His life changed, however, one day when he got a heart-shaped box full of chocolate in the mail, along with a piece of paper that said, “Somebody loves you.” At first, he couldn’t believe it, but as he read the message, he began to laugh and dance around. They surprised him with a party and a long banner (条幅) that read, “Everybody Loves Mr. Hatch.” Mr. Hatch cried when he knew that somebody loved him after all. Louis Tewanima was born to run. When he was a boy in the Hopi village of Shungopavi in Arizona, he had great fun running long distances (距离) across the desert. He often raced alongside the trains. After the trains passed, he would run the 56 miles back home.
Running helped Louis feel good and stay strong in his mind and spirit. But when he grew up, his life changed. In the early 1900s, the U.S. government (政府) made Native American children go to special schools far from home. One day, U.S. soldiers came to Louis’ village, and made him leave his family.
In 1907, Louis went to the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. The weather there was much colder than he was used to, and he missed his family and his desert home. To feel better, he started running again. He saw the school’s track team (田径队) practicing and asked the coach, Glenn S. Warner, if he could join. The coach saw that Louis was very talented and helped him train. Soon. Louis was winning medals and became one of the best distance runners in the United States.
Louis faced many difficulties but never gave up. Once, he missed a train to a race, but he ran 18 miles to get there on time—and still won the race! Louis ran in the 1908 Olympics in London and finished ninth in the marathon. Four years later, he won a silver medal in the 10,000-meter race in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. This was the best the U.S. had ever done in that race for 52 years.
After the Olympics, Louis went back to his village and reunited with his family. He spent his time taking care of sheep and growing corn. In 1954, Louis was named to the U.S. Olympic all-time track and field team. He is remembered as one of the greatest distance runners in U.S. history.
27.Why did Louis run long distances when he was a boy?
A.Because he enjoyed running very much. B.Because he had to train for the Olympics.
C.Because he tried to run away from his village. D.Because he had to help his family with farming.
28.What did Louis do when he was at the Carlisle Indian School?
A.He helped the coach train others. B.He joined the school’s track team.
C.He worked for the U.S. government. D.He wrote letters to his family every day.
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Louis joined the U.S. track and field team in 1908.

Competition is a lot like a game. It’s fun to play games, and we all like to win. But remember, for someone to win, someone else has to lose. Even though it’s not always nice, competition has been around for a very long time. From old Greek games to soccer today, people have always enjoyed competing.
Competition isn’t just in sports. It’s also in business, science, and even when people look for love. Businessmen say that competition helps keep things fair (公平的) in the market. In science, scientists compete for improving people’s lives. Competition seems to be everywhere!
Some people think we are born to compete because it helps us live better. But can we use competition to help others? For example, can we make people save energy (e. g. water and electricity) or take part in volunteer work by competing?
In a study, scientists looked at a competition at Princeton University called “Do-it-in-the- Dark”. Students try to use less electricity, and the group that saved the most won a prize. The study showed that during the competition, students used less electricity. But when the competition ended, they went back to using more electricity. This happened at many other universities too.
The problem is that this kind of competition only works while there’s a prize. Students are more likely to take actions as long as the university maintains the prize. However, in our example, students stopped saving energy as soon as the competition ended. Once there was no prize, people would stop saving energy. This is because people save energy for the prize, not because they care about the environment.
Researchers say that if we want people to keep doing good things, like saving energy, we need them to care about it for the right reasons. We need them to understand why it’s important, not just to win a prize.
So, competition can be fun and helpful sometimes, but it’s not always the best way to get people to do good things. Through cooperation, working together and sharing experience during competitions, people can understand the true meaning of competition and know about the long-term benefits. It’s time we start doing the right thing, for the right reasons.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We should cooperate in the right way.
B.Competition takes place in many fields.
C.Businessmen compete to improve our lives.
D.Cooperating is more important than competing.
31.The example of the “Do-it-in-the-Dark” competition shows that ________.
A.people may do right things because of a prize in competitions
B.competitions can help people get more experience from others
C.competitions can encourage people to reach the long-term goal
D.people should continue to cooperate after winning competitions
32.What does the underlined word “maintains” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A.Chooses. B.Changes. C.Keeps. D.Earns.
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the importance of competition.
B.To help people to face competitions bravely.
C.To give suggestions for winning competitions.
D.To tell people to compete for the right reasons.

Get Lost in the Best Places
What’s your dream neighbourhood (街区) like? Recently, 40 communities have been chosen as the coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2023. Time Out, the magazine that has been hosting this event for six years, considers factors (因素) like community projects (项目), green spaces and lively streets.
At the top of the list is Laureles from Colombia. There’s a famous street called La 70 where all the bars (酒吧) and restaurants turn into dance floors when the right music plays. It also has a big soccer field. You might think this community is quite noisy. But in fact, Laureles is known for being a relaxing neighbourhood. Outside of La 70, you can find peaceful parks, streets with lots of trees and many cafes. It has become a top choice for digital nomads (数字游民), who travel freely while working online on their computers.
If Laureles is a mix (混合体) of both noise and peace, then Sheung Wan in Hong Kong, China, is the perfect mix of the past and the present. Once known for its funeral (丧葬) services, Sheung Wan has become an exciting place. You’ll find old temples (寺庙), antique (古董) stores and dried seafood shops there. And right beside them, there are cool art canters, Melbourne—style cafes and stores for designer clothes. Here, you’ll see citywalkers hanging out with their pets in cafes, and older people visiting cheap markets.
As seen in Laureles and Sheung Wan, our communities are becoming more global (全球化的) than ever. The pandemic (流行病) has changed our lives, leading to the rise of digital nomadism. As a result, there’s a rise in multicultural centres, new community spaces and cafes. With all these changes, our neighbourhoods still feel like home because places like old farmers’ markets and stores stay. Looking ahead, we expect even more exciting neighbourhoods!
34.What factors does Time Out consider when choosing the coolest neighbourhoods?
35.What can people find outside of La 70?
36.Why do our neighbourhoods still feel like home with the changes?
37.Which neighbourhood would you like to live in, Laureles or Sheung Wan? Why do you think so? (Please give two reasons. )

23 I go to a boarding school (寄宿学校) and go home once a week, but I get homesick a lot. I feel down. Can you give me some advice?
A.It might be painful for you. It is best to tell him that you are not interested in him. Of course, tell him that you appreciate his interest in you, but you don’t share the same feelings with him. Also, tell him that his words are making you feel uncomfortable.
B.It can be difficult for anyone to leave home. A good way is by decorating your personal space with things from home or reminding you of home. Still, you can make friends with your classmates, which will help a lot in making school feel like a home.
C. You can talk with your friend. Ask him why and tell him this will slow down his progress. And tell him that you can help him with his homework. But if he still won’t make a change, perhaps you should stop the friendship.
D.I feel your pain. If you can be proud of yourself and love yourself for your good qualities, other people can not hurt you. Be proud of your good points and hold your head up high. And I am sure you are beautiful too although you are overweight.
21.根据“I feel sad because my classmates make fun of me for being overweight. I worry a lot about how I look because people think the girl should be thin and pretty.”
22.根据“My English teacher asks me to collect homework for her every day, but my best friend never does homework and tells me not to tell the teacher.”
23.根据“I go to a boarding school (寄宿学校) and go home once a week, but I get homesick a lot. I feel down.”

【答案】30.B 31.A 32.C 33.D
根据“Competition isn’t just in sports. It’s also in business, science, and even when people look for love. Businessmen say that competition helps keep things fair (公平的) in the market. In science, scientists compete for improving people’s lives. Competition seems to be everywhere!”
根据“This is because people save energy for the prize, not because they care about the environment.”
根据“Students are more likely to take actions as long as the university maintains the prize.”
根据“Through cooperation, working together and sharing experience during competitions, people can understand the true meaning of competition and know about the long-term benefits. It’s time we start doing the right thing, for the right reasons.”

(Please give two reasons. )
34.Community projects, green spaces and lively streets. 35.Peaceful parks, streets with lots of trees and many cafes. 36.Because places like old farmers’ markets and stores remain. 37.I would like to live in Laureles. First, it provides a good balance between noise and peace, making it relaxing. Second, it’s a top choice for digital nomads, offering convenience for people who work online.
34.根据“considers factors (因素) like community projects (项目), green spaces and lively streets.” Community projects, green spaces and lively streets.
35.根据“Outside of La 70, you can find peaceful parks, streets with lots of trees and many cafes.” Peaceful parks, streets with lots of trees and many cafes.
36.根据“With all these changes, our neighbourhoods still feel like home because places like old farmers’ markets and stores stay.” Because places like old farmers’ markets and stores remain.
I would like to live in Laureles. First, it provides a good balance between noise and peace, making it relaxing. Second, it’s a top choice for digital nomads, offering convenience for people who work online.
