The joy of missing out
1 “They’re all at that party without me…I’ve got such bad FOMO.” The fear of missing out, or ‘FOMO’, is what you might feel when you aren’t present when something exciting or enjoyable is happening. This anxiety is rife in the age of social media, where we’re exposed to an avalanche of updates about other people’s holidays, social events and achievements. Many find themselves comparing their lives to others’, forgetting that social media is often a smokescreen, where we only see the highlight reel and a veneer of perfection.
2 As an antidote to this constant pressure, many are embracing ‘JOMO’—the joy of missing out. According to Svend Brinkmann, author of ‘The Joy of Missing Out: The Art of Self-Restraint in an Age of Excess’, the difference is that where FOMO gets us to worry about things outside of the present moment, JOMO brings us back to the here and now, encouraging us to enjoy life offline with people we truly care about. Embracing JOMO means switching off outside noise and focusing on what really brings us happiness. So, how can we stop FOMO from rearing its ugly head?
3 In her book ‘The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less’, Tanya Dalton suggests making a list of activities that bring you joy and displaying them somewhere obvious to remind you to include them in your day. She also suggests a regular digital detox and carving out time for self-care, whether that’s a warm bath, a solo nature walk or your favourite movie. Kristen Fuller, a physician and mental health writer, says it’s about being intentional with your time. This involves scheduling activities which are important to you and practising saying “no” to people if you feel like their request will have a negative impact on you.
4 A 2019 article by Ana Jorge, published in Social Media + Society looked into the experiences of people who purposefully disconnect from social media. Some of them felt they were living more mindfully, and that the disconnection allowed them to be more creative and productive. About JOMO, one participant told researchers, “I don’t have to be everywhere, I don’t have to be with everyone and I don’t have to know everything.” Perhaps it’s time to unplug and try living life in the slow lane.

Don’t Let Your Comfort Zone Become a Prison
Where do you go when you’ve reached the summit of a mountain? The answer is simple: You find another mountain 1 (climb).
Fan Zhendong, one of the world’s 2 (fine) table tennis players, embodies this spirit. The 28-year-old from Guangzhou claimed the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, 3 (add) to his previous titles at the World Championships and the World Cup. After some disagreements with the International Table Tennis Federation, he contemplated (考虑接受) retirement. However, he eventually 4 (choose) a different path. Instead of stepping away, Fan left his “comfort zone” in China and moved to Germany to join a team in the Table Tennis Bundesliga, the country’s top professional table tennis league. 5 (know) for its high level of competition, the league features world-class players and clubs.
A “comfort zone” is a space — whether physical or mental — 6 we feel secure and unchallenged, free from the pressure to learn or strive. While it may sound wonderful, remaining too long in this state carries the risk of stagnation (停滞) — much like a clear pond that gradually becomes choked with weeds.
Fan had no desire to stagnate or rest on his laurels. He decided to pursue new challenges and improve his skills in a completely unfamiliar environment.
I deeply relate to Fan’s decision to step 7 the familiar. Many years ago, I left my own comfort zone in Canada and moved to China. I wanted to test myself to see if I 8 survive and eventually thrive in a country with a radically different language and culture. There were difficult moments, without doubt, but I learned to adapt, and in doing so, I grew. I have experienced and achieved things that would have been impossible if I had chosen to stay where I felt safe.
Not everything in life comes easily, but 9 well we grow depends, to a large extent, on the challenges we take. Even failure can become a source of strength if we’re willing to learn from it. Just as English poet Robert Browning wrote, “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp.” It suggests that we should always strive for something just beyond our current capabilities, 10 this continuous pursuit of higher goals drives personal growth.
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A.press B.permanent C. physical D.perception E. exist F. unfold
G. ashamed H. exit I. crisis J. daring K. prejudice
Faith has such power because next to love it is the force most inherent in one’s own awareness. It directs to the light when darkness is upon us; it supplies incentives to action and turns ideas into realities. It fires the imagination, and this is essential, for one must envision the future and behave as if it were a fact before it can 11 . It is faith that lights us into sustaining realities beyond those perceived by the 12 senses.
Faith never despairs. Confronted with defeat, faith still lays up unseen treasures. Let the circumstances be ever so horrible, to choose faith is to create.
Defeat is nothing to be 13 of; it is routine in digging the gold of one’s personality. I have known people of faith who were defeated times without number and with whom I never associated failure. To succeed and remain mediocre is despicable. Defeat is simply a signal to 14 onward and a gateway to mental adventure that makes dull days exciting and causes the blood to sing. That is the meaning of the saying that victory is great, but defeat, if necessary, is greater.
Faith is mental 15 of what is good, together with a steady endeavor to live it despite all obstacles. I say obstacles because everything that is easy was once difficult. Ease is like rest, and like rest it can become stagnation. Without resistance, the bodily powers shrivel. Would the infant ever learn to walk or talk if it did not struggle?
Serious harm, I am afraid, has been done to our generation by fostering the idea that they would live secure in a 16 order of things. It has tended to weaken their imagination and unfit them for independent steering of their destinies. Before it is too late, they must learn and teach others that only by brave acceptance of change and all-time 17 can they rise to the height of superlative responsibility. That is what the heroes of the nineteenth century did. They were not content to meet immediate danger in a self-denying manner. They went on from there and tore loose from a 18 , a stale custom, and an out-of-date maxim. So can we.
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not 19 in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the longer run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a 20 adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.
The coming of a new year marks a fresh start and motivates many people to break bad habits. Some are easier to shake than others. However, the tendency to procrastinate is among the stickiest. Whether it’s finishing a piece of work, sending an email or going for a run, some tasks can become unconquerable. The easiest way to deal with these tasks is to put them off until later or never at all. It’s procrastination. It is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary. 22 At its heart, procrastination is about avoidance. Rather than the task itself, it’s often the emotions attached to an activity that cause people to pause. Handling the first lines of a college essay may bring up feelings of self-doubt, for example. When you’re faced with a broad question or topic to write about, the lack of clear instructions can produce a fear of not getting it right or of what might happen if you get it wrong.
The person procrastinating usually does so despite knowing that the task is important or valuable to them or others, and that putting it off could be risky to them or others. Big projects may bring overpowering feelings which are likely to lead to procrastination. 23 Answering an ordinary email from work, for example, may bring instant discomfort, so the urge to escape such negative emotion defeats one’s duty to complete the daily task.
Like any personality character, there are some biological connections. Research suggests that procrastination is linked to impatience on a genetic level. It may be a passed-down property. 24 Environmental factors are just as important in shaping our response to tasks. Someone who doesn’t usually procrastinate can do so if they find themselves in a situation that exhausts their responding abilities, such as the death of a family member. 25
Of course, procrastination can pile on more pressures by leaving a task hanging over a person’s head, thus producing a negative cycle that can damage mental health, lower academic performance and lead to financial trouble.
A.But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck and that’s who you are.
B.Procrastination becomes an easy and ‘dirty’ way of reaction when your handling resources are maxed out.
C.Chances are that you will find yourself supported by procrastination all along.
D.It isn’t caused by the person’s need to prioritize other tasks or by an unexpected emergency.
E.You will become increasingly frustrated with yourself for not getting the task done.
F.However, the threat can also come from something tiny.
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Trouble of Over-pathologizing to Schools
In the past, young people didn’t discuss their mental health. But nowadays, it feels like there is a mental health awareness campaign almost every week. However, this societal push to talk about mental health might not be helping everyone. In fact, it could be making things worse.
These campaigns encourage people to interpret essentially all negative thoughts and feelings as symptoms of a disorder or a problem, consequently making them feel unnecessarily weak and leading them to view themselves as having a disorder when they don’t. This kind of over-pathologizing may lead to further problems in schools. An increasing number of young people are saying that they don’t want to do something by labeling themselves as having anxiety.
Sometimes, the most appropriate response is to make adjustments for that person. For example, they shouldn’t be asked questions in class, or they shouldn’t have to sit exams in a big hall. But this genuine, useful principle has been blown out of proportion. In some cases, students in schools are automatically being given excessive freedom or privileges with no intention to ever review them.
The trouble is that the worst thing you can do in terms of managing anxiety in the long run is to allow people to avoid the things that scare them. Actually, the most useful therapeutic approach is to support them, step by step, in facing their fears. If, with support, they gradually do the things that make them anxious, they learn two things: first, that it isn’t as bad as they thought it would be, and second, that even if it is bad, they can cope.
So there needs to be a better understanding of who really needs one-to-one support and who can be supported simply by teachers being helpful, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach to adjustments.

1.to climb 2.finest 3.adding 4.chose 5.Known 6.where 7.beyond/outside 8.could 9.how 10.as/because/since
故填to climb。
根据“one of the world’s”可知,此处应用形容词fine的最高级finest,表示“最优秀的”,作定语,修饰table tennis players。故填finest。
故填where。
根据下文“left my own comfort zone”可知,此处表示“走出熟悉的环境”,step beyond/outside均有“超出,走出” 之意,故填beyond/outside。
故填could。
故填as/because/since。

情态动词can后接动词原形,结合语“envision the future and behave as if it were a fact”可知,只有先设想并行动,未来才会慢慢呈现,动词unfold“逐渐显现;展开”符合题意。故选F。
故选A。

空处修饰名词order,结合后文“weaken their imagination and unfit them for independent steering of their destinies”可知,这种“永恒不变的”秩序观念会削弱人的想象力,形容词permanent“永恒的;永久的”符合题意。故选B。
故选I。
空处与 “a stale custom, and an out-of-date maxim” 并列作宾语,均指需要摆脱的负面事物,名词 prejudice“偏见;成见” 符合题意。故选K。
助动词does not后接动词原形,结合前文“Security is mostly a superstition”可知,安全感并不真实存在,动词exist“存在”符合题意。

【答案】22.D 23.F 24.A 25.B
22.前文“It’s procrastination. It is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary. 引入拖延的话题,介绍其性质,后文“At its heart, procrastination is about avoidance. Rather than the task itself, it’s often the emotions attached to an activity that cause people to pause. 指出拖延是由逃避与任务相关的情绪导致的,因此D项“It isn’t caused by the person’s need to prioritize other tasks or by an unexpected emergency.
23.前文“Big projects may bring overpowering feelings which are likely to lead to procrastination. 提到大项目可能会导致拖延,后文“Answering an ordinary email from work, for example, may bring instant discomfort, so the urge to escape such negative emotion defeats one’s duty to complete the daily task. 举例具体说明一些日常的小事也会导致拖延,因此F项“However, the threat can also come from something tiny.
24.前文“Research suggests that procrastination is linked to impatience on a genetic level. It may be a passed-down property. 提到拖延可能是一种遗传下来的内在特性,后文“Environmental factors are just as important in shaping our response to tasks. 指出外界的环境因素也会影响拖延,因此A项“But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck and that’s who you are. 故选A。
25.前文“Environmental factors are just as important in shaping our response to tasks. Someone who doesn’t usually procrastinate can do so if they find themselves in a situation that exhausts their responding abilities, such as the death of a family member. 指出外界的环境因素也会影响拖延,举例说明人的反应能力被耗尽时会拖延,因此B项“Procrastination becomes an easy and ‘dirty’ way of reaction when your handling resources are maxed out.
