Do you often sweep the fallen leaves in your schoolyard? Could they pollute our environment?
Some people suggest leaving leaves on the ground instead of collecting them. The idea is to avoid sending bagged-up fallen leaves to landfills*. Instead, they will naturally turn into something nutritious**. Leaving the leaves is one of the best ways to turn yard waste into free fertilizer***, which is good for the environment and saves money. But it is important to think about the type of leaves that are falling and where they are landing. Whole leaves should not be left on walkways, because they could make the ground so slippery that people will fall down easily. They should also not be left on grassland, because they are likely to cause disease. In areas without snow, whole leaves that cover grass stop water and sunlight from reaching the ground below.
Many people choose to break up the leaves and let the pieces fall on the grass. Then the pieces break down further in the soil. Another way is to take the leaves off the grass and spread them to cover garden beds. They will mostly break down by spring. Leaves can also be used to make a type of fertilizer. Just put them in a comer and water them to keep them from drying out. It may take a year or two, but the leaves will break down into a nutritious soil.
So, why waste the fallen leaves?
* The word “landfill” means a large deep hole in which lots of rubbish is buried.
** The word “nutritious” as an adjective (adj.) here means being helpful for the plants to grow.
*** The word “fertilizer” means something added to the soil to make plants grow better.
39.The underlined word “slippery” means “________” in Paragraph 2.
A.soft and comfortable B.smooth and wet
C.hard and beautiful D.clean and dry
40.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.The pollution of fallen leaves.

41.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To encourage people to sweep fallen leaves.
B.To show the beauty of fallen leaves.
C.To ask people not to waste fallen leaves.
D.To show the harm of fallen leaves.

【难度】0.65
【知识点】环境保护、说明文

①Making healthy choices is important. Eating the right food, staying active and getting enough sleep can help your body in lots of ways.
②Picking the right food gives you the energy to do all the things you love. It also helps your body grow and your brain develop. Eating things such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains (全谷物) is good for your health. However, being healthy doesn’t mean you can never eat snacks. It’s about making sure you have a balanced diet. “When you choose a balanced diet, you’ll have more energy, feel better and be able to do the things you love,” Lucy Upton, a children’s dietitian (营养学家), says.
③Another healthy choice you can make is being active—whether it’s sports, going for a walk or playing a game of “it”. Being active helps your brain make special chemicals. These chemicals can relax your body and calm your mind. Being active can help your body and your mind stay fighting fit. Feeling fit can make you feel better and more confident about yourself. When you play a ball game with others, you can even make new friends.
④Finally, getting enough sleep is also very important. Sleep helps your body grow. While you sleep, your brain is busy building new connections and your body is repairing itself. Preparing properly for bedtime helps you stay asleep. A good way to tire yourself out is by getting plenty of exercise during the day, like walking to and from school or doing sports. Take an hour or two to rest or relax after a period of activities before bed. Don’t drink tea or coffee, and turn off phones, computers and video games. Try reading a book instead.
⑤Remember: making healthy choices is key to keep your body and your mind fit and strong. Let’s get started now!

A new study has uncovered a different optimal (最佳的) number of daily steps for better health, differing from the long-recognized 10,000-step guideline.
Published in The Lancet Public Health on Wednesday, this research examined a large number of previous studies conducted between January 1, 2014 and February 14, 2025. The results showed that when compared to individuals who take around 2,000 steps per day, those who walk 7,000 steps daily enjoy notable health benefits. They have a 47% lower risk of death, a 38% lower risk of dementia, and a 25% lower risk of heart disease. Additionally, their risk of dying from heart disease is 47% lower, and the risk of dying from cancer is 37% lower. Although the risk of developing cancer is 6% lower, this reduction is not statistically significant. Moreover, 7,000 steps are associated with a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a 22% lower risk of depressive symptoms, and a 28% lower risk of falls.
The study’s authors pointed out that while 10,000 steps per day is suitable for those who are more active, 7,000 steps is a more realistic and achievable target for many, and it still brings meaningful health improvements. Even 4,000 steps a day is better than 2,000, as it is linked to a 36% lower risk of death. In essence, any amount of walking you can do in a day is beneficial for both your body and mind.
However, the study does have some limitations. For instance, it lacks an age-specific analysis, and there are only a small number of studies available for most specific health outcomes. The authors expressed hope that the 7,000-step count can serve as a practical public health target, with future studies focusing more on age-specific recommendations.
71.What is the optimal daily step count found in the new study?
72.How much lower is the risk of death for 7,000 steps compared to 2,000 steps?
73.Why is 7,000 steps considered better for many people than 10,000 steps?
74.Which limitation of the study is mentioned in the article?
75.What might help you reach 7,000 daily steps?
【答案】
71.7,000 steps. 72.47% lower. 73.It is more realistic and achievable.
74.It lacks age-specific analysis. 75.Walking more in daily activities.
【难度】0.65

But still, it’s h 80 for him to afford the cost of living. He has to sleep on the streets and is often laughed at by strangers.

According to Sanmao’s e 83 , people learn about the most turbulent (动荡的) moments of Chinese history in the 20th century. This is why even though Sanmao is often seen as “China’s Tintin”, his tale is c 84 to be much darker than that of the Belgian character.

It’s common to have problems between parents and children. I once had a heated argument with my parents about playing computer games. I thought playing games was a good way to relax after studying hard. However, my parents worried that it would affect my grades and health. They wanted me to spend more time on books.
To solve the problem, we sat down and had a calm talk. I expressed my feelings and listened to their worries. Finally, we made a deal. I promised to finish my homework first, and they agreed to let me play for an hour on weekends.

Marge Champion, a dancer and actress who helped bring Disney’s animated Snow White to life, has passed away at 101 in Los Angeles.
Marge Champion was born as Marjorie Celeste Belcher in Los Angeles on September 2, 1919. Her father Ernest Belcher was the famous Hollywood dance teacher. He was friends with Walt Disney.
As a teenager, Marge went to work at the “House of Mouse”. Starting at age 14, she performed for them one or two days a month (for $10 a day) for two years. During that time she became the model for Snow White. When Disney’s animation (动画制作) teams were working on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, they studied young Marge’s movements in order to make the character move more naturally.

B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词。
If asked to name the most famous cartoon character from their country, Americans may say Mickey Mouse. And people in Belgium would proudly m 76 Tintin. And in China, the title would probably go to Sanmao, a thin boy with only three hairs on his head, who was c 77 by the late comic artist Zhang Leping (1910-1992).
Zhang was given the Special Honor award at the International Illustrated Silent Book Contest. Zhang is the first Chinese cartoonist to ever r 78 this prize.
The story of Sanmao starts with his moving to Shanghai to make a living. As an orphan (孤儿), Sanmao has n 79 to depend on and has to take on many different jobs, such as selling newspapers, polishing shoes and performing kung fu. But still, it’s h 80 for him to afford the cost of living. He has to sleep on the streets and is often laughed at by strangers.
Although his living conditions are p 81 , Sanmao is a kind boy who often shares whatever little food he has with homeless people. He is also a boy of integrity (正直). For example, he r 82 to join a group of thieves who promise to feed him every day in exchange for his services.
According to Sanmao’s e 83 , people learn about the most turbulent (动荡的) moments of Chinese history in the 20th century. This is why even though Sanmao is often seen as “China’s Tintin”, his tale is c 84 to be much darker than that of the Belgian character.
The birth of Sanmao also filled a blank (空白) in the Chinese comic i 85 . Using the skill of line-drawing, Zhang wrote no dialogue and used the simplest brushwork to show the complexity of life in old Shanghai.
