II. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Charity Cycling UK recently has launched a campaign to raise awareness of dooring after discovering that many people don’t know what it is. Dooring is when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user-typically cyclist _____1_____ looking for other road users.
Cycling UK chief executive Paul Tuohy told Gloucestershire Live: “Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, _____2_____ it’s not and can have serious consequences. Cycling UK wants to see great awareness _____3_____(make) about the dangers of opening your car door carelessly, and people encouraged to look before they open.”
The charity says 2,009 of the 3,000 injuries were sustained by cyclists, resulting in five fatalities but says this _____4_____ not be the full extent of the danger.
Cycling UK says not all car dooring incidents_____5_____(attend) by police, so the charity has written to transport minister Jesse Norman _____6_____(call) for a public awareness campaign urging all car occupants, not just drivers, to look before opening vehicle doors. One of the ways the charity suggests is the “Dutch reach”, _____7_____ people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door.
Cycling UK also suggests _____8_____(harsh) laws and advice on safer road positioning for people who cycle.
Mr. Tuohy said: “In the Netherlands they are known for practicing a method, known sometimes as the ‘Dutch reach’, _____9_____ we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK.”
“Cycling UK has written to the Department for Transport asking them to look into this, and highlight the dangers of ‘car dooring’ through a public awareness THINK style campaign.”
_____10_____ you’re really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what’s known as the “Dutch reach” to open the door. That will naturally turn you in your seat and give you a much better view of what’s coming up alongside in the car.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A. predictor B. achievable C. identify D. illusion E. simply F. standing G. match H. inevitably I. overcome J. desirable K. kill
One reader this month describes some serious hatred at a friend’s promotion: “I just can’t help feeling bitter about what they’ve achieved.” It is all too human to feel a little jealous of others’ success, but what can we do when those feelings threaten to _____11_____ us?
The obvious solution to envy would be to avoid comparing ourselves to the people around us, but that is easier said than done. Humans are social creatures whose _____12_____ within a group would have had serious consequences for our welfare. As a result, we _____13_____ use others as a measure of our own success — a habit that can quickly _____14_____ any satisfaction we might have obtained from our own achievements.
We can see this in people’s perceptions of their income. Research by Christopher Boyce at the University of Stirling, UK, and his colleagues has shown that the relative ranking of people’s earnings, compared with that of others within their social group, is a better _____15_____ of life satisfaction than total take-home pay. Social comparison can also influence perceptions of personal attributes like education or intelligence: it’s how we _____16_____ up to others that shapes how good we feel about ourselves, rather than our standalone performance.
Envy may be intensified by a “focusing _____17_____”, which describes our tendency to become focused on a single aspect of someone’s life. We imagine that our successful friend is living in a constant state of joy, and forget that they have to face everyday difficulties like an argument with their spouse or the death of a pet.
In one study, Ed O’Brien at the University of Chicago and his colleagues asked participants to imagine a peer with a(n) _____18_____ life. _____19_____ reminding them of the “small annoyances” this person regularly faced significantly reduced the participants’ envy.
When we are feeling envious, we might also reframe another’s success as proof that our own ambitions are _______20_______. To put yourself in this mindset, try remembering all the things within your control to improve your lot, and make a step-by-step plan of how you might achieve that.
We may never escape social comparison. When life gives us sour grapes, however, we can choose to make wine from those momentarily bitter fruits.
III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Keeping It in the Family
“You understand grandmother when she talks to you, don’t you, darling?” The girl nods. I met her, her Japanese mother and English father on a plane to Japan. The parents were eager to ____21____ their experience of bringing up their daughter bilingually in London. It isn’t easy: the husband does not speak Japanese, so the child hears the language only from her mother, who has come to ____22____ that the girl will reply in English. This can be painful. Not sharing your first language with loved ones is hard. Not passing it on to your own child can be especially tough. Many immigrant parents feel a sense of ____23____.
Children learn languages easily, but this doesn’t mean that ____24____ exposure is enough. They must hear a language quite a bit to understand it—and use it often to be able to speak it comfortably. This is mental work, and a child who doesn’t have an intention to speak a language will often avoid it. So languages often die when parents move abroad.
In the past, governments discouraged immigrant families from keeping their languages. These days, officials tend to be ____25____; some even see a valuable resource in immigrants’ language abilities. Yet many factors ensure that children still lose their parents’ languages, or never learn them. A big one is institutional ____26____. A child’s time spent with a second language is time not spent on their first. So teachers often discourage parents from speaking their languages to their children. Parents often ____27____ obey, worried about their children’s education. This is a(n) ____28____, for children really can master two languages or even more. Research does indeed suggest their vocabulary in each language may be somewhat smaller for a while, but other studies hint at intellectual advantages among bilinguals. They may be more skillful at complex tasks, better at maintaining attention.
Even without those side effects, ____29____, a bilingual child’s connection to another culture is a good thing in itself. How to ____30____? When both parents share the native language, the strategy is often to speak that at home, and the national language outside. But when they have ____31____ languages, perhaps the most common approach is “one parent, one language”. Francois Grosjean, a language expert from Switzerland, ____32____ the necessity. He recommends reserving occasions on which the only language that may be spoken is the one that needs ____33____. Sabine Little, a language expert at the University of Sheffield, puts the emphasis elsewhere. Making the native language yet another task ____34____ by parents can lead to rejection, she argues. She recommends letting the child form their own ____35____ connection to the language, for languages are not just another thing to be drilled into a young mind, but a matter of the heart.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I boarded a small plane together with my sister and 42 other passengers. While flying over the mountains, the plane encountered violent airflow. Losing control suddenly, it hit an unknown mountain peak. The impact of the crash claimed the lives of a few passengers immediately, leaving many injured including my sister.
Adding a slight chance of being found out, we waited in the open, as opposed to waiting in the plane, even though it was freezing cold. At night, we slept side by side to keep ourselves warm and melted snow into water. We knew our food couldn’t last us long, sticking to the hope that we would be rescued soon.
We knew from radio that the outside world was trying to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out via our radio that the rescue effort ended.
Now climbing out ourselves seemed our only chance. Although the crash site was terrible, I was reluctant to leave. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon if we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, Canessa and Vizintin, I decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. We were utterly unprepared for the challenge ahead. The mountain slopes were so steep they would daunt expert climbers. Our ignorance was our only chance.
We endured exhaustion and starvation and we had reached the top. To our horror, we found nothing. Disappointed, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a valley at the base of the mountain and again we started making our way down the mountain.
Eventually, at the bottom of the mountain we were helped by a local farmer who called the police for help. I then guided the rescue team via a helicopter to the crash site. Finally, after we had endured nineteen cruel days, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who had cheated death despite the odds.
36. Why did they stay outside the plane?
A. Because they didn’t want to stay with dead people inside.
B. Because it’s easier to obtain melted snow for water.
C. Because other passengers were against staying inside.
D. Because they hoped to be seen by the rescue people.
37. Why did the author leave the crash site despite his wish to stay?
A. Because he could get help from two experienced climbers.
B. Because his sister might die without timely medical help.
C. Because the crash site was too terrible for him to stay in.
D. Because he would like to be tested by the steep mountain slopes.
38. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The author gave up the climb halfway due to disappointment.
B. The public knew where the plane crashed from the radio.
C. Rescue people didn’t notice the aircraft because of its color at the beginning.
D. More than half of the plane passengers were finally rescued.
39. The underlined sentence had cheated death despite the odds is closest in meaning to ________.
A. had told lies about death in spite of reality
B. had avoided death in spite of huge difficulties
C. had treated death with positive attitude
D. had almost died in spite of strange expectation

Public Views on Artificial Intelligence
Source: Pew Research Center
Survey Date: March 2023
Methodology: Survey of U.S. Adults
With the explosive arrival of tools like ChatGPT, discussions about AI’s future, once restricted to tech circles and policymakers, have become mainstream. Yet amid this feverish pace of development, a crucial perspective is often missing: that of the public. That’s where the report released by the Pew Research Center comes in. By inserting that voice into the center of the conversation, the report serves to guide responsible innovation and regulation.
The Dominant Sentiment: Overwhelming Concern
The chart below clearly shows that concern is the dominant public reaction across various specific applications of AI, far surpassing feelings of excitement.
U.S. Adults’ Primary Feeling About AI Use in Specific Areas
Note: Blue bars represent the percentage who are “Concerned.” The red dots and line represent the percentage who are “Excited.”
Key Insights from the Data
Extreme Concern Over Privacy: The use of AI in facial recognition technology triggers the highest level of concern, with an overwhelming 90% of respondents expressing worry.
●Distrust in Critical Decisions: Applications that affect life opportunities and safety also generate high anxiety. Majorities are concerned about AI screening job applicants (77%) and the widespread use of self-driving cars (69%).
●Consistently Low Excitement: In all scenarios presented, the proportion of adults who feel excited about the AI application is strikingly low, never exceeding 10%. This underscores that cautious skepticism is the widespread public sentiment.
Beyond Expectations
While overall concern was high, a deeper look revealed a more surprising story: the worry is not uniform. The level of concern is strongly shaped by a person’s level of formal education, a factor that proved more predictive than age or gender in this context.
Concern About AI Use by Level of Education
Note: This chart shows the percentage of adults within each educational group who are “very” or “somewhat concerned” about AI in daily life.
The survey paints a complex picture: the American public is not just broadly cautious but also deeply divided. For developers and policymakers, this means a one-size-fits-all approach to communication and regulation will fail. Building public trust will require addressing ethical risks in critical areas like privacy and fairness, while also engaging diverse communities to understand their specific fears and vulnerabilities. The future of AI will depend as much on social acceptance as on technological advancement.
40. What is the primary purpose of the Pew Research Center’s report?
A. To showcase the latest advancements in AI technology.
B. To introduce the public to the debates happening among policymakers and tech circles.
C. To highlight the importance of including public opinion in AI’s development.
D. To compare the differences in AI development between the US and other countries.
41. Based on the data presented, which of the following statements is correct?
A. The level of public concern about AI is uniform across different groups.
B. The use of AI in facial recognition generates the lowest level of public concern.
C. Formal education is a less significant factor in shaping concern about AI than factors like age or gender.
D. The percentage of adults excited about any given AI application remains at or below 10%.
42. The authors would most likely agree that for AI to gain public trust, developers and policymakers must _________.
A. speed up the development of safer AI systems to quickly demonstrate their benefits
B. adopt tailored strategies that address ethical issues and understand specific concerns
C. direct resources primarily towards improving the accuracy and reliability of AI
D. assign the task of regulating AI to leading technology companies
(C)
Modified floating wood could seed the formation of new sea ice in the Arctic, helping counteract the rapid decline of ice coverage due to global warming.
The area of the Arctic Ocean covered by ice is shrinking as the climate warms, and it has been projected that the region will see its first ice-free summer day before 2030. The loss of ice leads to a vicious cycle: because the exposed water is darker than ice, it absorbs more of the sun’s heat, warming the water further and making it increasingly hard for ice to reform. This has led people to suggest various geoengineering plans to refreeze the water both in the Arctic and Antarctica.
Now, Tian Li at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and her colleagues are proposing modifying wood to help it seed the formation of new ice.
“We choose wood because it’s a natural material,” says Li. “You see a lot of floating wood in ocean water and it raises much less of an environmental concern than things made of artificial materials.”
To create the modified material, which they call ice-wood, the researchers took a 10-centimetre-square, 1.5-centimetre-thick piece of American basswood (Tilia americana) and cut a small chunk out of the middle. This chunk was placed on a hotplate so that one side carbonized, while the larger piece was treated with hydrogen peroxide (过氧化氢)and heat, removing much of a polymer (聚合物)called lignin. The two pieces were then put back together.
Lignin gives wood its colour, so removing it makes that part of the wood whiter and better at reflecting light. The idea is that when the ice-wood floats in the sea, water is drawn up through natural microchannels. Sunlight then warms the dark, carbonized part of the surface, making the water there evaporate, after which it recondenses on the colder, whiter part of the surface.
During tests in ponds with water kept at about 2℃ (36℉), the top of a piece of floating ice-wood stayed below freezing, even when the air temperature reached between 7℃ and 8℃ (44.6℉and 46.4℉).
Though covering the whole Arctic isn’t realistic, Li suggests that larger pieces of ice-wood could be used around coastal regions, where Indigenous people rely on ice to hunt fish, to speed up the ice coverage in winter and reduce ice loss in summer.
But a big question remains about whether our focus should be on geoengineering approaches to prevent ice loss or on slowing the climate change that is causing it.
“I find it strange to put so much energy into these ideas when we already know what is needed: reduced carbon dioxide emissions,” says Julienne Stroeve at University College London.
43. What is the main purpose of the “ice-wood” project?
A. To clean the ocean water in the Arctic.
B. To provide a new building material for coastal regions.
C. To help new sea ice form in the Arctic.
D. To study the behavior of seabirds in cold environments.
44. Which of the following situations best illustrates a similar “vicious cycle” as mentioned in the 2nd paragraph?
A. A forest fire destroys trees→sunlight reaches the forest floor→new seedlings grow→the forest begins to recover.
B. A student sleeps less to study more→poor sleep leads to lower concentration→needs more time to study the same material→sleeps even less.
C. A farmer uses a new fertilizer→crop yield increases→the farmer earns more money→the farmer buys more land.
D. A person gets a high-paying job→saves more money→makes various investments→poor investments lead to debt.
45. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The wood relies on creating a temperature difference to promote ice formation.
B. Lignin is removed so as to make the wood darker and better at absorbing heat.
C. The carbonized part directly freezes the surrounding seawater through rapid cooling.

We Need to Do More to Help the Teachers
Teaching should not be one of the most stressful jobs in the US. But it is. “The only other profession that comes close to us for stress is nursing and we still have the numbers … by a lot. ____47____”
“Nobody realizes how horrific working conditions are for teachers throughout the country,” Brice-Hyde says, an experienced teacher in New York who is part of the national group Badass Teachers Association (BAT).
____48____ So they did a national study of teacher working conditions around issues like stress, work-life balance, respect, and more. The results are both surprising and not. If you’ve been seeing the stories about teacher walkouts and pay inequality, you probably aren’t all that shocked to see these things like: 61 percent of educators find work “always” or “often” stressful; 27 percent of educators said they’ve been threatened or bullied; 86 percent of educators feel disrespected by US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
Teachers are stressed out, and turnover is high. No wonder we’re seeing more stories about the importance of self-care, classroom burnout, and mental health days for teachers. Yet, self-care doesn’t seem to come easily for people, and this is definitely true for teachers. ____49____
We think it’s time to change that, though. So in honor of World Mental Health Day, we are working to change the dialogue about teacher mental health. Below are some of the top challenges people give for not seeking therapy, or even basic self-care, along with possible solutions and workarounds for each one.
We hope you share this article widely, giving support and love to your fellow educators. ____50____ And it’s pretty much guaranteed to help you do what you set out to in the first place-be a good teacher.
A. BAT wanted to take action.
B. Those who gave more tended to gain less.
C. The data are ridiculous, and no one is really paying attention.
D. By nature, educators are taught to give care and support others, not themselves.
E. Although respected for its own sake, teaching is under suspicion in today’s world.
F. After all self-care, good mental health positive well-being is one of the single best things you can do for yourself.
IV. Summary Writing
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Ice Cream Innovation
Is there anything nicer than a cooling ice cream on a hot summer’s day? This traditional treat is centuries old, but our tastes and consumer habits are evolving. How is the ice cream production process changing, and who is driving this change?
Making ice cream is a time-consuming process. While the recipe is simple, getting the balance right between ice, fat and air is important if the ice cream is to have the right texture. To achieve this, the ingredients need to be mixed and heated, then cooled and frozen-a process that takes time and uses a lot of energy. Designers and engineers are working to improve the production process with new specialized equipment to make it increasingly automated. For now, however, even with the help of robots and 3D printers, it can take up to two years from testing a new frozen dessert product to it being available to consumers.
And demand is only going up. According to statistics, more than 25 billion litres of ice cream were eaten worldwide in 2021. While the US and China are the biggest consumers, data shows that people in the UK bought 28%more ice cream during the UK’s record-breaking summer compared to a year earlier. Clearly, rising temperatures can explain why some people are buying more ice cream, but it’s not the only explanation. The pandemic has seen people reaching for pleasures they can enjoy at home, which include eating indulgent(纵容的) foods.
So, what new things can we expect? Dairy still dominates, but plant-based ice cream and low-calorie choices are a growing part of the frozen dessert market. But, according to Elsebeth Baungaard, the next global trend will be less about innovation and more about portion size “I’m sorry to say it’s simply shrinking”, she says. “But the quality will be higher.”

IV. Guided Writing
【56题答案】
【答案】Dear Students' Union,
I'm writing to contribute some ideas regarding the "Green Campus" campaign.
I've noticed that there are areas where our school could be more environmentally friendly. One issue is the excessive use of disposable items in the cafeteria. Students often use disposable chopsticks and plastic lunch boxes, which cause a large amount of waste. Another problem is the lack of proper waste-sorting facilities in classrooms. Garbage is usually thrown together without any classification.
To address these problems, I suggest that the school encourage the use of reusable tableware in the cafeteria. Regarding waste-sorting, we can place different waste bins in each classroom with clear labels indicating what kind of waste should be put in. Additionally, we can organize waste-sorting training sessions for students to raise their awareness.
I hope my suggestions can be of some help to the “Green Campus” campaign.
Best regards,
Li Hua
