Shipped to another country.
14. Why is Clapp’s book Waste Wars mentioned?
A. To criticize international waste shipment. B. To illustrate the global waste trade’s impacts.
C. To showcase recycling is seldom successful. D. To promote the economic benefits of waste.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the book Waste Wars by Alexander Clapp.
B. To appeal to the public to raise their environmental awareness.
C. To indicate how recycling systems work in different countries.
D. To reveal challenges and complexities of global waste recycling.

Emily and Zoe had been best friends since second grade. They went to the same school, played on the same soccer team, and even wore matching bracelets (手链). Everyone around them said they were like two sides of the same coin. They believed nothing could come between them. But things started to change when a new girl Daisy came to their class.
One day, their teacher, Mr. Lynn, announced a big group project. “Pick a partner,” he said. Emily immediately turned to Zoe, expecting her usual smile and a quick “yes.” But to her surprise. Zoe was already talking to Daisy. “I’m going to work with Daisy this time,” Zoe said to Emily, almost too casually. Emily felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She nodded and forced a smile, but inside, she was confused and hurt. That night, she stared at her phone screen, hoping for a message that never came.
Over the next few days, she avoided Zoe. Their texts stopped, they no longer sat together during lunch, and the bracelets they once wore daily were now left at home. Even during class, Emily found it hard to focus, her mind replaying the moment when Zoe chose someone else.
Weeks passed. The school organized a three-day camping trip in the mountains. Students were divided into several groups. Emily and Zoe ended up in the same one, along with Daisy and two other classmates. Though they barely spoke, they worked together to put up tents and gather firewood. Their conversations were limited to short, polite exchanges — nothing like before.
On the second night, dark clouds rolled in and heavy rain soon followed. Everyone rushed into their own tents. Emily quickly discovered that hers was leaking. Cold and upset, she went outside, seeking for help. The wind howled around her, and each raindrop felt like a tiny needle against her skin.

【答案】Dear William,
I’m writing to express my preference for the venue of the upcoming “Stress Relief and Team Building” activity. I strongly suggest choosing the natural park over the amusement park.
Firstly, the fresh air and beautiful scenery in the natural park can calm our minds and ease stress effectively. Secondly, we can organize team games like frisbee or hiking there, which can strengthen our teamwork in a relaxed way. Unlike the noisy amusement park, it’s more suitable for our activity goals.
I would appreciate it if you can take my suggestions into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Just then, she saw a flashlight approaching. In the dim light, Emily recognized it was nobody else but Zoe. Her face was filled with concern when she saw Emily struggling in the cold. “I thought you might need help,” Zoe said softly. Emily’s eyes widened with a mix of surprise and relief. Without a word, Zoe stepped forward and examined the tent. She explained that she could fix it with the spare raincoat she had brought. As they worked together, the awkwardness gradually melted away. Emily realized that Zoe still cared and the rain seemed to have washed away the misunderstandings between them.
With Zoe’s help, they soon fixed the tent. Back inside the tent, Emily took a deep breath and said, “I was so hurt when you chose Daisy for the project.” Zoe looked at her apologetically and replied, “I’m sorry. I just thought it would be better to include the new comer, but I never meant to hurt you.” That night, they had an open-hearted conversation, clearing up all the confusion. Until then did they realize that friends need open communication and their bond became even stronger. From then on, they wore their matching bracelets again, a symbol of their unbreakable friendship.
