What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?
This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion (蒲公英) standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting
those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.
I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream - colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood, I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad’s face as he unwrapped those black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame (框架), I knew I had given the perfect gift.

A. the father B. the author C. Edgar Allan Poe D. William Blake
58. The author made the gift by ______
A. searching for the poems online B. drawing the background by hand
C. painting the letters in three colors D. matching the words with pictures
59. Why did the author know that she had given the perfect gift to her father?
A. Because it was more expensive.
B. Because it was a surprise to her father.
C. Because it was a homemade gift.
D. Because it was treasured by her father.
60. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To show how to design images for gifts.
B. To suggest making gifts from one’s heart.
C. To explain how computers help create gifts. D. To describe the gifts the author has received.C
Some people think asking for help is a sign of weakness, but the complete opposite is true. It takes strength to ask for help. It's a hard thing to do. The truth is, there are more good people than bad. People truly want to help others. No one should ever have to be in that dark place.
I have a friend called Diane. Diane is one of the most positive people I have ever known. She is smart and funny, and by looking at her you would certainly think she had a perfect life. No one knew the terrible things she was dealing with. She never asked anyone for help when she was in great trouble. She thought that she would just be bothering people if she told them the truth. She thought loneliness was her answer. She masked her loneliness, but one day she hit her breaking point.
Diane tried to take her life one morning. She was lucky, though. Someone found her before it was too late. People finally knew her problems and with their help she got rid of them. She once told me that her biggest regret was not reaching out to someone sooner. Diane has greatly changed. She's become positive and is always ready to help others.
Diane and I have grown quite close. She has helped me battle my own problems. She is an example of what help looks like.
To anyone out there who feels they are alone, I hope you know you are not. Even if you feel the world is closing in on you, there are people who care—people who will surprise you in the best ways. The best thing about our technological world is how easily you can reach people. Don't be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone.
61. What does the author mean by saying "the complete opposite is true" in Paragraph 1?
A. Getting help from others is a great shame.
B. Asking for help shows great courage.
C. It takes bravery to offer help.
D. It is difficult to get help.
62. Why did Diane refuse to ask for help at first?
A. She was very positive.
B. She had no one to turn to.
C. She considered help useless.
D. She feared to make trouble for others.
63. What change did Diane show after being saved by people?
A. She turned her back on the author.
B. She masked her anger with a smile.
C. She thought highly of reaching out to others. D. She has removed all her doubts about others.
64. What does the author think of our technological world today?
A. It makes people afraid of face - to - face conversation.
B. It makes communication between people easier.
C. It offers a variety of ways to care for others.
D. It is likely to make people feel lonely.
65. What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To share a friend's story.
B. To explain why people refuse to get help.
C. To encourage us to ask for help if necessary.
D. To show the harm of keeping problems ourselves.
D
The habit - forming process within our brains is a three - step loop (回路). First there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Then there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future. Over time, this loop - cue, routine, reward - becomes more and more automatic. The cue and reward become intertwined (交织) until a powerful sense of anticipation and a desire appears. Eventually, a habit is born.
Habits aren't destiny. Habits can be ignored, changed, or replaced. But the reason why the discovery of the habit loop is so important is that it reveals a basic truth: When a habit appears, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. It stops working so hard; or shifts focus to other tasks. So unless you deliberately fight a habit - unless you find new routines - the pattern will unfold automatically.
Habits never really disappear. They're encoded (嵌入) into the structures of our brain, and that's a huge advantage for us, because it would be awful if we had to relearn how to drive after every vacation. The problem is that your brain can't tell the difference between bad and good habits; and so if you have a bad one, it's always lurking (隐藏) there, waiting for the right cues and rewards.
This explains why it's so hard to create exercise habits, for instance, or change what we eat. Once we develop a routine of sitting on the sofa, rather than running, or snacking whenever we pass a doughnut box, those patterns always remain inside our heads. By the same rule, though, if we learn to create new neurological (神经系统的) routines that overpower those behaviors-if we take control of the habit loop-we can force those bad tendencies into the background. And once someone creates a new pattern, studies have demonstrated, going for a jog or ignoring the doughnuts becomes as automatic as any other habit.
Of course, those decisions arc habitual, effortless. As long as your basal ganglia (基底核) is complete and the cues remain constant, the behaviors will occur unthinkingly. At the same time, however, the brain's dependence on automatic routines can be dangerous. Habits are often as much a curse as a benefit.
66. What can we learn about the habit loop from the first two paragraphs?
A. It helps your brain understand what is worth remembering.
B. It is a three step loop consisting of a cue, a routine and a reward.
C. It becomes automatic and develops a sense of anticipation and desire.
D. It reveals a basic truth that the pattern of a habit will unfold automatically.
67. The advantage of habits never really disappearing is that ______.
A. we can easily change what we eat.
B. we develop a routine of sitting on the sofa.
C. we don't necessarily learn a skill again.
D. we can distinguish between bad and good habits.
68. What can be inferred from the last sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. Habits can be changed and replaced.
B. Habits cannot be ignored or created.
C. Old patterns always exist in our brain.
D. New patterns seldom remain in our heads.
69. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The discovery of the habit loop. B. The automatic pattern of habits.
C. The research on the habit - forming process. D. The brain's dependence on automatic routines.
70. How is the passage developed?
A. By analyzing principles and giving examples. B. By making contrast between different habits.
C. By presenting cause and effect. D. By following the order of time.
第四部分: 写作(共两节,满分 35 分)
第一节: 阅读表达(共 5 小题; 每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
I had been working for a company in Australia for more than ten years. I had just found a better job and I knew that the manager would be disappointed when I was leaving. I recently became friends with a young man who had just migrated to Australia to escape war in his homeland. He was unskilled and was finding life difficult as he was unemployed.
The manager asked me to introduce someone who I thought could do the job just as well as me, so I took this opportunity to arrange an interview for my new friend. However, in the end, he was not offered the job after the interview.
Later, I asked the manager why my friend was turned down. The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend will be a good choice for the company since I could train him. I believed that once given the time to learn, he could do the job. After a week's training, he was employed and was happy with his position.
I knew how the terrible war had forced him to leave his homeland and what price he had paid for doing so. I appreciate being able to live in Australia and believe that this appreciation is best proved by offering acts of kindness to people in need of help. The smile of appreciation from this man continues to impel me to give, which is a very happy and enjoyable process, during which I also receive some unexpected things, such as help, prize, flowers, love and so on.
