I grew up in the Philippines. When I was fifteen years old, I moved to Chicago with my family. When I was in the Philippines, I attended a small all-girl private school. While in Chicago I went to a public senior high school. It was a big change for me. The school was new, everyone was different, and people there were also diverse. I had never met so many kinds of people in just one place. I was scared during the first day of school. I didn’t know anyone. I got lost since the school was huge. I really didn’t know what to do. I just wanted to cry. Luckily, a girl of my age came to me.
“Are you in trouble?” she asked me smilingly.
At first I was too shy to say anything. But she looked very kind. “I’m lost. I can’t find my classroom,” I said.
“Don’t worry. Let me help you, ” said the girl.
So I told the girl where I was going. Luckily she just knew that place and she took me there.
On the way, the girl said she was a new student too and asked about me. When she knew I just came to the city, she said I could turn to her whenever I needed help. I was really thankful hearing that.
Before the girl left, she said with a smile, “I’m sure you’ll make some new friends here soon.” What she said gave me great courage and confidence.
In the following weeks, I made a lot of new friends and met so many people. My friends took me out to movies, road trips and concerts in our free time.
I must thank the girl I met on my first day in that school. She made me believe people there were nice.
24. What does the underlined word “diverse” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Different. B. Confident. C. Serious. D. Bad.
25. Why did the girl come to the author?

27. What do we know about the author in the following weeks?
A. She failed to make new friends. B. She missed her parents very much.
C. She had difficulty doing her schoolwork. D. She really enjoyed her life.

TikTok has reported it will block young users on the social networking platform from using certain beauty filters (滤镜) on photographs.
The filters allow users to edit photos and do things like making people’s skin look clearer, their eyes a little bigger or their lips a little fuller. Some filters also allow users to change their skin colour, and it can be hard to see when a photograph has been edited in this way.
People under the age of 18 will be blocked from using these filters. Some of them are created by users and others are made by the app. TikTok posted the changes after a report by Internet matters a children’s online safety organisation. The organisation found that these beauty filters could be harmful to children’s mental health because they put young people under pressure to look a certain way. This can harm children’s self-esteem (自尊) and cause worry, experts say.
Christine Grahm from TikTok said on LinkedIn, “If our users don’t feel safe, they won’t bring their true selves to TikTok and the platform just wouldn’t be the same.” One TikTok user told The Guardian in 2022 that she had considered getting cosmetic surgery (美容手术) after a period of using beauty filters on the app.
Fun filters that allow children to add dog noses or rabbit ears to images will still be OK to use. One problem with the ban (禁令) is that not all users enter their real ages when signing up to TikTok. The company said it would soon be trying out new machine learning systems that could help find out when users had entered the incorrect age, but it is under pressure to stop under 13s from using the platform by giving untrue dates of birth.
Children’s safety organisations want all social media sites to do more to make the platforms safe spaces for young people.
28. What will TikTok do about certain beauty filters for young users?
A. Test their safety. B. Post their advantages.
C. Ban the use of them. D. Increase their users.
29. What is the influence of the beauty filters?
A. It encourages creativity. B. It makes children worried.
C. It develops self-esteem. D. It stops children from communicating.
30. Why is Christine Grahm mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the harm of beauty filters. B. To make readers more interested.
C. To warn children to stay away from Internet. D. To introduce cosmetic surgery.
31. What problem does TikTok have with the ban?
A. Users might not like it. B. It’s hard to check how old users are.
C. Users might misunderstand the rule. D. It doesn’t receive support from parents.
D
Researchers in Australia, who studied 1,500 people and their lifestyles, have found that having good friends can help you live longer. An American study of 10,000 students, over a period of 35 years, also found that if you make more friends than the average (普通的) person at school, you'll receive a higher salary (工资) in later life. People need good social skills at work to manage people and work in a team successfully. These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.
On average, teenagers aged between 15 and 17 have 500 “friends” on their favourite social networking site. Adults have 130. So if you believe this research, you might live for a long time and be very rich.
However, according to Professor Robin Dunbar from the University of Oxford, it probably won't make any difference. Dunbar studied the number of messages between users of a popular social networking website, each of whom had between 200 and 2,000 friends. He found that they always communicate with a maximum (最大量) of 150 people.
Among these 150, Dunbar believes that around five people are close friends. You've most likely known them for a long time; they are probably old friends and you share all your good and bad experiences with them. Then there are ten more friends. Although they’re close to you, you may not keep in touch with them every week. Next there are 35 people who you might spend time with because of a shared interest. You aren't close. And finally, there's a large group of 100. You see or speak to these people at least once a year, but you don't know them well. Beyond this number, Dunbar says, it's impossible to make any relationship meaningful.
If you have a lot of online “friends”, try this experiment: First take away anyone you haven't been in touch with for a year. Then remove people you can't remember and, finally, take away friends who you wouldn't mind losing touch with. How many do you have left? How many of these people are actually good friends? According to the research, these are the only people that really matter.
32. What are the studies in the first paragraph mainly about?
A Some useful advice on how to make friends. B. Some social skills you may need at work.
C. The advantages of having a lot of friends. D. The number of friends you should have.
33. What is Robin Dunbar's attitude towards the studies?
A. Disagreeable. B. Unclear. C. Hopeful. D. Careless.
34. What does the text mainly want to show?
A. It's more important to have good friends than lots of friends.
B. Friends are sometimes more important than family.
C. There is a lot of research on the influence of friends.
D. You need to spend more time with your friends.
35. In which part of a newspaper can we read the text?
A. Nature. B. Technology. C. Lifestyle. D. Education.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There’s a reason why so many people love running early in the morning. ____36____ Not only do you begin your day more relaxed and refreshed, but you’ve also started things off with an achievement. If you think you’re ready to take advantage of the benefits of a morning run, here are four suggestions from the professionals.
●Find a friend, and be gentle with yourself
Finding a partner to run with will give you someone to be responsible for, and make it much harder to miss the run. It’s also important to remember that this is a process, and you can’t expect to do it perfectly from the beginning. ____37____ “Once you get into the habit, it becomes natural and actually starts your day,” says Sheri Piers, top American female finisher at the 2012Boston Marathon.
●Welcome the movement
“The first few steps or blocks will be tough in the morning. They always are,” says Dr. Jordan Metzl, who has finished over 32 marathons. With a practice of more than 20, 000patients, Metzl’s days are quite packed, so early morning runs are a must. ____38____ “Sometimes you have to just do it, and remember that the inspiration will come later,” he says.
●Stay warm
____39____ “If I go to bed in my sports wear, all I need to do is throw on the outer layers and head out the door,” says Tina Muir, a half-marathoner. She also leaves her alarm on the other side of the room to help push herself up.
● ____40____
“I view waking up early as tearing off a Band-Aid (创可贴),” says Michele Gonzalez, a running coach. “It’s gonna hurt for a bit.” Her advice is relatively simple. “You just have to set the alarm early and start doing it,” she says. “After a few days, you’ll be tired earlier at night and will start going to bed earlier. This makes the early alarm feel a bit more manageable.”
A. It has major benefits.
B. Accept and manage the pain.
C. Have a training plan at the beginning.
D. Even if you have a failure or two, keep at it.
E. It’s just like warming up your car in the winter.
F. Still, he knows how hard it can be to get inspired.
G. The worst part is getting changed in the cold air, especially in winter.

“I thought we were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me go over for the physics exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy.” Emily thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Black asked all the students into the exam room.
Emily couldn’t answer some physics questions. Suddenly she saw Ann sitting two rows in front of her. Emily couldn’t believe it! Ann was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Ann always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Ann, and thought about telling the teacher, but… “Stop writing,” said Mr. Black and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Emily hadn’t answered two of the questions, She was going to fail again!
Emily wanted to talk to Ann at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Emily went to the library to prepare for the history exam, which was her favourite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Ann was getting good grades by cheating (作弊) all that time.” She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. My favourite festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival. It usually falls in September or October. On that day, our family members usually get together and have a nice meal. After that, I always admire the moon and share mooncakes with my families. I love this festival because I like eating mooncakes. In the shape of a full moon, they carry our wishes to the families we love and miss.

She was working on the last question when she saw Ann take out her phone. Emily nodded to Mr. Black. Mr. Black went to Ann quietly and picked up Ann’s phone. All was clear, and Mr. Black asked her to leave the classroom. Ann walked out crying. Everyone was staring at her. Emily didn’t feel very happy. She thought Ann might hate her for this. But considering what Ann had done before, she felt she had done the right thing.
After school, Emily found Ann waiting for her at the school gate. “Emily, please wait,” Ann said. “I’m sorry I haven’t answered any of your calls, but my dad’s been ill for two weeks and had a heart operation today. During exams I was reading texts from my mum to see how it was going. I have explained to Mr. Black and he asked me to take the exam again. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening.” Emily couldn’t help crying, either. “You should have told me this earlier. Let me know if you have difficulties. We are true friends.”
