Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of
preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and
made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms.Yates started to speak:

The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of
the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has
become something of nostalgic )skill. However, while today's educators are using more and
more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for
students to be successful---both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says
it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete
various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009,found that
when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences
and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study,Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills
and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write."Spelling makes some of
the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and
concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas."Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe()
"those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,"the study said.Seeing
the words in the "mind's eye"helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger,
but also to spot()spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct then over
time.
"In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have
spell checks,"she said."But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level,
they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the
computer.”

Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space
missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should
stop wasting time and money exploring space.Instead,we should feed the world's poor and find
immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases ()However,
others feel this is a shallow view which fails to realize how exploring space helps us.
Firstly;exploring space has already made a difterence in the fight against world hunger. It has
directly resulted in the many satellites that now orbit Earth.A number of the satellites record data on
land and weather patterns. Then the data is transmitted (to scientists on Earth. After careful
analysis, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers. As a result,
space-based science has helped farming in its efforts to grow enough food to feed Earth's increasing
population.
Secondly, space exploration has already promoted technological improvements that benefit us all.
High-end products around the world are made to a higher standard now because of advanced
technology which was first created to meet the requirements for space exploration. For example,
space technologies have helped the research and development of different types of new material
They have also helped companies make better heart monitors and other machines that doctors
regularly use.Today, space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries, and everyday
products such as GPS,memory foam pillows(记t忆棉枕头),and smartphone cameras are changing
our lives.
Finally, sending astronauts into space has helped people to think about the world's problems and
even to find ways to solve them.Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea made
people realise that our planet's resources are limited. In order to provide for such a rapidly increasing
population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home. The
greatest attention at present is on Mars because it is closer to Earth. In the future, humans may live
on both planets.
In closing, exploring space provides the world with many different benefits. Therefore,it should
continue so as to provide new and better solutions to people's short-term and long-term problems.

A.propose a definition
B.make a comparison

67.Which of the following is TRUE about the satellites?
A.They can provide useful recommendations for farmers.
B.They can collect information of the land and weather changes.
C.They can fight against world hunger directly.
D.They can analyze the data and make suggestions.
68.What idea does the author convey mn Paragraph 3?
A.Our daily life has benefited from the development of space technology.
B.High-end products cannot meet the needs of space exploration.
C.Space exploration no longer requires high-end products.
D.The development of new material is a must for space exploration.
69.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 4?
A.Space exploration has changed the way our planet works
B.Space exploration helps to discover and solve Earth's problems.
C.In the future, all humans may have to move to Mars.
D.Resource shortage and population growth are already serious problems.
70.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To provide guidance on how to carry out space exploration.
B.To suggest a way of meeting the requirements for space exploration.
C.To stress the need of promoting technology
D.To state the importance of exploring space.
第Ⅱ卷
第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
Some fourteen years ago,I read Diet for a New America by John Robbins. At that time I wanted
to change the world by means of stopping animals from being eaten by people.
Diet for a New America paints a beautiful picture of the animal world,in which one is rich not
only in intelligence and beauty but even in compassion )It tells stories, for example,of
dolphins saving sea mammals from predatory whales and saving humans from shipwreck. It
appealed to my sense of compassion, one of the values I had always cherished deeply in my heart,no
matter how stupidly or wisely I had tried to put it into practice.Having eaptured my compassion, the
book naturally led me to see human authority over animals as abusive and unjust.Diet for a New
America also convinced me that consuming animal products is ecologically irresponsible and the
major cause of human disease.
So I decided to make a change.I bought a tofu cookbook, and purged every form of animal flesh
from my diet.Six months later,I went from vegetarian to vegan and rid even eggs and dairy products
from my diet. This diet was qualified as vegan in most respects, although I didn't add some of the
more extreme elements,like avoiding honey.
However,as time went by,my health became bad due to the diet without animal products. My
parents were worried and took me to a doctor. The doctor suggested I change my diet. Finally,I gave
up being a vegan.I included high-quality,nutrient-dense animal foods into my diet again. And I
finally recovered.
Being a vegan isn't suitable for everyone and I'm a good example of it.I should find other
proper ways to protect animals and make their life easier.
71.What did the author want to do after reading Diet for a New America?(no more than 10 words)
72.Why did the author decide to make a change after reading Diet for a New America?(no more
than 20 words)
73.What does the underlined word "purged"in Paragraph 3 probably mean?(1 word)
74.What happened to the author after becoming a vegan?(no more than 5 words)
75.Try to figure out another proper way to protect animals and make their life easier and explain.(no
more than 25 words)
